Articulation, deposit, and three types of fit
Abstract
The ordinary question, what does this symbol mean, starts too late. It presupposes that a symbol is already present, already distinct, already available for interpretation, and leaves unasked what living coordination had to become before a distinction could acquire a portable form. Living Value Theory begins earlier, from the claim that life is recursive mediation in a mesocosm: living beings continuously coordinate with bodies, other beings, dwelling, material deposits, and symbolic deposits in order to sustain a world that remains livable.1 Symbols are neither the substance of that world nor a detachable superstructure floating above it. They are one late, historically produced capacity within it. They articulate distinctions, preserve them across absence, make prior coordination available to later parties, reorganise attention, construct institutions, enable calculation, and open or close practical futures. They can also compress living differences into categories, redistribute who has authority to say what is happening, manufacture misalignment, and turn a record of a life into a substitute for the life recorded.
This article gives a systematic account of what symbols do. It begins with the distinction between recursive living coordination and nonrecursive symbolic deposits. It then traces the movement from felt salience to articulation, from articulation to L4 stabilisation, and from stabilisation to institutions, measures, artworks, archives, and diagnostic regimes. The central claim is that symbols coordinate as well as represent: they make distinctions durable, portable, inspectable, contestable, and governable. Whether they serve or damage life turns on the different relations of fit they establish: cosmic, mesocosmic, and intersymbolic. The article closes with a discipline of symbolic responsibility, the requirement that symbols make living coordination more available without claiming to replace it.
I. Begin before the symbol
Living Value Theory begins from an intentionally disorienting reversal. Living beings do not first know, judge, choose, represent, and then act. Before a body names its condition, before two people describe their relation, before an institution classifies a case, coordination is already under way. A body moves with greater or lesser ease; a room is more or less habitable; a relationship holds or strains; a path is or is not available. What is first is an ongoing process of keeping a world going, prior to any proposition about that world.1
This matters for symbols because the inherited vocabulary of representation usually begins at the wrong point. It imagines a ready-made subject facing a ready-made object and then adding a sign between them: a word, image, number, diagram, or category appearing as a third thing that stands for one thing to another. Living Value Theory does not deny that symbols can stand for something. Standing-for is insufficient, however, to describe what symbols are doing, because the standing relation itself takes place inside a field of embodiment, being-with, dwelling, multimateriality, and multisymbolization. Its importance depends on a prior question: what coordination becomes possible, easier, more stable, or more damaging when this symbolic form is introduced?1
The distinction concerns the order in which things become possible, not a rhetorical preference for action over meaning. A child can recoil before a sharp sound, a patient can feel that something is wrong, and two people can stop speaking comfortably to one another, all before any of these events acquire a name. At L1, coordination proceeds without becoming separately salient. At L2, a disturbance, discrepancy, attraction, or unsettlement becomes felt. Neither level contains an unspoken sentence waiting to be extracted. L2 is questionability, not yet a question: the condition from which a question may arise, rather than a defective version of an articulated proposition.1 To treat it as hidden language allows a later symbol to colonise the very experience whose emergence made symbolisation necessary.
That is why the analysis turns repeatedly from meaning to stakes. An account that asks only what a ritual, symptom, category, image, or number means may produce an elegant reading while missing what is being held together, what is failing, and who bears the cost of failure. The alternative question, what is at stake here, returns analysis to the continuance of coordination without abolishing interpretation. It gives interpretation a task and a limit: symbolic work answers to the living coordination it claims to describe, guide, or repair.2
Symbols arrive late, and lateness makes their power more specific rather than diminishing it. A symbol is an achievement of poiesis: a recursive process deposits something of itself in a stable, nonrecursive form that can persist beyond the interaction in which it was produced.1 The sequence runs from recursive multisymbolization, the living activity of articulating and depositing, to the nonrecursive symbolic form or deposit that results, to a subsequent recursive uptake when someone encounters, reads, or acts on it again. The shorthand that follows, that symbols do this or that, should be read against this sequence rather than as a claim that a deposit itself recurses. A spoken warning, a name, an image, an equation, a diagnosis, a written law, a score on a wearable device, a painted dog, and a national statistic are not the same kind of thing, though each can allow a distinction to travel beyond the moment in which it first mattered. Each can reorganise a future coordination. Each can become a ground that later people encounter as though it had simply been there all along.
