Abstract
Living Value Theory holds that life is recursive mediation in a mesocosm. This article asks the methodological question the first three leave open: how is a mesocosm itself studied? Its answer is mesocosmography, the practice of reconstructing the organisation of living coordination from whatever makes that organisation constrainedly available.
Mesocosmography has no privileged object. A Bengali kinship obligation, a medieval guild's ordinance, and a beehive's foraging routine can each provide an entry into mesocosmographic reconstruction, despite radically different modes of access: the household or kinship field, the guild community, and the beehive are the mesocosmic fields in question, ontologically equally legitimate objects of inquiry even though they plainly differ in what evidence survives of them. What varies across cases is only the mode of access open to a mapper, and specifically whether coordination can be caught while it is still unfolding or must be reconstructed from what it left behind.
The article develops five modes of access, lived, observed, depositional, constructed-world, and prescriptive, together with comparison as a second-order operation across them, and argues that long-term ethnography's distinctive strength is synchronic: it converts absorbed coordination into symbolic deposit at unusually short interval and close range. This is not escape from sedimentation but an unusually fast and proximate way of producing it, and it inherits sedimentation's characteristic loss, the same loss ethnographers habitually mourn in their own fieldnotes. The article argues that this loss should be understood not as a failure to be minimised but as the necessary condition of mesocosmographic analysis itself.
The 5 × 5 × 3 architecture is developed as inferential discipline rather than a data-analysis grid: it identifies what kinds of coordination must be considered, what cannot be inferred from symbolic articulation alone, where recursive type can and cannot be located, and what remains invisible because a source does not preserve it. The methodological task is to reconstruct living worlds without reducing them to a researcher's data, a symbolic source, or a single privileged mode of encounter.
I. What Would It Mean to Map a Mesocosm?
To map a mesocosm is to reconstruct the patterned organisation through which recursive living becomes possible, consequential, and sustainable within a particular field of coordination. A mesocosm is not an object lying before a researcher. It includes what is obvious and what is backgrounded, what bodies have learned, what relationships carry, what infrastructures sustain, what symbols preserve, and what becomes visible only when coordination catches. The problem is therefore neither to ask people for a complete account of their world nor to catalogue everything external to them.
Mesocosmography is the systematic description of consequential coordination. Like a map, it selects without claiming to reproduce everything. It locates pathways, burdens, dependencies, boundaries, bottlenecks, and alternative routes. It applies to every mesocosm, including purely zoetic plant and animal mesocosms. L3-L5 and the poietic mediations enter only where symbolic deposits, material deposits, or higher-level articulation are actually present and consequential. The methodological object is not human culture as such, but living coordination wherever it occurs.
This holds without regard to culture, era, or species. A Bengali kinship obligation, a medieval guild's ordinance, and a beehive's foraging routine are not themselves mesocosms; they are relations and coordinations through which a mesocosm can be reconstructed. The household or kinship field within which the obligation holds, the guild community the ordinance regulates, and the beehive the routine sustains are mesocosmic fields in exactly the same sense, each a field of recursive mediation with its own mediations, levels, and stakes. What varies across cases is only the mode of access available to a mapper, and whether coordination can be caught while it is unfolding or must be reconstructed from what it left behind. The theory's reach does not vary with it.
II. Why Mesocosmography Is Methodology, Not Technique
Mesocosmography is a methodology rather than a mere technique. Interviewing, participant observation, archival research, material analysis, survey work, and textual interpretation are techniques, each able to yield particular kinds of evidence. Mesocosmography supplies the logic of inquiry that tells a researcher what these techniques should reconstruct: not an exhaustive inventory of objects or a catalogue of meanings, but the patterned organisation of consequential coordination.
The mapper is also a living participant with a history, body, relations, and dependencies; this does not make every map merely subjective, but it makes reflexive accounting of access, evidence, inference, and misfit a methodological requirement.
