Abstract
Recursivity is the foundational concept of Living Value Theory. It does not mean a formal procedure calling itself, a mechanical feedback loop, complexity, instability, consciousness, or human reflexivity. It names the condition in which the consequences of a living being’s previous mediation alter the conditions of its subsequent mediation. A living being continually inherits what its own living has made possible, difficult, available, or necessary. This is why a wound changes movement, an immune encounter changes later response, a habit changes the cost of coordination, a relationship acquires a history, and an institution comes to act through its own accumulated records, rules, and precedents.
The article develops this claim as the prior companion to What Is the Mesocosm? If the mesocosm asks what kind of world a living being inhabits, recursivity asks what kind of being inhabits it. The answer is that a living being is a recursive being. The five mediations specify the affordances through which recursivity occurs; the five levels specify how recursively available coordination becomes; and the three types specify what kind of responsiveness characterises the counterpart. The 5 × 5 × 3 architecture is therefore not a matrix of separate concepts. It is the anatomy of living recursivity. The article concludes that life is recursive because living beings continually have to live with what their own previous living has made possible.
I. What Kind of Thing Is Alive?
The problem of life appears simple until one tries to state what is distinctive about a living process. Biology supplies a familiar inventory: metabolism, reproduction, homeostasis, growth, adaptation, cellular organisation, and evolution. Each identifies something indispensable. Yet none, alone, tells us what distinguishes life as a kind of process. A crystal can grow. A fire can consume fuel in a loose metabolic sense. A computer can reproduce information. A thermostat regulates temperature. A river responds dynamically to obstacles. A program can be recursively defined. None of these facts by itself establishes that the process is alive.
The missing question is not whether something changes or responds. It is whether its own previous coordination becomes part of the conditions under which subsequent coordination proceeds. A plant changes its growth in relation to prior exposure. An immune system responds differently after encounter. An injured animal moves differently because injury has changed what movement now costs. A person learns. A habit forms. A body ages. A relationship becomes different because of what occurred within it. A community remembers. A legal system accumulates precedent. A philosopher questions a distinction that earlier philosophy has sedimented.
Across this range, the complexity changes radically, but one structural fact persists: what has happened in living becomes consequential for what living can do next. A living being is not merely a being that undergoes processes. It is a being whose processes recursively reorganise the conditions of their own continuation. That is recursivity.
This definition does not replace the biological criteria. It explains why they belong together. Metabolism is not merely energy transfer because a living body’s metabolic history changes its later capacities. Growth is not merely increase because a growing organism modifies its future relation to support, movement, exposure, and repair. Homeostasis is not simply regulation because the continuing condition maintained is itself a consequence of prior living. Reproduction does not stand outside recursivity, because inherited forms make earlier living consequential for a later life. Each familiar criterion identifies a region in which living continuity returns upon the conditions of that continuity.
Living Value Theory therefore begins neither with consciousness nor with symbolic thought. It begins with coordination. Before a life can know, judge, decide, narrate, or communicate, it must already be holding itself together in a world that can support or frustrate that holding-together. The latest Core Principles article names this continuous process of living coordination as the starting point of LVT: life is recursive mediation in a mesocosm. This article concentrates on the second term, not in isolation, but as the dynamic principle that makes the proposition intelligible.
II. Recursion Is Not Recursivity
The first task is to clear away a terminological confusion. Mathematics and computer science commonly use recursion for an operation defined in terms of itself. A function calls itself. An iterative procedure passes its result into the next step. A recursive algorithm can traverse a tree or calculate a sequence with remarkable efficiency. None of this is what Living Value Theory means by recursivity.
Formal recursion concerns the organisation of operations. Living recursivity concerns the organisation of continuation. A program can refer to a prior state, produce an output, and terminate without anything being at stake for the procedure itself. It has no body whose continuing organisation can be altered by the result; no relation whose prior injury or trust changes what the relation can become; no dwelling whose changed availability presses on later life. Formal recursion returns to a procedure. Living recursivity returns to the conditions of continuation.
The distinction is temporal and existential. A recursive computer function may receive a prior result as an input, but nothing about the function needs to live with that result. For a living being, previous states alter what continued living can be. The difference cannot be repaired simply by building a more adaptive machine. A system may acquire elaborate feedback, memory, self-modification, and simulation. The question remains whether its prior operations become conditions of a living continuation that can go better or worse for that system. LVT calls this primary living recursivity.
This permits an important further distinction. Institutions and organisations can exhibit derivative recursive organisation insofar as living beings repeatedly take up, assess, and modify their nonrecursive material and symbolic deposits. Archives, documents, algorithms, and technical systems themselves remain nonrecursive counterparts. Their apparent recursion is enacted through the living coordination in which they are embedded. An institution does not constitute a second, nonliving kind of recursivity. Its operations matter because living beings build, maintain, interpret, and take up its deposits, which in turn reorganise the continuations of the bodies, relations, and communities coordinated through them.
This is also why recursivity cannot mean simple circular causality. Living processes do not need literally to return to earlier states. A child does not return to infancy. A wound does not return a body to the condition before injury. Learning often makes exact repetition impossible. The relevant recurrence is not repetition of an identical point. It is the continued presence of consequences. What occurred enters the next moment as changed capacity, altered relevance, revised expectation, durable trace, remembered relation, or material and symbolic deposit.