Symbols matter because they alter the temporal architecture of coordination. They make some distinctions retrievable after absence, death, distance, delay, or institutional turnover. The same capacity can harden a provisional articulation into a governing category, turn an encounter into a record, and allow a record to speak with more authority than the living relation that produced it. The question of symbols is a question of inheritance, power, and care as much as it is a semiotic or epistemological one.
II. From salience to articulation
Symbols do not begin by representing an already articulated world. Their first work is to allow a distinction that has become salient in living coordination to take form. A person says, this hurts, something is off, I cannot do this, look out, or that matters. These utterances do not normally arrive as detached descriptions; they participate directly in the coordination they name. The shout of fire in a burning building intervenes in evacuation before it functions as a statement awaiting assessment for truth value. A promise creates a new relation of expectation among the people who take it up, rather than merely reporting an intention. A name enables that person to be addressed, remembered, summoned, excluded, honoured, or held accountable across absence, beyond simply labelling them.1
Living Value Theory distinguishes three symbolic modes. In coordination mode, a symbol participates directly in the situation it names. In reference-to-absence mode, it makes something not presently available matter to current coordination, as in memory, narrative, description, or most ordinary discourse. In re-presentation mode, it claims to make present again what is absent, lost, imagined, or never directly encountered, as in ritual, art, and theory.1 A single symbolic act may operate in more than one mode at once, which prevents distinct practical operations from collapsing into a generic category called meaning.
This is where an LVT account diverges sharply from theories that make semiosis the basic fact of life. The critique of Peircean biosemiotics argues that icon, index, and symbol are not neutral logical primitives applicable without remainder to all living processes; they carry anthropocentric assumptions about interpreters, discrete agents, sensory access, and purposive uptake. Without a robust null category, a theory of universal semiosis risks treating every biological variation as a sign, losing thereby the power to say when no symbolic operation is occurring at all.3 Living Value Theory begins instead with recursive mediation. Living beings can coordinate, respond, repair, and sustain themselves without making symbols. Zoetic life requires recursive embodiment and being-with within a found, nonrecursive dwelling; multimateriality and multisymbolization are the later poietic mediations.1
This distinction is conceptually protective. If every living process is a text, the difference between a plant's ongoing organisation and a person's written testimony becomes one of degree rather than kind, a symbolic annexation of nonhuman life rather than an increase in respect for it. It makes the nonlinguistic world available only by treating it as language in disguise. The two rules of the theory of symbolic fit oppose this move: nonlinguistic coordination contains no hidden sentences, and no master symbolic system exists into which every coordination must be translated before it can count.4
The first rule preserves the integrity of L1 and L2. A bodily disturbance may demand attention without containing a proposition. A baby's cry, a dog's hesitation, a changing weather front, or the silent wrongness of a room are not necessarily messages in a code; they may be conditions to which a living being must attune itself. Symbolisation can follow that attunement, but it can also jump ahead of it. The moment a clinical category, pedagogical label, political identity, or analytic term appears, it can make the earlier disturbance look as though it had always already been asking for that one name. The danger runs deeper than semantic inaccuracy: it forecloses further discernment.
The second rule preserves plurality among symbols themselves. No single vocabulary, scientific, clinical, theological, economic, legal, or political, can serve as the universal currency for all other forms of articulation. This does not mean that all vocabularies are equally good, or that translation is impossible. Translation is an achievement with costs, remainders, and power relations: what one system can preserve, another cannot yet express. Responsible symbolisation works to keep the remainder in view rather than to abolish it.
III. How a symbol becomes a ground
To understand what symbols do, articulation must be distinguished from a stabilised symbolic ground. L3 is the level at which something becomes articulable for a particular interaction: this pain, this promise, this danger, this discrepancy. L4 begins when such articulations are stabilised into portable forms that can travel beyond their original occasion: classifications, doctrines, legal categories, diagnostic codes, official measures, archives, institutional procedures, standardised names.1
This shift is easy to miss because ordinary language conceals it. A person says they are exhausted. Another person says they have depression. A clinician records Major Depressive Disorder. The words appear to be successive descriptions of the same thing, yet the movement from ordinary articulation to diagnosis does more than increase precision: it creates a form that can move through prescription, insurance, research inclusion, sick leave, legal recognition, disability provision, and professional authority. The category becomes actionable. It can coordinate people who have never met and organise institutional consequences that none of the original speakers could enact alone.5
The power of L4 lies in its portability and institutional reach rather than in any greater truth relative to ordinary language, which itself sediments history, compresses relations, and can govern brutally. A symbol has become a ground when later coordination can stand upon it without reconstructing the interaction that produced it. The ground need not be material: a written law, a diagnostic name, an accounting convention, a statistical category, and an inherited theory are all symbolic deposits, each carrying forward an earlier act of distinction as a condition of what can happen next.1
The theory of notation makes this temporal architecture especially clear. Durable notation is a way of keeping a distinction actionable across absence, more than simply a better memory aid. For a symbolic deposit to function, there must be a carrier that holds form, an invariance later parties can recover, a route by which the deposit can be encountered again, and an institution or practice that reproduces competent uptake.6 Writing is therefore a distributed achievement of materials, training, custody, retrieval, and social authority, not merely marks on a surface. The record does not interpret itself; a later reader must reactivate it.
