Abstract. People routinely call the person they depend on a rock, describe a marriage as built on foundations, and say a friendship has cracked. This series treats that vocabulary as data rather than decoration: an unbroken, cross-culturally recurring habit of describing the least stable thing a life contains, another person, in the vocabulary of the most stable things a life contains, stone, ground, structure. The series builds, article by article, the apparatus needed to explain why this habit exists and why it could not have been otherwise. It distinguishes recursivity from stability, maps five mediations through which recursive life is actually lived, traces how two of those mediations convert fleeting coordination into durable anchors, and follows the resulting architecture outward into comparative medicine and myth, into the vocabulary of thing-theory, into an ordinary house, and into the history of writing. This introduction states the shared apparatus once, previews what each article contributes, and explains where the argument is heading: toward the sentence that gives the series its name.
I. The Sentence the Whole Series Exists to Explain
Somewhere in most languages there is a version of the same claim, offered without embarrassment and without any sense that it needs justifying: you are my rock. English speakers say it of a spouse, a parent, a friend who did not waver during a crisis. The metaphor is not idle. It sits inside a much larger family of expressions, a relationship has foundations, a marriage is on the rocks, a friendship has cracked, someone is a pillar of the community, that treats the bond between two people as though it were a physical structure with a physical structure's properties: load-bearing capacity, fracture points, the difference between subsidence and collapse. No one teaches this vocabulary as a deliberate poetic device. Children arrive at it unprompted, reach for it in grief and in gratitude, and are understood immediately by everyone who hears it.
The obvious explanations are also the least satisfying ones. It is not enough to say the comparison is apt because both rocks and reliable people are, in some loose sense, dependable, since that begs the question of why dependability recruits exactly this image rather than any of the other durable things a language has available to it, an anchor, a keel, a spine, and why the recruitment is so consistent across traditions that never influenced one another. It is not enough to call it a dead metaphor, worn smooth by overuse into simple vocabulary, since dead metaphors are supposed to have lost their explanatory force, and this one has not: everyone who uses it still means, and still hears, an actual claim about stability under load. Something more specific is being tracked, and the purpose of this series is to say what.
II. The Apparatus, Stated Once
Four distinctions do the work that the rest of the series depends on, and each has to be kept separate from the others because ordinary language runs them together.
Recursivity is categorical. A counterpart is recursive when how it proceeds is affected by how it is engaged with, and nonrecursive when nothing about the engagement alters its course. A stone does not respond to being leaned on. A person does, in the further and more demanding sense that their response is itself already a response to being leaned on. This distinction admits no degrees. A counterpart either answers back or it does not.
Stability concerns the rate of a counterpart's own variation, and it cuts across the recursive category rather than tracking it. A bone is recursive and highly stable, changing over years rather than hours. A heartbeat is equally recursive and highly volatile, changing within a second. A mountain is nonrecursive and highly stable. A storm is equally nonrecursive and highly volatile. Confusing stability with recursivity, treating stable things as though they were simply unresponsive and volatile things as though they were simply alive, is the single most common error this apparatus exists to correct.
Predictability names whether an observer can anticipate a counterpart's future state, and it separates from stability in both directions: a fault line can rupture without warning after centuries of apparent stillness, while a heartbeat under exertion remains almost perfectly anticipatable throughout its variation.
Controllability, the variable that only a species capable of manufacturing its own anchors introduces, names the extent to which a counterpart's future state can be deliberately shaped rather than merely observed. A mountain is stable and predictable and entirely beyond reach. A wall is stable and predictable because someone built it that way.
A fifth term, sedimentability, becomes indispensable once the argument turns to what human beings specifically do with this apparatus: how long a formed state can persist beyond the particular activity that produced it. A shout dies the instant it stops being made. An inscription persists for as long as the stone that carries it survives. The series is, in one sentence, an account of how living beings that are mostly recursive keep producing, discovering, and depending on things that are not.
III. Five Mediations, Not One World
Recursive life is not lived through a single channel, and the series names five, three of them available to any organism and two of them, so far as the evidence currently shows, distinctively human.
Embodiment is the register of a living body coordinating with its own ongoing state, selfrecursive across bands running from the nearly fixed, a skeleton altering over years, to the nearly instantaneous, a heartbeat altering within a second. Being-with is the register of one living being coordinating with another who is coordinating back, interrecursive and, of the three zoetic mediations, the most open to revision without warning. Dwelling is the register of place, season, and terrain, categorically nonrecursive, supplying the original external stability any organism has ever had access to, uneven, unowned, and, before poiesis, entirely uncontrollable.
Multimateriality and multisymbolization are different in kind. They are poietic rather than zoetic, and they exist specifically to deposit recursive coordination into durable, nonrecursive form: a path that preserves repeated movement in altered ground, a name that preserves identification across a lifetime of bodily change, a law that preserves a settled dispute for people who were not present when it was settled. The two poietic mediations only ever operate coupled, since no symbol persists without a material carrier and no durable material arrangement organizes coordination without a symbolic distinction attached to it. Their coupled operation is what the series calls sedimentation, and civilisation, on the account this series develops, is nothing more mysterious than the cumulative, intergenerational accumulation of exactly this kind of deposit.
IV. What the Series Has Established So Far
Five articles carry this apparatus into five different territories, and each is written to stand on its own while adding a load-bearing piece to the whole.
"Bones Rock" opens with the ethnographic puzzle that gives the series its title: the extraordinary, independently rediscovered consistency with which unrelated healing and mythic traditions map bone onto stone, blood onto water, flesh onto earth, breath onto wind. Symbolic, analogical, projective, and constructivist accounts of this correspondence all fail for the same reason, none of them explains why the pairings sort themselves so consistently rather than scattering across every possible combination. The article's answer is that embodiment and dwelling share a single stability topology, a structure ranging from a nearly fixed foundation to a rapidly changing surface, and that traditions attending closely to either domain rediscover the other domain wearing the same shape. The correspondence is not metaphor. It is ontology, correctly perceived.
"The Ground We Made, the Ground We Found" turns from the topology life has always found to the ground a single lineage learned to manufacture. It distinguishes recursivity, stability, predictability, and controllability formally, maps the stability profile of all five mediations, and defines civilisation as the cumulative sedimentation of recursive coordination into multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors, tools, paths, writing, laws, archives, that restructure the conditions of all future life, human and otherwise. It also states plainly what the earlier article leaves implicit, that anchors are ambivalent: every made anchor deposits a selective history rather than a neutral one, and the same durability that lets a rule outlast its makers lets it outlast its usefulness as well.
"Things Carry Us Because They Don't Talk Back" takes the apparatus out of the series' own vocabulary and into a live theoretical dispute, arguing that Actor-Network Theory's most celebrated move, attributing agency to nonhumans because they make a difference to outcomes, gets its own best evidence backwards. Scallops, speed bumps, immutable mobiles, and black boxes carry the coordinative weight ANT documents them carrying precisely because they do not respond to how they are engaged with, not despite it. The article re-reads Callon, Serres, Latour, and Mol through the same three-type distinction developed earlier in the series and shows that it explains ANT's own richest material more precisely than ANT explains it itself.
"A Very Pretty Home" descends from theory into a single old house, walked room by room, to show the apparatus operating at the scale of an ordinary morning. Its argument is that time itself, not just deliberate construction, performs the conversion of recursive into nonrecursive: every conversation, once it ends, becomes a closed fact that can no longer be renegotiated, and a house that has stood long enough is simply the visible face of an enormous accumulation of past success, most of it performed by people no longer present to be thanked for it. The article closes on a redefinition of civilisation as intergenerational custodianship rather than possession, a household repaired for people the repairer will never meet.
"The Writing's on the Wall Because the Wall Holds Still" takes up the most consequential single case of multisymbolic sedimentation, notation, and asks not how humans became capable of it, since marked and ornamented objects predate writing by tens of thousands of years, but why durable notation became worth its considerable cost only when it did. It sets out four conditions any arrangement must satisfy to keep a distinction actionable across absence, a carrier, a recoverable invariance, a route back to the deposit, and an institution that reproduces competent readers, and uses the comparative history of writing, from Uruk to the Andean khipu, to show that societies have repeatedly adopted, declined, and abandoned durable notation as a cost comparison against maintained interpreters rather than as a stage of development.
V. The Throughline
Read together rather than separately, these five articles converge on a single claim that no one of them states quite so bluntly on its own. Dwelling supplied the original stability available to any form of life, and it was never enough on its own terms: uneven, indifferent to any organism's purposes, and beyond any organism's control. Human beings answered this insufficiency not by adapting more cleverly to a given world but by manufacturing new ground, converting the costly, effortful, ceaselessly renegotiated coordination of embodiment and being-with into cheap, repeatable, nonrecursive deposits that anyone, including people who took no part in producing them, could subsequently rely on without having to relive the labour that produced them. This is what a road does, what a law does, what a name, a calendar, a diagnosis, and a repaired roof do. None of it removes recursion from the world. It relocates recursion, redistributing where the effortful, answerable, revisable work of coordination has to occur and who ends up bearing its cost.
VI. Where the Argument Is Going
Each article that closes this bundle points forward rather than settling into a final word, and the direction they point is consistent. Once a population inhabits a world dense with walls, roads, bonds, and archives, these made anchors become available for a further purpose beyond the practical coordination they were built to serve: they become the vocabulary through which language attempts to describe the least stable, most deeply recursive dimension of life there is, a person's relations with other people. That is the question the series is moving toward, why human beings, trying to speak about love, trust, recognition, belonging, and betrayal, so often find themselves saying, in one form of words or another, that people are rocks, that relationships have foundations, that a shared life is a road two people build together. The apparatus assembled across these five articles, recursivity, stability, the five mediations, and sedimentation, is what will make that answer more than another metaphor noticed and elaborated for effect.
VII. How to Read What Follows
The articles gathered here can be read in any order without becoming unintelligible, since each restates what it needs from the others as it goes, but reading them in sequence shows the apparatus being built rather than merely applied, and is the arrangement this introduction recommends. What holds the series together is not a single conclusion but a single method: take an area where correspondence, durability, or stability has been described and never quite explained, medicine's correspondence between body and landscape, technology's apparent agency, a house's capacity to disappear into the background of a life, writing's uneven adoption across history, and show that the same small set of distinctions accounts for it more precisely than the vocabulary the field brought to it already did. The series is called You Are My Rock because that is where the method is eventually meant to arrive, at an explanation, rather than an ornament, for the most ordinary and least examined thing people say to one another.
Part I. Bones Rock: Why Humans Can’t Help Seeing Bodies as Dwelling
Abstract
Across independent healing and mythic traditions, the body is persistently mapped onto landscape—and vice versa—through stable pairings such as bone with stone, flesh with earth, and blood with water. Symbolic, analogical, projective, and constructivist accounts fail to explain this convergence or its internal consistency. This article argues that embodiment and dwelling share a common stability topology: layered gradients ranging from nearly fixed foundations to rapidly changing surfaces. The resulting ontological homology accounts for the recurring correspondences, their gendered and hierarchical deployments, and the cross-cultural rediscovery of the same architecture.
I. The Ethnographic Puzzle
Across an extraordinary range of otherwise unrelated healing traditions, the body keeps being described in the vocabulary of landscape, and the landscape keeps being described in the vocabulary of the body. Hippocratic medicine correlates the four humors with the four seasons and the four elements, and instructs the physician arriving in a new city to study its winds, its waters, and its exposure before examining a single patient, on the ground that the character of a population's ailments is set by the character of the ground it lives on. Ayurveda articulates a formal doctrine, the Loka-Purusha Siddhanta, in which the individual body is stated outright to be an exact replica of the universe, built from the same five elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, that compose everything else. Chinese medicine correlates the body's organs with the five phases, wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, each phase at once a season, a direction, an organ, and a stage of transformation, so that a physician diagnosing an imbalance in the liver is, in the same diagnostic gesture, locating that imbalance somewhere on a cycle shared with spring, with the colour green, and with the wind. South Asian traditions of semen loss treat the male body as a kind of reservoir, slowly filled over years and catastrophically drained in moments, using language interchangeable with the language used for wells, granaries, and irrigation channels, a vocabulary of storage and depletion this article will return to once the theoretical apparatus needed to take it seriously has been built. None of these traditions borrowed from any of the others, and yet each independently arrived at the conviction that the body cannot be understood except through the vocabulary of place, substance, and weather.
A second body of material, and for the purposes of this article the central one, makes the same point with even greater specificity, and this article treats it as the primary ethnographic corpus rather than as illustrative background. Comparative Indo-European linguistics and mythology have reconstructed, from evidence spanning Vedic Sanskrit, Old Norse, Avestan, Latin, and Greek, a coherent and remarkably stable system of correspondences between the parts of the body and the features of the land, and the system is thoroughly gendered. Flesh is earth. Bone is stone or rock. Blood is water, most often the sea. Hair is grass or trees. The skull is the sky. Running through the whole system is a consistent assignment of the softer, more perishable pairing, flesh and earth, to the feminine, and the harder, more enduring pairing, bone and stone, to the masculine. Men are described, praised, and mythologised as rock, bone, mountain, and oak: hard, upright, enduring. Women are described, praised, and mythologised as flesh, water, soil, and fluid: soft, yielding, generative. This is not an occasional poetic flourish confined to a handful of texts. It is a structural feature of an entire language family's inherited imagination, reconstructed independently by scholars working from myths of cosmic dismemberment, Vedic ritual homology, and the etymology of ordinary words, and it recurs with a consistency that a theory of coincidence or independent literary invention cannot easily explain.
Bruce Lincoln's reconstruction of the Indo-European creation myth, in which the cosmos is fashioned from the dismembered body of a primordial giant, Purusha in the Vedic tradition, Ymir among the Norse, Gayōmart among the Zoroastrians, shows the correspondence taken to its most literal possible extreme: the mountains are not compared to bones, they are bones, the actual transformed substance of an ancestral body. Mallory and Adams's summary of the reconstructed homology table, flesh to earth, bone to stone, blood to sea, hair to plants, skull to sky, eyes to sun, mind to moon, breath to wind, gives this correspondence the status of reconstructed vocabulary rather than mere theme. Brian K. Smith's account of the Vedic bandhu system shows the correspondence put to ritual work: the sacrifice was efficacious precisely because acting on the altar was understood to act simultaneously on the corresponding element of the cosmos and the corresponding element of the sacrificer's own body. None of this is a metaphor in the weak sense of a resemblance noticed and then elaborated for effect. It is presented, across every one of these sources, as an identity, and the puzzle this article sets out to solve is why that identity keeps being discovered, independently, by traditions with no contact with one another.
II. The Problem with Symbolic Explanations
The scholarship that has assembled this material has, on the whole, been content to describe it rather than explain it, and the explanations that have been offered tend to fall into one of four related moves, each of which restates the correspondence in different words rather than accounting for it.
The first move calls the correspondence symbolic. Bone symbolises endurance, stone symbolises endurance, therefore bone comes to symbolise stone. This is true as far as it goes, and it is also circular: it presupposes exactly the shared meaning it is meant to explain, since nothing in the concept of endurance forces it to attach to bone and stone rather than to, say, teeth and shells, or breath and wind, both of which are durable or persistent in their own way and neither of which occupies the central place in the homology system that bone and stone occupy.
The second move calls it analogy, drawing on the cognitive-linguistic tradition associated with George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, in which abstract or difficult domains are understood by mapping them onto more concrete, bodily grounded domains. This tradition has done more than any other to establish that such mappings are not decorative but constitutive of thought, and nothing in the present article disputes that finding. What the analogy account does not explain is directionality and selection: why the body should map so insistently onto landscape rather than onto some other concrete domain equally available to embodied cognition, and why, within landscape, certain features, stone, water, wind, rather than others, sand, cloud, ice, become the body's preferred counterparts across so many independent traditions.
The third move calls it projection, in the psychoanalytic or phenomenological sense: humans understand the world by projecting the felt structure of their own bodies onto it. This has the same difficulty as the analogy account, from the opposite direction. If the body is simply projected outward, there is no principled reason the projection should recruit exactly the same handful of landscape features, stone, water, mountain, wind, again and again, rather than distributing itself more evenly across everything a landscape contains.
The fourth move, cultural construction, treats the whole system as historically contingent, a set of associations a given culture happened to settle on and then transmitted to its members. This is the least explanatory of the four, since it converts the puzzle this article opened with, why unrelated cultures converge on the same pairings, into an assertion that they do not really converge at all, each culture's system being sui generis and any apparent overlap a matter of coincidence or diffusion still to be traced. The convergence is exactly what needs explaining, and cultural construction, taken on its own, treats convergence as something to be explained away rather than accounted for.
What none of these four moves asks, because none of them needed to in order to be locally plausible, is why flesh and earth, and not flesh and fire, or bone and cloud, are the pairings that recur. An explanation adequate to the ethnographic record has to do more than note that bodies and landscapes get compared. It has to explain why the comparisons sort themselves, with such consistency, along exactly the lines they do, and why the sorting comes out the same way in traditions that never spoke to one another.
There is a further test any adequate explanation should pass, and none of the four existing moves is built to attempt it. If the pairings were symbolic, analogical, projective, or culturally constructed in the ordinary sense, there would be no particular reason to expect the internal structure of the pairings to be consistent, no reason bone should always pair with the same kind of landscape feature rather than sometimes with mountains and sometimes, in a different mood or genre, with clouds. Yet the record shows exactly this consistency: bone recurs with stone and mountain, never with cloud or fire; blood recurs with water and rivers, never with stone or wind. A theory that explained the existence of body-landscape pairing without also explaining its internal consistency would have explained only half the phenomenon, and it is this second half, why the pairings sort themselves the way they do rather than scattering across every possible combination, that the account developed in the sections that follow is built to answer directly.
III. The Stability Topology of Embodiment
The explanation this article proposes begins from a distinction that has to be kept sharp from the outset, because the argument depends on not confusing it with something it is not. Embodiment is one of the mediations through which selfrecursive coordination, coordination that responds to how it is engaged with, actually occurs: the body is not a fixed backdrop to a life but an ongoing, responsive counterpart the living being who has it is continuously coordinating with. That responsiveness is categorical. A bone and a heartbeat are both, in this strict sense, equally selfrecursive, since both answer, on some timescale, to how the body that carries them is used, and nothing in what follows treats one as more embodied or more responsive than the other. A further pair of distinctions, how reliably a counterpart's change can be anticipated and how far it can be deliberately shaped, matters once this series turns to what a species capable of manufacturing its own anchors can do that inherited dwelling cannot. Neither is required yet.
What varies enormously, and what this article is actually about, is a different question the categorical distinction leaves entirely open: given that some part of the body is being coordinated with, how quickly does it change on its own, independent of any particular occasion of attention or use? A skeleton is selfrecursive in the strict sense, since bone density does actually respond to load, exercise, and diet, but it responds on a timescale of years, and across the span of an ordinary day a skeleton is, for every practical purpose, as unresponsive as a stone. A heartbeat is selfrecursive in exactly the same strict sense, and it responds to a sudden fright inside a single second. This difference in the rate at which a selfrecursive counterpart moves, not whether it moves at all, is the stability gradient this article traces, and it is a gradient this theory has not previously stated explicitly, though it has been implicit in every distinction the theory has drawn between what a body carries and what a body is doing at any given moment.
Once the body is examined along this axis rather than treated as a single, undifferentiated thing, it resolves into a layered structure. At the slow end sit the skeleton and the deep architecture of the joints, which alter over years and, past a certain age, alter mostly in the direction of loss. Slightly faster, but still measured in months and years, sits muscle memory and trained skill, plastic enough to be built and lost but never on a single occasion. Faster again, on a scale of days to weeks, sit the hormonal cycles that regulate reproduction, appetite, and mood, rhythmic rather than merely variable, returning to something like the same state on a schedule the body itself enforces. Faster still, on a scale of hours, sits the circadian rhythm that governs sleep, alertness, and body temperature. Faster again, on a scale of minutes, sits interoception in its ordinary sense, hunger, thirst, fatigue, the felt state of one's own insides. And at the fastest end of all, changing within single seconds, sit heartbeat, breath, and the immediate flush of an emotional response. Pain sits awkwardly across several of these bands at once, capable of the instantaneous, the acute, and the chronic, which is part of why it resists easy classification in every medical system that has tried to locate it, humoral, Ayurvedic, or biomedical alike.
None of these bands is more truly embodiment than any other. All of them are selfrecursive coordination with the same living being, differing only in how quickly the counterpart being coordinated with actually moves. But a body considered as a whole is not one point on this gradient. It is the entire gradient at once, a structure with a nearly fixed foundation and a rapidly changing surface, held together within a single organism, and it is this layered structure, and not any single feature of the body taken in isolation, that the rest of this argument depends on.
A tradition that had never heard of stability gradients arrived at strikingly similar architecture from its own direction. Ayurvedic dhatu theory describes bodily tissue as formed through a sequential transformation, food refined successively into blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow, and finally the most concentrated tissue of all, each stage slower to form and slower to replenish than the one before it. The theory is not stating a stability gradient in the vocabulary this article uses, and its physiology, a literal sequential conversion of one tissue into the next, is not biologically accurate. But the ordering it proposes, fast-forming and expendable at one end, slow-forming and precious at the other, tracks the same underlying axis this section has just derived independently, from bone at the slow, structural pole to blood and flesh nearer the fast, replenishable one. A tradition attending closely enough to the body's own workings, whatever theory of mechanism it happens to hold, keeps arriving at some version of the same layered order, because the order is there in the body to be found.
IV. The Stability Topology of Dwelling
Dwelling admits the same kind of layered structure, and for a directly parallel reason. The landscape a living being inhabits is, for the purposes of this argument, coordinated with nonrecursively: a mountain does not respond to how it is approached, and nothing that follows treats it as though it did. The two gradients this article compares have to be built on the same categorical footing for the comparison to mean anything, which is why this point is stated as plainly here as the equivalent claim about embodiment was stated above. What varies, again, is not whether the landscape answers back, since it never does, but how quickly its own state changes on a timescale independent of anyone attending to it.
At the slowest end of this second gradient sit mountains, river valleys carved over millennia, and the deep bones of a coastline, features a human lifetime is too short to watch change at all. A person is born, lives, and dies beneath the same skyline their great-grandparents knew, and the mountain that skyline depends on will still be recognisably itself for their own great-grandchildren. Slightly faster, on a scale that a single human generation can sometimes register, sit the slow migration of a river's course, the silting of a delta, the retreat of a glacier, changes a community's oldest members might describe having watched happen, even if no single year within their lifetime showed the difference. Faster again, on the scale of a year, sits seasonality itself, the return of cold, heat, rain, and drought on a cycle regular enough that entire agricultural and ritual calendars can be built on top of it with confidence, a regularity dependable enough that whole systems of medicine, Hippocratic and Ayurvedic alike, could treat the yearly round as a fixed backdrop against which everything faster is measured. Faster still, on the scale of a day, sits the solar cycle of light and dark that every embodied creature's own circadian rhythm has evolved to track, so reliably that the two rhythms, one in the sky and one inside the body, are barely experienced as separate at all. Faster again, on the scale of hours, sits weather in the ordinary sense, cloud, rain, and temperature, changeable enough to require daily attention but rarely surprising enough to overturn a season's general character. Faster still sit storms, capable of transforming a landscape's felt character within minutes and leaving behind consequences that outlast the storm itself by weeks. And at the fastest end of all sit wind and fog, which can alter completely within seconds and leave no trace of having done so, the most volatile surface a nonrecursive counterpart in this theory's vocabulary ever presents.
As with embodiment, no single band of this gradient is more truly dwelling than any other. A landscape considered as a whole is, exactly like a body considered as a whole, the entire gradient held together at once: a nearly permanent foundation, mountains, valleys, the shape of the land, beneath a rapidly changing surface of weather, light, and season. This parallel is not a coincidence this article is content to note in passing. It is the structural fact the rest of the argument depends on, because two mediations organised by the same shape, and not merely by a family resemblance between individual features picked out after the fact, are what makes systematic cross-mapping between them possible rather than accidental. A culture that had only ever noticed that mountains are large and bones are hard would have discovered a resemblance. A culture that organises its medicine, its myth, and its everyday vocabulary around the discovery that both domains are structured, top to bottom, on the same principle has discovered something considerably harder to arrive at by chance.