The distinction becomes especially clear in the relation between a population and a dataset. Population statistics can display repeated patterns across many lives, but its numerical regularities are generated from nonrecursive symbolic traces of processes that were living and recursive when they occurred. The dataset does not become a living population merely because it has been assembled from one. It is a stable deposit of selected past events. Statistics can analyse the deposit; it does not directly encounter the recursive present from which those deposits came.
III. Recursivity Is Not Feedback
Cybernetics provides the obvious neighbouring vocabulary. A thermostat registers a variation and changes output. A guidance system adjusts a trajectory. An automatic control system modifies a process in relation to a measured discrepancy. These are genuine analogues because they show that responsiveness need not involve consciousness, deliberation, or language. They are not, however, sufficient for recursivity.
A thermostat can keep a room within a programmed range. A more sophisticated machine might even modify its own response architecture through learning. Neither achievement is decisive. The crucial question is whether there is anything that can go better or worse for the machine as a living continuation. The thermostat does not have a lived continuation whose prior mediation becomes a condition of its later living. A closed loop, even an adaptive one, is therefore not recursivity. It remains a nonrecursive counterpart whose operations can alter living coordination because living beings have designed, maintained, and put it to use.
Living processes do this continuously. Immune exposure can alter later immune responsiveness. Muscle use changes capacity and limitation. Repeated paths become easier or harder to navigate. Pain alters avoidance. Repeated success can generate expectation; failure can provoke experimentation. Bodies develop. Relations acquire histories. A child’s earlier interaction changes what later reassurance, play, refusal, or instruction can accomplish. None of these examples requires a reflective self. They require only that a living process undergoes its own consequences.
This yields a stronger definition:
Recursivity is the capacity of a living process for the consequences of its previous mediation to alter the conditions of its subsequent mediation.
The word mediation is decisive. A process does not recurse in abstraction. It changes through some relation: through its body, another living being, the conditions of dwelling, a material deposit, or a symbolic distinction. This is why a relationship may become more fragile after a betrayal, why a body’s response to exertion can be altered by injury, and why institutional coordination can acquire derivative recursive organisation and become trapped by a rule previously deposited within it. Living history is not a record appended to an otherwise unchanged process. It is the alteration of what later coordination can be.
The definition also avoids two opposed anthropomorphisms. It does not elevate all life into miniature cognition. A plant’s growth response does not need an inner narrative to be recursively altered by earlier exposure. Nor does it reduce human reflexivity to a mechanical loop. Human beings can symbolically articulate, preserve, revise, and contest their own accumulated coordination in ways that immensely extend recursive range. There is continuity without identity. Embodied living, social relations, institutional coordination, and philosophical critique can all involve increasingly elaborate recursive processes, while archives, documents, and other symbolic deposits remain nonrecursive counterparts through which those processes are extended.
IV. Recursivity Is Not Reflexivity
The social sciences usually encounter recursive processes very late. Reflexivity, in its many forms, describes people making their identities, practices, institutions, representations, or knowledge claims available for thought. Bourdieu’s reflexive sociology, Giddens’s reflexive modernity, Beck’s institutional self-confrontation, ethnomethodology, reflexive anthropology, conceptual history, and deconstruction all identify important achievements of human life. They do not, however, identify the origin of recursivity.
Reflexivity is a spectacular human elaboration of a process already fundamental to life. A plant adjusting to light does not reflect. An animal learning a route does not need a self-concept. A body regulating blood glucose does not theorise metabolism. Yet in each case previous states alter future possibilities. The correct direction of explanation is therefore not that simple biological responsiveness is an undeveloped version of human reflexivity. It is that human reflexivity is an extraordinarily elaborated form of living recursivity.
This reversal removes a conceptual cliff that has structured much social theory. Below language, there is assumed to be biology, causation, mechanism, or instinct. Above language, there is meaning, agency, reflexivity, society, and culture. LVT rejects the divide. The being that writes a philosophical critique remains recursively embodied, relies upon other living beings, dwells among nonresponsive conditions, uses material technologies, and operates through inherited symbolic deposits. Upper-level recursivity augments rather than replaces lower-level recursivity.
The distinction also corrects an error in theories that treat self-reflection as the highest or defining human achievement. L5 reflexivity can reopen an L4 institutional stabilisation, interrogate a settled category, or revise a conceptual inheritance. But a philosopher who cannot eat, sleep, regulate bodily distress, sustain relations, or inhabit a workable environment cannot philosophise indefinitely. The capacity to take a symbolic settlement as an object depends on the prior successful coordination that allows the capacity to be exercised. The highest forms of human recursivity remain grounded in zoetic life.
This is why reflexivity should be located rather than glorified. It is neither illusion nor epiphenomenon. It is a real recursive operation in which symbolic life makes its own stabilisations available for repositioning. But it is not the foundation of living recursivity. A life can be richly recursive without language. A language can be highly reflexive while losing contact with the embodied, relational, material, and dwelling conditions that make its operation possible. The social-theoretical task is not to abandon reflexivity, but to return it to the architecture of life from which it grew.
V. Recursivity and Mediation: The Two Sides of Living Process
What would recursivity mean without mediation? Nothing very useful. A living being cannot recurse into a void. It can only recurse through relations in which previous coordination changes what later coordination can become. Recursivity names the dynamic structure. Mediation names the relational pathway through which that dynamic occurs.