Sedimentation is never the end of recursion. A document can hold still, but its meaning, application, maintenance, and exception handling must be taken up by living beings. A rule must be enforced; an archive must be kept; a category must be applied; a score must be read; a map must be followed. Poiesis relocates recursion: it turns some of the prior work into a stable anchor, then redistributes the remaining work to interpretation, maintenance, enforcement, resistance, and revision.1
The historical stakes of this relocation are immense. The article on the origins of writing describes how recoverable invariance gradually enables distinctions to remain operative when the original interaction has disappeared. Durable records can carry obligations, accounts, names, orders, and histories beyond the lives of their makers, but they also make custody a source of power: whoever controls retrieval, authentication, and institutional uptake can decide which deposits remain effective and which become inert.6 The dead can govern the living, not because the past literally speaks, but because the living coordinate within deposits that the past has left behind.
Symbols make inheritance possible, and they make inherited closures possible in the same movement. A name, a border, a diagnosis, an official history, or an account may arrive as a fact because the recursive work that produced it has dropped from view. This is symbolic overreach in its vertical form: L4 appears as L1, abstraction appears as entity, a classificatory result appears as a natural kind.1 The category then becomes difficult to question precisely because the process of its making has become invisible.
IV. Eight things symbols do
Symbols perform a family of operations, not a single one, that become possible only because multisymbolization can deposit distinctions into portable form.

The first operation, articulation, gives a disturbance or difference a form that can be shared. This is a gain in availability. Something that had been only locally felt can be pointed to, discussed, remembered, or brought into relation with other cases. The second operation, coordination, makes clear why a symbol can be part of an event rather than merely a report about it. A warning changes what people do. A vow changes a relationship. A command, a greeting, a verdict, a diagnosis, and a declaration of war have effects because symbolic forms enter the field of action.1
The third and fourth operations, reference and sedimentation, alter time. Narrative can make an absent person relevant to a present decision; a calendar can turn a solar regularity into a shared expectation; an archive can make an earlier transaction retrievable; a name can retain a relation across distance and death. The gain is enormous, though a deposit does not preserve the whole recursive process from which it arose. A written promise is not the living trust that made it possible. A clinical note is not a patient's suffering. A census datum is not a person in the present tense. A law is not the interrecursive field of dispute and accommodation it partially settles.1
Portability extends this temporal gain spatially and socially. Institutions, science, law, markets, universities, and large-scale infrastructures all rely on symbols that can carry distinctions among people who do not share direct familiarity. Living Value Theory defines institutions as stabilisations of interrecursivity: multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors that make some coordination among responsive strangers expectable enough to continue.1 This is not a cynical account. A university, a court, a medical service, a public transport system, or a marriage may coordinate lives that could never be held together by face-to-face responsiveness alone. The pertinent question concerns how such stabilisation redistributes stakes, authority, and the burden of reopening, not whether it is desirable in general.
Intersymbolization is the operation that allows symbols to be linked with one another. A theory connects concepts; an iconography relates image, scripture, ritual, and doctrine; a scientific paradigm aligns instruments, equations, observations, classificatory terms, and standards of inference. This horizontal operation is indispensable, making a symbolic world intelligible as more than a pile of isolated marks. Yet it introduces a distinctive danger: symbols can fit one another very well without fitting the living coordination they are supposed to organise. A system can be elegant, consistent, and operationally powerful while becoming increasingly detached from the world of bodies, relationships, dwellings, materials, and unarticulated disturbances that it claims to master.4 This is intersymbolic overreach: the horizontal projection of one symbolic system's categories across another, non-equivalent system, so that coherence among symbols is mistaken for fit with the coordination those symbols are meant to serve.
