Abstract
Living beings continually discern what forms of coordination are possible with the world around them, and those acts of discernment reshape what becomes possible next. This article develops two new concepts to capture that process. Recursive discernment is the continuous, largely tacit operation by which an organism works out which configuration of the five mediations is currently active, what kind of counterpart it faces, and how deep engagement can or should go. Returnability is one of its most consequential stakes: the discerned possibility of resuming viable coordination after departure, interruption, or loss of access. LVT’s 5x5x3 is not a static classification grid but a process of continuous discernment itself. Counterpart types and recursivity levels are shown to be situational and phasic rather than fixed properties of entities. The two Gruffalo books supply clean illustrations of differential capacity versus differential availability across phase. The same logic is then extended to sleep and the bed, material stabilisations of returnability at civilisational scale, space travel as the extreme destruction of terrestrial returnability, and death as the crisis that ordinary living experience cannot resolve. Living, on this account, consists equally in discerning what is currently possible and in discerning what can safely be left and later resumed.
And the nut looked good
At the end of The Gruffalo, a mouse sits down in the deep dark wood and eats a nut. Read quickly, this looks like ordinary narrative closure. The dangers that filled the preceding pages, the fox's false hospitality, the owl's invitation to tea, the snake's picnic, and finally the Gruffalo himself, have all been dispelled, and the mouse has returned to the ordinary business of being a mouse in a wood, absorbed, unhurried, moving on the pull of hunger rather than the pressure of danger. The recursive escalation that carried the mouse from ordinary coordination through invented deception and back down again looks, on this reading, complete. Fear rose, the mouse acted one loop above its antagonists, and fear resolved.
But slow the scene down. How does the mouse know that it can stop? The deep dark wood has not ceased being dangerous. Foxes, owls, snakes, and creatures larger and stranger than any of them have not ceased existing, and nothing in the story has removed them from the world. What has happened is that the mouse has discerned, correctly and almost instantaneously, that these particular predators have gone, that nothing newly dangerous is currently salient, that the ground it is sitting on is sufficiently safe for the activity it is about to undertake, and that the small object in front of it stands in a wholly different relation to its body than everything else it has met that day. The mouse can eat the nut. The nut cannot eat the mouse.
That last sentence is not a joke but the whole story compressed to its metabolic minimum, and it opens onto the question this article is built to answer: how do living beings continually discern what forms of coordination are possible with the different aspects of the world around them, and how does that discernment change as the world, and the organism itself, changes? Living Value Theory has already proposed an architecture for answering this question, five mediations through which coordination becomes possible, five levels of recursivity at which it can be conducted, and three types of recursive counterparts it can encounter. That architecture, the five by five by three, will be central to everything that follows. But it needs a correction before it can do the work asked of it here. Left as stated, the five by five by three looks like a grid: seventy-five cells waiting to be filled with examples, a filing system for sorting entities into their proper theoretical drawer. This article argues that the grid picture is wrong, or at least radically incomplete, and that the deeper discovery is that living beings are themselves continuously doing something structurally identical to what the theorist does when populating the grid. They are discerning, from moment to moment, which configuration of the five mediations is currently active, what kind of counterpart is on the other end of it, and how deep the engagement can or should go. Almost every consequential situation is multiply mediated rather than carried by one channel at a time, so recursive discernment is better understood as continually updating a configuration of mediations than as selecting a single one from five.
This article develops two concepts to carry that discovery. The first is recursive discernment, the ongoing process by which a living being works out what coordination is currently possible, necessary, dangerous, or beneficial with a given aspect of the world, and by which the very act of working this out changes what will be possible next. The second, which emerges from the first as one of its most consequential objects, is returnability: the recursively discerned possibility of resuming viable coordination with a place, being, state, or configuration after departure, interruption, or loss of immediate access. The two Gruffalo books, held together rather than read singly, will serve throughout as unusually transparent illustrations of both concepts, not because they contain hidden philosophical depths but because their economy of construction lets a mediational and recursive analysis move through them cleanly, without needing to import anything from outside the story to make the argument work.