V. The Ontological Homology
Embodiment and dwelling, examined this way, turn out to be organised by the same underlying architecture: both are layered structures ranging from a nearly fixed foundation to a rapidly changing surface, and both are zoetic mediations, a term this article introduces here for the primary dimensions through which recursive life is actually lived, from the Greek zoe, life, as distinct from the poietic mediations, multimateriality and multisymbolization, through which such life is deliberately deposited into durable form. This is the claim this article calls the ontological homology, and it needs to be stated with some care, because it is a stronger claim than the ones the existing scholarship has offered, and the strength is exactly what does the explanatory work the symbolic, analogical, projective, and constructivist accounts could not.
Bone and stone are not compared because both happen to be hard. They are compared because both occupy the same region of two independently existing stability gradients, the near-fixed, slow-changing region, one gradient belonging to embodiment and the other to dwelling. Blood and rivers are not compared because both happen to be wet. They are compared because both occupy the fast-changing, continuously flowing region of their respective gradients. Breath and wind, hair and grass, mood and weather, all recur as pairings for the same structural reason: not an arbitrary cultural decision to notice a resemblance, but the recognition, arrived at independently and repeatedly, that two domains organised by the same underlying topology will present the same regions to any observer attending to either one closely enough to notice its internal structure at all. The pairing is not metaphorical resemblance dressed up as ontology. It is ontology, correctly perceived, expressed in the only vocabulary available before either domain had a name for its own internal structure.
Ordinary landscape vocabulary preserves this perception even where no one intends any metaphor at all. Headlands, foothills, the mouth of a river, the shoulder of a hill, the brow of a cliff: geographers including Denis Cosgrove and J. Douglas Porteous have noted that the traffic in this everyday naming runs overwhelmingly from body to land rather than land to body, and the present argument explains why the traffic should run in that direction without needing to invoke any special poetic intention on the part of whoever first used these words. A speaker reaching for a name for the point where a river begins to widen and slow, the fast-changing surface easing toward the sea, reaches for mouth because mouth already names the corresponding transition in a domain whose internal structure is more immediately felt. The naming is not decorative. It is the fossil record of a homology being used as a resource, by speakers who had no reason to doubt that landscape and body were built from the same architecture and every reason, given how naturally the vocabulary transferred, to go on assuming it.
This is what traditional medicine, across an extraordinary range of otherwise unconnected traditions, kept rediscovering. Hippocratic medicine's instruction that a physician must study the winds, waters, and exposure of a city before treating its patients is not advice to consult an external influence on the body. It is advice to read one instance of the shared topology, the landscape's fast-changing surface layered over its slow foundation, as a guide to the likely condition of another instance of the same topology, the body of whoever lives there. The correlation of the four humors with the four seasons and the four elements gives this insight a systematic vocabulary: blood with spring and air, yellow bile with summer and fire, black bile with autumn and earth, phlegm with winter and water. Galen's extension of the system into the four temperaments, and his observation that a person born in a hot, dry climate tends toward the choleric while a person born in a cold, wet climate tends toward the phlegmatic, pushes the same insight one step further: the surface of a landscape's gradient sets the surface of a body's gradient, because both are answering, on comparable timescales, to comparable forces. Melothesia, the mapping of zodiac signs and planets onto specific organs that structured medical practice from Babylon through the European Middle Ages, encodes the same underlying intuition in an especially literal form: the body's structure is legible in the sky's structure because both, at bottom, are instances of one architecture.
Ayurveda states the homology as doctrine rather than leaving it implicit. The Loka-Purusha Siddhanta holds that the individual is an exact replica of the universe, and the doctrine of the five great elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, treats these not as poetic categories but as the literal shared material of both body and cosmos, present in the body as solid tissue, fluid, metabolic heat, movement, and the cavities that make movement possible. Francis Zimmermann's account of the Jangala and Anupa ecological zones in classical Hindu medicine, the dry open land and the marshy wet land, each with its characteristic flora, fauna, and effect on the body's doshas, shows the homology operating as a practical clinical tool: a physician managing a patient's internal balance was, in the same act, managing that patient's relationship to an external topology occupying the same structural positions. Paracelsus's Renaissance revival of the doctrine, correlating each organ with a planet and each disease with the malign influence of that organ's celestial counterpart, and Leonardo's comparison of the earth's rivers to veins and its rocks to bones, are repeated, historically independent arrivals at the same structural recognition this article is now stating directly: two domains built from the same architecture will always be describable in each other's terms, and cultures that attend closely to either domain will discover this whether or not they possess a theory of why it is true.
What recurs across humoral pathology, Babylonian astral medicine, and Ayurvedic dosha theory is not any single proposed mechanism, since the mechanisms differ from tradition to tradition and often contradict one another. What recurs is the homology itself: the same pairing of bone with stone, blood with water, breath with wind, articulated independently by physicians who never read one another's texts. The mechanisms are each tradition's own historically specific account of how the correspondence works. The correspondence itself is what this article is tracking, and it is there to be found in the ethnographic and linguistic record regardless of which mechanism a given tradition proposed for it.
VI. Gender
If embodiment and dwelling share a single stability topology, a further question becomes askable that the symbolic and constructivist accounts could only ever assert, never derive: why does gender ideology recruit this topology so consistently, and why does it recruit it in exactly the direction it does, hardness assigned to men, softness to women, rather than the reverse?
The Indo-European material gives an unusually clear answer, because the assignment is not a loose cultural preference but a coherent system applied with real consistency across an entire language family. Flesh, the soft, mutable, fast-regenerating tissue of the body, positioned at the volatile end of the embodiment gradient, is paired with earth, the fertile, cultivable, fast-changing surface of the land, positioned at the volatile end of the dwelling gradient, and the pairing is assigned to the feminine. Bone, the hard, slow-changing structural tissue that outlasts the flesh built around it, positioned at the stable end of the embodiment gradient, is paired with stone, the enduring, slow-changing structural feature of the land, positioned at the stable end of the dwelling gradient, and the pairing is assigned to the masculine. This is not two independent decisions, one about bodies and one about landscapes, that happened to align. It is a single decision about where to draw a line across a shared topology, applied twice, once to embodiment and once to dwelling, and the alignment follows automatically once the line has been drawn in the same place both times.
The mythological record shows this line being drawn with striking explicitness. Lincoln's reconstruction of the Indo-European cosmogony, the sacrifice and dismemberment of a primordial figure whose body becomes the world, distributes the volatile and the stable regions of the body onto the corresponding regions of the landscape in the same act that creates the world at all: flesh into earth, bone into mountains, blood into rivers or the sea, breath into wind, skull into sky. The myth does not compare two already separate domains. It generates the landscape's topology directly out of the body's topology, in a single gesture, which is as strong a piece of evidence as ethnography could hope to find that the two were never experienced as separate systems needing to be linked by simile in the first place.
Burial practice extends the same logic from cosmogony into the ordinary handling of the dead, and it does so with a precision the myths only imply. Across many Indo-European cultures, interring a body in the earth was understood as a literal return of flesh to the substance it had always structurally belonged to, a reversal of the cosmogonic act rather than a new one, and the agricultural vocabulary that accompanies burial in text after text is exact rather than loosely poetic: the ground is ploughed, itself a widespread metaphor for intercourse, seeded with the dead, and expected, in due course, to yield a harvest of new life. The earth does not merely receive the flesh. It is repeatedly described as consuming it, digesting it, in language that treats the ground as doing to a body what a mother's body does to food, transforming one substance into another so that something else can grow. None of this makes sense as an arbitrary poetic choice among equally available alternatives. It makes sense as the same homology, worked out consistently, applied to the single event, death, that most directly tests whether flesh and earth were ever really thought of as two things rather than one.
Uli Linke's work on blood extends the same logic into the body's most volatile fluid: blood is dangerous and generative in the same breath, tied to both birth and to wounding, and its containment within the body reads, across the tradition, as a specifically masculine achievement, holding the volatile in check, while its flow, whether menstrual or maternal, reads as feminine, an alignment that only makes sense once blood has already been positioned at the fast, dangerous end of a shared gradient rather than treated as a substance with no inherent structural position at all.
The same logic organises hierarchy as well as gender, and it organises the social order too, not only the natural one. Brian K. Smith's account of the Vedic bandhu system describes a vertical ordering in which the head, associated with the sky and the sun, sits above the feet, associated with the earth, and this vertical ordering of the body is mapped directly onto both the cosmos and the social order, the Brahmin aligned with the head, the labouring classes with the feet. Dumézil's trifunctional hypothesis, reconstructing a Proto-Indo-European social structure organised around sovereignty, warfare, and production, finds the same three-part division encoded in the Purusha Sukta's account of the social classes emerging from different parts of the cosmic body, mouth, arms, thighs, feet. The Roman fable of Menenius Agrippa, in which the patricians are likened to the stomach that receives and distributes nourishment and the plebeians to the labouring limbs, shows the same body-derived hierarchy operating outside the Vedic world entirely, using the same underlying resource, a body whose parts are not interchangeable, to organise a social arrangement around the same architecture. None of this hierarchy is imported into the body-landscape homology from outside. It is generated by the homology, since a shared topology with a stable pole and a volatile pole will always be available for exactly this kind of ranking.
Semen-loss traditions, widespread across South Asia and reported in various forms well beyond it, are usually read either as a matter of physiological error or as an expression of ideas about masculinity a given culture happens to hold. The stability gradient this article has traced gives a third reading, more precise than either. The dhatu sequence already introduced places semen at the very end of the transformative chain, the most refined and slowest-forming tissue the body produces, requiring, by the tradition's own account, the longest accumulation of any bodily substance. This places semen at the most stable, slowest-accumulating end of the embodiment topology, the same end bone and stone already occupy, built up over months rather than replenished in an afternoon. The anxiety these traditions express is not a confused fear of an ordinary fluid. It is a structurally coherent response to a mismatch of rates: a substance that belongs, by the logic of its own formation, to the slow and stable pole of the gradient can nonetheless be lost at the volatile pole's speed, in a single event. Traditions that treat this loss as catastrophic are registering an accurate perception that accumulation and depletion are occurring on incompatible timescales, whatever further cultural elaboration a given tradition then builds on top of that perception.
VII. Conclusion: The Architecture Beneath the Comparison
The body and the world become each other's mirror not because a culture decided, arbitrarily, to describe one in terms of the other, but because embodiment and dwelling are organised by the same underlying architecture, a structure ranging from a nearly fixed foundation to a rapidly changing surface, and any tradition that studies either domain closely enough will eventually notice the other domain wearing the same shape. Traditional medicine, across Greece, Rome, Babylon, and India, kept encountering this architecture centuries before anyone had the vocabulary of stability gradients or zoetic mediations to state it directly, each tradition building its own account of the mechanism, humoral, astrological, elemental, on top of the same recurring pairing of bone with stone, blood with water, and flesh with earth. The pairing recurs because the architecture it tracks recurs. It does not depend on any one tradition's account of why.
This distinction sets a standard the rest of this argument, and the two articles that follow it, have to meet. It is not enough to show that a symbolic system existed and persisted. A structural explanation has to show why the specific pairings it produced were the ones available to be discovered, and why cultures with no contact with one another kept discovering the same ones. Symbolism, analogy, projection, and cultural construction could describe the persistence. Only a shared architecture, present in the domains being compared before anyone compared them, explains the convergence.
What remains to be explained is not why bodies and landscapes get compared, but what happens once a species capable of noticing this homology also becomes capable of manufacturing new ground of its own. Poiesis, the coupled work of multimateriality and multisymbolization, deposits durable, humanly made counterparts that do not merely occupy the stable end of an inherited topology but are built, deliberately, to sit there: a road, a wall, a name, a law. That is a different kind of anchor from a mountain or a bone, made rather than found, and its accumulation across generations is what the next article in this series calls sedimentation, and civilisation. Once a world is full of such anchors, they become available for a further purpose beyond the coordination they were built to serve. They become the vocabulary through which language itself tries to speak about the least stable thing a life contains, its relations with other people, which is where the third article in this series takes up the argument in turn.
Part II. The Ground We Made, the Ground We Found: Stability and Sedimentation of the Five Mediations
Abstract
For most of life’s history, stability was only found in nonrecursive dwelling. Human poiesis, through the coupled mediations of multimateriality and multisymbolization, first enabled recursive coordination to sediment into durable anchors. Tools, paths, writing, laws, archives are made to persist beyond their makers. This article distinguishes recursivity, stability, predictability, and controllability; maps the stability landscapes of the five mediations; and defines civilisation as the intergenerational accumulation of made anchors that restructure the mesocosm for all future recursive life, human and otherwise.
For most of the history of life, stability could only be found, never made. Living beings coordinated recursively through embodiment and being-with, the selfrecursive maintenance of a body and the interrecursive coordination of one body with others, while dwelling supplied the one mediation that was categorically nonrecursive and therefore the primary source of external anchoring available to any organism. Dwelling could not, however, be controlled. It offered an immense natural stability gradient, from the near-invariance of solar cycles and mountains to the volatility of weather, wind, fire, flood, and fog, and no living being had any say over which region of that gradient it happened to be born into.
Human poiesis altered this condition permanently. Through the coupled development of multimateriality and multisymbolization, recursive coordination became capable, for the first time in the history of life on this planet, of depositing itself into durable, relatively nonrecursive form. Tools, paths, walls, fields, buildings, names, calendars, maps, writing, money, laws, archives, and notations became made anchors: regions of stability a species manufactured rather than merely discovered, capable of persisting long after the recursive processes that produced them had ended.
Civilisation should accordingly be understood not primarily as urbanisation, state formation, agriculture, or cultural complexity in general, but as the cumulative sedimentation of recursive coordination into inherited multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors. Human beings did not simply adapt to a given dwelling. They began manufacturing new ground.
This article makes four contributions to the theory. It distinguishes recursivity, stability, predictability, and controllability, four properties routinely run together and that the whole argument depends on keeping apart. It gives the first complete stability profile of the five mediations, tracing each from its most settled to its most volatile region. It defines the two poietic mediations by their shared capacity to produce durable deposits, a capacity neither possesses alone. And it offers an ontological definition of civilisation as accumulated made anchoring, one that applies equally to a Palaeolithic cairn and a digital archive.
The broader implication runs through all four contributions at once. Rather than simply adding objects and symbols to a human world that would otherwise exist without it, poiesis recursively restructures the mesocosm within which all future recursive life, human and otherwise, must go on coordinating.
I. From Found Ground to Made Ground
Begin with two scenes.
In the first, a living being moves through a world whose recurring features it did not create. Sunrise arrives. Darkness falls. Temperature shifts with the season. Water runs somewhere and not everywhere. Shelter exists in some places and not others. Terrain rises and falls according to a geology no organism authored. Predators appear according to their own hunger and habit, food according to its own cycles of abundance and scarcity. The organism's task is to find, within this given arrangement, the differences that matter and coordinate its own life around them.
In the second scene, a human being wakes inside a room, checks a clock, walks along a road, opens a door with a key, reads a timetable, spends money, consults a map, and enters a building governed by written rules that nobody currently present composed. Almost every significant anchor in this second scene was made. The room was built. The clock was manufactured and calibrated. The road was laid. The key was cut to fit a lock that was itself designed. The timetable was compiled, printed, and distributed. The money is accepted only because an enormous number of strangers continue to treat it as though it held value. The map was surveyed, drawn, and reproduced. The rules were written down, and continue to govern the building only because people keep enforcing, citing, and obeying them.
Both scenes are dense with objects, weather, bodies, and other living beings, so the difference between them cannot be a difference of quantity. It lies instead in what the second scene's stable features actually are: not simply features of a world the waking human happens to have been born into, but sedimented prior coordination, the settled residue of decisions, disputes, agreements, and habits that other people, mostly now absent or dead, once worked out and then deposited into a form durable enough to outlast the working-out. What the waking human being primarily inhabits is not a given world but an accumulation.
An earlier article in this series established the terms this one depends on. Embodiment and dwelling, it argued, share a single stability topology, both ranging from a nearly fixed foundation to a rapidly changing surface, and the pairings that recur across traditional medicine and comparative mythology, bone with stone, blood with water, breath with wind, track the correspondence between these two topologies rather than any arbitrary resemblance. Embodiment remains selfrecursive even at its most stable regions, since a skeleton still answers, however slowly, to load and diet. Dwelling remains categorically nonrecursive throughout its own range, since a mountain does not respond to being climbed any more than a passing storm does, however differently the two behave from one moment to the next. Bone and mountain occupy homologous stable regions of two different mediations. Heartbeat and weather occupy homologous volatile regions of the same two.
That article mapped the stability landscape life had always found. This one asks how one lineage became capable of enlarging that landscape on purpose.
The governing proposition of what follows can be stated before it is defended. For most of life, the stable world is inherited from dwelling. In human life, an increasing share of the stable world is manufactured by poiesis.
The transformation is not an abrupt replacement of nature by culture, and nothing in this article treats it that way. Every humanly made anchor depends, at every point, on conditions poiesis did not create and cannot do without: bodies capable of making and using the anchor, relationships through which its significance is coordinated among the people who rely on it, and a dwelling that supplies the material, the location, the energy, and the physical limits within which the making can occur at all. A road requires a body to walk it, a shared understanding of where it leads, and terrain to be laid across. Poiesis adds a further capacity within life rather than a capacity that replaces it: the capacity to render some part of the future environment less contingent than the recursive interactions from which that part originally arose.
The sequence that follows proceeds in stages. It clarifies the difference between recursion and stability, and adds the further distinctions, predictability and controllability, the rest of the article requires. It maps the five mediations as five distinct stability landscapes. It establishes dwelling as the primordial form of anchoring life possessed before poiesis existed. It defines multimaterial and multisymbolic poiesis and explains why the two mediations only ever operate as a coupled pair. It traces sedimentation through both mediations in turn, and then through the cases in which the two work together inseparably. It offers a definition of civilisation built from this apparatus. And it closes by examining what made anchors cost to keep, what they do once they outlive their purpose, and what remains true of recursion even after so much of it has been deposited into apparently settled ground.
II. Four Distinctions the Theory Requires
The rest of this article collapses into a vague opposition between change and stability unless four properties, routinely run together in ordinary speech, are kept separate from the outset.
Recursivity is categorical. A counterpart is recursive when how it proceeds is affected by how it is engaged, and nonrecursive when nothing about how it is engaged alters its course. Within the recursive category, selfrecursivity names a living being's coordination with its own ongoing state, the body regulating itself, a memory reshaping itself in being recalled, an emotion feeding on its own expression, and interrecursivity names coordination between living beings each coordinating with the other in turn, so that neither party's next move can be read off the world the way a river's current can. A mountain does not respond to being climbed. A body does respond to how it is exercised. Another person may respond, in a further and still more demanding sense, to how they are addressed, since their response is itself already a response to the address. This category admits no degrees: a counterpart either answers back or it does not, and the whole apparatus that follows depends on that remaining a clean distinction rather than a matter of more or less.
Stability concerns the rate and extent of a counterpart's own variation, not its recursive category, and confusing the two has been the most common error this theory has had to correct in its own development. A bone is selfrecursive and usually highly stable, changing its density over years rather than hours. A heartbeat is equally selfrecursive and rapidly variable, changing within a single second. A mountain is nonrecursive and highly stable. Weather is equally nonrecursive and rapidly variable. Another person is interrecursive and may, on a given day, behave with great regularity, arriving at the same hour, responding to the same cues in the same way, but that regularity never resembles the stability of a wall or a clock, since it remains, at every moment, a regularity the other person is producing rather than one they are simply subject to, and it can change without notice.
Predictability concerns whether an observer can anticipate a counterpart's future variation, and it maps onto neither of the first two distinctions cleanly. The solar cycle is nonrecursive and extremely predictable, repeating with a regularity measured to fractions of a second. A storm is equally nonrecursive and only partly predictable, since the physical laws governing it are as fixed as the laws governing the sun, but the initial conditions determining any particular storm's path are too finely grained for an observer to track completely. Breathing is selfrecursive and highly predictable within ordinary limits, even while it responds continuously to the body's own state. A ritualised greeting is interrecursive and yet strongly patterned, predictable enough that a stranger to the custom can often learn to anticipate it within days. An intimate relationship may appear, for years, one of the most stable and predictable things in a life, and remain, throughout those years, open to a recursive transformation nothing in its prior pattern gave any warning of. Stability belongs to a counterpart's own rate of change. Predictability belongs to the relationship between that counterpart and whoever is trying to anticipate it, and the two separate in either direction: a highly stable counterpart such as a geological fault line can rupture without warning after centuries of apparent quiescence, while a rapidly changing counterpart such as a heartbeat under exertion can remain almost perfectly anticipatable throughout its variation.
Controllability is the decisive variable poiesis introduces, naming the extent to which a counterpart's future state can be deliberately shaped by an agent's design rather than merely anticipated by an agent's observation. Dwelling illustrates every combination of the first three properties without ever crossing into the fourth. The sun rises with total reliability, but no organism arranged the solar cycle, and none can adjust its timing. A mountain anchors navigation across an entire region precisely because it is stable and predictable, but no living being chose where it stands, and moving it lies outside the reach of any biological capacity. Weather can sometimes be anticipated a day or two in advance, but anticipating a storm is not the same as commanding it, and no degree of predictive skill converts a storm into something an organism can decide not to have. A poietic anchor differs because its stability has been, at least in part, designed for the purpose it now serves. A door stays closed because someone built a wall, cut an aperture, mounted hinges, fitted a door, added a lock, cut a key, and established a symbolic distribution of who is authorised to use it. Its stability has been organised, layer by layer, around a recursively relevant purpose that a boulder blocking a path was never organised around at all.
Four questions, applied to any counterpart, generate the framework the rest of this article uses. Does the counterpart respond to how it is engaged: recursivity. How quickly and extensively does it change on its own terms: stability. How reliably can an observer anticipate that change: predictability. To what extent can an agent deliberately shape its future state: controllability.
A fifth question can be introduced provisionally, and becomes indispensable once the article turns to poiesis specifically: how long can a formed state persist beyond the particular activity that produced it. Call this durability, or sedimentability. A shout dies the instant it stops being made. A carved inscription persists for as long as the stone that carries it survives erosion. Sedimentability names, more than a fifth independent axis running alongside the first four, the specific property poiesis exists to maximise: manufacturing an anchor means raising a counterpart's sedimentability far above what its recursive origins would, left alone, ever have allowed it to keep.
III. The Five Mediations as Different Stability Landscapes
Embodiment is zoetic and predominantly selfrecursive, and its defining peculiarity is not instability but the coexistence, within a single mediation, of deep responsiveness with enormous regularity. The gradient runs from the skeleton and the deep architecture of the joints, which alter over years and, past a certain age, alter mostly in the direction of loss, through trained skill and muscle memory, plastic enough to be built and lost but never on a single occasion, through the endocrine and reproductive rhythms that return the body to something like the same state on a schedule the body itself enforces, through circadian regulation on the scale of a day, through hunger, fatigue, and temperature on the scale of hours, to breathing and heartbeat on the scale of seconds, with pain sitting awkwardly across several of these bands at once, capable of the instantaneous, the acute, and the chronic in turn. Embodiment demonstrates, across this whole range, that recursivity generates stability at least as readily as it works against it. Much of embodied recursion is so reliable that it never rises above L1 and requires no attention: a healthy heart does not have to be monitored to keep beating correctly, and a trained hand does not have to be watched to keep its grip. This reliability is achieved rather than given, actively maintained against the same metabolic and mechanical pressures that would otherwise degrade it, and it can fail, hurt, fatigue, age, or change abruptly in response to injury or use in ways no nonrecursive counterpart could. Embodiment cannot, for exactly this reason, become a fully external anchor for anyone other than the organism whose embodiment it is. It remains the living process itself rather than a deposit that process has left behind, which is why another person can never simply consult a body the way they consult a clock.