Governance follows because symbolic deposits determine what institutions can see and act upon. A category creates paths of eligibility, treatment, payment, punishment, and recognition. A metric makes things comparable, allocable, rankable, and auditable. A rule defines what will count as evidence, compliance, harm, success, or exception. Such forms do not merely represent a domain to an institution; they build the domain within which institutional action becomes possible. The article on melancholy makes this plain: a psychiatric classification routes distress into medicine, law, insurance, and research, altering self-understanding and future possibility as it does so.5
Finally, symbols can be reopened. A law can be reinterpreted, a diagnosis revised, an archive reread, a word's history retraced, an image classified differently, a statistic recontextualised, a theory criticised. Recursive opening names a broader capacity than the symbolic case alone: something not presently available to recursive engagement becomes available again, whether through embodiment, being-with, dwelling, multimateriality, or multisymbolization. A previously unnoticed pain becoming salient is already an opening, with nothing symbolic yet reopened. In the symbolic case specifically, recursive reopening occurs when a settled symbolic closure becomes available to living recursivity again.1 This capacity is one reason symbols function as more than restriction. They are the medium in which criticism, genealogy, theory, and democratic contestation can occur. Yet reopening is not equally available to everyone. Some people possess institutional standing, archival access, time, credentials, money, or legal representation. Others bear the costs of an existing closure but must supply evidence, correct language, and procedural patience merely to make reopening conceivable. Symbols therefore do power not only by determining what is closed but by determining who may reopen it.
V. Symbols make absence active
The most distinctive contribution of multisymbolization is not that it produces meaning but that it allows absence to organise presence. A symbol can make something unavailable to immediate perception nevertheless relevant to current action. This may be a person who is absent, a past event, a future possibility, a rule, an obligation, a place elsewhere, a dead relative, an imagined danger, an institution, an account, or a theoretical object. Human social life has extraordinary reach because it can coordinate around such absences.
Narrative is one familiar case. A story can make a past action, a fictional world, or a person no longer present recursively relevant to those who hear it. Living Value Theory resists the conclusion that narrative is therefore a mere sequence of symbols conveying meanings. Narrative also builds and sustains mesocosms: worlds in which relations, resources, vulnerabilities, routines, places, and chances of continuation become available to an audience. The article on the Odyssey argues that the deeper hero of narrative is the world rather than the protagonist, because audiences care as much about whether a world can continue to hold the lives within it as about what happens to a character.7 Symbolic narration makes such a world available across absence, but the availability it creates is not exhausted by propositions.
Art makes the same point with particular force. A painting is often treated as an image waiting to be decoded into a verbal content. The LVT account of painting distinguishes mesocosmic construction from intersymbolic work. A painting can coordinate with an imagined or depicted world through scale, texture, bodily orientation, material affordance, atmosphere, and habitability. It can also coordinate with iconographies, titles, texts, theological systems, market categories, and art-historical precedents.8 The two relations are independent. An artwork may be highly precise in one and indeterminate in the other.
The Arnolfini Portrait becomes exemplary because its dog, oranges, chandelier, and mirror do not have to be treated as a set of symbols whose correct translation will exhaust the painting. The dog can simply be a dog within a painted world whose room is rich enough, stable enough, and available enough for the dog to be there without needing transcendental justification. The painting's achievement lies partly in habitability. It makes a world that someone could, in principle, have occupied before it asks that world to become an allegory.9 Symbols here operate among the material and embodied dimensions of the image rather than cancelling them, sometimes intensifying their availability and sometimes redirecting attention away from them.
Ritual and religion show a different form of reference-to-absence. The problem is not that ritual symbols are unreal. They coordinate living beings with absences that have become recursively relevant: ancestors, divine words, prior covenants, future judgement, sacred histories, and promises. The Genesis article treats the opening chapters of the Bible as a case of symbolic sedimentation that continually reopens, rather than a textual puzzle that one interpretation will finally solve. The text keeps making new stakes available because the relation among voice, trace, authority, authorship, and interpretation does not settle into a final closure.10 A symbol can preserve an opening rather than simply close one.