III. Core Ontological Constraint
Mesocosmography begins from hard ontological constraints, but the constraints are not uniform across every case. Wherever there is living coordination, multisensorial embodiment, multispecies being-with, multiversal dwelling, L1 absorbed coordination, and L2 askability must be operative in some form: these are zoetic necessities, holding for any living mesocosm whatever, human or not. In mesocosms involving human beings, multimateriality and multisymbolization must also be present, together with the possibilities of L3 articulation, L4 portable stabilisation, and L5 recursive repositioning: these are human-poietic necessities, conditional on the case rather than universal. Neither kind of constraint reveals which dwelling conditions bear the greatest burden, which relationships carry decisive stakes, what symbolic deposits organise action, or how a participant discerns a counterpart. What it tells the researcher is what kinds of coordination cannot simply be absent, and therefore where to look when evidence is partial, silent, or misleading. This is why radically incomplete evidence can nevertheless support disciplined reconstruction. Recursive discernment determines how a counterpart is mediated in a specific coordination; it does not make the counterpart a product of the observer's prior recursive cycles.
IV. The 5 × 5 × 3 as Configurational Grid, Not Checklist
The 5 × 5 × 3 framework serves as a configurational grid for mesocosmography, rather than a simple checklist. This grid is a multi-dimensional space defined by five mediations: multisensorial embodiment, multispecies being-with, multiversal dwelling, multimateriality, and multisymbolization. These are intersected by five levels of recursive depth: L1 absorbed coordination, L2 askability, L3 articulation, L4 portable stabilisation, and L5 recursive repositioning. These intersections are further modulated by three recursive types: selfrecursive, interrecursive, and nonrecursive. This architecture supports the mapping of complex counterpart structures, including the 3 + 2 evolutionary and 2 + 3 by-counterpart-type arrangements. The grid allows the researcher to identify the unique configuration of recursive mediation that defines a specific mesocosm.
V. Source Openness: What Mesocosmography Requires
Mesocosmography does not require research data; it requires constrained access to an organisation of living coordination. That access may arise through formal research, but it need not. A person may reconstruct a mesocosm from having lived within it without having observed it as research at the time. A historian may work from a letter and an account book. An archaeologist may work from a path, a wall, a tool, and a deposit. A reader may map a novel's constructed world. A scholar of religion may distinguish the narrative world, prescribed world, historical deposit, and later ritual consequences of a sacred text. An architect may map the world presupposed by a plan that was never built. A field biologist may map the mesocosm of a wolf pack or a beehive from sustained observation, exactly as an ethnographer maps a household.
The method therefore ranks neither sources nor techniques in advance. It asks what source relation is present, what it makes available, what it cannot disclose, and what inferences its limits permit. Mesocosmography is not an interdisciplinary research method with ethnography at its centre. It is a general practice of reconstructing living worlds from whatever makes their organisation constrainedly available.
VI. The 5 × 5 × 3 as Inferential Discipline
The five mediations, five recursive levels, and three counterpart types do not create seventy-five boxes into which evidence must be coded. Their function is inferential discipline. They require the mapper to consider embodiment, being-with, dwelling, material formation, and symbolization without presuming that each is equally visible in every case. They forbid the inference that symbolic articulation by itself exhausts a mesocosm. They distinguish a living act of discernment from a nonrecursive symbolic or material deposit. They locate recursive type in a specific counterpart relation rather than in a mediation as such.
This architecture works equally for remembered experience, fiction, ritual prescription, archaeological deposits, and field observation, human or otherwise. It does not tell a mapper what a particular mesocosm was; it tells the mapper which claims are necessary, constrained, probable, or unsupported. Its strength is not exhaustiveness but disciplined incompleteness.
Necessary inference is possible in the first place because the architecture is ontological rather than merely empirical. For an archaeological human settlement, the absence of textual evidence for embodiment does not make embodiment hypothetical: human beings had bodies. Nor does the absence of surviving language mean multisymbolization was absent, since a human settlement's mesocosm necessarily included symbolic coordination of some kind. What remains unknown is that coordination's particular organisation, content, salience, and historical trajectory, not whether it existed at all.