Being-with is zoetic and interrecursive, and it possesses the greatest constitutive openness of any of the five mediations, since each participant may alter in response to the other's alteration without limit. Its range runs from species-typical recognition and attachment, through kin familiarity and habitual cooperation, through dominance relations and ritualised encounter, through negotiation and conflict, to outright betrayal and collective improvisation, at which point almost nothing about the coordination can be anticipated from what preceded it. Being-with can generate durable expectations across this whole range, a habit of trust built over years, a working partnership relied upon without a second thought, but those expectations remain vulnerable to recursive revision in a way nothing on embodiment's own gradient is, since they depend, at every moment, on another living being's continuing disposition to sustain them rather than on any process internal to a single body. Even the most dependable person a life contains remains capable of responding differently than expected, precisely because they are the kind of counterpart being relied upon rather than merely observed, and this is exactly why interrecursive life reaches, with such consistency, for external anchors that do not share this vulnerability. A promise becomes a ring. An agreement becomes a contract. Membership becomes a card, a uniform, a register, a building. Kinship becomes a name, a genealogy, an inheritance document, a grave. None of these anchors reproduces the relationship they mark. Each substitutes, for the relationship's own unstable reliability, an object or a mark whose reliability depends on nothing but its own material and symbolic persistence.
Dwelling is zoetic but categorically nonrecursive, and it contains the broadest natural stability gradient available to any pre-poietic form of life. Its range runs from astronomical regularity and deep geology, through terrain and long-term ecological pattern, through the seasons and the alternation of day and night, through the presence and movement of other animals and the availability of water, to weather, wind, fire, flood, and fog at the volatile end, where conditions can reverse within minutes and leave no trace of having done so. Dwelling supplies the original external anchor available to any living being because it persists independently of that being's engagement with it, in a way nothing on embodiment's or being-with's own gradients ever fully does. Three limits define what it can offer. It is unevenly stable, since a mountain and a passing storm are both, in the strict sense, dwelling, occupying opposite ends of the same mediation's range. It is not organised around any organism's purposes, since nothing about where a river runs or when a season turns was arranged with any species' convenience in mind. And it cannot, ordinarily, be controlled. Life before poiesis coordinates with dwelling on dwelling's own terms, discovering which of its regularities can be relied upon and adjusting its own rhythms to match them, without ever adjusting dwelling's rhythms in return.
Multimateriality is poietic, and it needs a definition sharper than simple engagement with material things, since every organism above the most minimal threshold of complexity interacts with matter in some form. Multimateriality, in the sense that matters here, is the forming and arranging of heterogeneous materials so that a prior coordination persists in their organisation after the coordination itself has ended. A sharpened edge, a container, a hearth, a path, a field, a wall, a roof, a bridge, a city, an energy grid: each makes recursion durable by altering the material conditions any later coordination will encounter. A path is repeated movement sedimented into altered ground. A wall is a history of exclusion or protection sedimented into stone or timber. A chair is a body's expected posture sedimented into wood and joinery. A granary is an anticipation of future scarcity sedimented into a structure built before the scarcity arrives. What remains, in every case, is not the coordination itself, which is gone, but a material arrangement that continues to make certain future actions easy and others difficult, long after everyone who shaped it has stopped attending to it or died.
Multisymbolization is equally poietic, and it allows distinctions, directions, classifications, memories, obligations, and expectations to persist beyond the immediate interrecursive event in which they first took shape. Naming, gesture, mark, number, calendar, map, writing, law, money, musical notation, scientific formula, classification, archive, database: each lets a symbol act across distance, across delay, across the death of whoever first used it, and across the replacement of one generation by the next. A symbol earns this capacity not by representing something accurately, a separate and secondary question, but by not altering itself in response to each new reader the way an ongoing conversation alters itself in response to each new reply. Its interpretation remains as recursive as any interrecursive event, since two readers, or the same reader on two occasions, may take a written law or a painted sign to mean different things. Its inscription does not: the mark on the page or the notch on the stick holds the same shape regardless of who approaches it or how, and this is precisely the property that lets multisymbolization deposit a durable anchor into a mesocosm that outlasts the specific occasion on which the anchor was made.
Zoetic mediations constitute the ongoing life process. Poietic mediations allow that process to leave a relatively durable deposit behind it. Dwelling is found nonrecursivity, present in the world before any organism arrived to make use of it. Multimateriality and multisymbolization together produce made nonrecursivity, nonrecursive counterparts that exist only because some earlier recursive coordination built them. Embodiment supplies recursive regularity, achieved and maintained rather than given. Being-with supplies recursive novelty, the openness no anchor of any kind can ever fully close. Poiesis arises, across this whole landscape, as a way of carrying coordination across exactly the instability embodiment cannot fully settle and being-with cannot settle at all.
IV. Dwelling Before Poiesis: The Original Distribution of Stability
For any form of life without poiesis, viable coordination depends entirely on identifying and exploiting the recurring features dwelling already supplies. Migratory routes, nesting sites, watering places, seasonal abundance, light cycles, thermal refuges, and prevailing winds are not representations of stability an organism constructs for itself. They are actual stable differences within dwelling, discovered rather than made, and a species' ecological strategy typically consists of learning which of them can be relied upon and shaping its own life history around that reliability.
The most reliable features of the early living world were also the features over which life had the least control. The sun is maximally dependable and maximally beyond reach: no organism arranged the solar cycle, and none has ever adjusted it. A mountain can anchor navigation across an entire region precisely because it does not move, but it cannot be relocated to somewhere it would serve an organism's purposes better. A river sustains life along its length and can, across the same stretch of years, flood it, change its course entirely, or dry to nothing, and no organism drinking from it has any say over which of these the river will do next. Dwelling gives life a world. It does not arrange that world around any particular organism's purposes.
Some regions of dwelling supply high anchoring: fixed orientation by the stars, a shelter used across many seasons, a spring that runs reliably, a route walked by generation after generation of the same migratory population, a season that arrives on schedule. Other regions supply almost none: a weather front, a disease outbreak moving through a population, a wildfire, a sudden predation event, a flood, an earthquake. The original mesocosm, taken as a whole, is best described as a field of unevenly anchorable processes rather than as simply stable or unstable, and every non-poietic species' survival depends on how well its own zoetic coordination has been tuned to the specific distribution of stability its particular stretch of dwelling happens to offer.
Life gains an enormous advantage wherever it becomes capable of moving a useful material to where it will be needed, preserving a useful shape once it has been found, marking a location so that it can be found again, storing food against a season that has not yet arrived, reproducing an instruction so a technique need not be rediscovered from nothing, leaving evidence for others not currently present, or making a future situation resemble a past intention closely enough that a plan formed today still applies when the future arrives. None of these capacities, considered individually, requires anything beyond ordinary embodied skill and the social learning already documented widely across the animal kingdom. What they point toward, pursued without limit, is a capacity dwelling alone never supplies and that only a further mediational development could: the capacity to rearrange future affordances on purpose, rather than simply discovering and exploiting the affordances dwelling already happens to contain.
V. The Coupled Emergence of the Poietic Mediations
Two simple narratives should be set aside before the actual relationship between the poietic mediations can be stated. One holds that humans first made tools and only much later attached symbolic meaning to them. The other holds that humans first developed language and only afterward used it to plan material production. Neither survives contact with how fully human poiesis actually operates, in which material form and symbolic distinction develop recursively together rather than one after the other. Material forms preserve distinctions symbolic articulation has already begun to draw. Symbolic distinctions, in turn, guide how material forms are made, corrected, and redesigned.
A worked object embodies a set of prior recursive decisions before any word is spoken about it: this edge rather than another, this size, this orientation, this sequence of actions taken to produce it, this intended relation to a particular body's grip and reach. The object does not require a symbolic meaning attached from outside in order to carry this history. Its form preserves the selections made while it was being worked, exactly as a path preserves the selections made by everyone who has walked it.
No symbol persists without embodiment in some medium capable of holding a mark: sound, gesture, pigment, incision, fibre, clay, paper, magnetic storage, or the arrangement of a building itself. Even spoken language, the least obviously material of these, depends on materialised bodily patterning, the shaped breath and the trained vocal apparatus, and on dwelling conditions stable enough to let a sound travel from speaker to listener without being lost. Durable multisymbolization, the kind capable of outlasting the occasion of its own utterance, requires a repeatable material support in every documented case.
A recurring circuit connects the two poietic mediations in practice, and the same seven-part structure recurs across every example this article goes on to examine. A recursive problem or possibility arises within embodiment or being-with, something that matters to a living being's own coordination. A selection follows: here rather than there, mine rather than yours, safe rather than dangerous, before rather than after. The distinction is deposited through material or symbolic forming, an arrangement, a mark, an object, a rule, and stabilises into something that persists beyond the event that first produced it. Later agents encounter the deposit as part of their own dwelling, and take it up recursively, interpreting, using, contesting, repairing, or transforming it according to their own needs. Their response leaves a further layer, and the circuit begins again from wherever that layer has left matters standing.
Sedimentation captures three features of this circuit no looser vocabulary of culture or tradition quite manages to hold together. Deposits accumulate rather than simply replacing one another. Later formations rest upon earlier ones, often literally, as a modern street plan rests upon the routes an earlier and now-vanished settlement once wore into the ground. And the origin of a given layer can become invisible while its effects persist undiminished, so that a grammatical distinction can go on organising how a language's speakers think long after the social relation that first produced the distinction has disappeared, and a law can remain fully operative after every participant in its original formulation has died. Poiesis, across its whole history, converts the recursive coordination of one period into part of the nonrecursive conditions the next period's coordination has to work within, whether that next period notices the conversion or not.
An earlier account of this same evolutionary threshold supplies the mechanism the preceding paragraphs have been describing in outline. Rudimentary multimateriality and rudimentary multisymbolization are each, considered separately, widespread across the animal kingdom, from chimpanzee tool traditions and beaver engineering to vervet alarm calls and the honeybee's waggle dance. What appears rare, and so far as the evidence currently extends unique to the lineage that produced Homo sapiens, is a sustained, bidirectional, cross-generationally persistent, and open-ended coupling between the two, in which material innovation regularly opens new symbolic possibilities and symbolic innovation regularly opens new material ones, with neither mediation reaching a point at which the mutual elaboration exhausts itself. The coupling depends, further, on multisymbolization operating specifically in what has elsewhere been called its reference-to-absence mode, standing for a technique not currently being performed, a maker not currently present, a use not yet arisen, rather than in the coordination mode a vervet's alarm call or a honeybee's dance never leaves. This combination, and not tool use or symbolic communication considered on its own, lets material innovation be planned, taught, remembered, and redesigned independently of whatever is immediately at hand, which is the specific capacity sedimentation depends on throughout the remainder of this article.
VI. Multimaterial Sedimentation: Manufacturing New Terrain
The central correction this section makes to ordinary accounts of technology can be stated as a single proposition. Human beings do not primarily manufacture objects. They manufacture future affordances. A cup, far more than a shaped piece of clay or metal, stabilises the possibility of containing and transporting liquid, available to anyone who picks it up, on any later occasion, without that possibility needing to be reinvented. A road stabilises a route. A wall stabilises a boundary. A bridge stabilises a crossing. A bed stabilises a bodily posture and an expectation about when and where rest will happen. A granary stabilises availability across a season of scarcity that has not yet arrived when the granary is built.
A path shows the whole mechanism with unusual clarity, because nothing about it requires deliberate design at any single step. It begins as repeated recursive movement, several bodies crossing the same rough ground toward the same destination. Repeated passage alters the ground, compressing soil, wearing away vegetation, exposing a line easier to see and easier to walk than the ground on either side of it. Altered ground then guides later movement, since a visible, already-compressed line is easier to follow than open terrain, and later movement deepens the path further. Eventually the path becomes an inherited instruction built directly into dwelling, no longer dependent on any single traveller's memory of where to go. Nobody has to command each new traveller to take this particular route. The ground itself now carries the coordination that produced it, redistributing the probability of future movement in the same direction long after the original travellers are gone.
Architecture escalates the same mechanism decisively: rather than merely using dwelling, it manufactures local dwelling conditions of its own, inside against outside, open against closed, warm against cold, visible against hidden, public against private, sacred against profane, accessible against inaccessible. Architecture reorganises dwelling materially, producing a version of it whose boundaries and gradients have been chosen rather than merely encountered. A building is best described not as an object placed within a world that already existed independently of it, but as an attempt to manufacture a world, at whatever local scale, with a stability profile its makers wanted rather than one dwelling would otherwise have supplied on its own terms.
Roads, sewers, water systems, electrical grids, ports, and communication networks let coordination occur without fresh interrecursive negotiation on every occasion it is needed. Infrastructure is stored cooperation in the most literal sense available, since the disputes, agreements, and labour that produced it do not have to be reenacted every time someone draws water or sends a message. But infrastructure is stored hierarchy in exactly the same measure that it is stored cooperation, since where the roads lead, whose homes receive water, which bodies fit through which entrances, which activities are permitted where, and which territories are made reachable at all are decisions sedimented as durably as the infrastructure's more obviously practical functions, continuing to organise who benefits and who does not long after the decisions themselves have been forgotten.
The strongest image available for what multimaterial sedimentation eventually produces is geological rather than technological. Poiesis creates geological function without geological timescale. Cities, walls, roads, dams, and institutional buildings become features later inhabitants encounter much as earlier life encountered terrain: difficult to alter without an effort disproportionate to any individual's resources, channelling movement along lines nobody currently living chose, organising what is visible and what is hidden, surviving the deaths of everyone who made them, and eventually presenting themselves to a new generation not as decisions at all but simply as the way the world is. Civilisation, examined at this level, manufactures its own bedrock out of yesterday's decisions, at a rate no geological process could approach.
VII. Multisymbolic Sedimentation: Manufacturing Durable Distinctions
Interrecursive coordination, left to its own zoetic resources, ordinarily depends on presence: two parties responding to one another in real time, in the same place, within the same stretch of time. Symbols let absent people, past events, unstated intentions, and standing obligations remain recursively relevant across distance, across delay, across death, and across the replacement of one generation of participants by another that never met the first.
A name stabilises identification across every change its bearer undergoes. The person named changes, physically and otherwise, across a lifetime. Their relationships change. The contexts in which they are encountered change beyond recognition. The name persists as a point of symbolic recurrence letting all of this be tracked as the history of a single, continuous someone rather than a sequence of unconnected encounters. Naming ranks among the most elementary forms multisymbolic anchoring ever takes, and one of the oldest.
Calendars and clocks show poiesis building directly on dwelling rather than replacing it, in a sequence that recurs throughout the rest of civilisation's poietic history. The solar cycle is found stability, present in dwelling before any calendar existed to mark it. A calendar is a made segmentation of that found stability, dividing an undifferentiated recurrence into named, countable units. A clock is a further, material-symbolic apparatus multiplying temporal anchors well beyond anything dwelling supplies unaided, subdividing a single day into units no unaided perception of sunlight could reliably distinguish. Institutions then coordinate around the units the calendar and the clock have jointly produced, scheduling meetings, payments, and rituals to divisions of time that exist only because they were made, layered on top of a solar regularity that required no making at all.
Writing deposits speech outside the event of speaking, preserving not interrecursivity itself, the living, mutually adjusting exchange between two speakers in a shared moment, gone the instant it ends regardless of what gets written down afterward, but selected symbolic products of that exchange, chosen and fixed in a form that can travel to readers the original speakers never anticipated. A written promise is accordingly not the living relation of trust between the parties who made it. It is a durable anchor to which later interaction, including interaction among people who were not present when the promise was made, can subsequently be referred.
Law exemplifies the same conversion carried through several distinct stages: a dispute produces a judgement, a judgement accumulates into precedent, precedent hardens into codification, codification is enacted as statute, and statute is administered by an institution built to apply it beyond the circumstances of its original case. Each stage removes some dependence on the specific people who took part in the original dispute while increasing the resulting anchor's portability and durability, so that a rule first worked out to settle one quarrel between two named parties can eventually govern millions who have never heard either party's name. Law never becomes wholly nonrecursive at any of these stages, because interpretation, enforcement, contestation, and revision remain living, interrecursive processes throughout. The legal text is sediment. The legal order is the recurring uptake of that sediment by people who go on disputing what it means.
Money stabilises valuation without eliminating valuation as an ongoing, interrecursive process. What it lets a population do is treat a prior collective coordination, never fully settled and constantly renegotiated at the margins, as though it confronted any single later actor as a simple, given measure rather than as the outcome of an argument still technically in progress. This combination, a material or symbolic carrier standing in for a coordination that has never actually stopped moving, makes money one of the clearest instances anywhere in civilisation of a multisymbolic anchor doing the work this section has been describing throughout.
Archives, diagrams, musical scores, mathematical formulae, taxonomies, and databases preserve distinctions at a scale no embodied memory, however well trained, could sustain on its own. They make cumulative knowledge possible, since a finding does not have to be rediscovered by each new investigator. They make reproducibility possible, since a procedure recorded in sufficient detail can be repeated by someone who never watched it performed. They make coordination across distance possible, and they let an institution inherit a memory belonging to people who were never, at any point, its own members. Multisymbolization, across all these cases, turns one generation's selective attention into the next generation's inherited environmental structure, exactly as multimateriality turns one generation's movement into the next generation's path.
VIII. Multimateriality and Multisymbolization Always Work Together
This section exists to prevent the material and symbolic accounts of sedimentation, developed separately across the two preceding sections for the sake of clarity, from hardening back into the material and symbolic split the whole argument has been built to overcome.
A boundary is never made real by any single element on its own, requiring instead a fence or a wall, a map on which the boundary is drawn, an ownership category naming what falls on either side of it, signs posted along its length, and an enforcement practice treating an unauthorised crossing as a meaningful event rather than a neutral one. Remove the material element and the boundary survives only as an unenforceable claim. Remove the symbolic element and the material element survives only as an arbitrary obstruction nobody has reason to respect.
A granary requires storage architecture, a cultivated crop to store, measuring devices to track what has been stored, records of who contributed what and who is owed what in return, ownership rules governing access, a calendar establishing when withdrawal is permitted, and distribution obligations specifying who receives a share and on what terms. A road requires altered ground, signs and names identifying it, maps recording its route, traffic rules governing its use, a legal jurisdiction determining who is responsible for it, and a maintenance schedule keeping it passable. A temple requires a building, an icon or image, ritual notation specifying how the ritual is to be performed, a myth explaining what the ritual means, rules of restricted access, a calendar of observance, and an office of authority vested in whoever conducts the ritual. A university requires campuses, libraries, timetables, degrees, disciplinary categories, archives, examination rules, and employment contracts, and none of these alone would constitute a university in any sense recognisable to anyone who has attended one.
These examples show together that civilisation is best understood not as a material base with a symbolic superstructure built on top of it, in the manner of the older theoretical traditions that once organised debate around exactly this question, but as an ongoing poietic coupling, in which material anchors make symbolic distinctions harder to ignore, since a wall reminds more forcefully of a boundary than a verbal claim ever does, and symbolic anchors make material forms reproducible and governable, since a wall without a recognised boundary attached to it is rubble waiting to be repurposed, while a boundary with no material manifestation is difficult to enforce against anyone determined to dispute it. Together, and only together, material and symbolic anchoring produce the durable mesocosmic facts the rest of this article calls sedimentation.
IX. Civilisation as Accumulated Anchoring
The markers most commonly proposed as definitions of civilisation, cities, agriculture, writing, state organisation, hierarchy, monumental architecture, and technological complexity, are not competing accounts this article needs to adjudicate between. Each names something real. None names the process producing all of the others, and each, examined closely, turns out to be a particular manifestation of accumulated poietic deposit rather than an independent phenomenon in its own right. A city is an especially dense concentration of multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors. Agriculture is a system for making dwelling's own seasonal stability partly controllable. Writing is multisymbolic sedimentation applied specifically to speech. State organisation is multisymbolic sedimentation applied to authority and obligation across a population too large for interrecursive coordination alone to hold together.
Civilisation can accordingly be defined as the cumulative, intergenerational sedimentation of recursive coordination into multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors that restructure the conditions of later life.
Each part of this definition is doing specific work. Cumulative marks that deposits build on previous deposits rather than replacing them outright. Intergenerational marks that they outlast the particular makers who produced them. Sedimentation marks that origins become layered and, over time, partly obscured, so a later inhabitant encounters the deposit without necessarily knowing, or needing to know, what recursive coordination first produced it. Recursive coordination marks that every deposit, however settled it now appears, began in living activity once as open and uncertain as any interrecursive exchange happening today. Multimaterial and multisymbolic marks that both mediations are required, since neither alone produces a durable social fact, as the preceding section showed case by case. Anchors marks that the deposits stabilise future possibilities rather than merely recording past ones. And restructure marks the definition's most consequential clause: civilisation organises what can happen next, rather than simply recording what has already happened, for people who had no part in producing the record now shaping their options.
A careful distinction separates culture from civilisation as this article uses the terms. Culture is the ongoing cultivation and transmission of recursive life across all five mediations, and it can exist, and has existed for the greater part of human history, alongside comparatively limited durable sedimentation, since a great deal of cultural transmission relies on embodied practice and living memory rather than on written record or monumental structure. Civilisation names the especially extensive accumulation of poietic deposits specifically, the point at which sedimentation has grown dense and layered enough that inherited anchors, rather than living memory, become the primary medium through which a population coordinates with its own past. This distinction prevents civilisation from collapsing into a moral ranking of societies, an association the word has carried since long before this article's use of it. Naming a society more civilised in the sense defined here is a claim about the extent and density of its accumulated poietic deposits, not a claim about the superior worth of the people who produced them.
Human beings inherit a great deal more than genes, environments, or shared meanings in the loose sense that word is often used. They inherit organised anchors: routes, tools, buildings, categories, languages, offices, debts, rights, borders, archives, and methods, each one a settled residue of coordination that other, mostly absent or dead, people once worked out under conditions no longer available for inspection. Human development, at every stage of every life, occurs inside the accumulated selections earlier generations made and then deposited into durable form. The dead continue to organise the living not through any supernatural agency but through the entirely material and symbolic fact that their recursive activity has been sedimented into the ground the living now have no choice but to coordinate within.
Made anchors, once accumulated at sufficient scale, enable forms of coordination no purely zoetic mesocosm could sustain: larger collectives than face-to-face familiarity could hold together, longer projects than any single lifetime could see through, coordination across distances no unaided body could travel in useful time, coordination among strangers who will never meet, specialisation deep enough that no single person could reproduce the whole of what a population collectively knows how to do, cumulative inquiry that keeps building on results its current practitioners did not personally establish, and institutional memory surviving the complete turnover of an institution's membership many times over. Civilisation, understood this way, expands what recursive coordination can achieve, purchased at the cost of an ever larger, ever more demanding stock of nonrecursive deposits that this expansion depends on and that someone, generation after generation, has to keep in working order.
X. The Ambivalence of Anchors: Power, Rigidity, and Maintenance
Stability, across this article's argument so far, has been treated as an achievement. It carries no guarantee of virtue on its own, and this section exists to correct any impression to the contrary before the argument closes.
Every made anchor deposits a selective history rather than a neutral one. A road privileges some destinations over others simply by existing, since the places it does not reach become, by comparison, harder to get to than they would be in a world with no road at all. A category foregrounds some differences and quietly discards others, since nothing falling outside a classification's terms can be addressed through it. A form permits some answers and forecloses others by the shape of the space it leaves for a reply. A border secures some people inside its line and excludes others outside it, by the same act. An archive preserves some events in detail sufficient for later inquiry while allowing others to disappear from the record entirely, often without anyone at the time noticing which kind of event was which. Poietic anchors, across every one of these cases, are congealed valuations rather than neutral supports, whatever appearance of neutrality their durability eventually lends them.
Those holding greater poietic power can make their own preferred coordination confront everyone else as though it were simply the stable, given shape of reality, rather than a decision that could, in principle, have been made otherwise. Law, property, an official language, architecture, urban planning, bureaucratic form, technical standard, and classification system all function this way when set by the few and encountered by the many as fixed conditions rather than live arguments. Power, examined through this article's own apparatus, consists in significant part in the capacity to sediment one's own recursive preferences into other people's dwelling, so thoroughly and so durably that those preferences eventually cease to be recognised as preferences at all and are instead simply lived in, the way a fish lives in water.