Superstition demonstrates that not every symbolic practice is a doctrine or a truth claim. The lucky sock, the small ritual before a surgical procedure, or the gesture at a threshold may be a low-cost coordination move addressed to a situation treated as responsive. It is performed where technique alone cannot guarantee an outcome. The person who says, I know it does nothing, but I still do it, may not be reporting a contradiction so much as accurately identifying a practice that was never designed to function as a scientific proposition.11 Symbols can act at the edge of uncertainty without asking to be promoted into a general theory of causation.
The larger point is that symbols make absence active in many different ways. They can preserve a relation to what is missing, but they can also manufacture an absence by stripping away what does not fit their format. The distinction must be made case by case. A symbol that makes an absent person, past labour, forgotten harm, or latent possibility available can expand the world. A symbol that treats all that does not fit its own form as nonexistent can impoverish it.
VI. Fit rather than meaning
If symbols do several different things, they cannot be assessed by one relation called truth, correspondence, or meaning. The theory of symbolic fit differentiates three relations. Cosmic fit concerns the relation between a purely nonrecursive symbolic system, paradigmatically mathematics, and the particular aspect of the cosmos to which it is applied. Mesocosmic fit concerns the relation between a symbolic articulation and the human-scale world of lived coordination across the five mediations. Intersymbolic fit concerns the coherence among symbolizations themselves.12
The three fits solve problems that ordinary talk of representation tends to merge. Mathematics may have striking cosmic fit in a domain whose structure supports formalisation. Its internal coherence does not by itself prove that it fits a particular physical process. Conversely, the fact that a formal system cannot capture an interrecursive relation does not establish that the relation is confused or unreal. It may indicate instead that the relation lacks the nonrecursive organisation required for direct mathematical fit.13
Mesocosmic fit is different again. It asks whether a category, image, diagnosis, theory, or intervention tracks the stable and recurrent patterns of lived coordination. This is not a demand for total representation, since no symbol can contain the full mesocosm. It is a question of selective adequacy: what does the symbol make available, what does it suppress, what stake does it serve, and what becomes possible when people coordinate through it? The relevant contrast lies between a symbolic form that helps a coordination continue, repair, or become intelligible and one that damages the coordination while presenting itself as its description, rather than between subjective meaning and objective truth.4
Intersymbolic fit concerns a third achievement. A medical manual, a legal code, a scientific theory, a religious doctrine, or an art-historical interpretation may render many different symbolic forms coherent with one another. Such coherence is often necessary: it lets people share a field, identify discrepancies, and test or revise claims. The article on dark matter argues that a scientific paradigm is an L4 stabilisation that makes heterogeneous L3 articulations coherent enough for a community to recurse upon them as one intelligible world.14 When that stabilisation fails, a crisis of intersymbolic fit emerges, the kind of intersymbolic overreach already named. One datum refuting one proposition is not sufficient to explain such a crisis; the deeper failure is that the larger system can no longer hold its symbolic articulations together.
The independence of the three fits prevents several recurrent errors. First, internal consistency does not establish mesocosmic fit: a system may explain every case in its own terms while leaving the experience of those cases badly described. Second, mesocosmic usefulness does not establish cosmic fit: a category may guide practical coordination well without revealing the deep structure of the cosmos. Third, cosmic fit in one aspect of a domain does not establish that a symbolic system has captured the whole of that domain. Population statistics may accurately describe regularities in deposits while missing the recursive lives that leave those deposits behind.15
The article on the history of population statistics makes the point with unusual precision. Before statistical analysis can occur, selected aspects of living process must be observed, classified, recorded, and deposited into durable symbolic form. The resulting datum is nonrecursive: it does not change in response to the life from which it was taken. A statistical regularity is therefore detected among symbolic sediments of past processes, not within living persons considered in the present tense. Quantification is not thereby discredited; the error begins when the stability of the record is projected back onto the recursive life recorded, or when a clean dataset is treated as direct access to the world rather than as evidence that considerable classificatory work has already occurred.15
Fit also provides a way to differentiate symbols without treating some as purely arbitrary and others as purely natural. A word, a graph, an anatomical image, a mathematical notation, a diagnostic category, and a painting do not have the same bandwidth: some can hold only a narrow slice of a situation, some coordinate several mediations, some are portable only within a highly trained institution, some invite an openness that a legal form cannot tolerate. The question is not simply whether a symbol represents; it concerns whether its mediational and recursivity bandwidth is adequate to what it is being asked to do.4
VII. Symbols govern by making things count
The most consequential symbols do not remain in books, screens, laboratories, or galleries. They enter institutions. Once an articulation becomes an official category, measure, credential, risk score, diagnosis, record, or criterion of eligibility, it reorganises who can act and who must be acted upon. It turns some experiences into administratively available objects while allowing others to remain unofficial, unintelligible, or suspect.