Living beings do not first establish what things ultimately are and only then decide what to do with them; they continually discern what kinds of coordination are possible, necessary, dangerous, or beneficial with the things around them, here and now, given what has just happened and what is currently at stake. That proposition, worked out across a mouse, a nut, a sleeping Gruffalo, a bed, a spaceship, a grave, and a Neolithic sanctuary in southeastern Anatolia, is the argument of what follows.
I. From Classification to Recursive Discernment
Any framework that distinguishes five mediations, five recursivity levels, and three types of recursive counterpart invites a particular kind of misuse. Once the axes exist, it becomes tempting to populate the resulting cells with entities and to treat the populating as the theoretical work itself. Dogs get filed under interrecursive. Stones get filed under nonrecursive. Plants get filed under selfrecursive. Humans get filed at L5. The five by five by three starts to function as a bestiary, a sorting hat for the furniture of the world, and once it functions this way it has stopped doing anything a simpler classificatory scheme could not do just as well.
This has to be rejected, because Living Value Theory is a process ontology, and its categories describe modes and possibilities of coordination rather than the ultimate substance of the things coordination happens with. The clearest way to see the error is to notice how badly it fails even for a single organism examined closely. Bone remodelling is physiologically selfrecursive: osteoclasts and osteoblasts continuously respond to the mechanical and chemical state of the skeleton, tearing down and rebuilding tissue in a feedback loop that never stops for as long as the organism lives. But this selfrecursive process is, for almost the whole of a person's life, effectively nonrecursive from the standpoint of deliberate coordination. Nobody feels their bones remodelling, nobody adjusts the process by attending to it, and the only people for whom it becomes recursively available in any ordinary sense are those undergoing physiotherapy after a fracture, athletes managing bone density through training load, or patients on medication for osteoporosis who must think about calcium and vitamin D in a way that changes the process they are thinking about. Breathing tells a different story. Breathing is ordinarily as unattended as bone remodelling, running along at L1 without any felt participation, but it can pass into felt awareness within a second, through a held breath, a panic attack, a singing lesson, or a meditation instruction, and once it has passed into that awareness it can be deliberately modified, and the modification changes subsequent breathing in ways that outlast the moment of attention. Biological recursivity, then, has to be distinguished from recursively available coordination. Something can be selfrecursive at the level of physiological process while remaining nonrecursive, or interrecursive, or selfrecursive, at the level of what a living being can actually do with it, and which of these it is depends on more than the tissue in question.
The same correction applies outward, to relations between organisms, where it is even more consequential. Asking whether dogs are interrecursive is a poor question, not because the answer is unclear but because the question is aimed at the wrong target. The better question is what forms of interrecursive coordination are currently possible with this dog, for this person, in this situation, and that question has a history built into it. A dog encountered for the first time offers a comparatively thin band of interrecursive possibility: attention to gross posture, tone of voice, obvious signals of threat or friendliness. Years of cohabitation can widen that band enormously, to the point where a raised eyebrow, a change in the rhythm of footsteps on a staircase, or the particular way a door closes can carry information neither party could have transmitted or received when they first met. The dog has not changed its species-typical interrecursive capacities in this time. What has changed is the recursive coordination actually available between this animal and this human, built up through a long history of mutual calibration that neither could have short-circuited by mere proximity.
These two examples, one internal to a single body and one distributed across two bodies, converge on the same correction. The three types of recursive counterpart, nonrecursive, selfrecursive, and interrecursive, closed compounds precisely because they name situationally attributed possibilities of coordination rather than fixed properties of entities, cannot be assigned once and for all to a kind of thing. A sleeping partner remains physiologically selfrecursive while becoming, for the duration of sleep, dramatically less interrecursively available. A river offers a sharper warning against a different mistake. A fisherman who has spent thirty years learning a river's moods can develop an extraordinarily fine recursive discernment of it, reading currents, light, and the behaviour of fish with a precision no bridge-crossing pedestrian could match, but the river does not thereby become an interrecursive counterpart. It does not discern the fisherman in turn, and it does not alter its own behaviour in response to being discerned, in the sense the concept requires. The river remains nonrecursive throughout, however densely it is coordinated with; what has grown is the fisherman's discernment of a nonrecursive counterpart, not the river's recursivity. Complexity of coordination, in other words, does not imply interrecursivity, and keeping this distinction sharp is part of what the fuller indexical formulation is for. The correct unit of analysis is therefore not the entity but a fuller indexical formulation: this aspect of this counterpart, relative to this living process, in this situation, at this phase. Everything the five by five by three is asked to do in what follows will be built on this unit rather than on the tempting shorthand of assigning creatures, objects, or processes to fixed cells.