VII. Two Kinds of Access: Synchronic and Deposited
Every primary mode of access to a mesocosm falls into one of two temporal relations to sedimentation. In lived and observed access, a mapper, whether a participant, a fieldworker, or a naturalist, is present while coordination is still unfolding, before it has settled into a deposit that can be reread and argued over. In depositional, constructed-world, and prescriptive access, the mapper necessarily works from something that has already sedimented: a trace, a text, or a plan. Comparison is not a third relation alongside these. It is a second-order operation that can relate any combination of synchronic and deposited access to one another, and it inherits its evidential status from whichever cases it relates rather than establishing a temporal relation of its own. This is a real distinction between the primary modes, but it is a distinction in when access occurs relative to sedimentation, not a distinction in depth, truth, or privilege.
The distinction cuts across every boundary that ordinary usage draws around ethnography. A labour historian sitting in a factory as a strike unfolds has synchronic access in exactly the sense an anthropologist does. A field biologist recording a wolf pack's hunting coordination, or an apiarist tracking a colony's foraging routes, has synchronic access to a mesocosm that involves no human symbolic articulation at all. What makes lived and observed access distinctive is not their object, human society, contemporary life, but their timing: they alone can register absorbed coordination before anyone has needed to put it into words.
Depositional, constructed-world, and prescriptive access are not diminished versions of synchronic presence. They work from what has already survived, been made, or been prescribed, and they can disclose configurations, presuppositions, and long-term consequences that synchronic presence cannot reach on its own. No mode is a fallback for another. Each answers a different question about a mesocosm's organisation, and a rigorous mesocosmography specifies, for every claim, which of the two relations produced it, and, where comparison is involved, which cases were related and on what evidential footing.
VIII. Lived Mesocosmography
Lived mesocosmography begins with participation that was not originally organised as research. Ordinary participation can remain extensively at L1: a household, workplace, friendship, illness, school, migration, religious life, or neighbourhood may be lived for years without being converted into notes or categories. Later a snag, comparison, loss, question, or theoretical development can reopen sedimented competence. The sequence is living, sedimentation, later recursive opening, reconstruction.
This is a distinct access relation, not second-rate ethnography without fieldnotes. Formal observation can convert tacit coordination prematurely into researcher-oriented L3 categories. Later reopening can sometimes recover what systematic data collection would have altered: what did not need to be said while it worked, who carried burdens without naming them, and which dependencies were visible only after they changed. Lived access is never complete or innocent, and it is not for that reason epistemically inferior.
IX. Observed Access and the Case of Ethnography
Observed access includes ethnography, participant observation, interviews, experiments, and deliberate fieldwork, together with their non-human counterparts: a naturalist's transect, an ethologist's focal-animal sampling, an apiarist's hive log. What these share, and what distinguishes them from depositional, constructed-world, and prescriptive access, is that a mapper is present while coordination is still unfolding, before it has settled into a deposit.
Long-term ethnography is one especially clear case of this. Sustained participation can reduce a newcomer's L2 and L3 burden: routes, gestures, timing, materials, relations, and symbolic distinctions can become partially absorbed before they are ever articulated for a reader. But this is a feature of synchronic presence, available in principle wherever coordination can be observed in progress, human or otherwise, in any period that admits an observer. It is not evidence that fieldwork occupies a privileged position among the modes of access, and it is not evidence that mesocosmography is a study of contemporary human societies in particular.
Unfolding coordination cannot become a durable object of mesocosmographic analysis without some act of symbolic articulation or deposition, which is to say something already at L3. A fieldworker can certainly notice, compare, reason, and articulate while participating; what requires symbolic stabilisation is not thought itself but sustained, communicable, revisable scholarly analysis, the kind that can be reread, checked, and argued over after the encounter has ended. The ethnographer does not escape this requirement by being present. Fieldnotes are the ethnographer's own labour of sedimentation, performed in real time on coordination that would otherwise have stayed absorbed. What long-term participation buys is not access to life before it needs a deposit, but the capacity to produce that deposit from within partial participation, at short interval and close range, rather than from a letter, an account book, or a much later act of memory. This is a genuine advantage. It is an advantage of speed and proximity in sedimentation, not an exemption from it.
Ethnographers habitually describe this process as a loss, and rightly so. What a page of fieldnotes preserves of an afternoon's participation is a thin symbolic residue of what was actually lived: the texture, the fatigue, the half-registered exchange of glances, the smell of a kitchen, all the L1 and L2 material that never crossed the threshold into articulation because it did not need to while it worked. The lament is accurate. L3 sedimentation, however skilfully written, discards far more than it keeps.