The distinction can be stated compactly:

Recursivity and mediation are analytically distinguishable but ontologically inseparable. Mediation without recursivity would be mere transmission or causal passage. A stone warmed by the sun is affected, but the stone does not take the effect into a living continuation. Recursivity without mediation would be an abstract self-return occurring nowhere and through nothing. Living occurs because recursive processes are always mediated, and mediations are the concrete affordances through which recursive life can continue.
The five mediations are therefore not five additional substances placed beside recursivity. They are five great affordances of recursivity. Each expands the pathways through which a living being can register, answer, retain, repair, or transform the consequences of earlier living. Their “multi” character is not decorative. It names internal plurality and the redundancy that lets life remain responsive when one route fails.
Multisensorial embodiment is the multiplicity of sensory, metabolic, affective, proprioceptive, interoceptive, motor, and regulatory pathways through which a body registers and answers disturbance. No single signal carries embodied life. Hunger, balance, pain, heat, touch, fatigue, posture, circulation, and immune response create overlapping routes of coordination. Their plurality is a condition of resilience: a body can still orient when a particular signal is absent, muted, mistaken, or overwhelmed.
Multispecies being-with names the fact that living beings coordinate not only with conspecifics but with predators, prey, offspring, symbionts, parasites, domesticated animals, plants, microbes, and many other forms of life. Human sociality is a restricted special case. Being-with is multispecies before it is sociological. It includes relation to responsive counterparts, but responsiveness is never uniform. A child, a dog, a parasite, a patient, a prey animal, and a professional colleague each alter the field of possible response differently.
Multiversal dwelling concerns the plurality of nonresponsive orders with which life must coordinate: gravity, seasonality, terrain, daylight, temperature, atmospheric conditions, geology, hydrological cycles, and astronomical regularities. These orders are not a single inert “nature.” They vary dramatically in stability, scale, and predictability. Weather can be highly variable while remaining nonrecursive. A mountain can be nonrecursive and highly stable. The “multi” identifies the many found conditions across which a life must orient itself.
Multimateriality multiplies the durable supports through which prior coordination can alter later coordination: tools, paths, rooms, vehicles, clothes, medicines, machines, infrastructures, devices, and built environments. Materials can preserve previous work, redistribute labour, lower recurring costs, and create new dependencies. A path keeps an earlier route available. A bridge makes a former obstacle traversable. A medicine stores a history of research, manufacture, regulation, and practice in a form that can reorganise later bodily coordination.
Multisymbolization expands recursivity through language, number, image, notation, maps, music, law, money, calendars, diagrams, scientific classifications, and archives. No single symbolic system exhausts human symbolic mediation. Different systems permit different operations: a map makes spatial relation portable, a legal document stabilises obligation, a number enables comparison, an image can render a world available, and a calendar brings a possible future into present coordination. Symbolisation turns certain distinctions into deposits that can outlast their makers, return across absence, and become part of later life.
Each mediation is a distinct affordance for recursive life. Mediations do not merely classify what life encounters. They expand the ways in which life can continue responding. The five mediations give recursivity breadth.
The forthcoming mediation article supplies the sharper counterpart derivation that this article anticipates. Two mediations concern recursive counterparts: multisensorial embodiment coordinates a living being’s own selfrecursive continuation, while multispecies being-with coordinates another interrecursively responsive living being. Three mediations concern nonrecursive counterparts: multiversal dwelling coordinates found ground, multimateriality coordinates made material ground, and multisymbolization coordinates made symbolic ground. This 2 + 3 partition concerns the recursive type of the counterpart. It does not compete with the 3 + 2 evolutionary partition developed below.
VI. Why Five Mediations?
The five mediations are not an arbitrary taxonomy. The first three follow from the elementary problem of living. A living process must coordinate its own continuing organisation; it must coordinate other living beings capable of answering differently; and it must coordinate nonresponsive worldly conditions that nevertheless enable, constrain, and threaten it. Hence multisensorial embodiment, multispecies being-with, and multiversal dwelling.
These three zoetic mediations are sufficient for a complete living mesocosm. A plant, animal, or microbial community does not inhabit an incomplete world because it lacks law, writing, or money. It lives through bodily continuation, relations with other life, and conditions of dwelling. The order of derivation matters because it stops symbolic life being treated as the universal key to the world. Embodiment, being-with, and dwelling are not foundations that humans later transcend. They remain the irreducible conditions of every symbolic achievement.
The latter two mediations arise when recursive beings become capable of leaving reorganised conditions behind them. Durable material formations can preserve a prior coordination beyond its immediate moment as made nonrecursive material ground. Durable symbolic distinctions can preserve an articulation beyond the people and situation that first generated it as made nonrecursive symbolic ground. Multimateriality and multisymbolization are therefore poietic mediations: they make it possible to reconstruct the conditions of inhabitation themselves.
The asymmetry is decisive. The first three can exist without the latter two. The latter two cannot exist without living beings already coordinating through embodiment, being-with, and dwelling. Poietic mediation enormously expands what recursive life can do, but it never replaces zoetic life. A written law requires bodies able to encounter it, relations able to apply or contest it, material carriers that preserve it, and a world in which it matters. A hospital requires medicine, but also sleep, food, trust, access, care, buildings, institutions, and bodily vulnerability.
The human threshold is not simply the existence of tools or signs. Nonhuman animals construct nests, dams, paths, and social signals; many species make meaningful use of material and communicative forms. The distinctively human threshold is the sustained, open-ended, recursive coupling of multimateriality and multisymbolization. Material deposits redesign what symbolic systems can accomplish; symbolic systems redesign what material deposits can accomplish; together they continually transform embodiment, being-with, and dwelling. Human history is the accumulation of this coupling, with all its capacities for repair, amplification, domination, care, destruction, and renewal.