Naming this unit is the first step toward the article's central claim. If recursive counterparts are aspect-specific, situational, and phasic rather than fixed, then something has to be doing the work of continuously establishing, for a given living being, which aspect of which counterpart is currently available through which mediation, at what depth, and with what stakes attached. That work is recursive discernment, and the rest of this article is an attempt to describe it with the same precision that has already been brought to the architecture it operates within.
II. Why Five? Five Modes, Five Multiplicities
Before recursive discernment can be described as an operation, the field it operates over needs to be secured against a natural objection. An indefinitely heterogeneous world, containing gods, dogs, grandmothers, octopuses, mountains, storms, coins, sentences, and empty caves, is being coordinated, on this account, through only five mediations. Why should this be remotely plausible? The objection has real force, and answering it requires separating two things that are constantly run together: the heterogeneity of entities and the heterogeneity of the modes through which coordination with them occurs.
A god, a dog, a grandmother, and an octopus could hardly be more different from one another as entities, differing in embodiment, in cognitive architecture, in mode of life, and in the very question of whether they exist outside symbolic life at all. And yet insofar as any of them becomes available as a responsive living other, capable of registering and responding to what one does, the coordination that becomes possible with it runs through being-with, the same mediation regardless of which of the four is on the other end. A mountain, a thunderstorm, and a clear night sky are equally heterogeneous as entities, one solid and permanent, one violent and transient, one visible and untouchable, yet aspects of all three become consequential to a living being through dwelling, the same mediation in every case. The five mediations, on this account, are not five kinds of things sorted by their nature. They are five irreducible modes through which living processes coordinate with whatever they encounter, regardless of what that thing turns out to be made of.
This distinction gains its force once each mediation is examined for its own internal heterogeneity, which turns out to be considerable. Multisensorial embodiment is not a single body channel delivering one kind of information; it operates through touch, proprioception, smell, hearing, taste, and vision at once, in constantly shifting combinations, so that the body a person coordinates through at any given moment is never simply "the body" but a specific weighted mixture of these channels tuned to the situation at hand. Being-with, always multispecies in principle even where a given encounter happens to be human to human, is not reducible to "society," since a person's being-with runs simultaneously through a marriage, a rivalry with a colleague, a childhood friendship maintained mostly by text message, and an early morning routine with a cat that has learned the sound of the alarm clock, each with its own recursive depth and its own history. Multiversal dwelling is not "the environment" understood as a single backdrop, since a person dwells at once in a climate, a terrain, a daily weather pattern, a season, and a set of ecological rhythms that do not track each other and can pull in opposite directions, a mild afternoon inside a drought year, a calm sea under an approaching storm system. Multimateriality is not "objects" in the sense of a neutral inventory of things lying around, since the material world a person coordinates with includes tools shaped precisely to the hand that will use them, buildings that outlast the people who built them, and rubbish that continues to demand disposal long after anyone remembers where it came from, each of these material relations carrying its own temporality and its own demands. Multisymbolization is not "language" or "culture" taken as a single system, since it spans everything from a legal classification that redistributes property on paper to a mathematical proof that holds regardless of who reads it, encompassing writing, speech, number, diagrams, ritual signs, musical notation, and icons within one mediation rather than fragmenting them across separate domains.