But the emphasis should shift. This loss is not a failure of method to be minimised until it disappears; it is the necessary condition of the possibility of mesocosmographic analysis itself. A mapper cannot argue with, compare, revise, or teach an unarticulated afternoon. Only the deposit, thin as it is, can be reread, checked against other evidence, and built into an account that outlasts the encounter that produced it. The fieldnote's thinness is not a defect measured against the richness it replaced. It is what makes the richness available to analysis at all, at the cost of everything analysis cannot use. The same trade is made by the diarist, the letter-writer, and the archivist, only more slowly and at greater remove. What a fieldnote never records because it did not need saying while it worked is exactly as invisible as what an archive never preserved, a point developed further below.
X. Depositional Access
Depositional access works from nonrecursive remains: architecture, tools, roads, landscapes, files, accounts, letters, images, classifications, and institutional records. Such deposits can constrain reconstruction because they presuppose particular bodies, materials, relations, and forms of dwelling in order to have mattered. They do not preserve the living world intact, and they must not be mistaken for agents, memories, or complete representations.
The absence of a symbolic trace establishes neither absence nor insignificance. L1 coordination is often least likely to be articulated precisely because it did not require separate attention while it worked. Depositional mesocosmography distinguishes direct observation, material deposit, symbolic deposit, architectural necessity, constrained inference, and what remains unknown.
XI. Constructed-World Access
Fiction, mythology, film, painting, games, and other symbolic works can construct mesocosmic worlds, though not mesocosms in the same ontological sense as the living world of their readers or author: a novel is a nonrecursive symbolic deposit, not a form of life. A mesocosmography of Middlemarch need not ask only which Victorian coordination surrounded the novel's production or reception. It can map the world the novel constructs: embodied subjects, marriages, houses, roads, money, illness, inheritance, reputation, weather, institutions, and futures organised into a pattern of consequential coordination.
Dorothea and Casaubon are not living beings, and the novel is not a living organism. A constructed-world mesocosmography reconstructs the organisation of living coordination that a symbolic work makes available, not the coordination of actual recursive beings. The question is not whether the fictional characters literally recurse. It is how a symbolic work constructs plausible, implausible, generous, cramped, or contradictory conditions under which its persons, places, materials, and relations matter.
The same distinction lets constructed-world access reach further than realist fiction. A siren in the Odyssey answers to no creature in the actual cosmos, yet it becomes mesocosmically intelligible only because the poem gives it a body, a place, other beings to act upon, and, decisively, a danger that operates through multisymbolization: song capable of reorganising a hearer's recursive conduct. A being can violate every expectation of the actual world and remain constrained by the architecture of living coordination. What it cannot do is become intelligible as a living counterpart while corresponding to nothing in embodiment, relation, dwelling, or recursive consequence at all.
XII. Prescriptive Access
Laws, ritual manuals, medical guidelines, engineering specifications, architectural plans, and utopian programmes prescribe worlds rather than simply describing them. Their mesocosmographic interest lies in the coordination they demand, enable, forbid, or fail to anticipate. An unrealised plan can be particularly revealing because it exposes the presuppositions a projection tries to impose before living correction has occurred.
Prescriptive sources are nonrecursive symbolic deposits. They become consequential only through living uptake, institutions, materials, bodies, and places. A ritual manual may prescribe a mesocosm; a law may stabilise a particular relation; an architectural plan may anticipate dwelling. None guarantees that the prescribed world will become lived coordination.
XIII. Religious Texts as Multiple Mesocosmographic Objects
A religious text can be a constructed narrative world, a prescription for ritual and ethical coordination, a historical symbolic deposit, and a later consequential source within living mesocosms. These are not grades of evidence on a single scale. They are different relations between a source and a mesocosm. Genesis can construct a world; a liturgical manual can prescribe one; a manuscript can survive from an earlier coordination; and later reading, ritual, institution, and controversy can make the text consequential in new worlds.