VII. The First Two Levels: Life Before Language
The five levels of recursivity describe how recursively available ongoing coordination becomes. They do not rank intelligence, worth, development, or consciousness. The first two are especially important because they show that recursivity does not begin with language.
At L1, living coordination proceeds without becoming separately salient. A body regulates itself. An animal follows a familiar route. A person walks down familiar stairs. A conversation unfolds without either participant monitoring every turn. L1 is therefore absorbed coordination. The ordinary condition of a successful mediation is that it does not demand explicit attention. L1 is not the absence of recursion. It is coordination not presently requiring separate recursive attention, backgrounded in the activity it sustains. In this restricted sense it is operative closure, not because recursivity has ended, but because it has settled sufficiently for life to proceed.
At L2, something becomes consequential enough to interrupt smooth coordination. Pain, hunger, an unexpected movement, a changed smell, a relationship suddenly feeling wrong, a blocked route, an unfamiliar sound, or an unexplained failure can make a previously absorbed coordination available. L2 is a felt or registered discrepancy in living. It is the minimal threshold at which a ground begins to open.
The decisive formulation is: L2 is questionability, not yet a question. There is no hidden sentence inside pain. A plant registering drought is not silently asking a linguistic question. An animal’s startle response does not contain a proposition awaiting verbal expression. L2 is the opening from which symbolic questioning may later become possible. It is the condition in which something becomes recursively available before it is named, described, interpreted, or placed in a system of reasons.
This distinction preserves the evolutionary integrity of the architecture. If L2 secretly contained propositions, L3 would add only a verbal label to an already symbolic process. But L3 introduces a new mediational possibility. It converts a recursively salient distinction into an articulated deposit that can be preserved, shared, returned to, negated, and made portable. L1 and L2 are therefore not primitive versions of symbolic life. They are the living basis from which symbolic life later develops.
L2 also explains why much of life can be deeply consequential without being immediately reportable. A person may know that something in a relationship is wrong before they can say what it is. A clinician may register a disturbance in an encounter before an available diagnosis fits it. A child may participate competently in a complex interaction without representing its structure in explicit terms. An ethnographic method that recognises only what subjects can articulate will systematically miss recursive life in its emergent, tacit, bodily, relational, and situational forms.
VIII. L3: When Recursivity Becomes Symbolically Articulable
With multisymbolization, something new occurs. A recursively registered distinction can be stabilised in symbolic form: “This hurts.” “Something is wrong.” “Why did he do that?” “Danger.” “Debt.” “God.” “Tomorrow.” At L3, recursive life operates on articulated distinctions.
The transition changes the temporal and social range of coordination. A living problem can persist beyond its immediate occurrence. It can be shared, remembered, reconsidered, compared, negated, questioned, and communicated to someone absent. The symbolic deposit becomes part of later living. A person can return to an earlier statement; a group can coordinate around a named danger; a patient can describe a pain; an institution can record a complaint; a theory can make a previously unnamed distinction available for debate.
L3 is not merely “conscious L2.” It is a new mediational possibility. The articulation does not simply reveal an already complete inner content. It makes new recursive operations possible. Once a distinction has a carrier, it can be retrieved later, carried elsewhere, compared with another distinction, or become the basis for a new relationship. Writing extends this capacity enormously because it can preserve recoverable invariance across absence, but writing is one late and costly solution among several. Human groups have long used maintained interpreters, ritual forms, names, measures, and embodied repertoires to keep distinctions actionable.
An L2 disturbance can become an L3 question, but not every L2 disturbance does. Many disappear. Many are repaired without articulation. Many are suppressed. Many remain inarticulable because no available symbolic form fits them. This has methodological and political consequences. The absence of a recognised category does not prove the absence of a real disturbance. Conversely, an available category can capture a life too quickly, making the category appear more adequate because its institutional portability is mistaken for fit.
The problem is not that symbols are artificial intrusions into an otherwise immediate life. Symbols are one of the means by which living beings extend recursive capacity. The question is whether a particular symbol returns something to the coordination it articulates or replaces that coordination with a deposit that has become more stable than the life it was meant to assist. Symbols can make a disturbance more available. They can also make it less available by forcing it into the wrong form.
IX. L4: When Symbolizations Become Grounds
L4 occurs when symbolic articulations become generalised, stabilised, and portable beyond the coordination that first generated them. A pain becomes a diagnosis. A dispute becomes law. A transaction becomes an accounting category. An observation becomes a scientific classification. A local distinction becomes doctrine. An improvised practice becomes procedure. L4 is not simply “more abstraction.” It transforms transient symbolic recursion into relatively durable ground.
This is one source of the extraordinary cumulative power of human worlds. L4 permits strangers who never met to coordinate through inherited categories, schedules, procedures, legal forms, measures, and records. A road, a building, a calendar, a professional protocol, and a national census each preserve earlier work so that later coordination need not begin again from zero. Civilisation can be described as the intergenerational accumulation of such made anchors, which redistribute recursivity rather than abolish it.