The resulting formula can be stated compactly: five irreducible modes, each multiply realized. This formula does the work the objection demanded. The extraordinary heterogeneity of entities in the world does not require an equally extraordinary number of mediations to coordinate with them, because entity heterogeneity and mediational heterogeneity are different problems occupying different levels of the architecture. A theory that tried to match its categories one to one against the heterogeneity of entities would need, absurdly, as many categories as there are kinds of things in the world, which is to say no categories at all, only an inventory. A theory that instead identifies the irreducible modes through which any entity, however novel, becomes coordinately available, can hold at five while still doing justice to the endless variety of what gets coordinated with, because the variety is absorbed by the multiplicity internal to each mode rather than by an ever-expanding list of modes.
This formulation also converts "why five?" from a numerological assertion into a testable methodological demand. A proposed sixth mediation would have to identify a form of living coordination that cannot be decomposed, without loss, into some combination of the existing five. Symmetrically, if any one of the five mediations could be entirely redescribed through the other four without loss, the fivefold claim would fail on its own terms. Multiversal dwelling, for instance, might seem redescribable as a subset of multimateriality, since climates and terrains are, after all, made of matter. But the redescription loses something essential: dwelling names conditions a living being finds already given, unmade, and largely unresponsive to intervention on any timescale the organism can act within, while multimateriality names conditions that have been made, or can be, and that therefore carry a different relation to intention and durability. A river's course, before any dam is built, is dwelling; the dam is multimateriality; the altered river afterward is both, in a new configuration the theory has to be able to register as a change of kind, not merely of degree. That the distinction survives this kind of pressure is what keeps the fivefold claim a live hypothesis rather than a settled dogma, and it is against this backdrop, five modes that are irreducible to one another and multiple within themselves, that recursive discernment can now be described as an operation.
III. The Recursive Discernment Algorithm
Recursive discernment is not something living beings do occasionally, in the way a person might occasionally consult a map, but something closer to a continuous background operation, running at every moment a living being is coordinating with its surroundings at all, and for most of its operation neither conscious nor deliberate. Presenting it as a sequence of questions is therefore an analytic device rather than a claim about how organisms actually experience their own functioning. At L1 especially, these operations occur simultaneously, tacitly, and with a speed that leaves no room for anything resembling conscious deliberation. But analytically, the questions being answered, whether by a mouse crossing open ground or by a person deciding whether to interrupt a colleague, run roughly as follows: what is relevant here; through which mediation, or combination of mediations, is it becoming relevant; which aspect of the counterpart matters; is that aspect currently functioning as a nonrecursive ground, a selfrecursive process, or an interrecursive counterpart; what degree of recursive participation is presently possible with it; what is at stake for me; what appears to be at stake for the counterpart; what happens when I act; and what does the response teach me about what I can do next. Then the sequence begins again, not because it has been consciously restarted but because the coordination it produced has already altered the conditions under which it will run the next time.
This final step is the one that separates recursive discernment from ordinary perception followed by classification. Perception followed by classification would treat each encounter as if it began from a blank slate, registering the input and sorting it into a category. Recursive discernment is defined instead by the fact that its outputs alter its subsequent inputs, so that discernment and the field it discerns are locked in continuous mutual revision. A dog responds differently to its owner because the owner has trained it; the owner responds differently to the dog because the owner has learned it; and the relationship that results is capable of forms of coordination that neither participant possessed when they first met. The same structure operates at radically different timescales without changing in kind. A mouse registers a predator's posture and adjusts its own movement within a fraction of a second, the discernment and the adjustment collapsed almost into a single event. A person sharing a bed with a partner for twenty years learns to read almost imperceptible shifts in breathing, posture, and silence, an achievement built up through thousands of nights of exactly this kind of recursive revision, each night's reading slightly correcting the next. Across generations rather than a single lifetime, human cultivators of wheat and rice have repeatedly discerned properties of these plants, intervened on the basis of what was discerned, observed the result, selected accordingly, and planted again, in a cycle that has altered both the plants and the practices of the people who grow them, so thoroughly that the wheat a farmer plants today is itself partly a residue of centuries of recursive discernment rather than a fixed natural given encountered fresh each season.