The mapper must specify which object is being reconstructed. This avoids reducing religion to belief statements or treating a text merely as defective historical evidence. It also makes visible how a nonrecursive symbolic deposit can be taken up differently across living contexts without itself becoming a recursive agent.
XIV. Images, Artworks, and the Evidence of Arrangement
An artwork is a nonrecursive material and often symbolic deposit. It neither selfrecurses nor needs to be decoded into a total symbolic cipher. Its mesocosmographic value may lie in arrangement: bodies, dogs, clothing, oranges, rooms, architecture, materials, gestures, and spatial relations can constrain what kinds of availability, intimacy, hierarchy, wealth, or inhabitability a constructed or represented world makes plausible.
Art therefore provides both constructed-world and depositional access. A painting may articulate a world; it may also survive as a material object produced within another. Good mesocosmography keeps these objects distinct while allowing that they can overlap.
XV. Comparison as a Second-Order Operation
Comparison is not a sixth mode of access alongside lived, observed, depositional, constructed-world, and prescriptive access; it is a second-order operation performed across any combination of them, and it inherits its evidential standing from whichever modes supplied the cases being related. Comparison does not flatten cases into variables; it asks whether different worlds organise embodiment, responsive others, dwelling, materials, and symbolic deposits in analogous or contrasting ways, and what evidence allows that claim.
The point is not to identify a universal model that replaces cases; it is to make differences in coordination, burden, stakes, sedimentation, and fit more legible. Comparison becomes strong when it preserves differences in source relation and evidential limit, including whether the compared cases were reached synchronically or through deposit.
XVI. The Da Hakt Principle: Find Where Coordination Snags
Successful L1 coordination often hides its own architecture. Bodies move, bridges are crossed, relationships hold, routines work, and symbols mean without demanding separate attention. The expression da hakt's, that is where it catches, names this methodological opportunity: a snag is the transition in which an absorbed coordination becomes askable at L2. Pain can reveal embodiment; conflict can reveal being-with; flooding can reveal dwelling; breakdown can reveal infrastructure; misunderstanding can reveal symbolic deposit; institutional failure can reveal an L4 stabilisation.
A snag is not a necessary precursor to L5; its sequence is open, running from L1 coordination through L2 snag to possible L3 articulation, possible L4 stabilisation, possible L5 repositioning, and recoordination. Many snags resolve without L3. Many L3 articulations should never become L4 institutions. Successful repair often returns much activity toward L1. Mesocosmography follows the snag backward to the dependencies it reveals and forward to the attempted remediation.
XVII. Snags as Windows Onto Muted Coordination
Muting coordination is the ordinary success of coordination that no longer requires separate recursive attention and settles into L1, not a persistent L2 failure. The healthy body, reliable relationship, working bridge, and familiar institutional routine are muted precisely because they are carrying life without becoming problems to it.
This is why snags are diagnostically rich. They reveal what successful muting had concealed and what depended upon it. The mesocosmographer studies both what people articulate and what becomes visible only when it stops working. A snag exposes not merely a mechanism, but the stakes that mechanism had been sustaining.
XVIII. Stakes as the Guide to Selection
A mesocosm contains potentially infinite detail. Mesocosmography does not record everything. It follows stakes: what depends upon coordination succeeding or failing, who depends upon it, what happens if it fails, who bears the cost, and which coordination can be substituted. Stakes may concern embodiment, relationships, dwelling, material access, symbolic recognition, or any combination.
This prevents total description. A decorative stone and a concealed water pipe can occupy the same setting while differing radically in mesocosmic relevance. Stakes direct attention toward load-bearing coordination, uneven dependency, and failures that cascade across mediations.
XIX. Recursive Relevance as a Methodological Variable
Recursive relevance concerns how much present living coordination depends upon a particular counterpart or relation. It is dynamic. A person can become newly relevant through illness or care; a bridge through closure; a pathogen through epidemic spread; a legal category through eligibility. Other relations may remain vital while becoming symbolically invisible.
Mesocosmography maps relevance trajectories: what was central, what became background, what returned, what became artificially salient through measurement, and what remained consequential without being talked about. Together with the stakes it serves, recursive relevance operationalises the two questions the mesocosm article poses for any mesocosmography: how a world is articulated, and what is at stake in the way it is organised. This tracks changing worlds without reducing change to changing beliefs.