But the stability that makes L4 powerful also creates its characteristic risk. A category can survive after the situation that generated it has changed. A rule can be applied where it fits poorly. A diagnosis can replace the suffering it was designed to organise. A metric can become more stable than the life it measures. This is not a minor administrative defect. It is a recurrent ontological problem. A completed transaction is already a nonrecursive symbolic fact before a ledger records it. But when accounting expands from transactions to goodwill, care, public services, or other recursively living domains, its formal consistency does not guarantee mesocosmic fit.
The same problem appears in statistics. A dataset can attain high stability because it contains nonrecursive traces selected from past living processes. Its stability should not be mistaken for the stability of the people, relations, and conditions from which the traces were extracted. L4’s achievement is portability. Its danger is that portability can conceal the mediational work, selection, and loss through which it was made possible.
L4 is therefore simultaneously one of humanity’s greatest recursive achievements and one of its principal sources of recursive blockage. It creates the ground on which later life can act, but it must remain reopenable when its inherited forms no longer coordinate with what they organise.
X. L5: Recursing Upon Recursive Stabilisation
At L5, a symbolic stabilisation is itself made available for recursive repositioning. Genealogy, philosophy, theory, institutional critique, constitutional revision, conceptual history, deconstruction, and reflexive anthropology all work in this register. L5 asks not merely, “What is happening?” but, “Why are we organising what happens through these categories at all?”
The recursion is exceptionally deep. A symbolic system generated from prior living becomes stabilised at L4. Later living beings reopen the system and reposition themselves toward it. They can discover that an inherited category silently excludes a relevant condition; that an institution’s rule is no longer adequate; that a theory has confused a symbolic deposit with the life it represents. They can revise the ground without assuming that ground was ever unreal.
L5 does not represent evolutionary completion. It depends absolutely on L1 and L2. A philosopher who cannot sleep, eat, remain embodied, maintain relations, or inhabit a workable world cannot sustain philosophical critique indefinitely. Higher recursive capacity increases range; it does not supersede the zoetic conditions of its exercise. The most elaborate reflexivity remains dependent on a body, a relation, a dwelling, materials, and symbols that are working sufficiently well to allow reflection to occur.
The distinction matters because L5 can become a new form of overreach. Critique may expose the history of a stabilisation while failing to recognise what coordination the stabilisation still enables. Recursive opening without some return to ground produces overload. Closure without reopening produces rigidity. The practical question is never whether a world should be wholly open or wholly settled. It is how the passage between stabilisation and reopening is distributed, through what mediations, and at whose expense.
XI. The Five Levels as Derivational Architecture
The levels can now be compressed:

The dependency relation is strict. L1 and L2 can exist without L3. L3 presupposes living coordination and recursively salient difference. L4 presupposes symbolic articulation. L5 presupposes prior stabilisation. The levels therefore express depths of recursive availability, not stages of intelligence, moral worth, historical development, or consciousness.
Human beings move continuously among them. A person may walk at L1, register fatigue at L2, say “I need to rest” at L3, follow an institutional schedule at L4, and question the norms that make rest difficult at L5. Healthy living often involves returning from high-level recursion to renewed L1 coordination. The aim of a repair is not permanent attention to the repair but a world in which life can proceed again.
XII. The Three Recursive Types
The third axis of the 5 × 5 × 3 architecture specifies what kind of responsiveness characterises the counterpart with which coordination occurs. The mediations ask through what affordance recursion occurs. The levels ask how recursively available coordination has become. The types ask what kind of response is possible from the counterpart.
Nonrecursive counterparts do not alter their course because they have been engaged. Gravity does not respond to belief. The moon does not revise its orbit because it has been measured. A property line inscribed in a document does not itself negotiate. Nonrecursive does not mean static or easy to predict. Weather can be violently variable while remaining nonrecursive. A river can be dynamic, dangerous, and difficult to model without responding to the fact that a particular living being has engaged it.
Selfrecursive processes respond to their own changing state. Metabolism, pain regulation, bodily repair, learning, and self-monitoring are central cases. A living being necessarily has some selfrecursive relation to its continuing organisation because its own earlier condition becomes a condition of later coordination. Institutions can acquire derivative selfrecursive organisation when they measure and adjust their own outputs, but their capacity remains dependent on living people, material systems, and symbolic deposits.
Interrecursive relations occur when two or more recursive beings respond to each other’s responses. Conversation, courtship, conflict, parenting, teaching, care, negotiation, therapy, politics, and strategically responsive markets all belong here. Each response changes the conditions under which the other responds next. Interrecursivity generates a distinctive openness because no party is merely an object whose response can be fully specified in advance. The relationship itself has a history that enters the next interaction.
The three types are not a classification of whole entities once and for all. They are types of coordination. A person may need to coordinate with gravity nonrecursively, with their body selfrecursively, and with another person interrecursively in the same minute. The task of discernment is to identify which kind of responsiveness is relevant in a specific relation. Misidentification is costly. Treating a responsive counterpart as a nonrecursive object invites failure; treating weather as a negotiator produces another kind of failure. The architecture does not simplify the world by making everything the same. It makes plurality diagnosable.
XIII. Mixed Futurity: Why Recursive Types Matter
Real situations contain all three types at once. A medical consultation includes nonrecursive material conditions, selfrecursive bodily processes, and interrecursive patient-clinician relations. A marriage includes bodies, property, weather, houses, money, habits, memories, laws, children, symbolic promises, and continuously responsive partners. A pandemic contains viral processes, immune responses, family relations, institutional measures, housing arrangements, images of risk, and circulating classifications. No serious analysis can treat such a field as governed by one kind of futurity.