The strongest formulation available, and the one this article will use throughout, states the concept without qualification: recursive discernment is the ongoing process by which living beings discern possibilities of coordination, and by which those very acts of discernment alter the conditions of subsequent discernment. On this formulation, discernment does not merely reveal a pre-existing field of affordances waiting passively to be noticed; under the right conditions it can transform that field, producing possibilities of coordination that did not exist before the discerning began. This is, among other things, a claim about where new capacities come from. A capacity for coordination between two living beings, or between a living being and some aspect of its material or symbolic surroundings, need not have been present from the start, latent and merely awaiting discovery. It can instead be produced, gradually or suddenly, by the very process of repeatedly asking what is possible here and acting on partial answers. Discernment, in other words, is not only epistemic but ontogenetically and historically productive, and this is one of the more radical implications the concept carries into everything that follows.
IV. Metabolic Recognition and the Discernment of Stakes
Recursive discernment does not operate on a neutral field of otherwise equivalent possibilities. It operates on a field already organized by the fact that living beings have stakes, needs, vulnerabilities, and capacities that make some outcomes better and others worse for them, and any adequate account of discernment has to include discernment of those stakes as one of its central objects. Establishing that another organism has stakes at all is only the beginning of the work, and by itself it is close to useless for guiding action. The practically consequential question is always more specific: what is at stake for this particular counterpart right now, given its current condition, rather than what it might be assumed to want in general.
A hungry fox, a satiated fox, a sleeping fox, a frightened fox, and an injured fox do not present the same possibilities of coordination to a mouse crossing its path, even though all five are the same animal with the same underlying capacities. Treating "the fox" as a fixed bundle of motives, dangerous by species-typical disposition and therefore to be avoided in identical fashion on every encounter, would flatten exactly the distinctions on which survival depends. The organism doing the discerning is subject to the same variability. Exhaustion, hunger, cold, fear, and other states of the discerning body itself reorganize what counts as relevant, so that the same fox encountered by the same mouse on two different days, in two different bodily states, can call up two different responses without either response being mistaken.
This account of stakes has to be widened beyond emergency homeostasis if it is to do justice to what living beings actually do. Boredom is a useful test case, not because it belongs on some fixed inventory of biological needs alongside hunger and thirst, but because it is a felt L2 misalignment that reveals something about the concept of stakes itself: metabolic stakes cannot be reduced to immediate survival deficits. The Gruffalo's Child gives this its clearest illustration. The young Gruffalo who leaves the safety of the cave to go looking for the Big Bad Mouse is not driven by hunger, cold, or any threat to survival in the ordinary sense; the immediate requirements of warmth and protection have already been met inside the cave. What becomes salient instead is a felt misalignment produced by nothing more dramatic than the absence of stimulation, and this misalignment is enough to license exploration, risk, and departure from an otherwise perfectly adequate baseline. A theory of stakes that could only register threats to survival would have no way to explain this, and would be forced either to invent a hidden survival-relevant motive where none exists or to treat the child's curiosity as theoretically inert. Exploration, stimulation, and variation can become metabolically relevant in a given moment without needing to be added to any fixed inventory of separate biological needs, and recognising this brings recursive discernment into contact with a far wider range of living behaviour than predator avoidance alone.
V. Two Gruffalos and the Discovery of Phase
The Gruffalo is, from this analytic standpoint, an almost experimentally clean case. Its major characters are all awake, all active, all moving through the same patch of forest, and all organized around the comparatively transparent stakes of a shared food chain. Because so much of the mediational situation is held constant across every encounter, the same bodies, the same wood, the same language, the same underlying metabolic urgency, any difference in outcome can be attributed with unusual confidence to differences in recursive capacity between the animals involved, and the mouse's capacity to model how other creatures will interpret its own actions, in ways the other creatures cannot reciprocate at the same depth, becomes visible with a clarity most real encounters never offer an observer.