Recognition is one clear example. In medicine, suffering may be lived with full force while failing to pass through the symbolic gates that provide care, income, legitimacy, and support. Invisible illness is therefore a structural position inside recognition regimes rather than simply a condition medicine has not yet explained: a person's coordination is real in the mesocosm but cannot obtain stable symbolic passage through the classifications on which institutions depend.16 Adding a new label does not resolve this on its own. New labels may create much-needed routes to care and community, but they also establish new ways to define, monitor, rank, and normalise experience. Symbolic recognition is both a repair and a redistribution of recursivity.
The phrase forced misarticulation names the harm that occurs when a person is allowed to speak only in a symbolic form that distorts what they are trying to say. A complaint form may require harm to be described as a procedural irregularity. A clinical form may require distress to be described as a symptom cluster. An eligibility system may require loss to be compressed into a number. The person is not silent so much as participating under conditions in which their participation must take a format whose governing assumptions they did not choose.1 This can be more damaging than exclusion because distortion arrives with the appearance of recognition.
Global health institutions demonstrate the same problem at a larger scale. An institutional system may welcome traditional medicine in principle while being able to admit only what can be reformatted into its own categories of preparation, efficacy, safety, evidence, and professional authority. The outcome is selective absorption rather than simple rejection. Some elements become legible precisely by being detached from the interrecursive, material, historical, and spiritual coordinations that had made them what they were in practice.17 Codification can protect against appropriation and loss; it can also transform the thing codified. Codification is neither straightforwardly good nor bad in itself; the pertinent question is what happens to mesocosmic fit when institutional digestibility becomes the condition of recognition.
Metrics carry a related power. The DALY, for example, gives institutions a way to compare forms of suffering, allocate resources, establish priorities, and make global health governable at scale. Such an instrument does real coordination work. But its ability to compare depends on converting different lives, conditions, and losses into a common symbolic measure. The fit of that conversion varies by domain. It may be relatively tractable in some forms of infectious disease, more strained in chronic illness, and especially difficult in mental disorder or multimorbidity, where an additive metric confronts relations that are not lived as separable quantities, an instance of intersymbolic overreach in which one system's commensurating categories are projected across a domain built on different terms.18 The metric functions as an ontological project, not a neutral window onto suffering, making certain kinds of action possible by creating a commensurable object.
Digital health technologies push this dynamic into intimate time. A wearable score arrives before the person has formed an impression of their own condition. A mood tracker converts fluctuation into a monitored object. A streak makes ordinary self-maintenance visible as performance. The symbolic system can manufacture the felt misalignment it then reports, beyond simply measuring unease. Even when a signal is technically reliable, a further question remains: who asked for the inference, who controls disclosure, what purpose does it serve, and does it support or interrupt the person's coordination?19 A health symbol may have local mesocosmic fit as a signal while having poor fit as a practical intervention.
The same lesson applies to artificial intelligence, though the categorical boundary must be drawn with more care than the shorthand of the field usually allows. A language model works within an enormous symbolic register and produces fluent nonrecursive symbolic outputs: it can simulate recognition, continue narratives, and offer categories or explanations with startling facility. Those outputs become articulations only when a recursively living user takes them up within an interaction, in the same way that a written warning becomes a warning only once it is read.1 Linguistic fluency at the point of output is therefore not equivalent to interrecursive participation, and a language model cannot itself fail to recognise something in the LVT sense, since recognition belongs to recursive life. The responsibility for recognising the scope and limits of these outputs lies in the human and institutional coordination within which they are deployed.
This sharpens rather than softens the concern. The danger is not that artificial intelligence is a new, badly behaved recursive agent. It is that extraordinarily capable nonrecursive symbolic deposits can enter human recursive coordination while appearing to possess the recursivity they lack. The corresponding discipline is symbolic modesty on the part of the humans and institutions doing the deploying: building interfaces, warnings, and practices of use that keep the nonrecursive status of the output visible, so that it cannot stand in for the embodied, relational, and institutional work that living support requires.20
Symbols govern because they create a field in which some things count. This is necessary for large-scale coordination. It is also why every symbol that enters an institution needs a question attached to it: what cannot count here, and who bears the cost of that exclusion?