An anchor can persist well past the point at which the problem it was built to address has changed beyond recognition. A rule drafted for one set of circumstances continues to apply, verbatim, to circumstances its drafters never anticipated and would very possibly not have endorsed. A building constructed around one pattern of use goes on preventing adaptation to a different pattern long after the first pattern has become obsolete. A category built to capture one distinction distorts every new case it is subsequently forced to classify. A curriculum preserves a discipline's past commitments well past the point at which the discipline itself has moved on. An infrastructure built around one technology creates a path dependence shaping, and constraining, every technology that follows it. Sedimentation makes coordination durable across time. The same property, once the coordination it preserves has stopped fitting the circumstances it now governs, makes that coordination difficult to change.
No made anchor is permanent in any absolute sense, whatever its apparent solidity suggests. Roads decay. Texts become unreadable as the languages and scripts that carried them fall out of use. Living languages themselves change, at a pace speakers rarely notice from inside their own generation. Institutions lose the legitimacy that once let their rulings go unquestioned. Databases corrupt. Buildings collapse without upkeep. Money ceases to be trusted the moment enough people stop believing it will still be accepted tomorrow. The distinction this article's whole argument depends upon runs not between a changing, living world and an unchanging, artefactual one, but between processes changing at different rates and through different mechanisms, some of them so slow relative to a human lifetime that they present themselves as though they were not changing at all. Maintenance, understood this way, is recursive labour devoted specifically to preserving a counterpart's nonrecursive affordances against exactly the forces that would otherwise erode them, and every anchor examined across this article, without exception, depends on someone continuing to perform that labour.
A deposit accomplishes nothing on its own unless it becomes recursively relevant again to someone who takes it up. A book nobody reads is stable, in the sense this article has defined stability, and entirely inactive in every other sense that matters. A law nobody enforces is inscribed but ineffective. A ruined road remains material fact but may no longer guide anyone's movement. An uncatalogued archive preserves its traces while remaining useless for any inquiry that needs to find them. Sedimentation stores a possibility of coordination. Recursive uptake, by a living being who returns to the deposit and puts it back to work, actualises that possibility, and a deposit can sit dormant for centuries before someone does.
Civilisational collapse, viewed through this apparatus, can be redescribed as the loss of a population's capacity to maintain its own deposits, interpret its own inherited symbols, reproduce its own inherited techniques, or coordinate around the anchors it has inherited, rather than as the simple physical disappearance of the anchors themselves. Material remains can persist for centuries after the recursive systems needed to animate them have disappeared entirely, which is exactly what a ruin is: sediment whose organising recursion has been lost, its stones and inscriptions still there for anyone who cares to look, its capacity to coordinate anyone's life gone.
XI. Poiesis Redistributes Recursion Rather Than Ending It
Human beings manufacture anchors because recursive life is uncertain in ways no organism can simply will away, and this section states, as plainly as possible, that no anchor ever succeeds in removing that uncertainty for good. A contract can stabilise the terms of an agreement without being able to guarantee the trust the agreement was meant to formalise. A wall can stabilise a boundary without eliminating the conflict the boundary was built to contain. A clock can stabilise coordination among people who need to meet without ensuring that any of them actually arrives. A diagnosis can stabilise a condition symbolically, giving it a name that travels across specialists, records, and institutions, without exhausting the embodied process of the patient who actually lives with it.
What poietic deposits move is not recursion itself but the site at which recursion has to occur. Instead of renegotiating a route every day, travellers follow a road someone else laid down. Instead of remembering an agreement afresh at every encounter, parties consult a document instead. Recursion never disappears from the system. It reappears around interpretation, since a document has to be read and its meaning agreed upon before it can settle anything. It reappears around maintenance, since the road has to be kept passable by someone. It reappears around enforcement, since a rule with no one willing to apply it is only ink. It reappears around exception, since every rule eventually meets a case its makers did not foresee. It reappears around resistance, since anyone bound by an anchor they did not choose retains the capacity to refuse it. And it reappears around revision, since every anchor, sooner or later, has to be renegotiated by living people rather than simply inherited unchanged. Rather than removing this work, the anchor changes where it happens and who ends up bearing its cost.
The paradox at the centre of this article can now be stated in a single sentence. Manufacturing nonrecursive anchors makes a vastly greater volume, and a vastly greater reach, of recursive life possible than would otherwise exist, rather than making human life less recursive overall. Writing allows an argument to be conducted across centuries between people who never met. Law allows conflict to be pursued and resolved at an institutional scale no direct confrontation between two disputing parties could reach on its own. Money allows valuation to be coordinated among strangers who share no other relationship at all. Architecture allows collective life to recur, gathering after gathering, inside spaces built once and used for generations. Notation allows a composition or an experiment to be re-performed by people who never watched it performed the first time. Poiesis, in every one of these cases, expands the reach of recursive life precisely by stabilising the selected conditions that let recursion travel further than an unassisted body or an unassisted relationship ever could on its own.
XII. Conclusion: The Ground Beneath Future Life
Return to the two scenes this article opened with. The mountain was found. The road was made. The solar cycle recurs independently of anything life has ever done to it. The calendar takes that recurrence and turns it into a humanly organised expectation nobody could read directly off the sky alone. Bone offers a body its own deep, selfrecursive stability. The building takes that same principle of stability and extends it outward into a constructed environment no single body could have produced or could now maintain alone.
The decisive human transformation was not simply the making of tools, nor the acquisition of language, considered as separate achievements. It was the coupled emergence of two poietic mediations through which recursive processes, for the first time in the history of life on this planet, became capable of being deposited into relatively nonrecursive form and handed on to people who took no part in producing them.
The three-layer ontology this article has been assembling can now be stated as a whole. Zoetic life continuously mediates itself through embodiment, being-with, and dwelling, exactly as it always has and exactly as a wide range of other species continue to do with great sophistication. Dwelling supplies the primordial external distribution of stability available to any such life, uneven, uncontrollable, and indifferent to any particular organism's purposes. Poiesis expands that distribution, through multimaterial and multisymbolic sedimentation working always as a coupled pair, into a made ground no organism before this lineage had ever produced for itself.
Civilisation, on the account this article has developed at length, is life making ground for life that has not yet arrived, rather than the presence of cities, or of writing, or of the state, or of any other single marker this article's ninth section already showed to be a symptom rather than a cause. It names the accumulating, intergenerational fact of anchors deposited by the dead and inherited by the living, anchors that stabilise some possibilities and foreclose others, that require constant maintenance to remain anything more than ruin, and that redistribute recursion rather than ever managing to end it.
One further step remains open, and this article does not attempt to take it. Once human beings inhabit a world dense with walls, foundations, bridges, paths, bonds, contracts, roots, networks, and structures, these made anchors become available for a further purpose beyond the practical coordination they were built to serve. They become the raw material through which speakers attempt to describe the least stable and most deeply recursive dimension of life there is: their relations with one another. The next question this series pursues is why, whenever human beings try to speak about love, trust, recognition, belonging, and betrayal, they so often find themselves saying, in one form of words or another, that people are rocks, that relationships are buildings, and that a shared life is a road.
Part III. Things Carry Us Because They Don’t Talk Back: How Actor-Network Theory Got Multimateriality, Mediation, and Recursivity Backwards
Abstract
Actor-Network Theory attributes agency to nonhumans because they make an agentive difference. This article argues the opposite: scallops, speed bumps, maps, balls and black boxes carry coordinative weight precisely because they do not respond like actants. Drawing on five mediations and three coordination types—nonrecursive, selfrecursive and interrecursive—it re-reads Callon’s scallops, Serres’s quasi-object, immutable mobiles, black-boxing, Mol’s body multiple and Law’s topologies. Things stabilise collective life as nonrecursive deposits, not agents. Symmetry therefore erases the distinction that explains why durable objects are manufactured at all.
I. The Question ANT Asked and the Question It Should Have Asked
Actor-Network Theory asks, of any entity that makes a difference to an outcome, whether it has agency. Posed this way, the question answers itself in exactly the direction Bruno Latour, Michel Callon, and John Law wanted it to: a scallop larva that fails to attach to a collector line has made an enormous difference to a research programme, a speed bump has made a measurable difference to the velocity of every car that crosses it, and if making a difference is what agency means, then scallops and speed bumps have it, alongside the scientists and drivers who thought they were the only actors in the room. Bruno Latour's own formula for this, that when one entity acts, others proceed to action, is offered as a definition general enough to cover a person, a gun, a ball, and a ledger without distinction. The principle of generalised symmetry that follows, treating human and non-human actants with the same conceptual vocabulary, has been received for three decades as ANT's most radical and most valuable contribution: a refusal to let the old bifurcation between active subjects and passive objects go on organising the human sciences.
This article argues that the question was wrong from the start, not because things do not matter, but because ANT's own best evidence, examined without the vocabulary that was brought to it in advance, shows the opposite of what ANT concludes from it. Scallops, speed bumps, ledgers, maps, and rugby balls carry the enormous coordinative weight ANT correctly documents them carrying, not because they have been quietly granted a portion of agency after all, but because they have none, in the specific and technical sense that matters: they do not respond to how they are engaged with. A theory of coordination that has a name for this distinction, and asks, of any counterpart, whether it answers back, arrives at a completely different account of what a scallop, a speed bump, a ledger, and a ball are actually doing, one that explains ANT's own richest material more precisely than ANT explains it itself, and explains, in addition, several things ANT has never been able to explain: why symmetry looks radical and functions conservatively, why the theory cannot locate power, and why it struggles with anything that outlasts the network that first assembled it.
The argument proceeds by taking ANT's own canonical cases in turn, in something close to the order they are usually taught: the scallops, the quasi-object, the immutable mobile, the black box, the sociology of translation, Latour's own taxonomy of non-human agency, Mol's multiple body, and Law's topologies, before turning to what ANT's critics and rivals, Bloor, Harding, Harman, Bennett, and Barad, have each seen and each still missed. Every case is examined using the same apparatus: five mediations, three types of coordination, and the levels through which a coordination that has strained is registered, named, stabilised, and returned to ease. None of this apparatus is hostile to what ANT actually found in the field. It is hostile only to the single word, agency, that ANT insisted on using to describe it.
II. Five Mediations, Three Types: The Apparatus ANT Never Built
Human coordination proceeds through five irreducible mediations, embodiment, being-with, dwelling, multimateriality, and multisymbolization, and every concrete situation, a laboratory, a fishing bay, a rugby pitch, involves all five at once, in different proportions of salience rather than in isolation from one another. Embodiment is the register of a living body regulating itself. Being-with is the register of one living being coordinating with another who is coordinating back. Dwelling is the register of place, season, and terrain. Multimateriality is the register of substances shaped and arranged. Multisymbolization is the register of marks, signs, and notations. ANT's own vocabulary moves fluently across all five without ever separating them, which is the first and most consequential thing it gets wrong, because the five mediations do not behave alike, and folding them into a single word, actant, discards the very distinctions a theory of things needs most.
The second axis matters even more for what follows. Coordination between a living being and any counterpart is of exactly one of three kinds, and the kind is settled by a single question: does the counterpart respond to how it is engaged with. Where it does not, coordination is nonrecursive: a stone, a road, a scallop larva's fixed biological programme, a ball obeying the physics of leather and air pressure, none of these alter their own course because of how a living being approaches them. Where a counterpart does respond, and the counterpart is internal to the coordinating being's own body, coordination is selfrecursive: a rower adjusting stroke to fatigue, a driver's foot easing off the accelerator as a jolt is anticipated. Where a counterpart responds and is external, another living being coordinating back in a loop neither party alone controls, coordination is interrecursive: two fishermen negotiating a price, a laboratory team arguing over an inscription's meaning, a research director enrolling a funding body.
This distinction is categorical rather than a matter of degree. A counterpart either answers back or it does not, and nothing about how forcefully, how reliably, or how consequentially it fails to answer back moves it into a different category. A scallop larva that determines the fate of an entire research programme by simply failing to attach to a collector line has made an enormous difference to an outcome without the larva doing anything that qualifies as responding to how it was engaged with. The larva's failure to attach is exactly as nonrecursive as its success would have been. What varies, and varies enormously, is not the larva's type but the cost and difficulty of coordinating with it, a variable this theory calls stability, entirely separate from the categorical question of whether the counterpart is recursive at all.
A further apparatus completes the picture. Coordination that has been running smoothly, selfrecursive or interrecursive, sometimes strains: something registers as wrong, which this theory calls L2. The strain is named specifically enough to be acted on at L3. Acting on it produces a stabilised, portable counterpart, a deposit, at L4. And once that deposit exists and is taken up, coordination with it settles into ease at L1, not because anyone has forgotten the difficulty that produced it, but because the difficulty has been converted into a form nobody has to solve again. A deposit of this kind, a map, a ledger, a law, a manufactured object, is a nonrecursive counterpart carrying the settled product of coordination that was once selfrecursive or interrecursive, available now for nonrecursive use by anyone who did not take part in producing it. This is the apparatus ANT's own best material keeps describing without the words for it, and the rest of this article shows exactly where.
III. The Scallops of St Brieuc Bay: Ground Mistaken for a Partner
Callon's 1986 study of three marine biologists attempting to establish scallop cultivation in St Brieuc Bay is ANT's founding parable, and it repays reading with the three-type distinction directly in hand, because every actor in the story falls cleanly on one side of it or the other, and the paper's own drama depends on the reader not noticing this.
The three biologists are engaged in interrecursive coordination with the fishing community, whose cooperation must be negotiated, and with the wider scientific community, whose credence must be secured through argument, publication, and evidence that will withstand challenge. This negotiation is interrecursive throughout, in the fullest sense the term carries: fishermen respond to the researchers' proposals, and the researchers adjust their proposals in response, in a loop neither side controls alone. The scallops are a different matter entirely. Callon describes, in careful detail, whether scallop larvae anchor themselves to the collector lines the researchers have laid down in imitation of a Japanese cultivation technique, and the larvae's behaviour, whatever it turns out to be, is not a response to the researchers' interests, hopes, or rhetorical skill. It is the outcome of the larvae's own nonrecursive biology, indifferent to the fact that a research programme depends on it. Callon calls this indifference resistance, and calls the larvae's eventual, insufficient rate of attachment a betrayal, language that imports interrecursive vocabulary, resistance and betrayal both presuppose a party capable of responding differently to different treatment, onto a process that is nonrecursive from beginning to end.
What Callon has actually documented, read this way, is the biologists using the scallops' fixed, non-negotiable biology as an obligatory passage point precisely because it is fixed and non-negotiable, rather than the scallops joining a negotiation as a fourth party alongside the fishermen, the scientific community, and the biologists. This is what makes the larvae usable as evidence at all. If the scallops had been capable of responding to the researchers' interests, adjusting their attachment behaviour according to how badly a given outcome was wanted, their eventual failure to attach would have proven nothing, since evidence that answers back to the desires of whoever is collecting it is not evidence, it is negotiation. The scientific weight the scallops' behaviour carries in Callon's own account, weight sufficient to end a research programme regardless of how many fishermen and funding bodies had been enrolled, depends entirely on the larvae's nonrecursivity. Callon is describing the scallops functioning as ground, not as a partner, and the paper's continued influence rests on a vocabulary that quietly converts the one into the other.
The same distinction resolves Callon's four moments of translation without remainder. Problematisation, the researchers positioning themselves as an obligatory passage point, and enrolment, the negotiations by which fishermen and colleagues accept the roles assigned to them, are interrecursive from end to end, since every move by any party reshapes the space of possible next moves for everyone else. The scallops never participate in this loop. Their contribution is a single, nonrecursive fact, delivered once, that the interrecursive negotiation among the human parties either survives or does not. Calling this fact resistance, and calling the biologists' response to it a further round of translation, obscures the very asymmetry that makes the case scientifically interesting in the first place: an interrecursive project standing or falling on a nonrecursive counterpart it cannot negotiate with.
IV. The Quasi-Object and the Ball That Does Not Dictate
Michel Serres's account of the rugby ball, adopted wholesale by Latour as the philosophical ancestor of the actant, is the case in which ANT comes closest to the correct analysis and swerves away from it at the decisive moment. Serres's central claim, that a ball sitting on the grass is a mere physical thing while a ball in play becomes something that organises the players around itself, is exactly right, and exactly what nonrecursive coordination theory would predict. Thirty running, shouting, mutually responsive bodies, an interrecursive coordination of extraordinary complexity, has no fixed point to organise around unless something in the middle of it holds still according to rules nobody in the game is negotiating moment to moment. The ball obeys the physics of leather, air, and gravity with total indifference to which team wants it and which player is exhausted, and it is this indifference, not any responsiveness, that lets the interrecursive coordination of the match cohere around it rather than dissolving into thirty separate improvisations.
Serres himself supplies the sentence that gives this away, in noting that social bonds sustained by contract alone would be as insubstantial as cloud, and that an object of the kind specific to human collective life is what actually holds relationships together. Stated directly in this theory's own terms: interrecursive coordination alone, with no nonrecursive counterpart to organise around, has no stable point of reference, since each party is only ever responding to the other's last response, and the whole exchange can drift without limit. A nonrecursive counterpart supplies exactly what interrecursive coordination cannot supply for itself, a point that does not move because of how anyone responds to it, and it is this stability, not any activity on the object's part, that allows a coordination among many mutually responsive parties to hold a shared shape at all.
The swerve comes in the description of what the ball then does. Serres writes that playing is nothing other than making oneself an attribute of the ball, and that the rules are written for the ball and bend the players to it, language that puts the ball in the position of an authority the players submit to, a formulation Latour later generalises into the claim that the ball dictates the players' movement. But a ball that dictated in any sense connected to the interrecursive vocabulary that word invokes would need to respond differently to different players, favouring one team, punishing a mistimed pass, adjusting its bounce to the state of the match, and a ball that did any of this would not organise a game. It would end one, since a nonrecursive counterpart that started answering back would no longer supply the fixed point interrecursive coordination depends on. The ball's entire capacity to structure the match is purchased by its refusal to dictate anything, its perfect indifference to who is winning, who is tired, and who wants it most. What the players submit to is not the ball's agency. It is the ball's nonrecursivity, mistaken, at the exact moment Serres and Latour reach for a verb, for the opposite of what it is.
V. Immutable Mobiles: A Name That Already Gives Away the Mechanism
Latour's concept of the immutable mobile, a map, a ledger, a standardised measurement, capable of travelling across space and time while holding its internal structure constant, is the clearest instance in the whole ANT corpus of a phenomenon correctly identified and then wrongly named, because the concept's own defining word, immutable, already states the mechanism this article has been describing throughout, and states it in terms that have nothing to do with agency at all.
An immutable mobile is powerful, on Latour's own account, precisely because a distant centre of calculation can accumulate inscriptions from a periphery, combine them, and issue instructions back, at a scale and over distances no direct, face-to-face, interrecursive negotiation could sustain. A colonial map allows a metropolitan office to govern a territory its officials have never set foot in. This is real, well documented, and exactly the kind of coordinative power a theory of things needs to explain. What explains it is that the map is a recursive deposit, a nonrecursive counterpart carrying the settled product of coordination, surveying, measurement, cartographic convention, that was once selfrecursive and interrecursive and has since been converted into a form that holds still regardless of who consults it, when, or with what interest, rather than any portion of agency the map has been granted. The map's usefulness to a distant office is a direct function of its refusal to answer back to that office's wishes, exactly as the scallops' usefulness as evidence was a direct function of their refusal to answer back to the biologists' hopes. Call this immutability agency and the concept stops explaining anything, because agency, in every sense the word carries outside ANT's own vocabulary, names responsiveness, and immutability names its absence.
The same point applies with equal force to black-boxing, which Latour treats as closely related to the immutable mobile and which this article's next section takes up directly, and to the broader category of inscription devices, the spectrophotometer, the centrifuge, the apparatus that converts biological substance into a stable, two-dimensional trace. What these devices do, described without the actant vocabulary, is convert a selfrecursive or interrecursive process, an organism's ongoing biochemical activity, a laboratory dispute over what a result means, into a nonrecursive deposit, a reading, a chart, a number, that can then be coordinated with by anyone, nonrecursively, without needing to repeat the process that produced it. The device, far from an active participant alongside the scientists who built and calibrated it, is the site where their selfrecursive and interrecursive labour has already been spent, deposited, and closed off, freeing the scientists' own coordination to move on to the next dispute rather than reproducing the last one from nothing.
VI. Black-Boxing: ANT's Own Word for L1
Black-boxing is the moment a technology's internal complexity becomes invisible because it simply works, and Latour's own description of this moment, a computer, a car engine, or a legal institution stabilised to the point of acting as a single, unified thing, is a precise, unattributed description of L1 in this theory's own vocabulary: coordination that has settled into ease, its history of strain, negotiation, and repair no longer visible or required, available now without anyone having to think about it. Latour is not wrong that this is what black-boxing is. He is wrong about what follows from it.
The entire point of a successful black box, on ANT's own account, is that the network inside it no longer has to be renegotiated on each occasion of use. A driver turning a car key is not entering into interrecursive negotiation with the engine, the fuel injection system, or the alternator. She is coordinating nonrecursively with a deposit, one whose internal history of design disputes, engineering trade-offs, and regulatory negotiation has been converted into a form that starts the car the same way every time, for anyone, regardless of who they are or what they want. This is precisely why Latour's own metaphor works: a box that had to be persuaded, negotiated with, or petitioned on each occasion would not be black, it would be visibly, continuously open, its complexity on permanent display rather than hidden behind a single reliable function.
Calling the black box an actant with agency inverts the relationship between the phenomenon and its explanation. The black box has agency, in ANT's diminished sense of making a difference, in exact proportion to how successfully it has ceased to be negotiable, which is to say in exact proportion to how completely its nonrecursivity has been achieved. A partially black-boxed technology, one still prone to controversy, breakdown, or dispute about its meaning, is closer to the interrecursive negotiation ANT wants to call agency and further from the smooth, unremarkable function black-boxing is named for. The theory has, without noticing, built its central metaphor for technological power out of the same mechanism this article has been tracing throughout, and then reached for exactly the wrong word to describe what makes that mechanism work.
What happens when a black box breaks confirms the diagnosis rather than complicating it. Latour and the wider controversy-studies tradition treat a technology's failure, a bridge collapsing, a diagnosis proving wrong, a computer crashing, as the moment the network inside the box becomes visible again, its heterogeneous elements exposed to renewed dispute. This theory has a name for the same moment that requires no appeal to the box's own agency: strain registering at L2, a coordination that had settled into nonrecursive ease suddenly demanding, once again, the selfrecursive and interrecursive labour of diagnosis and repair. The box has not woken up and started acting. It has simply stopped succeeding at the one thing that made it a box, holding still under engagement, and the humans around it are once more doing what humans do when a deposit fails: naming the fault, negotiating a fix, and depositing the result back into a form that will, if the repair succeeds, disappear from attention exactly as reliably as the box did the first time.
VII. Translation as Remediation, Misdescribed
Callon's four moments, problematisation, interessement, enrolment, and mobilisation, describe, with real precision, how an interrecursive coordination among researchers, fishermen, and a scientific community moves from felt difficulty to stabilised, portable outcome, and the sequence maps onto this theory's own levels of remediation closely enough that making the mapping explicit shows exactly where ANT's vocabulary and this theory's vocabulary are describing the same events and where they diverge.
Problematisation, a researcher naming a problem and positioning a project as the obligatory route through which it must be addressed, is L3 in this theory's terms: a felt difficulty, registered but not yet actionable, given a name specific enough to organise a response around. Interessement, the effort to lock other parties into the roles a problematisation has defined, is the early labour of L4, building a stabilised, shareable account of the situation robust enough that other parties can be enrolled into it rather than each having to discover the problem afresh. Enrolment, the negotiations and trials of strength through which parties accept these roles, is interrecursive coordination in its most visible and effortful form, the costly, continuously renegotiated work this theory has elsewhere identified as exactly what nonrecursive deposits exist to spare a population from repeating indefinitely. Mobilisation, the point at which a spokesperson represents a now-stabilised network, including its non-human members, as a unified force, is the arrival at L4 proper, a portable, durable account that can travel to funding bodies, journals, and future collaborators without requiring each of them to relive the original negotiation.