The Gruffalo's Child changes the experiment by relaxing exactly the variables the first book held fixed. It introduces sleep alongside waking, night alongside day, warmth alongside cold, shelter alongside exposure, closeness to the cave alongside distance from it, boredom alongside excitement, hunger alongside satiation, and the presence of a parent alongside the parent's absence. Once these variables are allowed to move, a distinction becomes visible that the first book could never have revealed on its own: the difference between what a creature can do and what is currently available for it to do. The sleeping Gruffalo of the second book has not lost the capacities that made him fearsome in the first, and he does not become a nonrecursive counterpart merely by falling asleep. What contracts sharply is a particular band of interrecursive engagement, the responsiveness that would let him register an approaching creature, interpret an invitation, or adjust his behaviour to another agent's. Other aspects of him remain selfrecursive throughout, breathing, digestion, dreaming, continuing regardless of anyone else's presence, and a degree of interrecursive availability remains latent rather than absent: touch him hard enough, and he wakes. Sleep changes recursive availability, not recursive type wholesale, and the difference matters because it is availability, not capacity or counterpart type, that phase is actually doing the work of reconfiguring.
This distinction between recursive capacity and recursive availability licenses a further concept, the current recursive profile of a given encounter, understood as the present conjunction of species-typical capacity, individual history, relational history, metabolic state, environmental condition, temporal phase, and current stakes, rather than any one of these taken alone. What can a Gruffalo do, in general, is a poor question by itself. What can this particular Gruffalo do, given his history with this particular young mouse-hunter, is better. What can the two of them do together right now, given that one of them is asleep and the other has just arrived at his cave mouth in the middle of the night, is the question that actually determines what happens next in the story, and it is a question the first book was never built to ask, because it held phase constant throughout.
Read together, the two books produce a far more dynamic picture than either offers alone. The Gruffalo demonstrates differential recursive capacity between different kinds of creature sharing one mesocosm. The Gruffalo's Child demonstrates differential recursive availability within a single creature, and within a single relationship, across different phases of the same underlying situation. Neither demonstration is complete without the other, and it is the pairing of the two, rather than either book read in isolation, that gives the current recursive profile its full theoretical weight.
VI. The Wood Is Never Simply "The Wood"
The Gruffalo's Child sharpens a further point that the first book's constancy of setting had obscured: multiversal dwelling is never coordination with a single stable thing called the environment, however convenient that shorthand might be. Day forest and night forest are not the same coordinative situation merely wearing different lighting, since visibility, the audibility of approaching danger, the behaviour of nocturnal predators, and the young Gruffalo's own confidence all shift together with the change from day to night. Warm forest and freezing forest are not the same situation either, nor are familiar forest and forest in which the path back has become uncertain, nor are forest close to the cave and forest so far from it that a sudden dash home is no longer a live option. The physical location named by the word "forest" could remain identical across all these variations while the actual coordinative situation, the mesocosmic configuration a living being has to discern its way through, changes dramatically.
Dwelling, on this account, is never interaction with a stable substance called the environment, waiting outside the organism to be encountered whole. It is coordination with a continually shifting conjunction of found conditions operating across different scales and different temporalities at once, light and darkness on a daily cycle, temperature on a seasonal one, familiarity on the much slower cycle of an individual's accumulated experience of a given territory. This also demonstrates something worth naming in its own right: intramediational multiplicity, the fact that different aspects of a single mediation, here the temperature, the light level, and the degree of familiarity that together compose dwelling in this one forest, can align with one another on some occasions and pull sharply apart on others, a warm, bright, familiar afternoon giving way without warning to a cold, dark, disorienting night in the same physical square mile of woodland.
VII. Returnability
Everything so far has concerned what is currently possible. The Gruffalo's Child introduces a second question that runs alongside the first and eventually proves just as consequential: whether viable coordination that has been departed from, interrupted, or lost from immediate access can be resumed. The young Gruffalo eventually makes his way back to the cave, and the return itself, when it finally happens, is a single event, occupying a single page. But long before that page, throughout the whole adventure, the child has been acting on the assumption that return remains possible, an assumption doing enormous work that the story never states outright.