VIII. The productivity and danger of symbolic compression
Every symbol compresses. It selects some difference, holds it stable, and lets the rest recede. Compression is not a defect that can be eliminated. Without it, no concept, record, image, number, or theory could travel. The problem begins when the compression disappears into the form and the form presents itself as exhaustive.
Binaries are the clearest case. They translate a multidimensional or continuous coordination into a two-value symbolic distinction: normal or pathological, legal or illegal, native or foreign, rational or superstitious, nature or culture. Such distinctions can be useful. They can interrupt harmful naturalisation, mark a boundary that protects someone, or make a question administratively actionable. A binary can already be articulated at L3: either we leave or we stay is a binary the moment it is said, without yet being stabilised into anything portable. It becomes an L4 operation when that distinction is stabilised into a reusable, institutional, theoretical, or classificatory architecture that can travel beyond the occasion of its first use, and the level at which a binary operates cannot be read off its grammatical form alone. No binary, at either level, is found whole in the mesocosm. Treating it as a direct description makes the coordination that does not fit the binary difficult to see, and it turns the nonconforming remainder into an error, pathology, or exclusion.4
Not all abstraction does the same work, and several modes of L4 stabilisation can be distinguished. Protective stabilisation interrupts harmful L1 naturalisation by making an abuse, coercion, or exploitation visible. Extractive stabilisation captures coordination for institutional, theoretical, or symbolic-class purposes without returning anything to the people or situations described. Mechanical stabilisation applies inherited abstraction because theory expects it rather than because the mesocosm generated the question. Disguised stabilisation presents an abstraction as though it were a direct entity-name, the vertical form of symbolic overreach already named above. Runaway stabilisation becomes self-validating and no longer checks itself against the coordination that originally generated it.1 None of these modes is intrinsic to abstraction, classification, or binary form as such; each names a way a stabilised form can lose or keep its answerability to the coordination it stabilises.
The analysis of Heidegger's vocabulary offers a philosophical case of disguised stabilisation. Ordinary German words are taken from lived usage, stripped of their ordinary relation to embodied and social coordination, restabilised as technical terms, and then presented as more primordial than the experience from which they were derived. The result may feel profound because the word appears to reveal the ground of its own meaning, yet the operation can invert the actual history of the symbol: a sedimented word is made to appear as a source from which ordinary life derives.21 Etymology is not illegitimate as a method; it becomes overreach, the vertical form again, when it claims privileged access to what a word must now mean.
The etymology of value and worth shows a more responsible use, and a sharper claim can now be made about it. Etymology functions here as recursive reopening: it retraces a settled word toward the mediational worlds from which it emerged, recovering possibilities that have become inaudible in its present institutional use. Both words ultimately reopen onto domains of selfrecursive felt capacity: strength, efficacy, turning, becoming, before later symbolic stabilisation made value appear to be a property possessed by things.22 The histories of value and worth do not determine what the terms must mean today, and etymology proves no contemporary theory. It remains evidence of symbolic history rather than an oracle of conceptual necessity.
Scientific notation provides a counterweight to romantic suspicion of abstraction. New forms of notation can make inquiry possible. The history of science is not simply a record of observations waiting to be written down. Symbolic innovations often create the conditions under which new observations, experiments, and relations of comparison can become available. Chemistry, anatomy, and Newtonian physics depended upon forms of notation and representation that altered what could be stabilised, inspected, and argued about.23 Symbols can therefore increase the world's availability. The demand for fit asks what a new symbolic capacity opens, what it closes, and where its conditions of applicability end, rather than demanding a return to an unmediated life before symbols.
Art supplies the most important reminder that not every symbolic form should be judged by the same standards of compression. A painting may preserve surplus, ambiguity, or unresolved difference precisely by refusing to turn all that it makes available into a final statement. Art theory can then become a practice of intersymbolization that clarifies relations of fit without reducing the artwork to a message.24 The best theory makes more of the painting's available relations visible rather than extracting a hidden sentence from it, including the relation between what the image can sustain mesocosmically and what external symbolic systems demand of it.
IX. Symbols can reopen as well as close
It would be a mistake to treat symbolic sedimentation only as a movement toward domination. A world without durable symbols would have no archives, promises, public memory, arguments, laws, criticism, or theoretical self-correction. What matters is that every closure remains provisionally reopenable. A symbol becomes dangerous when its own historical construction can no longer be made available to recursive scrutiny.