XX. Recursive Discernment as Data
Recursive discernment is empirical data for mesocosmographic inquiry. The researcher asks how participants differentiate their own living continuation, other responsive beings, found ground, made material ground, and symbolic deposits. The relevant evidence lies in the consequences of these discernments, in practice, repair, avoidance, address, classification, and conflict. A symbolic deposit may organise such discernment, but it remains nonrecursive. The data yielded by discernment captures transitions such as the movement from L1 absorbed coordination to L2 askability, and it keeps the investigation tethered to living processes rather than static objects alone.
XXI. Mapping Recursive Burden
Power can be mapped through recursive burden. The question is not whether there are selfrecursive, interrecursive, or nonrecursive mediations; recursive type describes the counterpart in a specific coordination. The methodological questions are: who gets stable ground? Who must monitor, explain, translate, anticipate, and repair? Who enjoys L1 because someone else is continually kept at L2 or L3?
Poor infrastructure forces users to monitor what better-maintained conditions allow others to ignore. A functioning institution for one group can be a permanently snagging mesocosm for another. Recursive burden makes power observable as the unequal distribution of the work required to maintain coordination.
XXII. Mapping Sedimentation and Opening
Sedimentation occurs across mediations and levels. A bodily habit can sediment, a path can sediment materially, a word can sediment symbolically, and an institutional classification can sediment at L4. Mesocosmography asks what has settled, through which mediation, what no longer looks made, and what makes a sedimented arrangement available again.
Opening also occurs across the architecture. L2 is already a minimal opening when a previously absorbed coordination becomes askable. L3 can open a matter symbolically. L5 can reposition an L4 stabilisation. An anomaly, question, ritual, conflict, maintenance failure, or political action can each alter what becomes askable. The temporal map is not a ladder but a sequence of settlement, muting, disturbance, opening, and recoordination.
XXIII. Modes of Mesocosmographic Access
The five modes introduced above divide, as section VII established, into two temporal relations to sedimentation, but neither the division nor the plurality implies ranking. Lived access arises from participation, memory, ordinary involvement, and practical competence. Observed access arises from deliberate fieldwork, interviews, participant observation, and experiment, human or non-human. Depositional access arises from archives, material remains, architecture, landscapes, records, and institutional residues. Constructed-world access arises from fiction, mythology, scripture, film, painting, and games. Prescriptive access arises from ritual manuals, laws, protocols, medical guidelines, and plans. Comparison is not a sixth item in this list; it is the second-order operation, discussed in section XV, that relates any combination of these.
These modes are neither mutually exclusive nor simply ranked. A Bible may be constructed-world material, historical deposit, ritual prescription, and a source taken up within later mesocosms. The relevant question is always which relation is being analysed, what it enables one to reconstruct, and what it leaves unavailable.
XXIV. What the 5 × 5 × 3 Lets Us Infer
The 5 × 5 × 3 does not predict a mesocosm's future trajectory, diagnose terminal stagnation, or authorise deterministic claims across mediations. It disciplines inference at two levels before constrained or probabilistic reconstruction ever begins. Zoetic necessary inference identifies what must have been operative in any living case whatever: that a population was embodied, coordinated dwelling, and operated at least L1 and L2. Human-poietic necessary inference identifies what must additionally have been operative wherever the case involves human beings: that multimateriality and multisymbolization were present in some form, with the possibilities of L3, L4, and L5 available to the population in question. Constrained inference identifies forms strongly implied by surviving coordination. Probabilistic inference identifies a reconstruction better supported than alternatives. Unsupported speculation identifies claims that neither trace nor architectural necessity justifies.
The ontology therefore enables inference without completing it. It is a source of methodological discipline, not a machine for prediction.
XXV. Negative Evidence and Missing Traces
The same limit applies to fieldnotes as to archives, as section IX has already shown: what mattered most reliably may have been least articulated, whether the deposit was made in an afternoon or assembled across a century. Missing traces do not demonstrate absence, failure of L4 stabilisation, or insignificance. They may simply have disappeared. More importantly, L1 coordination is systematically unlikely to leave symbolic traces because it did not require articulation while it worked.