A prediction about weather does not change the weather simply by being made. A prediction about a person may change what that person does. A prediction about a market may alter the market because strategically responsive actors can act on the prediction. The point is not that interrecursive futures are unknowable or that nonrecursive futures are wholly predictable. Predictability and recursivity are different dimensions. The point is that the act of articulating a future can enter the future differently depending on the recursive type of the relation.
This is mixed futurity. A public-health forecast may not alter the pathogen directly, but it can alter behaviour, policy, access to care, household decisions, and institutional priorities. A diagnosis may not change a laboratory measurement, but it can alter how a patient is treated, how family members respond, and how the person interprets future bodily experience. A market model can identify a pattern in symbolic deposits while also becoming part of the strategic field it describes. Institutions fail when they apply governance techniques that work for nonrecursive processes to interrecursive life without noticing that rules, metrics, algorithms, and predictions become part of the interaction they seek merely to describe.
The distinction protects against a recurrent error. One need not choose between a world that is technically governable and a world that is socially constructed. The same situation can include processes that require measurement, processes that require self-maintenance, and processes that require responsive judgment. The question is always which aspect of which relation is at issue. The LVT architecture gives this differentiation a precise form.
XIV. Recursive Discernment: How Living Beings Discover What They Are Dealing With
Living beings do not begin with perfect ontological knowledge. They continually discover what responds and how. An infant learns what happens when it cries. An animal tests whether something moves, retreats, or pursues. A person learns whether another can be trusted. A clinician learns whether a body responds to treatment. A group learns whether an institution will hear, ignore, punish, or adapt to a complaint. This ongoing process is recursive discernment.
Discernment is prior to stable attribution. Only later do symbolic beings say, “This is alive,” “This person is dangerous,” “This medication works,” or “This institution is responsive.” Such statements are deposits of earlier and continuing attempts to discover what kind of coordination a counterpart requires. Recursive attribution is sedimented discernment. It can be revised when future coordination disconfirms it, but it cannot be derived from a single isolated observation.
The distinction has epistemological significance without making recursivity itself epistemic. Living does not first acquire a theory of responsiveness and then coordinate accordingly. It discovers responsiveness through continued mediation. A person can learn that a partner is sensitive to withdrawal through the consequences of withdrawal; a child can learn that a particular game includes another participant’s changing intention; a community can learn that an official category fails to organise a recurrent form of suffering. The knowledge is inseparable from the relation in which it is acquired.
This is why the most difficult relations often remain difficult long after direct interaction has ended. A former partner, a past institution, a remembered conflict, or a damaged relationship continues to demand discernment because its previous coordination still structures the conditions of later response. The task is not merely to remember correctly. It is to learn what kind of recursive world one had been living in, and what consequences that world has left for later life.
XV. Recursivity and Time: Why the Past Can Enter the Present
Recursivity is intrinsically temporal. Something has to have occurred for its consequences to alter what can happen next. The past enters present coordination through bodily modification, memory, habit, injury, learning, material deposits, symbolic deposits, and institutional sedimentation. A scar changes movement; remembered betrayal changes trust; a well-used path changes the ease of travel; a legal precedent changes what an official can now decide; an archive changes what a later reader can retrieve.
This is not a metaphorical past. It is a present condition produced by prior mediation. The past does not act as an independent agent from behind the present. It persists because a living body, relation, thing, or symbolic form has been changed, and subsequent coordination now begins from that change. The past is not gone in the sense of irrelevant; it is gone in the sense that it no longer answers back as the living present from which the trace emerged.
The future has not yet occurred and cannot enter recursively in exactly this way. Human beings partially transform this asymmetry through multisymbolization. Promises, threats, goals, budgets, calendars, forecasts, risk models, prophecies, retirement plans, and mortality tables make a possible future present as a symbolic condition of current living. A person can organise today around a future appointment; a government can act on a modelled disaster; a household can make sacrifices for a future child; a company can change its practices in anticipation of a future audit.
But the distinction must remain exact. The future itself has not acted. A present symbolic projection of a possible future has acted. This keeps the account nonteleological. A projected future can be powerful, but its power comes from its present mediation through bodies, relations, materials, and symbols. A forecast can change an institution’s behaviour because the forecast has become a current symbolic deposit, not because the future event has already imposed its will.
Writing intensifies this temporal extension. A durable record keeps a distinction actionable across absence only through a carrier, recoverable invariance, a route to retrieval, and practices or institutions capable of competent uptake. The record itself is nonrecursive; its recursive efficacy depends on a living reader or user who remediates it into a situation the record does not contain. This is why archives can organise future life without becoming autonomous historical agents. Their force lies in the ongoing relation between deposit and renewed living uptake.
XVI. Sedimentation: Why Recursive Life Produces Nonrecursive Ground
Living beings cannot recursively reconsider everything all the time. Such a condition would make coordinated life impossibly expensive. Successful recursivity therefore tends toward stabilisation. Habits, paths, tools, words, procedures, rules, buildings, institutions, and records reduce the burden of renewed recursive labour. The result of previous recursive work becomes nonrecursive ground for subsequent recursive life.
This is not the disappearance of recursivity. It is its redistribution. The deposit is nonrecursive; recursivity continues in the living beings that make, encounter, use, maintain, reinterpret, or reopen it. Someone once built the road; now thousands can use it without renegotiating the route. Someone once stabilised a diagnostic category; now clinicians can deploy it quickly. Someone learned a language; now speech proceeds largely without grammatical reflection. Someone repaired a roof; now a family can sleep without having to coordinate with rainfall each night. A stable ground is a successful deposit of earlier living labour.