What this mapping makes visible is that the entire sequence, from problematisation to mobilisation, describes only the selfrecursive and interrecursive labour of the human parties involved. The scallops, present throughout as the ostensible fourth party to the negotiation, never move through any of these levels. They do not register strain, name a problem, accept a role, or become a spokesperson for anything. They remain exactly what they were before the biologists arrived, a population of larvae behaving according to their own nonrecursive biology, and what changes across the four moments is entirely the human parties' account of that biology, an account that itself moves, level by level, from a raw disturbance in a research director's plans to a portable, published, defensible finding. Translation, examined this way, is this theory's own remediation architecture, correctly observed in the field and then narrated as though every participant in it were undergoing the same kind of movement, when only some of them, the ones capable of registering strain and naming it, ever were.
VIII. The Four Meanings of Non-Human Agency, Corrected
Edwin Sayes's influential synthesis of Latour's scattered claims into four distinct roles, condition for society, mediator, moral and political member, and gathering, offers an unusually clean target, because each role can be tested directly against the apparatus this article has built, and each one turns out to name something real that the word agency actively obscures.
A wall, a legal document, and a paved road are offered as conditions for society, objects providing the durability human interaction alone cannot sustain. This is exactly the function of a recursive deposit, and this theory names the mechanism the ANT taxonomy leaves as a bare description: these objects provide durability because they are nonrecursive, categorically and without exception, and it is this categorical fact, not a diminished or specialised form of agency, that lets selfrecursive and interrecursive coordination be spared the cost of continuous renegotiation. A wall that had agency in any sense connected to responsiveness would be a poor condition for society, since a boundary that could be argued out of its position on a given day would settle nothing.
A speed bump offered as a mediator, translating an abstract speed limit into a physical jolt, is the role where ANT's vocabulary comes closest to naming something and furthest from naming it correctly. The bump is, rather, a fixed physical obstacle that produces the same jolt for every vehicle that crosses it at a given speed, regardless of the driver's intentions, translating nothing in any sense connected to interpretation, distortion, or choice, all of which presuppose a party capable of responding differently on different occasions. The actual translation, from an abstract legal limit into a concrete deterrent, happened once, in the selfrecursive and interrecursive labour of the traffic engineers who calculated its height and the officials who approved its installation. The bump is where that finished translation was deposited, not where translation continues to occur.
A seatbelt offered as a moral and political member, inscribing a norm of safety into a car's design, exhibits the same displacement. The moral weight belongs entirely to the interrecursive negotiation among engineers, regulators, and safety advocates that produced the design, negotiation this theory would place, level by level, from felt public concern through named legislative proposal to codified regulation. The seatbelt is the sedimented result of that negotiation, available now for nonrecursive use by anyone who buckles it, and calling the belt itself a moral member of the assemblage mistakes the deposit for the depositors, in precisely the way calling a law's text a moral agent would mistake a statute for the legislature that wrote it.
A computer offered as a gathering, drawing miners, engineers, and users across different times and places into a single point of action, names something real and useful, and this theory has a precise account of why gathering of this kind requires the gathered counterpart to be nonrecursive rather than despite it. A device capable of gathering many different selfrecursive and interrecursive projects onto itself at once, a miner's decades-old labour, an engineer's design decisions, a present user's immediate purpose, can only do so by remaining indifferent to all of them equally, holding still under every one of these very different kinds of attention rather than favouring one over another. A gathering point with agenda or agency of its own would not gather. It would take sides.
IX. The Body Multiple: Deposits, Not Ontologies
Annemarie Mol's ethnography of atherosclerosis in a Dutch hospital, tracking how the disease appears as a patient's complaint of leg pain in the consulting room, a calcified artery under the pathologist's microscope, a shadow on the radiologist's angiogram, and a blockage in the surgeon's operating field, is offered as evidence that the disease is not one object seen from different angles but several different objects, enacted differently by different practices, with reality itself rendered plural rather than singular. The ethnography is exact and the departments' incompatible enactments are real. The ontological conclusion drawn from them is not required by the evidence, and this theory's account of deposition explains the same material more precisely without it.
Each department Mol describes is coordinating, through a different mediation, with the same underlying nonrecursive biological process, an artery narrowing according to its own biochemistry regardless of who is examining it or how. The consulting room's coordination is largely embodied, the patient's own selfrecursive experience of pain and restricted walking distance, reported through speech to a listening clinician. The pathology laboratory's coordination is multimaterial, a tissue sample prepared and mounted according to a fixed technical procedure. The radiology department's coordination is multisymbolic, an image produced by an apparatus and read according to trained convention. The surgical suite's coordination combines multimateriality and embodiment directly, a blockage located, handled, and altered. Four different mediations, foregrounded in four different departments, each producing a different kind of deposit, a complaint, a slide, an image, a surgical finding, from their encounter with one process that does not itself change depending on which department is attending to it.
This is exactly the situation this theory's own method of deposit analysis is built to diagnose, since every deposition selects one aspect of what it deposits and discards the rest, and different departments, deposing different aspects through different mediations, produce deposits that properly do not reduce to one another, without this requiring that the underlying process split into several realities to accommodate them. The pathology slide and the angiogram are not incompatible enactments of atherosclerosis in the sense of naming different diseases. They are different, non-interchangeable selections from one nonrecursive biological process, each selection shaped by the mediation through which it was made, and the coordination problem Mol correctly identifies, how a hospital decides which department's account should govern treatment, is a real and difficult problem of aspect-selection and institutional authority, not evidence that the artery itself does not exist as one process prior to any department's attention to it. Mol's own insistence that the different enactments interfere with, rather than simply coexist alongside, one another is better explained by this theory's account of misselection, a deposit built around the wrong aspect of a stake continuing to generate friction against deposits built around other aspects of the same stake, than by an ontology in which the disease has no unified existence to be interfered with in the first place.
X. Topologies of Alterity: Law's Near Miss
John Law's later work, distinguishing Euclidean space, network space, fluid space, and the still more volatile spaces he gestures toward with the metaphors of fire and cloud, is the closest ANT comes to independently rediscovering the stability axis this theory has used throughout, arrived at from an almost opposite direction and stopped just short of completion.
Law's Euclidean space, the space of fixed coordinates, property lines, and national borders, and his network space, in which distance is measured by the strength and maintenance of relations rather than physical proximity, both describe regions of high, achieved stability, counterparts whose position, once established, holds regardless of who subsequently attends to them, which is why an immutable mobile can cross Euclidean space without losing its network-space integrity: its nonrecursivity is exactly what survives the crossing. Law's fluid space, objects such as a river, a practice, or a living organism that maintain identity through continuous, gradual transformation rather than fixed boundaries, describes something closer to selfrecursive coordination, a counterpart that does respond, on its own timescale, to how it continues, without ever losing enough continuity to become unrecognisable. And the volatile spaces Law reaches for with fire and cloud, objects with no stable identity at all, flaring and dissolving, gesture toward the fastest end of exactly the stability gradient this theory's companion articles have traced through embodiment and dwelling, mood, weather, the felt state of an interrecursive relationship on the point of collapse.
Law's contribution, read this way, is a real and independently arrived-at observation that objects are not all stable in the same way or to the same degree, and that a theory of things needs a vocabulary for their differing rates of change rather than a single, undifferentiated category of actant. What Law's topology lacks, and what leaves it unable to complete the move it gestures toward, is the categorical distinction underneath the gradient: his fluid objects and his fire objects are still, on his own account, objects with some form of agency and effect, rather than counterparts whose type, recursive or nonrecursive, is settled independently of how quickly they happen to change. Law comes within reach of the stability axis this article has used throughout and stops just short of separating it from the question of agency his wider ANT commitments will not let him abandon.
The missing piece is maintenance load, the ongoing selfrecursive and interrecursive labour a nonrecursive counterpart requires to remain available for nonrecursive coordination at all. An immutable mobile does not simply possess stability as an inherent property, the way Law's Euclidean and network spaces sometimes suggest. It is stable because someone keeps recopying the manuscript, recalibrating the instrument, or reprinting the map before the previous copy degrades past legibility, and a map left unmaintained does not become fluid or agentive in Law's sense. It becomes an ordinary deposit failing through neglect, its nonrecursivity entirely intact and its usefulness gone. Law's fire and cloud, similarly, are not objects behaving with a wilder, more volatile species of agency than the ones that hold still. They are counterparts whose maintenance load is so high, or whose underlying process changes so quickly on its own terms, that no deposit built from them could be kept current for long, which is a fact about upkeep and rate of change rather than about how much agency an object happens to have been allotted.
XI. Why Symmetry Is an Explanatory Regression
The principle of generalised symmetry, treating human and non-human actants with the same conceptual vocabulary, is presented, across the whole ANT literature, as the theory's most radical achievement, a refusal to let humanist prejudice decide in advance which entities are permitted to matter. Examined against the apparatus this article has built, symmetry is the deliberate erasure of the single distinction that would let a theory of things explain why things are worth manufacturing at all, rather than a radical advance in explanatory power.
selfrecursive and interrecursive coordination is costly in a specific and measurable sense: both require continuous, effortful attention, cannot be banked or repeated identically, and draw on a capacity that is not unlimited. nonrecursive coordination is comparatively costless to repeat once established, which is precisely why civilisations manufacture roads, ledgers, laws, and machines at all, converting expensive, effortful coordination into cheap, repeatable coordination and thereby freeing the expensive kind for what only living beings coordinating with other living beings can actually do. A theory that calls both kinds of coordination by the same name, agency, symmetrically distributed across humans and non-humans, has no way of stating this economy, because it has denied itself the distinction the economy depends on. If a speed bump already possesses agency of its own, converting an engineer's interrecursive negotiation into a bump's nonrecursive physical presence buys nothing that was not already available, and ANT's own richest material, the case after case of researchers, engineers, and institutions labouring specifically to convert recursive coordination into durable, unresponsive form, becomes unintelligible as a project rather than illuminated as one.
Symmetry also cannot explain its own political self-image. ANT has always presented the refusal to privilege human actors as an act of intellectual humility, a levelling of hierarchies the humanist tradition wrongly imposed. But levelling the vocabulary that describes a scallop and the vocabulary that describes a scientist does not level anything about their actual roles in Callon's story, where the scientists move through problematisation, interessement, enrolment, and mobilisation while the scallops remain exactly what they were at the outset, a fixed biological fact the scientists' project either survives or does not. Calling this arrangement symmetrical only makes the asymmetry harder to see, which is a cost dressed up as a discovery.
XII. The Critiques ANT Could Not Answer, Reread
ANT has never lacked capable critics, and each of the major objections, examined through this theory's apparatus, turns out to be reaching for exactly the distinction ANT's own vocabulary forbids it from making.
David Bloor's objection that non-humans exercise causal effect without intentional, purposive agency, and that using the same word for both obscures an important difference, is correct as far as it goes and does not go far enough, because it treats the difference as one of degree, causal agency as a lesser cousin of full, intentional agency, when the distinction this theory supplies is categorical rather than graded. A speed bump possesses none of what a driver possesses, in the strict sense that it does not respond to how it is engaged with at all, rather than a diminished, partial, or attenuated form of it, and no amount of causal consequence changes this, since consequence and responsiveness are entirely independent properties.
Sandra Harding's objection that ANT's flat ontology cannot identify or critique structures of domination, since treating all actants symmetrically makes capital, patriarchy, and colonialism appear as networks no more significant than any other, receives a precise mechanism from this theory rather than remaining a general political worry. Power, on this account, consists substantially in the capacity to convert one's own selfrecursive and interrecursive preferences into durable, nonrecursive deposits that other people must then simply coordinate with, a road that channels movement, a law that forecloses certain claims before they can be argued, a classification that decides in advance what will count as evidence. This is an asymmetry between depositors and inheritors of deposits, precisely the asymmetry ANT's insistence on calling the deposit itself an agent, symmetrical with the humans who made it, is structurally unable to register. Harding is right that the symmetry principle has conservative effects. This theory explains why: it makes the depositing invisible by attributing the deposit's power to the deposit rather than to whoever did the depositing.
The scale problem, ANT's difficulty accounting for durable structures, capitalism, the state, climate change, that are not traceable to any single network, follows from the same gap. This theory's account of sedimentation, deposits accumulating across generations until their origins become obscured and inherited anchors, rather than any traceable network, become the medium through which a population coordinates with its own past, explains directly why some structures outrun ANT's method of following the actors: they are not one network large enough to trace, but layers of deposit laid down by many now-unconnected episodes of coordination, each one closed off and nonrecursive with respect to everything that came after it. A method built to trace live, ongoing negotiation has no natural purchase on a structure whose defining feature is that the negotiation which produced it is long finished.
XIII. Object-Oriented Ontology and New Materialism: Missing in Opposite Directions
Graham Harman's Object-Oriented Ontology and the New Materialism associated with Jane Bennett and Karen Barad both sense, correctly, that ANT's pure relationism cannot be the whole story, and both correct it by moving in opposite directions, neither of which arrives at the distinction this article has been developing.
Harman argues that ANT exhausts an object in its relations, either undermining it into components or overmining it into effects, and proposes instead that objects possess a withdrawn, inaccessible real core that no relation, however thorough, ever fully captures. This diagnosis of ANT's relationism is largely correct: a purely relational ontology does struggle to explain why an object retains any stable identity between one network and the next. But the remedy mystifies a fact that requires no mystery. A nonrecursive counterpart's stability across different occasions of engagement is the direct, fully specifiable, entirely unmysterious consequence of the counterpart's categorical failure to respond to how it is engaged with, in this occasion or any other, rather than evidence of a hidden metaphysical reservoir withdrawn from all access. There is no need to posit an inaccessible real gun behind the gun that a body and a trigger jointly constitute. There is only a nonrecursive counterpart, indifferent to which body is holding it, and a great deal of selfrecursive and interrecursive coordination, on the part of whoever picks it up, that its indifference makes possible.
Bennett's vibrant matter and Barad's agential realism move the opposite way, dissolving the object entirely into process, vitality, or intra-action, entities that do not precede their relations but are constituted by them in each encounter. Bennett's account of a power grid failure, agency distributed across wires, weather, and regulatory decisions with no single actor responsible, correctly resists locating the whole event in any one human decision, and Barad's insistence that a measuring apparatus helps constitute rather than merely reveal the boundaries of what it measures correctly captures the sense in which a deposit's selected aspect shapes what becomes visible about its object. But both then attribute to matter itself a vitality or ontological indeterminacy that the phenomena do not require. A deposit's vulnerability to decay, its dependence on continuous maintenance to remain a stable counterpart at all, an unmaintained wire, an uncalibrated apparatus, is a fact about maintenance load, the ongoing selfrecursive and interrecursive labour that keeps a nonrecursive counterpart available for nonrecursive coordination, not evidence that the counterpart possesses its own vital agency or that its boundaries are perpetually up for renegotiation with reality itself. Harman gives objects too much interior life. Bennett and Barad give them too little exterior stability. Both errors are more comprehensible, and more correctable, once the actual axis, categorical recursivity type, crossed with the actual gradient, rate of change and maintenance load, is back in view.
XIV. What Things Actually Do
The positive claim this article has been assembling case by case can now be stated directly. Things carry the coordinative weight ANT has always documented them carrying, holding networks together across distance, stabilising social bonds, gathering distributed projects into a single point of action, functioning as obligatory passage points and durable conditions for collective life, not because they have been quietly readmitted to the category of agents after all, but because they have been excluded from it categorically and without exception. A scallop larva's indifference to a research programme's hopes is what makes its behaviour usable as evidence. A ball's indifference to who is winning is what lets thirty players organise a game around it. A map's indifference to the interests of whoever consults it is what lets a distant office govern a territory through it. A black box's freedom from renegotiation is what lets a driver start a car without first persuading it. In every one of these cases, the thing's usefulness to coordination is purchased by exactly the property ANT calls agency and this theory calls its precise opposite.
None of this diminishes what things do. It relocates the explanation of what things do from a borrowed and diminished version of human agency to a mechanism proper to things themselves: nonrecursive coordination, cheap to repeat, indifferent to whoever engages it, and for exactly this reason capable of carrying selfrecursive and interrecursive achievement across distances and durations no living coordination could sustain on its own. What things build, on this account, is an accumulating stock that does not answer back, manufactured precisely so that the beings who do answer back, to their own bodies and to one another, are not required to spend their entire recursive capacity renegotiating a world that a road, a ledger, or a law could simply be trusted to hold still.
XV. Conclusion: The Parliament That Was Never Needed
Actor-Network Theory's diagnosis of the modern settlement, the untenable pretence that nature and culture, object and subject, could be kept in permanently separate zones while hybrids of exactly this kind were manufactured continuously and relied upon everywhere, is correct, valuable, and not disputed by anything in this article. Latour's hybrids are real. The purification he describes as modernity's official self-image while translation did the actual work underneath it is an accurate description of how ozone holes, financial instruments, and genetically modified organisms came to exist in the shape they have. What is wrong is not the observation that things and people are inseparably entangled in the production of the collective world. What is wrong is the single word chosen to name the things' contribution to that entanglement.
Latour proposes a Parliament of Things, a forum in which the interests of non-human actants must be represented alongside human ones, because if things have agency, their exclusion from political representation is an injustice waiting to be corrected. The apparatus this article has built suggests the parliament was never the right image, not because things do not matter to politics, but because their contribution to political and social life is not of the kind a parliament exists to manage. A parliament represents parties capable of having interests responded to, interests that shift, that can be negotiated, persuaded, or overridden, in a word, interests that are interrecursive. A nonrecursive counterpart has no interests of this kind to represent, and its political significance lies exactly where this article has located it throughout, in the question of who gets to convert their own coordination into the durable, unresponsive ground that everyone else must subsequently live inside, a question about power, sedimentation, and the asymmetry between depositors and inheritors, and not a question about extending suffrage to scallops. Heidegger, whom ANT quotes selectively and then abandons at the crucial juncture, had already supplied half the answer in his account of the hammer that withdraws from attention precisely by working, ready-to-hand rather than present-at-hand, functioning by virtue of not standing out as an object at all. ANT borrowed this insight and then insisted, against its own best evidence, that the withdrawal was itself a form of action, when it was ground, and the whole of civilisation, this theory's companion articles have argued at length, is what living beings have built by learning to manufacture more of it.
Part IV. “A Very Pretty Home”: Time, Memory, and the Continuous Transformation of Life into Nonrecursive Traces
Abstract
An old house reveals how human beings continually convert recursive life—responsive, effortful, and open—into nonrecursive traces that no longer answer back. Through ordinary inhabitation, past repairs, negotiations, and care disappear into a stable background that asks nothing of the present. Time itself performs this conversion most radically, closing every episode the instant it ends. Memory only delays the process; death completes it. Material forms survive while meaning and experience vanish. Humans require such nonrecursive ground precisely because their interrecursive capacities are so extensive. Human life, seen through the house, is intergenerational custodianship of these deposits: receiving a functioning world, adding present labour, and passing it on so that future lives may unfold unnoticed upon it.
I. Habitual Inhabitation
I wake up at 4:30am, on the first floor of the house. It is summer, the room has held its temperature through the night. The roof has kept off whatever fell while I slept. I get out of bed, the floor takes my weight without complaint, the same way it did the morning before and the morning before that. I go down to the kitchen, the stairs carry me, the kettle is where I left it the evening before. Cold water runs from the tap, and I do not stop and wonder if it is safe to drink, as I would while living in India. I make coffee, with beans that found their way somehow from Java to my cupboard. I start to write before anyone else is awake. I might welcome someone later that day or retreat to my study. By the time the morning is over I will have crossed most thresholds in the building and asked almost nothing of any of them.
Almost none of this involves focused thinking about my house. It's there for me and lets me get on with what I am doing. I do stop myself at least once a day to be grateful for a moment or experience. How the light shines some summer evenings through one of the north-facing windows. How the baby plum tree in the garden has grown so fast. How one of the original wooden shutters still works. That is the whole of what needs to be said about it, and it is also the strangest thing that can be said about anything. The walls do not require my attention to remain walls. The roof does not need to be reassured that it will hold. The stairs do not have to be persuaded, each time, to carry me rather than let me fall. The plumbing runs beneath the floors in total silence, asking to be thought about only in the rare week when it fails. The windows keep the weather on its own side of the glass. The garden outside marks the turning of the seasons without anyone directing it to. Live in a house long enough and it does something no other kind of object quite manages. It disappears.
This is a properly strange achievement, and strange achievements deserve a better explanation than the one usually given. The obvious answer is that the house is well built, and no doubt it helps that it is. But building quality is not what explains the disappearance, and a moment's thought shows why. A well-built house that nobody had ever lived in, a show home, a museum reconstruction, does not disappear in this way. It remains visible, remarked upon, looked at. What makes a lived-in house vanish is not its construction. It is something that has happened to an almost unthinkable quantity of past activity, activity that once required exactly the kind of attention this house no longer asks for, and that has since been converted into something that asks for nothing at all.
The claim of this article is that this conversion is not incidental to how houses work. It is the central mechanism by which anything human comes to feel stable, and the house is simply the place where it can be watched happening in the clearest possible light. An immense amount of activity that was once uncertain, effortful, and dependent on the responsiveness of living people to one another has already become something that does not respond to anything at all, and it is precisely because it no longer responds that it can now be lived on top of without a second thought.
The question this article asks is accordingly not architectural. It is this. How does the effortful, responsive, ongoing business of living become the settled, unresponsive background within which a later and different kind of living becomes possible? There is a name, drawn from a vocabulary this article will introduce only as it is needed, for activity that goes on responding, to itself or to others, for as long as it continues. Such activity is recursive. And this house, however ordinary it feels this morning, is one of the clearest demonstrations available anywhere of what human beings do with recursive life once they have had enough of it. They turn it, with extraordinary and largely unnoticed labour, into something that does not recur.
II. Living at L1 Is Never Passive
There are weeks in summer when nothing seems to happen to the house at all, and these are usually the weeks in which the most is quietly at stake. The lawn goes several weeks without rain and begins to yellow, and I do not think of this as an event, only as weather, until the day the rain finally comes and a stain spreads across the ceiling of the back bedroom that was not there before. A leak that has been developing for months, held in check by dryness, announces itself the moment the conditions change. Paint that has been slowly failing on a north-facing sill for two summers finally begins to flake in earnest. A door that has closed without comment for a decade develops a loose hinge, seemingly overnight, though of course it is not overnight at all. A boiler that has been quietly ageing since before I owned the house eventually, and with no warning that means anything until it is too late to act on, stops.
None of these events are surprises in the sense of being unrelated to what came before. Each is the visible conclusion of a process that had been running the whole time, unfelt, beneath the level at which anything asked for my attention. This is the first thing living in an old house teaches, more reliably than any book could. The state in which a house asks nothing of me is not a state of nothing happening. It has to be called something else, because nothing truly inert could keep out weather, hold a door in position for a decade, or produce hot water on demand for years without complaint. Call it L1, for want of a better term, and treat it as what it actually is: the visible face of an enormous accumulation of past success.
A house that has stood for a long time and asks little of its occupants is not a house that has escaped disturbance. It is a house in which an extraordinary number of past disturbances have already been resolved, by people who are mostly no longer present to be thanked for it, so completely that their resolutions no longer look like achievements at all. They look like nothing, which is exactly the disguise a successful repair wears once enough time has passed. Living in such a house means moving continually between this invisible state and its opposite: the moment a stain appears on a ceiling, or a hinge begins to catch, or a familiar hum from the boiler changes pitch in a way I cannot quite place, and something that had been asking for nothing suddenly, and often without much warning, asks for everything. Call that second state L2, the point at which a disturbance that has actually been building for a long time finally becomes something I can no longer fail to notice.
The lesson worth taking from this, before the argument goes any further, is that L1 is never merely the absence of L2. It is not a default state that a house occupies until something goes wrong. It is a standing achievement, continuously maintained by labour that has mostly already happened, and every quiet morning in an old house is evidence not of a lack of history but of an enormous amount of it, successfully concluded and now carried without complaint by walls, pipes, hinges, and roofs that do not know, and do not need to know, what they are carrying.
III. Walking Through the Five Mediations
When I walk through the house properly, room by room, paying attention rather than merely passing through, something becomes visible that no amount of describing the house in the abstract would show as clearly.