Some absences are evidentially real while being ontologically impossible as absences from the mesocosm itself. There may be no surviving evidence of how a prehistoric settlement's inhabitants articulated kinship, but there cannot have been a human mesocosm containing literally no multisymbolization, given the human-poietic necessities set out above. The mapper cannot infer what was said. The mapper can infer that symbolic coordination of some kind occurred, and can hold that necessary inference sharply apart from the unsupported speculation of guessing its content.
Archives therefore overrepresent articulation, conflict, administration, exception, and durable symbolic deposits. Mesocosmography corrects this survival bias by distinguishing absent evidence from evidence of absence and by reconstructing the embodied, relational, and dwelling conditions presupposed by what did survive.
XXVI. Distinguishing Mesocosmography from Holism and Systems Theory
Mesocosmography departs from traditional holism by rejecting the assumption of a preordained or closed totality. Where holism seeks to understand the whole as a singular entity that transcends its parts, mesocosmography treats the mesocosm as a dynamic site of recursive mediation: life is defined not by its boundary as a whole, but by the continuous process of recursive mediation within it. The mesocosm is not a container but a relational field generated through the five mediations. The researcher does not look for a totalising unity, but for the patterns of recursive discernment that determine how these mediations are structured and sustained.
Mesocosmography must similarly be distinguished from systems theory. Systems approaches can describe components, input, output, and feedback, but they do not by themselves distinguish primary living recursivity from nonrecursive counterparts. Mesocosmography begins with living continuation, differentiates selfrecursive and interrecursive coordination from nonrecursive ground, distinguishes found from made ground, and locates symbolic deposits as nonrecursive products of earlier articulation. A system can exist without anything mattering to it. A mesocosm cannot, because its organisation is consequential for living processes that can go better or worse.
XXVII. Distinguishing Mesocosmography from Phenomenology
Mesocosmography does not reduce a mesocosm to the experience of a conscious subject. Multisensorial embodiment is indispensable, but it is only one mediation. The method also reconstructs responsive others, nonrecursive found and made ground, symbolic deposits, and the relations through which they become consequential. Material environments do not need agency to constrain coordination; their resistance, affordance, durability, location, and temporal viscosity are enough.
Phenomenology can contribute a mode of lived or observed access. Mesocosmography adds a stronger question of inferential relation: what organisation of living coordination becomes constrainedly available through this experience, and what remains unavailable because it is not preserved by the source?
XXVIII. Distinguishing Mesocosmography from Representation-Centred Ethnography
Mesocosmography offers an alternative to representation-centred ethnography, the tradition that treats cultural life chiefly as a body of symbols, texts, and meanings to be read. Multisymbolization is one of five mediations, and within the levels it typically achieves L4 portable stabilisation only after L1, L2, and L3 have done their work. Representation-centred approaches tend to begin already at the symbolic surface, and so they risk mistaking a stabilised deposit for the coordination it was drawn from. A mesocosmography begins instead with the pre-reflective mediations of embodiment, being-with, dwelling, and materiality, and treats multisymbolization as one mediation among five rather than the ground on which the others depend.
This is not a claim that symbols are secondary or dispensable; it is a claim about method. An account built only from what a symbol says will miss the L1 coordination it presupposes, the L2 disturbances it may or may not resolve, and the L5 repositionings through which an established symbolic order can be challenged by mediations it never articulated. A hospital's classifications matter, but they do not exhaust its coordination of bodies, equipment, routes, and kinship support. Mesocosmography treats symbolic deposits as nonrecursive products of prior articulation, consequential and real, but never as substitutes for the coordination that generated them.
XXIX. A Practical Workflow: Begin with an Available Object
Mesocosmography begins not with compulsory immersion but with an available object: a lived memory, snag, novel, ritual, image, plan, archive, artefact, field encounter, or comparison. First specify the object and its temporal relation to sedimentation: is this synchronic access to coordination still unfolding, or access to something that has already settled? Then specify the mode of access more precisely: is the task to reconstruct a lived world, a constructed world, a prescribed world, a historical coordination, or a later uptake of a deposit? Second, specify the stakes: what depends upon the coordination succeeding or failing?