The distinction between found and made ground matters here. A mountain is found. A road is made. Both may become phenomenologically “just there.” Yet the road is not ontologically identical to the mountain. It originated in prior recursive coordination and continues to depend on maintenance, interpretation, institutions, materials, and labour. What is made can become functionally backgrounded without becoming natural. The achievement of a reliable anchor is that it asks little of the later life it supports, not that it has ceased to be historical.
Habits work in the same way. A habit is not a behaviour that has become unintelligent. It is a coordination whose burden has migrated from effortful attention into the background of ordinary life. Its apparent automaticity is the achievement of recursive descent: something that once demanded monitoring has become cheap enough to sustain with little separate attention. Civilisation, on this account, is not principally a stock of objects or beliefs. It is the cumulative history of coordinations built, renewed, muted, misjudged, repaired, and inherited.
This gives a critical principle: recursive life continually produces grounds that reduce the need for renewed recursion. Such grounds make life efficient enough to continue. But every ground can become misfitted when the coordination it once served has changed. Stabilisation is necessary, and it is never finally sufficient.
XVII. Recursive Opening: When Ground Becomes Available Again
The counterpart to sedimentation is recursive opening. Something that did not presently require separate recursive attention becomes available for renewed mediation. Pain opens embodiment. Suspicion opens a relationship. A breakdown opens infrastructure. A question opens a symbolic settlement. A legal challenge opens precedent. A revolution opens institutions. Genealogy opens concepts. Ritual can schedule openings; therapy can induce them; anomaly can trigger them.
The full sequence is:
recursive mediation → stabilisation → sedimentation → muting → disturbance → opening or reopening → exploration → recoordination → resedimentation
Opening need not be linguistic. L2 is already an opening. A question at L3 is one powerful symbolic form of opening, but it is not the origin of the operation. A bodily disturbance can make a previously reliable coordination questionably available without the body or person yet possessing words for it. A relationship can feel altered before anyone can state the alteration. A familiar path can become problematic before it becomes an object of narrative or theory.
L5 can reopen an entire L4 regime. A conceptual historian may show how a category emerged, a social movement may contest an institutional classification, or a scientific anomaly may expose a stabilisation as inadequate. Such reopening is neither simply scepticism nor destruction. It is the condition under which a sedimented ground can be tested against changed coordination. The central question is not whether a matter is intrinsically open or closed. Every viable world is both, continuously, across countless grounds. The question is how access to opening is distributed, through which mediations, and at whose expense.
Recursive opening also identifies a danger. A world in which nothing can settle becomes overloaded. Every action would require permanent reassessment; no habit, trust, institution, route, or concept could function as ground. A world in which nothing can reopen becomes rigid. It can continue applying its stabilisations after they have ceased to coordinate with life. Recursive vitality requires neither permanent fluidity nor final closure. It requires a workable traffic between the two.
XVIII. Recursivity, Stability, Predictability, and Control
Recursivity must not become another fashionable synonym for complexity, emergence, fluidity, instability, or unpredictability. It is none of these. It names responsiveness to the consequences of prior mediation. Stability, predictability, and controllability are separate dimensions.

Nonrecursive does not mean stable. Weather can be nonrecursive and volatile. Recursive does not mean unstable. A marriage can be interrecursive and durable for decades. Predictability is not identical with either. A routine may be predictable because prior recursive work has sedimented into a stable practice. A complex nonrecursive system may remain difficult to predict. Controllability differs again. Human poiesis often increases controllability by producing material and symbolic anchors, but its control is never complete because the anchors themselves remain embedded in recursive life.
The distinction matters wherever institutions mistake a stable representation for a controllable living reality. A metric may yield regular output while the people measured remain interrecursively responsive to the metric. A policy may make a category predictable for administrators while creating new forms of evasive, adaptive, or resistant coordination among those governed. The correction is not to abandon measurement or control. It is to ask which recursive type is being organised, through which mediation, at what level, and with what consequences for future coordination.
XIX. Institutions as Engineering Recursive Coordination
Human interrecursive life becomes difficult at scale. Direct mutual responsiveness can coordinate an encounter, a household, or a small group. Cities, states, universities, markets, religions, and legal systems require coordination among people who cannot all respond directly to one another in real time. Institutions answer this problem by manufacturing stabilisations: schedules, rules, buildings, roles, documents, money, records, procedures, and professional routines.
Institutions are therefore made material and symbolic nonrecursive grounds through which living beings engineer recursive coordination. They make parts of interrecursive life behave more predictably by depositing prior coordination into durable forms. A timetable reduces the need to negotiate every meeting. A court record makes a prior decision portable. A professional role distributes expectation. Money enables exchange among strangers. A university calendar coordinates thousands of lives that cannot know one another personally.
But institutions never eliminate recursivity. Their nonrecursive forms require living uptake. Rules need interpretation. Documents need readers. Exceptions occur. People resist. Circumstances change. A procedure designed to simplify one relation can become an obstacle in another. A classification can become more stable than the case it is meant to organise. Institutions consequently oscillate between stabilisation and reopening. Their persistence depends not on abolishing response but on repeatedly redistributing the burden of response across people, materials, and symbols.