Recursive opening begins where a settled form encounters a disturbance it cannot absorb: a diagnosis proves inadequate, a law meets an unanticipated case, a category no longer holds together the people or events it classifies, a record reveals an omission, a word acquires a force that the inherited vocabulary cannot contain. An opening may be disruptive, induced, or scheduled: a breakdown, an appeal, a review date, a ritual of revision, or a scholarly reinterpretation. In each case, what had functioned as ground becomes a question again.1
The ability to reopen is unevenly distributed. A person subject to a diagnosis may not have access to the institutional language required to contest it. A community may carry the cost of an official category without having the archive, legal standing, or scholarly credentials needed to alter it. A data subject may be scored, ranked, or predicted without being able to inspect the form that made the prediction possible. Here symbolic power becomes a matter of procedural access. It is not enough to celebrate openness abstractly. An open system that requires extraordinary resources to enter may be less open, for those who bear its stakes, than a modest form of local recognition.
The LVT account of askability makes this point more exact. L2 is questionability, the felt condition out of which a question may arise. L3 articulates a question for a particular interaction. L4 institutionalises legitimate questions, procedures, disciplines, examinations, and acceptable answers. L5 can ask why a question is askable at all, who may ask it, and what kinds of answer the existing architecture permits.1 Symbols do not simply answer questions. They organise the distribution of questions. They make some problems public and others inaudible.
The ethical requirement that follows is not that every closure be permanently unsettled. Coordination requires closure. A promise must sometimes count as kept; a diagnosis must sometimes guide care; an archive must sometimes be trusted; a rule must sometimes end a dispute. The ethical requirement is that closure remain answerable to the stakes it serves and that routes of reopening exist for people whom the closure harms. The opposite of authoritarian closure is a stable enough ground with a live capacity for repair, not endless symbolic volatility.
X. A discipline of symbolic responsibility
An LVT account of symbols is neither a celebration of language nor a fantasy of escaping it. Symbols are indispensable historical mediations. They allow human beings to coordinate with what is absent, build institutions, make science, preserve and contest memory, organise care, create art, and inherit worlds from people they will never meet. But they are always downstream from the recursive lives whose coordination they may articulate. Their authority is therefore conditional.
The following questions can serve as a practical discipline of symbolic responsibility.

These questions make it possible to distinguish symbolic humility from anti-intellectualism. Symbolic humility holds that partiality is an ontological condition of symbolisation, not that a diagnosis, equation, theory, archive, or institution is worthless because it is partial. A symbol can be exceptionally good at one thing and badly fitted to another. Mathematics can offer extraordinary cosmic fit in a nonrecursive domain without becoming a universal language of life. A diagnosis can provide a route to care without exhausting a person's suffering. A legal category can protect against harm without becoming the whole truth of a relation. A painting can sustain multiple relations of fit without needing to be converted into a sentence.
The corresponding criterion is repair rather than perfection. A symbol is responsible when it makes a coordination more available without claiming to replace it; when it enables action while retaining knowledge of its own scope; when it can be reopened by those who bear the stakes; when it does not convert its own institutional authority into mesocosmic authority; and when it helps restore the conditions under which life can become less symbolically burdened again. The most successful coordination often becomes mercifully unnoticed.1 Where symbolisation responds to a disturbance in coordination, its success may lie in making explicit only what requires articulation, and then returning a repaired coordination to the ease from which it emerged.
Conclusion: Symbols do not replace worlds
What do symbols do? They make distinctions travel. They allow absence to matter. They deposit prior coordination into forms that can outlast their makers. They compose systems, establish institutions, enable measurement, organise recognition, authorise action, and permit criticism. They can widen the field of what becomes available to living beings. They can also compress a field until the life within it becomes unrecognisable.
The decisive question concerns whether their work remains fitted to the coordination they organise, not whether symbols are true or false, free or coercive, natural or artificial. Symbols are valuable when they serve the living world without pretending to become its master code. They become harmful when their own stability is mistaken for the stability of what they name. The task of Living Value Theory is to keep their origins, limits, remainders, and responsibilities in view, so that the durable forms human beings make can continue to support rather than supplant the worlds in which life is actually lived, not to abandon symbols for a supposedly immediate reality.