I start in the kitchen. The kettle is warm in my hand before I have thought about warmth at all; the tiled floor is cold under bare feet in a way that changes how I stand, how long I linger, whether I reach for slippers without deciding to. This is my body doing what bodies do, coordinating with temperature, texture, and effort before any of it becomes a thought, and the theory that concerns this article has a name for the whole of that coordination: embodiment. But the kitchen is rarely only about my own body. It is where the household actually happens, where whoever else is in the house drifts through on their own schedule, where a meal for six people is a different kind of room than a meal for one, where a neighbour who has let herself in without knocking changes the temperature of the space before she has said a word. Call that being-with, the dimension along which the presence, absence, and anticipated arrival of others organises what a room is for.
I go through to the study and the balance shifts. The books on the shelves, the papers on the desk, the manuscript that has been open on the screen for three days, none of this is here for its own sake. All of it is symbolic material, doing the specific work of making thought portable, revisable, and shareable with people who are not in the room. Call this multisymbolization, and notice what has not happened. My body is still coordinating with the chair, the desk height, the particular slant of afternoon light that tells me, without my checking a clock, roughly what time it is. The room is still oriented to the garden outside its window, still catching the last of the sun in a way the kitchen does not. What has changed is not which mediations are present. All five are present in the study exactly as fully as they were in the kitchen. What has changed is only which of them I happen to be attending to.
The staircase, which I cross a dozen times a day without registering it as a place at all, is where the sheer materiality of the house is most exposed: worn treads, a banister polished smooth by decades of hands that were not mine, a turn in the stairwell that has been negotiated by every body that has ever lived here. This is multimateriality doing what it does best, holding a form that generations of embodied movement have shaped without anyone having designed it to be shaped.
The bedrooms return the emphasis to embodiment more directly than anywhere else in the house, to sleep, to rest, to the particular cold of a north-facing room in February that no amount of architecture entirely solves. And they carry dwelling with unusual clarity too, since a bedroom's relationship to the rising sun, to the direction the wind comes from, to the particular quality of a winter morning, is rarely disguised by anything else competing for attention.
The attic, when I finally go up there, holds a different kind of symbolisation again: boxes of photographs nobody has looked at in years, a child's drawings kept for reasons nobody could now fully explain, the accumulated symbolic residue of a household that has been going on for longer than any single memory can hold. It also holds the bones of the roof itself, beams and rafters that are pure multimateriality, doing their structural work in the dark, unlit and unvisited for months at a time.
And the garden, finally, is where dwelling becomes almost impossible to ignore: the particular way this piece of ground catches the light, the birds that return to the same corner every spring, the rain the house was built to shed and the garden was built to receive. It is also, on a summer evening with guests seated at the table under the tree, one of the most concentrated sites of being-with the whole property offers.
It would be easy to read this tour as a movement, as though the kitchen were the room of embodiment and the study the room of symbols and the garden the room of dwelling, each mediation handed off to the next room like a baton. That is not what has happened, and it matters that it is not. All five mediations, embodiment, being-with, multiversal dwelling, multimateriality, and multisymbolization, are present in every room of the house, without exception, in exactly the way they are present in every moment of a life. There is no room in which I have stopped dwelling, no room in which the material fabric of the walls has ceased to matter, no room, however solitary, in which the fact of other people, present or absent, expected or unlikely, has stopped organising what the room is for. What the tour actually shows is not mediations coming and going. It is salience shifting: the same five dimensions, always all in play, becoming more or less foregrounded as what I am doing in a given room changes. This is not a peculiarity of houses. It is what every human situation already is, and the house is simply patient enough, and quiet enough, to let me notice it happening.
IV. The House as a Machine for Producing L1
Take the ceiling stain from two sections ago and follow it properly. At first it is only a discoloured patch, easy enough to notice and easy enough, for a while, to postpone thinking about. But it does not resolve itself, and eventually it becomes something I cannot walk past without registering: an unmistakable sign, damp to the touch, spreading very slightly each time it rains, that something above it has failed. This is the point at which what was quietly wrong becomes something felt as wrong, the move from the first state described earlier to the second.
The next move is not automatic. Feeling that something is wrong is not the same as knowing what it is, and a good deal of the work of living in an old house consists precisely in that gap. I go up into the loft with a torch. I trace the line of the stain back along the rafters to a point above the chimney breast, where the flashing has lifted very slightly at one corner, just enough to let water track down the inside of the brickwork on wet nights when the wind is from a particular direction. Naming the problem this precisely, this fault in this flashing, is its own kind of achievement, and it is not automatic. A vaguer diagnosis, a general sense that the roof is old and probably needs attention, would send remediation toward the wrong target entirely, toward a full reroofing, say, when what is actually required is an afternoon's work with a roofer and a strip of new lead.
Once the problem has been named this precisely it can be handed to someone else, and this handing-off is itself a further transformation. I describe the fault to a roofer over the phone in terms that mean nothing about my particular relationship to this particular house and everything about flashing, chimney breasts, and lead: terms that would apply identically to a stranger's roof three streets away. I get a quote. I arrange a date. None of this requires the roofer to understand anything about the years I have lived in this house, or what the room beneath that ceiling has meant to anyone who has slept in it. The problem has been converted into a form portable enough to be solved by someone who has never set foot in the building before, which is precisely what makes it solvable at the scale and speed a household actually requires.
And then, on the appointed morning, the work is done. The flashing is replaced. The stain, over the following weeks, dries, and eventually I paint over it, and within a season nobody entering the room would know that anything had ever been wrong. The repair itself disappears, exactly as thoroughly as the fault it corrected. This detail is not incidental to what has happened. The purpose of the entire sequence, from the first faint discolouration to the roofer's van pulling away, was never to produce a repair that would stand as a visible monument to itself. It was to produce, once again, a ceiling that asks nothing of anyone. Successful recursive labour is not labour that leaves a mark. It is labour whose entire ambition is to make itself unnecessary to notice ever again.
This is the house working exactly as a house is supposed to work, and the mechanism is the same one the rest of this article will trace at every larger scale. Something recursive, felt strain, diagnosis, negotiation with someone else's schedule and expertise, is set in motion for the sole purpose of producing something nonrecursive: a ceiling that will not ask to be diagnosed again for another decade. The house is not merely a place where this happens occasionally, when something breaks. It is best understood as a machine, running continuously and almost entirely invisibly, for exactly this purpose: for taking whatever has become disturbed and turning it back into something that does not need to be thought about at all.
V. Time: The Greatest Converter of the Recursive into the Nonrecursive
The roof repair is a small case of something enormous, and the larger version, once seen, is difficult to unsee. The usual account of how human beings produce stability out of activity that is otherwise fluid and responsive points to the things they build: the roads, the archives, the institutions, the written records, all of the deliberate, effortful conversion of recursive labour into objects that hold still. That account is not wrong. But it misses a conversion that requires no deliberate effort whatsoever, that no one builds and no one can prevent, and that is running underneath every one of the deliberate conversions as their constant condition. That conversion is time itself.
Every conversation I have ever had was, while it was happening, fully recursive: open, responsive, undetermined until the moment it ended, capable of turning in a direction neither party had anticipated. The moment it ends, something happens to it that has nothing to do with memory, records, or intention. It becomes fixed. Not fixed in the sense of being remembered accurately, and not fixed in the sense of being merely over and done with, but fixed in the specific sense that matters here: it can no longer be altered by anything that happens afterward. Every meal at that table, every birthday, every argument in the kitchen, every year of a child's growing up, every repair to this house, undergoes exactly the same conversion, and undergoes it constantly, at the same rate the present becomes the past.
The three-part structure this reveals has to be exact, because everything else in this article depends on getting it right. The future, considered as a domain, is recursively open: nothing that will happen in it has yet been settled by anything, and whatever coordination eventually occurs there remains, until it occurs, wholly undetermined. The present is recursively active: it is the only place where responsiveness is actually occurring, where what I do next can still be shaped by what has just happened and can still shape what happens after. And the past is recursively closed, absolutely and without exception, not because it has vanished, and not because no one can any longer be affected by it, but because nothing further can be done to it. It cannot be renegotiated. It cannot respond differently on reflection. It holds exactly the shape it held at the moment it stopped being present, and it will hold that shape regardless of anything that happens to anyone for the rest of time.
This means that time performs, continuously and for free, the same operation that a written record, a legal category, or a repaired roof performs deliberately and at cost. It takes something that was recursive and turns it into something that no longer answers back. Call the result, whatever its content, a deposit, or more precisely a recursive deposit: a form that carries the settled product of what was once an open process and that can no longer participate in that openness. Every deposit this article has discussed so far, the repaired flashing, the worn stair tread, the notebook in the attic, is a deposit made deliberately, in multimaterial or multisymbolic form, by people who worked to make it that way. But the deposit that time itself produces requires no labour and no material at all. It is simply what happens to every recursive episode, everywhere, the instant it concludes. This is the deepest and least remarked conversion process in the whole of civilisation, and it is running, right now, underneath this sentence, converting the moment in which you are reading it into something that will very shortly be unable to answer to anything you do next.
It is tempting to treat this as a loss, and in one sense it plainly is. But that judgement should wait, because the conversion time performs is also the precondition for everything the rest of this article has already described. A house that never stopped being an ongoing negotiation, whose walls remained as responsive and unsettled as the conversation that first decided where they should go, could not be lived in at all. It is only because that negotiation closed, became fixed, stopped answering back, that anyone was able to build on top of it. Time's conversion of the recursive into the nonrecursive is not simply what steals the past away. It is what makes a present, and therefore a future, possible in the first place.
VI. Memory Does Not Preserve the Past
Every room in this house carries memories that have nothing to do with its plumbing or its flashing. The staircase is where my children, when they were small enough to need reminding, learned not to run. The room now used as a study held a Christmas morning, years ago, that I could still describe in enough detail to make someone who was not there feel they had been. There have been arguments in the kitchen that I remember by the exact angle of a chair pushed back too fast, illnesses nursed in the room at the top of the stairs, birthdays, homework arguments, laughter that returns unbidden when the light falls a particular way through a particular window in October.
None of this is stored in the house. Precision matters here, because it is easy to speak loosely as though a house holding memories were something more than a figure of speech, and the looseness hides an important asymmetry. The walls do not remember the Christmas morning. The staircase does not remember my children learning to walk down it carefully. What actually happens is that I, walking through the room, enter into a relationship with my own past that is itself active, interpretive, and ongoing: I reconstruct, I narrate, I feel the specific texture of an occasion that is not simply retrieved but assembled, differently, almost every time I revisit it. This relationship is exactly as recursive as the original occasion was. It responds to my present mood, to who else is in the room, to what has happened to me since. A memory is not a deposit sitting inertly in a drawer, waiting to be taken out unchanged. It is a live, continuing negotiation between a present self and a past that can no longer talk back, and it is this negotiation, not the house, that is doing the remembering.
This is why the asymmetry that eventually confronts every household matters so much. When I die, and whoever else has lived in this house has died, almost none of what has just been described will survive me. The precise angle of that pushed-back chair, the exact quality of that particular Christmas light, the felt weight of a specific illness nursed in a specific room, none of this transfers. It is not written into the fabric of the building, however much the fabric of the building may have been the occasion for it. What will survive, when the recursive relationship that sustained these memories finally ends because the person sustaining it is no longer there to sustain it, is the house itself: the same stairs, the same kitchen, the same window catching the same October light for whoever happens to be standing in front of it next. The rooms remain. The memories do not.
This forces a correction to how memory is usually described, and the correction matters for everything that follows. Memory is not what preserves the recursive life of a household against the passage of time. Nothing preserves it, in the strict sense, because preservation would require that the original responsiveness itself survive, unaltered, available to be reactivated exactly as it was, and nothing does that. What memory actually does is delay the conversion of that recursive life into deposit, for exactly as long as someone remains alive to keep renegotiating it. Humans are, in this narrow but exact sense, continually resisting time: every act of remembering is an attempt to keep an episode recursively alive a little longer, to prevent it from settling fully into the closed, unanswerable past the previous section described. And time, without exception, wins. Not because memory fails through carelessness, but because the living relationship memory depends on cannot outlast the living person who carries it.
The result of this is not simply loss, though it is certainly that. It is also a further instance of the same process this whole article has been tracing. What memory delays, death completes: the final conversion of an entire lifetime of recursive relationship with a house into pure, unresponsive deposit. The staircase my children ran down becomes, for whoever moves in after me, simply a staircase. Nothing about it will announce what it once carried. This is not a special cruelty reserved for houses. It is what happens to every recursive episode that time and mortality eventually touch, which is to say, all of them.
VII. An Older House Than My Own Life
A visitor arrived from California on a summer afternoon in July 1893: John Muir, the conservationist who would go on to lobby for the creation of the United States' national parks, forty years gone from the Dunbar of his birth and returning for the first and only time since his family had emigrated when he was a boy.
Muir had a list of names from his mother, old friends and relations still living in the town, and he worked through it methodically over several days, hiring a pony and trap, calling on schoolmates he was surprised to find so many of still alive, visiting the town's registrar on an unhappy errand concerning his late grandfather's estate. Among the calls was one on his cousin Maggie, who lived with her widowed mother, also called Maggie, in a house half a mile out of town on the road toward Belhaven. He was received, by his own account, with unusual warmth. The two Maggies took him about to all the best places and people, in his own words, and petted him in grand style, and before he left they insisted he make their house his home for the remainder of his stay in Dunbar.
Muir called the house, in one of his letters, “a very pretty home.” He writes of talking family affairs, glaciers, wild gardens, and adventures until after eleven, and of listening for skylarks in the fields behind the house.
I have often wondered which room he stayed in, and how it was arranged the summer he was here. I know, because it was written down, that Muir sat in these rooms, or rooms very like them, on a particular evening in July, and that he was happy. What I cannot know, however carefully I read the surviving account, is what that evening was actually like to be inside. Where exactly he sat. What the rooms smelled like on a warm night with the windows open to the fields. Which window he looked through when the talk turned, as he says it did, to glaciers he had climbed on the other side of the world. What it felt like to be received, after forty years away, as family. Almost everything that made that evening an evening, rather than a fact about an evening, is inaccessible, permanently, to anyone who was not there. The recursive life of that visit has vanished as completely as if it had never been written down at all. Only the house, and the three words that describe it, remain.
Muir performed a version of this same experiment during the same visit, on his own account rather than on the house he was borrowing from his cousins. A few streets away stood the house of his own childhood, sold by his father decades earlier and turned since into a temperance hotel. He wrote ahead to his wife that he meant to go, he said, for nothing else than to take a look at the dormer window he had once climbed out of in his nightgown as a boy, to see what kind of an adventure it really was. He got his wish. The hotel's proprietor took him upstairs and let him examine the window itself, unchanged, exactly where it had always been. And what he found, standing in front of the one piece of his own childhood that had actually survived intact, was not the adventure he had gone looking for. It was its absence. With all his later experience as one of the country's most accomplished mountaineers, he wrote, what he had done in daring boyhood was now beyond his skill. The window remained. The boy who had climbed through it, and whatever it had felt like to be that boy, did not, and no amount of standing in front of the window, however patiently, could bring either back.
There is a further, quieter version of the same disappearance built into my own house, one that requires no visiting naturalist to notice. Beside the fireplace in what is now a sitting room there is a small ceramic fitting, clearly original to the building, clearly once connected to something, that nobody now living can explain with any confidence. It is probably a servant's bell pull, a call button once wired to a board in a kitchen that no longer exists in the form it once did, though nobody can say for certain, and there is no one left to ask who would know. The fitting itself has survived a century and more without difficulty. Ceramic does not much care what happens to the household around it. What has not survived is the competence required to read it: the shared, ordinary knowledge, once distributed across everyone who lived in or worked in a house like this, of what such a fitting was for and what it would have meant to press it. That knowledge required no particular effort to maintain as long as anyone who held it was still walking through the room. It required no effort to lose, either. It simply needed everyone who held it to die, or move away, or stop needing it, and it was gone within a single generation, quietly, without anyone noticing it happening until it already had.
Time, it turns out, does not perform only the one conversion described earlier in this article, the conversion of lived experience into closed, unanswerable past. It performs a second conversion alongside the first, and this one is aimed not at experience but at meaning. A description survives while the evening it described disappears. A window survives while the boy who climbed through it disappears. A fitting survives while the shared understanding of what it was for disappears. In every case the material remains, intact and indifferent, exactly where it has always been. What time actually erodes is not the object. It is the living competence, always distributed among people rather than stored in things, that once made the object mean something more than what it materially is.
VIII. Why Human Beings Need the Nonrecursive
The alternative makes clear how much is actually at stake in everything this article has so far described as ordinary domestic life. Picture a house, or a household, or a life, in which nothing that happened ever became fixed. Every conversation remained permanently open, capable of being reopened and renegotiated at any moment by anyone involved. Every repair had to be performed again the moment it was finished, since nothing that had once been mended stayed mended. Every skill, once learned, evaporated and had to be relearned from nothing the next time it was needed. The house itself would have to be built anew each morning, since nothing about yesterday's walls carried over into today's. Every relationship, every agreement, every shared understanding of who is responsible for what, would need to be settled again from scratch, continuously, with no earlier settlement counting for anything at all.
Such a life is not merely difficult to imagine. It is not a life at all, in any sense that would be recognisable as human. It is pure, unrelieved recursion, responsiveness with no ground to stand on, and no living being could sustain it for more than a very short time before collapsing under the sheer weight of having to renegotiate everything, always, from nothing. This is the actual reason human beings require the nonrecursive, and the reason has to be stated precisely, because the obvious way of putting it gets the emphasis backwards. It is not that human life is somehow deficient in responsiveness, and needs the nonrecursive to compensate for that deficiency. It is the opposite. Human life is extraordinarily, almost unmanageably recursive, more thoroughly interwoven with the responses of other people, other bodies, other minds, than almost any other form of life on the planet, and it is precisely because of this that it could not survive without producing, continuously, a great deal of ground that does not respond to anything at all.
This is the point at which the three different ways coordination can behave finally need to be told apart properly, because the house has already shown all three without naming them. Some things about the house do not respond to how they are treated at all: the flashing above the chimney did not reorganise itself because I diagnosed it, the ceramic fitting beside the fireplace does not care whether anyone remembers what it was for, the description a very pretty home has not altered itself in the century since it was written, however many times it has since been read. Call this nonrecursive coordination, and notice what it is actually for. It provides the stability that nothing else in the house could provide, precisely because it does not answer back.
Other things about the house respond, but only to themselves: the boiler's own wear pattern responds to how it has been used and maintained, the timber in the roof responds to its own moisture content in a way that is not indifferent but is also not a response to me, only to its own accumulating condition. Call this selfrecursive coordination. It is what makes ongoing monitoring and repair possible at all, since a system that never actually responded to its own state could not be maintained, only replaced.
And a great deal of what has actually mattered in this article, the evenings Muir spent with his Scottish cousin, the arguments and Christmas mornings that filled my own years in this house, the conversation I will have with a guest this evening about none of this, is interrecursive: coordination between multiple parties who are each responding to the other's responses in a loop that neither one controls alone. This is where a household, in the fullest sense, actually happens, and it is also the least stable of the three, since two or more people responding to each other's responses can go almost anywhere, and very often do.
None of these three ways of coordinating replaces or outcompetes the others, and a household that tried to run entirely on one of them would fail as surely as a household that had none of the nonrecursive at all. What actually happens, constantly, in a house and in a life, is that coordination keeps moving between them, in one direction only at any given step, even though the overall traffic runs both ways. An interrecursive evening of conversation between cousins becomes, the moment it ends, a closed and nonrecursive fact: three words, in this case, that no subsequent evening can revise. A selfrecursive process of slow decay in a roof timber becomes, once it is noticed, an interrecursive negotiation between me and a roofer, which becomes, once the work is done, a nonrecursive repair that nobody will think about again for a decade. And a nonrecursive deposit, once it exists, becomes in turn the ground for entirely new recursive life that could not otherwise have occurred: the closed fact a very pretty home is what allows you, and anyone else who reads this, to have an interrecursive conversation, right now, about an evening neither of us attended. No individual conversion here ever runs backward. A closed fact does not reopen into the evening that produced it. But the traffic between the three types, taken as a whole and over time, never stops, and it is this continuous, one-way-at-a-time traffic, not any single kind of coordination working alone, that makes a household, or a life, actually run.
Widen this out from the house to everything a human life actually consists of, and the same picture holds at every scale. The whole of what philosophy calls the mesocosm, the entire lived field within which a human life becomes available to itself and to others, is best understood not as a fixed setting within which recursive life happens to occur, but as an accumulating system for converting recursive activity into stable environments that make further recursive activity possible. Human beings do not merely tolerate the nonrecursive, the way a species might merely tolerate an environmental constraint it cannot change. They manufacture it, continuously, at every scale from a repaired roof to a written constitution, because it is the only thing that makes the vast and otherwise unmanageable quantity of recursive life they are capable of sustaining actually liveable.
IX. Civilisation as Recursive Custodianship
Living in an old house long enough, replacing what fails and maintaining what has not yet failed, changes how I think about my relationship to the building, and the change is easy to miss because it happens so gradually. I stop, without quite deciding to, thinking of myself as the house's owner in any sense that would have made sense to my younger self buying the place. I come instead to think of myself as something closer to its custodian: the person currently responsible for keeping it standing, not because I built it, and not primarily because I plan to enjoy the benefits of my care indefinitely, but because it has been placed, for a while, in my hands.
The distinction matters more than it might first appear. An owner, in the ordinary sense, is entitled to use up what they own: to let a garden run to seed if they no longer care for gardening, to leave a roof unrepaired if the cost of repair outweighs whatever benefit they expect to get from the house before they leave it. A custodian cannot think this way, or at least cannot think this way without a specific and uncomfortable sense of having failed at something. I repair a roof this house did not, strictly, need repaired for my own comfort; the leak was slow enough that it would probably have outlasted my own tenure. I maintain the garden in a way that has very little to do with how often I actually walk through it. I replace old windows with new ones built to the same proportions, at real expense, for reasons that have almost nothing to do with my own heating bills and almost everything to do with a house that looked a particular way when it was built, and that I have come to feel some obligation to keep looking that way.
None of this labour is for me, not really, or not only for me. Every repair carried out on an old house is, in the most literal sense available, a gift to someone I will never meet: the family who will live here after I have gone, whose names I do not know and whose lives I cannot picture, who will one day wake up in this house and, if the repair has been done well, notice absolutely nothing about the roof, the windows, or the garden, because none of it will be asking anything of them. This is, when I actually sit with it, a strange thing to spend money and effort on. I am working, quite deliberately, to produce an experience of invisibility for people who do not yet exist and who will never know my name.
It is also, once I notice it, the clearest possible image of what civilisation actually is, considerably clearer than the images usually offered in its place. Civilisation is not primarily a story about progress, as though each generation simply builds a taller structure than the one before. It is not primarily a story about technology, or about institutions, though both play their part in it. At bottom, civilisation is the intergenerational custodianship of recursive deposits: the practice, repeated across every household and every generation without most of the people involved ever using that phrase for it, of receiving a largely functioning world, adding to it whatever remediation the present generation's own recursive labour makes possible, and passing the whole accumulated structure on to people who will never know most of what went into making it liveable.
Every generation that has ever lived in this house has done exactly this, whether or not any of them would have described it in these terms. Muir's cousin did it. Whoever came after her did it too. I am doing it now, in a study that did not exist in its current form a century ago, with a roof that has been repaired more times than anyone kept count of, for the benefit of people who have not yet been born and who will, if the work has been done properly, never think to thank me for any of it. This is not a diminished way of thinking about what a household is for. It is very close to the truest way available, and the house, more patiently than any argument could, is what finally teaches it to me.
X. The Quiet Triumph of the Nonrecursive
Return, to close, to the morning this article began with. Nothing about it has changed. I wake at the usual time, go down, make coffee. The stairs carry me without comment. I walk through to open the curtains, look out at a garden that has, by now, entirely forgotten the drought that once burned its lawn brown. The roof, repaired years ago now, has not leaked since, and I have not thought about it in months. By every outward measure, this is exactly the morning the article opened with: unremarkable, quiet, almost entirely lacking in anything that would seem worth writing about.