The history of religious orders demonstrates the point. Monastic rules, architectural enclosure, liturgical hours, bodily disciplines, economic arrangements, and systems of authority do not merely express spiritual ideals. They engineer distinctive profiles of recursive mediation. Desert withdrawal, Benedictine stabilisation, Cluniac expansion, mendicant mobility, and Jesuit organisation each redistribute dwelling, symbolic practice, being-with, material support, and temporal discipline differently. An institution is not a thing above its members. It is an ongoing attempt to stabilise a particular way of living with the recursive consequences of collective life.
XX. Why Social Theory Starts Too Late
Social theory begins with agency, structure, practice, meaning, norms, representation, subjectivity, power, reflexivity, and discourse. All are real phenomena. But all are late phenomena. They presuppose living recursive beings already coordinating bodies, other beings, dwelling conditions, material anchors, and symbolic deposits.
LVT therefore does not deny sociology, anthropology, psychology, or philosophy. It places their objects within a deeper architecture. A person does not become a fundamentally different ontological kind of being when they acquire language. The philosopher writing about Derrida remains recursively embodied, depends on other living beings, dwells in a nonresponsive cosmos, handles material technologies, and operates through inherited symbolic systems. Language and reflexivity expand the possible range of recursion; they do not explain the existence of recursivity itself.
The human sciences repeatedly treat the highest forms of human recursivity as the foundation of human existence. Meaning is taken to explain action, representation to explain world-involvement, discourse to explain power, or society to explain relation. Each move begins too late. The symbolic does not explain life. Living recursivity explains how symbolism became possible.
This reversal has practical consequences. An anthropology restricted to meaning will miss the stakes through which a life can go better or worse. A sociology restricted to social relation will have to reintroduce bodies, weather, infrastructure, food, illness, animals, and material support as “context.” A philosophy restricted to symbolic reflection risks missing the mediation that makes reflection possible. LVT begins not by adding these neglected realities to a pre-existing human world, but by identifying the recursive life through which any human world is continuously sustained.
XXI. The 5 × 5 × 3 as a Single Theory of Recursivity
The full LVT architecture is not fifteen concepts arranged in a matrix. It is a three-dimensional differentiation of living recursivity.
The five mediations ask: Through what affordance of living mediation is recursivity occurring? Multisensorial embodiment, multispecies being-with, multiversal dwelling, multimateriality, and multisymbolization identify the breadth of pathways through which prior coordination can alter later coordination.
The five levels ask: How recursively available has the coordination become? L1 names absorbed coordination; L2 felt or registered salience; L3 symbolic articulation; L4 portable stabilisation; L5 recursive repositioning of stabilisation. They identify the depth of recursive availability.
The three types ask: What kind of responsiveness characterises the counterpart? Nonrecursive, selfrecursive, and interrecursive relations identify the relational form of recursion. Nonrecursive, selfrecursive, and interrecursive do not describe substances. They describe the recursive status attributed to the counterpart in a particular coordination.
Every concrete situation can therefore be approached through three simultaneous questions:
Through which mediation is coordination occurring?
At what recursive level has that coordination become available?
With what recursive type is the counterpart being coordinated?
The architecture is not an elaboration added to the concept of recursivity. It is the anatomy of recursivity. The five mediations give recursivity breadth. The five levels give recursivity depth. The three types give recursivity relational form.
This does not mean every coordinate is occupied in every moment, or that a life can be adequately described by assigning it a single profile. Lives move among coordinates; different mediations carry different burdens; stabilisations can be reopened; and relations can be misidentified. The architecture is a way of tracing the actual organisation of recursive life without collapsing it into one privileged domain, whether biology, society, materiality, language, or consciousness.
XXII. What Is a Living Being?
Return to the opening question. A living being is not something that contains a particular substance. It is not something that represents its surroundings. It is not necessarily something conscious. It is not necessarily something capable of symbolic thought.
A living being is a process whose previous mediation changes the conditions under which its subsequent mediation proceeds. It continually inherits itself. Its body is partly the accumulated consequence of earlier living. Its relations contain histories. Its surroundings acquire relevance through prior coordination. In humans, material and symbolic deposits extend this recursive inheritance beyond individual lives and across generations.
Life is therefore never simply “in the present.” Every living moment is a present coordination conditioned by prior recursive mediation. This is why injury matters, why learning matters, why care matters, why memory matters, why habits matter, why culture matters, why institutions matter, and why history matters. They are different ways in which previous recursive life becomes part of the conditions of subsequent recursive life.
The formula can now be stated with the compression it has earned:
Life is recursive because living beings continually have to live with what their own previous living has made possible.
XXIII. Conclusion: Living With What Living Has Done
What Is the Mesocosm? and What Is Recursivity? answer two sides of the same proposition. The mesocosm is the field in which reality becomes consequential for living. Recursivity is the process through which consequences become conditions of subsequent living. Mediation joins the two.
The mesocosm is not a container in which a recursive organism sits. The recursive organism and its mesocosm continually develop together through mediation. Bodies carry earlier living forward. Relations carry histories. Dwelling supplies and withholds conditions. Materials preserve and redistribute prior work. Symbols make selected distinctions portable, criticisable, and capable of organising a future.
Three final formulations gather the argument:
A living being is a recursive being.
The 5 × 5 × 3 architecture is the anatomy of living recursivity.
A nonliving process can simply proceed. A living being must continually live with what its own proceeding has made possible. That is recursivity.