Third, use the 5 × 5 × 3 as inferential discipline. Consider each mediation without presuming identical visibility; distinguish living discernment from nonrecursive ground and deposits; identify which levels are actually relevant; and label every claim as direct, necessary, constrained, probable, or unsupported. A snag can be an unusually productive window because it reveals muted dependency, but it is never a requirement.
XXX. A Practical Workflow: Reconstruct, Test, and Limit
Reconstruct the pattern of coordination the source makes available. Ask what has sedimented, who carries recursive burden, what becomes relevant, what forms of fit or misfit are implied, and what material, social, symbolic, or dwelling conditions are presupposed. Then test the reconstruction against counterevidence and against the limits of the access mode. What would have to be otherwise for the reconstruction to fail? What remains unknown? What cannot be responsibly inferred?
The result is a constrained account that can be reopened when new access, evidence, comparison, or lived consequence becomes available, not a final map. Its standard is neither comprehensive data nor immersive proximity, but fit between claim, source relation, inference, and the organisation of coordination reconstructed.
XXXI. Criteria for a Good Mesocosmography
A rigorous mesocosmography does not capture a totality; it captures the mediations relevant to a case without forcing equal attention to each, and it resists flattening the five mediations into parallel variables. Multisensorial embodiment, multispecies being-with, multiversal dwelling, multimateriality, and multisymbolization are layered through recursive discernment, not laid out side by side, and a map that treats them as a checklist to be filled in equally has already lost the architecture it claims to use. A strong map distinguishes counterpart types correctly, recovers relevant background L1 coordination rather than only explicit discourse, identifies genuine L2 snags, separates participants' articulations from the wider stakes they address, and traces found and made ground. It marks direct evidence, constrained inference, probabilistic reconstruction, and what remains unknown, and for each it specifies whether access was synchronic or deposited.
The levels are not a developmental sequence through which every mesocosm should progress. Many disturbances resolve without L3; many L3 articulations should never become L4; most L4 stabilisations need no L5 repositioning most of the time. A good mesocosmography identifies the levels actually relevant to the case, shows who bears recursive burden, explains characteristic failures, and describes whether coordination is repaired, transformed, or abandoned. Its ultimate criterion is mesocosmic fit: does it return a recognisable and explanatorily useful account of how the life actually works?
The final criterion is accurate identification of counterpart types in specific coordination. A mesocosmographer distinguishes a living being's selfrecursive continuation, interrecursive relations with responsive others, and nonrecursive found, made, and symbolic ground. The map must not label a mediation itself selfrecursive, interrecursive, or nonrecursive. It must reveal the underlying counterpart structures, the 3 + 2 evolutionary architecture and the 2 + 3 architecture by counterpart type. These distinctions make a mesocosmography a reliable account of how living value is coordinated rather than a general vocabulary applied indiscriminately.
XXXII. Conclusion: What Becomes Available
Mesocosmography is a general practice of reconstructing the organisation of living worlds from whatever makes that organisation constrainedly available. It is not a privileged research technique, a synonym for ethnography, or a data-analysis grid. It can work through lived experience, observation, deposits, constructed worlds, prescriptions, and comparisons, provided that each claim remains proportionate to its source relation.
The mesocosm does not reveal itself only where it catches, although snags are privileged windows onto coordination that had become muted through success. Successful coordination can also become available through memory, comparison, craft, art, ritual, narrative, and careful reconstruction of what a deposit presupposes. Recursive reopening is one possibility within living recursivity, not the essence of life.
Nor does the mesocosm reveal itself only to whoever is present while it unfolds. The ethnographer's fieldnote, the historian's letter, the archaeologist's wall, and the naturalist's log are four instances of the same act: recursive life converting some fraction of what it has coordinated into a deposit that can outlast the coordination itself. Each instance loses almost everything it touches. Each is, for exactly that reason, the only thing a mesocosmography can be built from.
The method's radicalism lies in this double discipline: source openness without source indifference. Any source may make some aspect of a living world available. No source makes the whole world transparent. The task is to reconstruct what it constrains, refuse what it cannot justify, and keep the map open to the consequences of further access.