Only now do I know what that quiet is actually made of. It is not the absence of history. It is the accumulated, mostly invisible residue of an extraordinary quantity of it: well over a century of recursive labour, carried out by people whose names have mostly not survived and whose evenings, arguments, repairs, and Christmas mornings have vanished as completely as the description a very pretty home has survived. It is generations of maintenance, most of it performed by people who will never be thanked for it because nobody living today knows enough to thank them by name. It is countless acts of care, each one aimed, whether or not anyone doing the caring ever put it this way, at the same single goal: producing a house that would, eventually, ask nothing of whoever happened to be standing in it on an ordinary morning.
This is the deepest thing an old house can teach, and it generalises far beyond houses. Successful recursive life does not aim to be noticed, remembered, or admired for its success. It aims, if it is working properly, to make itself entirely unnecessary to think about, so completely that its own disappearance becomes the clearest evidence available that it worked. A repaired roof that nobody remarks upon has succeeded exactly as thoroughly as a peace nobody remembers negotiating, or an institution so well designed that its design goes unnoticed by everyone who benefits from it. The ambition of recursive labour, at every scale from a flashing repair to a civilisation, is its own erasure.
The house I live in has, in this precise sense, become what every successful piece of civilisation eventually becomes: an unnoticed background, built from an almost unimaginable quantity of past care, that asks nothing of me so that I, in turn, am free to spend my own recursive life on something other than the house itself. That is the quiet triumph this article set out to describe. It is not a small one. It is, when I actually see it for what it is, the whole of what civilisation has ever been for.
Part V. The Writing’s on the Wall Because the Wall Holds Still: Notation Systems as Recoverable Invariance
Abstract
Symbolisation is tens of thousands of years older than writing, so the question worth asking is not how human beings became capable of notation but why, after so long a period of capability, durable notation became worth its considerable cost. This article answers an architectural question rather than a causal one. It sets out four conditions any arrangement must satisfy if it is to keep a distinction actionable across absence: a carrier that holds its form, an invariance a later party can recover without having witnessed anything, a route by which the deposit is encountered again, and an institution that reproduces competent uptake. Two arrangements satisfy these conditions, maintained marks and maintained interpreters, and the choice between them is a cost comparison rather than a stage of development, which is why complex societies have repeatedly declined durable notation, adopted it for some domains and not others, and abandoned it. The article distinguishes address from retrieval as the two routes back to a deposit, argues that what arrives late in history is order-independent retrieval rather than retrieval as such, and traces the manufacture of invariance through standardised containers, measures, calendars, offices, and names. Cases are drawn from the archaic Uruk archives, Abydos and Wadi al-Jarf, Anyang, the Linear B palaces, the Indus valley, the Andean khipu, and documentary England. A closing section positions recoverable invariance against immutable mobiles, media bias, commensuration, classification, and phenomenological sedimentation.
I. The Wrong Question
The origins of writing are usually posed as a question about human capacities. At some point, the story goes, human beings began to make marks that stood for things, developed notation, signs, accounting devices, and eventually scripts, and the explanation for this development is sought in the mind: in a growing capacity for abstraction, representation, symbolic thought, or increasingly complex communication. This begins in the wrong place, because multisymbolization was already ancient by the time anything recognisable as writing appeared. Perforated marine shells worn as beads are attested well over one hundred thousand years ago. The engraved ochre plaques from Blombos Cave carry deliberate cross-hatched designs some seventy-five thousand years old, and the same site has yielded a cross-hatch drawn in ochre on a silcrete flake at around seventy-three thousand. The engraved ostrich eggshell containers from Diepkloof preserve a repertoire of hatched band motifs sustained across a long stretch of the Howiesons Poort sequence, the absolute duration of which depends on which of two competing chronologies for the site one accepts.
Human beings painted, marked bodies, made ornaments, buried their dead with grave goods, maintained ritual traditions, told stories, named places, and coordinated through elaborate symbolic systems for tens of millennia before any of them kept a written account of anything. The interesting question is therefore not why humans became capable of writing, but why, after so extraordinarily long a period of symbolic capability, durable notation became worth its cost.
An earlier article in this series distinguished the two poietic mediations, multimateriality and multisymbolization, from the three zoetic ones, and defined civilisation as the cumulative, intergenerational sedimentation of recursive coordination into multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors that restructure the conditions of later life. Writing belongs squarely inside that definition as one especially consequential instance of it, and is in no sense the beginning of multisymbolization. What increases with writing is one specific property: sedimentability, the capacity of a formed state to persist beyond the activity that produced it and to be taken up again by people who took no part in producing it.
II. What Kind of Claim This Is
Three distinct questions travel under the heading of the origins of writing, and confusing them produces most of the bad arguments in the field. The first is causal and local: why did proto-cuneiform appear in southern Mesopotamia in the late fourth millennium rather than somewhere else or at another time. Answering it requires evidence about that region in that period, and no general theory can substitute for it. The second is comparative and statistical: why do durable notational systems appear repeatedly in societies of a certain kind, and fail to appear in others of apparently similar scale. Answering it requires a sample and an account of variation. The third question is architectural: what must be true of any arrangement whatsoever that succeeds in keeping a distinction actionable across absence.
This article answers the third question and uses the first two as material. The architectural claim is that four conditions must all be satisfied, and that failure of any one destroys the arrangement regardless of how well the others are met. A carrier must hold its form. Something must retain a formed state without continuous attention, whether that something is clay, stone, knotted cotton, a trained body, or a landscape feature.
An invariance must be recoverable. A later party who witnessed nothing must be able to re-identify what the deposit is about, which requires that the referent, or some abstracted dimension of it, remain sufficiently the same to be picked out again. A route back must exist. The deposit must be encountered again, either because it stands where the relevant people must pass, which this article calls address, or because someone who knows it exists goes and finds it, which this article calls retrieval. Competent uptake must be reproduced. Somebody must be able to read the deposit and act on it, which requires an institution that goes on producing such people after the original participants are gone.
These four conditions are the analytic spine of everything that follows, and they generate the article’s negative predictions as directly as its positive ones. An arrangement that satisfies all four should be durable even when it looks primitive, which is why a notched stick and a knotted cord can administer a debt and an empire respectively. An arrangement that fails the fourth condition should die while its carriers survive intact, which is what an undeciphered script is. An arrangement that fails the third should sit inert while remaining perfectly legible, which is what an uncatalogued archive is.
Nothing in this framework says that thickening coordination causes writing to appear. The claim is that as persistent recursive relevance accumulates, satisfying the four conditions through living memory alone becomes progressively more expensive, and made anchors become comparatively cheaper. Cost comparisons do not determine outcomes, and the following sections take non-adoption, partial adoption, and abandonment as seriously as invention.
III. Notation Before Writing
The claim that notation is older than writing is safe. The claim that any particular Palaeolithic object is a notation is not, and the difference between these two claims deserves more care than it usually receives.
Three levels of inference should be kept apart. That a mark was deliberately produced is often securely established by microscopy, by the regularity of the incisions, and by the labour the object represents. That a set of marks is structured, in the sense of exhibiting recurrence, grouping, or convention, can sometimes be established statistically. That a structured set of marks had a particular function, numerical, calendrical, or linguistic, is a further claim of a different order, and it is where most of the argument in this field actually lives.
The Lebombo bone, a baboon fibula bearing twenty-nine incisions, is around forty thousand years old and secure at the first level. The Ishango bone carries three columns of grouped notches whose totals have supported arithmetical and lunar readings for seventy years, and is arguable at the second. Alexander Marshack’s proposal that many Upper Palaeolithic marked bones record lunar observation rests on microscopic evidence that marks within a sequence were made by different tools at different times, which supports accumulation over time without settling what was being accumulated. The recent proposal by Bacon and colleagues that dots, lines, and Y signs accompanying animal depictions in European cave art constitute a phenological calendar sits at the third level, and the assessment by Nowell, Bahn, and Le Quellec finds the theoretical and methodological grounds insufficient. The present argument requires none of the third-level claims and would be weakened by resting on them.
What the marked bones do establish is that mark-making capable of being returned to, inspected again, extended, and compared with itself is very old, and long precedes any of the social conditions this article treats as decisive. A tally is already a deposit in the strict sense, and it satisfies the first of the four conditions comfortably.
It fails, or barely meets, the other three. A private tally is legible to its maker and to a living interpreter who can be asked, so the recursive labour of remembering stays where it was and the mark merely assists it. It is unstandardised, so its invariance is recoverable by its maker rather than by a stranger, and it cannot be compared with another maker’s tally or audited against it. And no institution guarantees its interpretation once the maker is gone. Durability alone accomplishes very little, which is the reason this article treats sedimentation as a four-part achievement rather than a property of materials.
One further distinction is required. In coordination mode, a symbol operates on a counterpart who is present: the alarm call, the pointing gesture, the shout of warning. In reference-to-absence mode, a symbol stands for what is not there, whether a technique not currently performed, a maker not currently present, an obligation not currently being discharged, or a quantity not currently in view. The coupling of the poietic mediations depends on multisymbolization operating in the second mode, and notation is that mode given a material carrier. The tally already occupies it. What the tally lacks is a social world in which enough turns on absence to justify building institutions around marks.
IV. Two Solutions to Absence
Coordination across absence has two general solutions, and the comparative history of notation is better read as a running cost comparison between them than as a sequence of stages.
The first solution maintains interpreters. A body of trained people holds what must persist, and the persistence is secured by initiation, apprenticeship, repetition, performance, succession, and sanction against error. Genealogies, ritual sequences, legal precedent, navigational knowledge, technical procedure, and territorial rights have all been held this way at very large scale and with very high precision. The carrier is a trained body operating within a landscape whose features supply the fixed points, so the first condition is met by embodiment and dwelling working together rather than by clay.
The second solution maintains marks. A deposit is placed in a durable carrier, and persistence is secured by materials, custody, authentication, and retrieval.
The two solutions have opposite cost profiles, and neither dominates. Interpreter-borne anchoring requires continuous recursive labour from living people, which is expensive every year without exception, and it fails catastrophically at a generational break, since a single interrupted transmission destroys what centuries deposited. It is nonetheless richly mediated, since a trained interpreter carries the qualitative detail no notation preserves; it is difficult for outsiders to forge, since one cannot counterfeit a song one has never been taught; and it cannot be consulted by strangers, which is frequently the point rather than a defect. Mark-borne anchoring requires only intermittent maintenance, survives interruptions in transmission for long periods, and can be consulted by people the maker never met. It is forgeable by anyone who can hold a stylus, it demediates savagely, and it carries a standing retrieval cost that interpreter-borne systems do not, since a person who knows something can be asked, whereas a tablet in a basket must be found.
This comparison explains what a developmental story cannot. Non-adoption becomes intelligible: where an interpreter cadre is already being reproduced reliably for other reasons, whether a priesthood, a lineage office, a guild, or a court, the marginal gain from marks is small, and the investment in durable notation may never repay itself. Where a polity actively prefers its holdings not to be consultable by strangers, marks are a liability rather than an asset. Selective adoption becomes intelligible too: societies take up notation first in the domains where the interpreter solution is most strained, which are large numbers, long delays, distant places, and disputes among people who do not know one another. This is why the domains that fall first are accounting, tribute, calendar, and boundary, and why myth, law, and story often follow centuries later or never. Abandonment becomes intelligible: a mark system whose maintaining institution collapses loses the fourth condition immediately, and the deposits remain while the capacity to use them disappears.
Address and retrieval belong here rather than as a late refinement, because they determine the cost side of the mark solution. In address, the deposit stands where the relevant people must pass, and reaches them without anyone having to look: the boundary stone, the inscribed lintel, the monumental façade, the milestone, the posted edict, the coin passing hand to hand, the sign on a door. Address is cheap, and its reach is broad and shallow. In retrieval, the deposit sits inert until someone who knows it exists goes and finds it, which requires a place that persists, an ordering principle, a labelling practice, and a person trained to know the record is there. Retrieval is expensive, and its reach is narrow and deep. A society that wants the effects of address can have them with a stone and a chisel. A society that wants the effects of retrieval has to build a bureaucracy, which is a large part of why archives and administrations appear together.
V. The Thickening of the Past
Sedentism did considerably more than place people in villages instead of moving landscapes: it changed the temporal architecture of human existence. Fields remained where they were. Houses persisted and were repaired. Grain accumulated in structures built before the scarcity they anticipated. Animals belonged to particular households and their reproductive histories acquired continuity. Storage vessels contained measurable quantities. Paths became recurrent, boundaries mattered repeatedly, and debts survived the encounters in which they were incurred. Obligations extended across seasons. Property remained attached to persons who were absent. Ancestors became attached to places. Institutions had to coordinate people who could no longer resolve every conflict by separating.
The Levantine sequence shows how early this begins and how loosely it is tied to agriculture. Natufian communities were building substantial semi-subterranean dwellings and burying their dead within settlements well before cereal domestication. The granaries at Dhra' in the Jordan valley, with raised floors for air circulation and capacity well beyond household consumption, date to around eleven thousand three hundred years ago on the excavators' chronology, which places purpose-built storage before domesticated crops rather than after them. The monumental enclosures at Göbekli Tepe, with their carved T-shaped pillars, were raised by populations whose subsistence remained substantially foraging. At Çatalhöyük, houses were rebuilt repeatedly on the footprint of their predecessors, the dead were buried beneath the floors, and skulls were plastered, painted, and circulated among the living, so that a household’s material fabric was itself an accumulation of its own past.
Agriculture is therefore not the operative variable, and neither is population size, urbanisation, hierarchy, or cognitive complexity taken separately. James Woodburn’s distinction between immediate-return and delayed-return systems names the relevant threshold more precisely than any subsistence category. Where yields are consumed close to the point of acquisition and rights over them are not held across long intervals, very little needs to be stabilised symbolically. Where labour is invested now against a return that arrives much later, where the return is held in a store, and where claims on that store are distributed among people who will not all be present when it is opened, coordination acquires a temporal depth that living presence alone struggles to cover.
The relevant transformation is accordingly an increase in the density of persistent recursive relevance. A field is not recursively alive, and does not care who owns it. A wall does not recognise the boundary it marks. A grain store has no interest in its contents. These nonrecursive things nonetheless become extraordinarily important within recursive human relations. The field matters because several people may remember who cleared it, planted it, inherited it, or claimed it. The wall matters because it stabilises a distinction between inside and outside that would otherwise require continuous enforcement. The grain matters because its present distribution determines future survival, and access to it may depend on previous contributions, kin relations, status, or obligation. Nonrecursive material things become the anchoring points around which interrecursive relationships accumulate.
This produces a specific and productive asymmetry. Human relationships are responsive and therefore revisable at every moment, while fields, walls, and granaries are not. A person can change their mind about who owes what; a field remains where it is. Someone can deny that ten measures of barley were delivered, and the barley may already have been eaten. Someone can die leaving unresolved claims behind. A herd increases, divides, and is inherited. The growing persistence of the material world generates increasing pressure to stabilise relationships that possess no comparable persistence of their own, and both solutions to absence become more expensive at once, which is what makes the choice between them consequential.
VI. Recoverable Invariance, and What Would Refute It
Notation selects for stability rather than representing the world indiscriminately, and this may be its deepest property. What is easiest to write is whatever can be made to remain the same long enough for the mark to go on referring to it. Numbers are powerful because they discard nearly all qualitative variation. Names stabilise persons across bodily and situational change. Property categories stabilise relations between persons and things. Calendrical notation stabilises recurring temporal differences. Measures stabilise comparisons between otherwise heterogeneous substances. Notation flourishes wherever differences can be repeatedly recovered.
Grain is almost ideally suited to this operation. Individual grains are extraordinarily similar, so they can be measured without describing each one. Grain persists, divides, transfers, and can be owed. It carries immense metabolic significance while being itself entirely nonrecursive. It therefore combines material persistence, standardisability, quantifiability, transferability, and future relevance in a single substance. A notation associating a quantity of grain with a particular person, household, or institution allows a relation between people and resources to survive the encounter in which that relation was established.
Livestock work almost as well, at the cost of a more violent reduction. Animals are alive, mobile, individual, and variable, and yet they possess dimensions that abstract into stable categories: three sheep, five cattle, a number of goats of a given age and sex. The notation captures nothing of the animal as a lived counterpart. Its condition, temperament, smell, history, and relations with the herdsman disappear entirely. What survives is what the coordination problem requires, and this selection is the achievement rather than the defect, since only what has been stripped down in this way can travel to a reader who was never present.
The concept needs a criterion, or it becomes unfalsifiable decoration. An invariance is recoverable when a competent later party who witnessed nothing can re-identify the referent well enough for the coordination at issue. Two features of this criterion do real work. It is relative to the stake rather than absolute, so the invariance required to allocate a ration is far less than the invariance required to transfer title to land, and a notation adequate for the first will fail for the second. And it is relative to a competent party rather than to any reader, so recovery is a property of the arrangement as a whole rather than of the mark.
The criterion supplies failure conditions, and history supplies the failures. Boundaries are disputed because two parties re-identify a line differently. Measures are contested because a container in one town holds more than a container of the same name in another. Names collide, and two men called the same thing appear in the same register. Seals are forged, and the party who authenticated a document turns out not to have. If recovery were incidental to what notation is for, these failures would be tolerated as noise. What the record instead shows is enormous and continuous investment in repairing exactly these failures, through patronymics and professional epithets, witness lists, duplicate texts, sealed envelopes, metrological standardisation, physical boundary markers, and cadastral survey. The repairs are the evidence.
They also point to the argument’s most important addition. Invariance is very often manufactured rather than found. The archaic Mesopotamian record makes this visible with unusual clarity. Bevelled-rim bowls, crudely moulded, mass produced in enormous quantities, and approximately standardised in capacity, are among the most abundant artefacts of the Uruk period and are widely interpreted as ration containers. The archaic sign for a ration of bread appears to derive from the profile of such a bowl. A multimaterial anchor, the standardised container, thereby underwrites a multisymbolic anchor, the sign that counts rations, and neither would function as it does without the other. The same coupling recurs wherever measurement is institutionalised: in the sila and the gur of Mesopotamian capacity measurement, in the cubical chert weights of the Indus cities with their consistent ratios, in the shekel, in the standardised brick, in the surveyor’s rope.
Persons receive the same treatment. A name is a manufactured invariance imposed on a counterpart who changes continuously, and administrative systems reliably supplement it when it proves insufficient, with patronymics, professions, places of origin, seal impressions, and later with registers, numbers, and biometrics. What the record needs is a recoverable handle on the person rather than the person, and the history of administration is in large part the history of manufacturing better handles.
VII. The Archaic Sequence as One Trajectory
The Mesopotamian material is the best documented case available, and it is treated here as one regionally specific trajectory rather than as the sequence through which writing must pass. Its interest lies in showing the four conditions being satisfied step by step, and in the fact that its own specialists disagree about the steps.
Sealing comes first and is instructive in its own right. Stamp seals appear in the Neolithic Near East long before any script, and cylinder seals appear in the Uruk period around the middle of the fourth millennium. Wet clay pressed over the cord of a jar stopper, a bundle, a basket, or a door-lock, and impressed with a distinctive design, makes access visible and non-deniable rather than preventing it, since the sealing must be broken to reach the contents and cannot be reconstituted without the seal. The sealing is a nonrecursive witness posted at a point where recursive negotiation would otherwise be unconstrained. It is also a pure case of address, since it stands exactly where anyone who matters must pass, and it therefore requires no retrieval infrastructure at all, which is part of why sealing is so much older than archives.
Clay tokens of varied geometric shapes circulate across the Near East from the eighth millennium onward, and Denise Schmandt-Besserat’s influential reconstruction treats them as direct ancestors of the archaic signs, with token shapes carried over into impressed and incised marks. Robert Englund, Paul Zimansky, and others have raised serious objections concerning the chronological and typological continuity the thesis requires, and the strong version should be held loosely. What is not in dispute is the practice attested in the late fourth millennium, in which tokens were enclosed within hollow clay spheres whose exteriors were sealed and, in a number of cases, impressed with marks corresponding to the tokens inside. The arrangement contains its own resolution, since once the exterior carries the information the interior becomes redundant, and flattened tablets bearing impressed numerical signs and seal impressions follow. Numero-ideographic tablets add signs for the commodity counted. Proto-cuneiform tablets from Uruk IV, around 3300 BCE, add enough further signs to constitute a system.
The content of that system is famously disappointing to anyone expecting the externalisation of thought. Of the several thousand archaic tablets from Uruk and its successors, the overwhelming majority are administrative, recording quantities of grain, beer, textiles, livestock, land, labour, and rations against officials, institutions, and periods of account. The remainder are lexical lists, standardised inventories of signs and categories used in training and reference. There is no literature for several centuries. The history of writing begins with an accountant rather than a poet, which is disappointing only to an account that has misidentified the problem being solved.
Two peculiarities of the archaic material carry heavy theoretical load. The first is metrological. Archaic bookkeeping employs more than a dozen distinct counting and measuring systems, and the value of an impressed sign depends on which system is in play, with different systems for discrete objects, grain capacity, land area, particular commodity rations, and time. The same mark does not mean the same quantity across contexts, which is to say that there is as yet no abstract number in the record. System-independent number, and eventually the sexagesimal place-value notation that made Babylonian mathematics possible, emerge out of centuries of accounting and metrological practice rather than preceding them. Peter Damerow’s insistence that early representational systems be analysed as historically specific ways of producing knowledge, rather than as incomplete versions of later ones, is the right methodological setting for this. Notation comes first in a strong and specific sense: people do not need a philosophy of number in order to keep track of quantities, they need recurrent differences that matter, and the practice of stabilising such differences can itself generate the conditions for more abstract systems.
The second peculiarity concerns names, and here the argument should be stated more carefully than it usually is. An administrative system must identify persons, and a person’s name is not depictable in the way a sheep or a jar is. What can be recovered about a name is its sound, and the rebus principle, in which a sign for a depictable thing is used for the sound of its name, provides a route. Sumerian, with its short and largely monosyllabic roots, was unusually hospitable to that move. The defensible claim is that administrative identification of persons is one of the settings in which phonographic resources appear early and are put to sustained use, rather than that administration caused phonography. Even the weaker claim is instructive, since it locates the first sustained encoding of speech in the requirement to re-identify a particular someone across absence, which is exactly the second of the four conditions. A tablet from the archaic corpus carries the sign sequence conventionally read as Kushim, associated with quantities of barley in a brewing context, and has been described, with appropriate caution about whether it names an individual or an office, as the earliest personal name recoverable from any document.
The Egyptian evidence points the same way from a different direction. The small bone and ivory labels from Tomb U-j at Abydos, of around 3200 BCE, were attached to grave goods and carry signs indicating quantities, commodities, and apparently the estates that supplied them. The serekh, the panelled frame enclosing a royal name, appears on jars and sealings of the same horizon. Egyptian writing is phonographic very early because names had to be written, and it is administrative and display-oriented from the outset rather than passing through a purely administrative phase.
VIII. Why Some Archives Are Accounts and Others Are King Lists
The Aegean case tests the argument under near-laboratory conditions. Linear B, deciphered by Michael Ventris in 1952 and shown to record an early form of Greek, is attested at Knossos, Pylos, Thebes, and Mycenae from roughly the fifteenth to the thirteenth centuries. Its content is administrative without exception: personnel lists, ration allocations, land tenure holdings, quantities of wool, oil, and grain, inventories of chariot wheels and furniture, offerings to deities. There are no letters, no narratives, no laws, and no literature.
The material dimension of these archives makes an argument of its own. The tablets were sun-dried rather than fired, intended to serve the administrative year and then to be recycled as accounts were consolidated. They survive because the palaces burned, which baked what was meant to be temporary and preserved exactly the documents the system intended to destroy. A carrier’s durability is calibrated to the coordination problem, and this system required anchors that would last a season.
The collapse of the palace centres around 1200 terminated the script, and writing disappears from the Aegean for roughly four centuries. The fourth condition failed: the redistributive administration that trained scribes and required accounts ceased to exist, and with it the reproduction of competent uptake. When alphabetic writing returns in the eighth century, borrowed from Phoenician and adapted with vowel letters, the earliest Greek inscriptions are not accounts at all, but a hexameter joke on a drinking cup, a line of verse on a wine jug offered as a dancing prize, dedications, and graffiti. A script’s origination and its adoption have entirely different social profiles, and any general theory of writing that ignores the distinction will misread every case after the first.
The Chinese evidence yields a different content profile again. The oracle bone inscriptions from Anyang, from around 1250 onward, are divinatory records: the charge put to ancestors or to the high god, the date, the diviner, the interpretation of cracks produced by heat applied to prepared turtle plastrons and cattle scapulae, and in a proportion of cases a verification recording what subsequently happened. This is an institution auditing its own record against the world and archiving the result in pits. Contemporary and slightly later bronze inscriptions do something else again, recording royal awards and their occasion and closing with the formula that sons and grandsons for ten thousand years should treasure and use the vessel. The inscription addresses the unborn, which is as compact a statement of the sedimentary function as any theory could ask for, and it is a case of address rather than retrieval, since the vessel is handled and seen by exactly the descendants it names.
Mesoamerican writing is bound from its earliest appearances to calendrical notation and dynastic legitimation rather than to accounting. Monument 3 at San José Mogote carries a calendar name beside a sacrificed captive. Maya inscriptions concern accession, warfare, ritual obligation, and the placement of rulers within cycles of enormous length, with the Long Count fixing events against a fixed epoch in a way that permits coordination of dates across centuries. Comparative work on Mesoamerica has found no simple relation between polity scale and the elaboration of writing, which is exactly what the cost comparison of section IV predicts and what a developmental account cannot accommodate.
The accounting-first pattern is therefore a tendency generated by a particular strain on the interpreter solution rather than a law governing writing. Where a redistributive institution must track contributions and disbursements among people who cannot all be present, quantities and persons are what get written first. Where the pressing problem is the durability of authority, the legitimacy of succession, or the placement of the present within a ritual cycle, the same operation yields calendars, king lists, and monumental inscriptions. In both cases the principle holds: what gets deposited is what must remain recursively relevant when the people who established it are absent, and the difference lies in what a given institution cannot afford to have forgotten.
IX. Notation Without Writing, and the Coupling Under Strain
The Andean case forces a definitional decision that the Mesopotamian case allows one to postpone. The Inka administered several million people across thousands of kilometres of extreme terrain, with a road system, storehouses, labour levies, censuses, and tribute obligations, using knotted cords rather than any glottographic script. The khipu encodes quantity by knot type and position on a pendant cord in a decimal arrangement, with long knots, single knots, and figure-eight knots distinguishing values and units, and it carries further information in colour, in the direction of ply and attachment, and in the hierarchical organisation of pendant, subsidiary, and top cords. Gary Urton and Carrie Brezine showed for a set of khipus from Puruchuco that values on cords at one level sum to values recorded at another, which is to say that the corpus preserves an accounting hierarchy in the ordinary bureaucratic sense.
Reading the cords was an office. The khipukamayuq was trained, held responsible, and consulted, and Spanish colonial courts accepted testimony transcribed from khipus for decades before ecclesiastical authorities ordered their destruction. Later work complicates any assumption that the medium was confined to accounting: Sabine Hyland’s analysis of the Collata cords argues for a phonetic dimension, and Frank Salomon’s study of the patrimonial khipus of Tupicocha documents cords that served as insignia of communal office into the twentieth century, long after the capacity to read them had been lost. The Andean case is thus a system in which the mark solution and the interpreter solution were deliberately combined, with the cords carrying what could be carried and the trained officer carrying the rest.
The Indus valley presents a different problem. Some four thousand inscribed objects, mostly seals and sealings, carry short sign sequences averaging around five signs. Whether these encode language at all remains disputed, and the case that the system is nonlinguistic has been argued seriously. The dispute can remain open here, since on either reading the signs appear on the instruments by which goods were sealed, which is to say at exactly the point where a claim must survive an absence. Both the Indus corpus and the khipu are included as tests of the analytic category rather than as evidence that all such systems are versions of writing, and in both cases the honest position is that the fourth condition has failed for us: the deposits are intact and the competent readers are gone.
These cases also put pressure on the coupling thesis, which holds that multimateriality and multisymbolization only ever operate as a pair, and it is worth asking where that thesis could break. The khipu does not break it, since the material configuration of the cord is the notation, so that far from separating the mediations the artefact collapses them into a single object. Systems anchored in trained bodies and landscape features do not break it either, since embodiment supplies a carrier and dwelling supplies the fixed points, though that carrier is maintained continuously rather than intermittently, which is precisely the cost difference set out in section IV. What would break the thesis is a symbolic anchor with no material carrier of any kind, sustained across generations without bodies, objects, or places, and no documented case supplies one.
The definitional consequence is straightforward. Defining writing narrowly as the encoding of speech excludes the khipu, may exclude the Indus signs, and produces a category that cannot explain why all these systems occupy similar social positions and do similar work. Roy Harris’s case against a speech-transcription definition, and the argument of Elizabeth Boone and Walter Mignolo for taking writing without words seriously on its own terms, both point the same way. The category this theory requires is durable multisymbolic anchoring, of which the encoding of speech is one especially powerful instance, powerful because a phonographic system inherits the combinatorial resources of a language and can therefore record what its designers never anticipated. That versatility should not be mistaken for the origin.
X. Carriers, Authentication, and the Cost of Retrieval
No symbol persists without a material capable of holding a mark, and the properties of that material determine what survives to be studied. Clay is nearly indestructible once fired, and fires attend the destruction of cities, so Mesopotamia is over-represented in the record of early administration by an enormous margin. Papyrus survives only where it is dry, which is why the oldest inscribed papyri known, the logbooks from Wadi al-Jarf on the Red Sea coast, survived at all: they record the work of an inspector named Merer and his boat crew ferrying limestone from Tura to the construction site of Khufu’s pyramid, month by month, in what amounts to a timesheet from the building of the Great Pyramid. Bamboo slips, palm leaf, birch bark, and wooden tablets rot in humid climates, which has erased most of what South and Southeast Asia committed to writing before the common era and distorts every comparative account built on surviving documents. Wax tablets were designed to be erased and reused. The oracle bone survived because bone is durable and because the pits were sealed and forgotten.
Materiality also supplies what symbols cannot supply for themselves, which is authentication. A mark can be copied by anyone who can hold a stylus, and the value of a record depends on the reader’s confidence that it has not been. The split tally answers this elegantly. A stick notched across its width to record a debt is split lengthwise, creditor and debtor each holding one half, and the irregular grain of the split cannot be reproduced, so the halves authenticate one another by fitting. The English Exchequer used such tallies, in stock and foil, as instruments of royal finance for more than six centuries. Mesopotamian scribes solved the same problem differently, enclosing a contract tablet within a clay envelope on which the text was written again and sealed by witnesses, so that a disputed outer text could be checked against an inner one reachable only by destroying the seal. In both cases a multimaterial device secures a multisymbolic claim, and neither mediation would do the work alone.
Retrieval is where this argument must be stated carefully, because the obvious version of it is false. Ancient societies did not lack retrieval technologies. Mesopotamian archives used clay labels attached to tablet baskets, grouped records by type, sender, or transaction, stored them in dedicated rooms, and sealed the doors. Neo-Assyrian libraries used colophons and inventory texts. Callimachus compiled the Pinakes at Alexandria in the third century, which is a catalogue in any reasonable sense of the word. Retrieval was an institutional problem from very early, and institutions solved it.
What they solved it with was custodial knowledge. Early retrieval works because a person knows where things are, what the groupings mean, and which basket holds which year’s accounts, and the ordering principles are local, tacit, and unusable by anyone outside the establishment that produced them. What arrives late in history is order-independent retrieval: thoroughgoing alphabetisation, the subject index, pagination and running heads, the verbal concordance developed for preaching and legal argument in the thirteenth century, and eventually the catalogue that serves a reader the librarian has never met. The distinction is between retrieval that requires a custodian and retrieval that does not.
Stated that way the point becomes political rather than merely technical, and considerably stronger. For most of the history of the written record the deposit was durable and hard to find, and whoever controlled the place, the labels, the procedural knowledge, and the authorised reading controlled what the archive could be made to do. The cost of retrieval is a form of power, and reducing it redistributes power, which is why order-independent retrieval arrives in the company of universities, mendicant preaching, canon and common law, and later of printing.
XI. From Memory to Written Record
The transition is best documented not at any origin but in a case where an already literate society converted itself into a documentary one. Michael Clanchy’s study of England between the Norman Conquest and the early fourteenth century tracks that conversion in detail. Domesday Book in 1086 recorded holdings, values, and obligations across most of England with an ambition contemporaries found alarming, and over the following two centuries the volume of documents produced by royal government multiplied enormously, with the chancery’s consumption of sealing wax rising by roughly an order of magnitude across the middle decades of the thirteenth century.
The instructive part is the resistance and the supplementation. Documents were not initially trusted, since a parchment is silent and a witness can be questioned. So the document was surrounded with material and ritual guarantees. Charters were sealed, and the seal mattered more than the signature. Symbolic objects were attached to charters or handed over alongside them: a knife, a turf, a sod of earth from the land conveyed. Transfers of land were performed through livery of seisin, in which parties stood on the ground and a physical token changed hands before witnesses, with the charter recording what the ceremony accomplished rather than accomplishing it. Monastic houses forged charters in considerable numbers, often to document endowments they believed entirely real, because a new medium demanded a form that older transactions had never taken and the past had to be supplied with the evidence the present required.
The case is a textbook illustration of the two solutions running in parallel during a changeover. The witness is the interpreter solution, the charter is the mark solution, and for a century and a half English land law used both because neither alone commanded confidence. What eventually tipped the balance was not any improvement in parchment but the growth of an institution that could store, find, and authenticate documents on demand, which is the third and fourth conditions being satisfied at scale.
Literacy in this period is an institutional capacity rather than an individual accomplishment. Documents were read aloud, and a charter was published by being heard. The audit was a hearing, in the literal sense the word preserves. A magnate who could not read employed clerks who could, and this was the ordinary architecture of documentary power rather than a deficiency. The relevant question about any society is therefore not what proportion of its members can decipher marks, but how the capacity to produce, keep, find, read, and authenticate deposits is distributed.
This bears on a long argument in the anthropology of literacy. Jack Goody’s claim that writing, and particularly the list and the table, restructures thought by making comparison, classification, and contradiction visible identifies something real about what externalised marks make available for inspection. The stronger version, in which literacy as such carries uniform cognitive consequences, does not survive contact with the comparative record, as Brian Street’s critique established. Treating literacy as an institutional practice rather than as a technology with intrinsic effects makes both positions tractable. Marks outside the body can be inspected again, compared with other marks, extended beyond working memory, and applied recursively to one another, and records can become objects of further records. What determines whether any of this happens is the institution that maintains the deposits, trains the readers, and decides which comparisons are worth making.
XII. Recursive Escalation
Once records accumulate they can be compared. Once they can be compared, categories acquire consequence. Once categories are standardised, particular cases must be made to fit them. At this point the system begins to reshape its referents.
The Ur III administration of the twenty-first century provides the clearest early demonstration, and it should be stated with the precision the evidence supports. On Robert Englund’s analysis of the herding and labour accounts, the administration set expected outputs against recorded deliveries, using fixed daily labour norms for tasks such as earth-moving and expected rates of yield and reproduction for herds of given composition. The difference between expectation and delivery was recorded as a deficit and carried forward in the accounts from year to year, and there is evidence of deficits being charged against the estates of officials who had died. An accounting deficit is not automatically a legal debt, and the distinction between an entry, a liability, and an enforceable claim should be preserved rather than collapsed for rhetorical effect. The supportable statement is precise enough without exaggeration: within this apparatus an entry could render a shortfall visible, comparable, and actionable according to institutional rules, and the shortfall was computed from a norm rather than observed in the world. A shepherd could be held short of animals that had never been born, because the account specified how many should have been.
The same operation, at larger scale, is the history of administration. A field can be measured because it persists, and once the measurement becomes authoritative the field may be divided according to it. Grain can be counted because it is stored, and once accounting categories exist production may be organised around the categories. Persons can be named in registers because they persist socially across situations, and once registers exist, identities must increasingly correspond to the names the institution recognises. The Roman census, Chinese household registration, the Ottoman tahrir surveys, Domesday, the Napoleonic cadastre, and the imposition of permanent surnames for taxation and conscription all perform the same extraction of relatively invariant, comparable, recordable dimensions from complex living worlds. James Scott’s account of legibility gains rather than loses force when placed inside this trajectory, since the modern state inherited and amplified the operation rather than inventing it.
The reduction involved has a name in this theory. Notation is demediation, the stripping of a multisensorial, multispecies, dwelling-embedded, materially specific encounter to a category and a quantity that can travel. The term is used in the sense established across this series, for the removal of mediational richness from a counterpart, and it should not be confused with the media-theoretical use of remediation for the representation of one medium within another. To record three sheep is to forget almost everything about the sheep. To record a person’s name is to forget almost everything about the person. To mark a boundary is to suppress the ambiguous history of movements, uses, and relationships surrounding it. To write a law is to extract a generalisable distinction from the variation of particular cases. Writing is a technology of selective forgetting as much as of memory, and its portability is purchased precisely with what it discards.
Remediation is what a competent reader does with the result. The herdsman who reads three sheep knows which three, in what condition, in whose care, and on which pasture, and reconstitutes from the record a situation the record does not contain. The clerk who reads a name knows the household. Every functioning documentary system depends on readers who can put back what the notation removed, and the characteristic pathology of large administrative systems is the point at which readers can no longer do so, having never been present at anything the record demediated. At that point the categories confront everyone, including the administrators, as though they were the structure of the world.
This is where the history of notation becomes the deep prehistory of a characteristic error of social theory. Writing teaches its users to encounter stabilised distinctions as though the distinctions had been there all along. A field boundary comes to look like a property of the land, a recorded debt like a property of the debtor, a legal category like a property of the person, a classification like a property of reality, and eventually theoretical binaries like structures underlying human experience. The historical direction ran the other way. Living processes were continuous, multimediated, and recursively unstable; human beings extracted distinctions from them because distinctions were useful; they stabilised those distinctions materially because they needed them to persist; and only after sufficient sedimentation did the distinctions acquire the appearance of ontology.
XIII. The Dead Governing the Living
The asymmetry at the centre of the written record can be stated in a sentence: the inscription does not respond, and people respond to the inscription. A mark on clay holds the same shape regardless of who approaches it or how, which is exactly the property that lets it anchor, and everything politically consequential about writing follows from placing an unresponsive object in the middle of responsive human relations. A spoken claim depends on the person making it and can be met by addressing that person. A written claim detaches from its originator, travels where the speaker cannot, confronts someone years later, is copied, accumulates alongside other records, is consulted by strangers, and is incorporated into institutions. The appeal to what is written becomes a peculiar kind of argument because writing converts a historically situated act of distinction into something that confronts later actors as though it were part of the stable environment.
An anchor cannot enforce itself, and its makers have always known this. The most eloquent evidence is the curse formula. Mesopotamian boundary stones invoke the gods against anyone who removes, effaces, or alters them. Egyptian tomb inscriptions threaten those who would violate the burial. Assyrian foundation deposits address a future prince who will one day find the inscription during a restoration, instructing him to anoint it, make an offering, and return it to its place, promising divine favour if he does and calling down destruction if he does not. These formulae are attempts to attach an interrecursive enforcer to a nonrecursive deposit, because the maker can guarantee the mark’s persistence and cannot guarantee that any living person will care about it. A curse is what one writes when one needs an anchor to keep working after every institution that might defend it has gone.
Where the institution persists, the effects are correspondingly enormous. Laws survive legislators and are applied to circumstances their drafters never anticipated. Scriptures survive prophets and generate interpretive institutions whose entire purpose is the recursive uptake of a fixed deposit. Contracts survive signatories. Mathematical proofs are re-entered centuries later by readers who need nothing from their authors. Bureaucratic categories confront newborn persons long before those persons have any conception of them. The symbolic residues of previous recursion become part of the apparently nonrecursive world into which subsequent generations are born, and the dead govern the living through no supernatural agency whatever, but through the material fact that their coordination was deposited into the ground the living have no choice but to work within.
Lexical lists make the point with a purity no political example achieves. The Standard Professions List, an ordered inventory of official titles compiled at Uruk in the late fourth millennium, was copied by scribes for roughly a thousand years, long after many of the offices it names had ceased to exist in any recognisable form. Its persistence had nothing to do with its accuracy and everything to do with its position in training, since copying it was what made someone a scribe. A curriculum is a sedimented anchor that reproduces the readers who will go on reproducing it, which is the fourth condition maintaining itself by circular means.
XIV. What This Adds
Several established literatures approach this territory, and the contribution claimed here should be stated against them rather than in isolation.
The nearest neighbour is Bruno Latour’s immutable mobile. Both concepts concern the stabilisation of selected features so that they can be handled elsewhere, and both insist that the achievement is material and institutional rather than representational. The difference lies in the axis. Latour’s mobiles are optimised for movement across space and for combination at centres of calculation, so their defining virtues are portability, flatness, superimposability, and scale-independence. Recoverable invariance concerns immobility across time and the re-identification of a particular referent after absence. A boundary stone is an excellent anchor and a terrible mobile. A cadastral map is both, and the two properties can be prised apart, since what makes the map combinable with other maps is not what makes a parcel re-identifiable in twenty years. Latour’s account also supplies no criterion for the recursive status of a counterpart, and the asymmetry this article rests on, that the deposit does not answer while people answer to it, cannot be stated within a framework that distributes agency evenly across a network.
Harold Innis is the closest precedent for section IV. His distinction between time-biased and space-biased media, stone and clay against papyrus and paper, identified the durability and portability trade-off decades before it was rediscovered, and tied it to the character of empires. What is added here is that the trade-off runs not only between media but between media and persons, since maintained interpreters are the alternative a media-centred analysis leaves out, and non-adoption of writing is unintelligible without them.
The phenomenological precedent should be acknowledged plainly. Husserl’s account of the origin of geometry argues that writing secures ideal objectivity by making a sense-formation available in the absence of the originating subject, and calls the resulting layering sedimentation, a term this series uses in a related sense. Derrida’s commentary made the reactivation problem central, since a sediment that cannot be reactivated becomes a crust rather than a foundation. The present article runs the analysis in the opposite direction. Rather than asking how writing secures ideality, it asks what kind of world makes the securing worth its cost, and it treats reactivation as an institutional problem about trained readers, custody, and retrieval rather than as an epistemological one about recovering an original evidence.
Two sociological literatures are adjacent and distinct. Bowker and Star show that classification systems and standards institutionalise viewpoints, distribute burdens, and render some things invisible, and the argument here about congealed valuations agrees entirely. Espeland and Stevens analyse commensuration, the conversion of qualitative differences into common metrics. Both are synchronic, asking whether two cases can be treated as the same kind at a given moment. Recoverable invariance is diachronic, asking whether a case can be identified as the same one across an interval during which nobody was watching. Commensuration answers whether this is the same kind of thing. Recovery answers whether this is the same thing. Administrative systems need both and fail differently in each, since a system with poor commensuration produces incomparable records while a system with poor recovery produces records about nobody in particular.
Material engagement theory shares this article’s refusal to explain notation by prior cognitive achievement, and its insistence on mutual constitution among minds, materials, and practices is compatible with everything argued here. The difference is one of resolution. Flat co-constitution has no vocabulary for distinguishing a counterpart that answers back from one that does not, and that distinction generates the entire argument, since the point of a deposit is that it is nonrecursive and the danger of a deposit is that nonrecursive things enter interrecursive life and alter its trajectory without ever participating in it. A framework that levels the difference cannot say why an anchor anchors.
XV. Maintenance, Loss, and Ruin
Every deposit examined here requires someone to keep it in working order, and the labour involved is recursive labour devoted to preserving a counterpart’s nonrecursive affordances against the forces that would otherwise erode them. Clay chips, papyrus rots, ink fades, languages change, scripts fall out of use, and institutions lose the legitimacy that once made their rulings unquestionable. A deposit whose maintenance stops becomes inert rather than false.
Undeciphered scripts are ruins in the precise sense this theory gives the term, being sediment whose organising recursion has been lost, materially present and no longer capable of coordinating anyone’s life. Linear A survives in hundreds of documents that can be transliterated and not understood. Proto-Elamite, an administrative notation from Susa contemporary with archaic Mesopotamia, remains largely opaque despite a substantial corpus and a well-understood administrative context. The Indus corpus resists a century of effort. Rongorongo on Rapa Nui was still being produced within living memory of European contact and can no longer be read, because the people who could read it died within a generation of the collapse that removed the institutions sustaining them. In each case the first three conditions hold and the fourth has failed, which is the characteristic failure mode of a mark-borne system and one an interpreter-borne system never exhibits, since an interpreter-borne system loses everything at once rather than leaving legible wreckage.
Script death happens even to the most monumentally anchored systems. The last dated hieroglyphic inscription was carved at Philae at the end of the fourth century of the common era, the last demotic text a few decades later, and the Egyptian record then stood unreadable for fourteen centuries, immensely visible and entirely mute, until Champollion recovered its principles in 1822. The last dated cuneiform tablets are astronomical almanacs from around the end of the first century, written for a scholarly community in a script that had been in use for three thousand years and would shortly have no users at all. In each case the physical anchors were in excellent condition and the institution reproducing readers was not, which is why the scribal school, the copying exercise, and the curriculum belong to the technology of writing as fully as the stylus does.
The modern situation intensifies most of this. Digital records depend on continuously maintained machinery, on file formats whose interpreters must themselves be maintained, and on organisations willing to keep paying for both, and the resulting archive decays faster than parchment while presenting an appearance of permanence.
The Exchequer tallies furnish the appropriate closing image. Having served English royal finance for six centuries, they were abolished as an accounting instrument in 1826, and the accumulated sticks were kept in storage until, in October 1834, it was decided to dispose of them by burning them in the stoves beneath the House of Lords. The flues overheated, the fire spread, and the Palace of Westminster burned to the ground. The abandoned anchor consumed the institution that had abandoned it, which is a more literal demonstration of the costs of maintenance than any theory could reasonably request.
XVI. Conclusion: The Reader Removed
Writing is not a triumph of representation and should not be equated with civilisation, intelligence, or symbolic sophistication. Nonliterate societies sustain symbolic worlds of enormous complexity, and oral and performative traditions preserve exactly the mediation-rich detail that administrative systems are built to discard. What distinguishes durable notation is a particular arrangement of multisymbolization and multimateriality: the capacity to let selected distinctions remain externally recoverable beyond the living encounter, without requiring any living person to hold them in the meantime.
The real transition is therefore not from speech to writing, nor from concrete to abstract thought, nor from primitive to civilised cognition, but from a world in which recursive coordination could rely more extensively on living presence to one increasingly burdened by persistent absences: the absent creditor, the absent ancestor, the absent owner, the absent ruler, the absent witness, the harvest that has already happened, the payment that has not happened yet, the boundary established before anyone now alive was born, the obligation whose participants no longer remember its origin. Sedentism thickened the past. Notation gave absence a material presence, and once that became possible, human beings began to inhabit environments in which symbols made by people who are no longer present participate in the organisation of current life.
Across the whole of this history the deposit has never answered back, and it does not answer back now. A store that alters when it is written to is not thereby coordinating with its own ongoing life, and a system that returns results to a query anticipates nothing and addresses no one, so the most elaborate database remains nonrecursive multisymbolization of exactly the kind a notched stick already was. The categorical distinction holds where it always held. What has changed is the reader.
For five thousand years the activation of a deposit required a living being to retrieve it, interpret it, and remediate it back into a situation the record did not contain. Retrieval was the expensive step, and its expense was the reason custody conferred power. Order-independent retrieval reduced that expense enormously, and the reduction is now approaching completion, with selection among deposits increasingly performed by apparatus that has never been present at anything the records demediated. The result is demediation twice over: a record that already discarded almost everything about its referent, now selected and combined by something that cannot put any of it back. The question this raises is not whether the archive has begun to answer, since it has not and will not, but what becomes of anchoring when the recursive uptake that alone makes a deposit effective is itself deposited, and the remediating reader, who was always the point at which a mark rejoined a life, is no longer there to be trained.