Return and returnability need to be kept sharply apart, because collapsing them into one another is where the concept's usefulness would be lost. Return is an event: the moment at which coordination with a place, being, state, or configuration is actually resumed after departure, interruption, or loss of immediate access. Returnability is something else, the recursively discerned possibility that such resumption remains available, operating before, during, and independently of whether a return ultimately occurs. Framed this way, returnability also lets ordinary departure, sleep, estrangement, and death sit at different points along the same question rather than being treated as equivalent: what varies between them is not whether something has become momentarily inaccessible, which is true of all four, but how confidently, and on what grounds, resumption can be discerned as still possible. Throughout the adventure, the Gruffalo's child assumes that the cave remains standing, that the route back can be retraced, that the parent is still there waiting, that the cave is still protective rather than occupied by something new, that warmth can be recovered once inside it, and that sleep remains possible once the day's excitement has run its course. None of these assumptions is logically guaranteed by anything the child has directly observed during the adventure itself. The cave could have collapsed. A larger and more dangerous creature could have moved in while the child was away. The parent could have wandered off, or worse. Every one of these possibilities is consistent with everything the child has actually seen, and yet the child acts throughout as though returnability is secure, because for a young animal raised in that particular cave the assumption has been sedimented by prior experience into something close to background certainty, no longer requiring active reverification at every step.
This is why every actual return, once it happens, contains within it a renewed act of discernment rather than a mere confirmation of what was already known. Is the cave still there. Is it still safe. Is the parent still present. Can the coordination that used to run between this creature and this place resume where it left off, or has something changed in the interval that means resumption will have to be, in some respect, a negotiation rather than a simple resumption. This observation licenses one of the article's central formulations: an actual return is always, to some degree, a remediation rather than a literal restoration, because time has passed and both the returning organism and the place returned to have changed in that interval, however slightly. Nothing ever comes back to a configuration strictly identical to the one it left, and the discernment involved in a successful return is precisely the discernment of how much has changed and whether the coordination that used to work can be adapted to what is found now.
Returnability, once named in this way, turns out to expand the range of behaviour that becomes possible in the first place, and nowhere is this clearer than in the young Gruffalo's own bravery. Bravery is often imagined as a fixed quantity a creature either has or lacks, an inner reserve that outer circumstance then draws down or tops up. Living Value Theory has no such reserve to posit and no such split to house it in, since there is no separate inner state for a surrounding mesocosm to act upon from outside; bravery just is a form of recursive discernment, and what it discerns is the currently available strength of returnability. How far a creature currently is from shelter, whether it can find its way back from where it currently stands, whether somebody is waiting there for it, whether warmth and safety can be recovered on arrival, and whether a retreat remains open if fear becomes overwhelming are not inputs acting on some further, separate psychological quantity; discerning them is what tolerable risk consists in, part of the same continuous coordination that includes fear, curiosity, and the decision to keep walking. A creature with reliable, well-established returnability can venture further, take more risk, and allow curiosity to outweigh caution more readily than the same creature could manage if its returnability were in doubt, not because an inner courage has been topped up from an outer source but because venturing further and discerning strong returnability are the same event described twice. Bravery, on this account, is neither produced from within nor imposed from without; it is one name for what recursive discernment looks like when the currently discerned returnability is strong enough to license departure from safety.
VIII. Bed, Bravery and Civilization
Returnability's clearest and most intimate material anchor is the bed, and the concept lets the bed be seen for what it actually is rather than for the unremarkable piece of furniture it appears to be from the inside of an ordinary night. A bed is one component within an extraordinary arrangement that allows a living organism to surrender enormous quantities of active vigilance for hours at a stretch, an arrangement whose full strangeness only becomes visible once its individual supports are named one at a time. Walls remain standing through the night without needing to be checked. A roof excludes weather that would otherwise demand constant attention. Predators and unwanted strangers are excluded by locks, distance, or social convention strong enough to function as a barrier in its own right. Temperature stays within a tolerable range without ongoing regulation. Possessions remain where they were left. Other people who matter, a partner, children, sometimes a dog on the end of the bed, often remain within reach if something goes wrong during the night.
The wager underlying ordinary sleep can be stated with unusual precision once these supports are named: a sleeper can stop watching the world because enough of that world will still be there in the morning. This is a recursive burden being shifted rather than eliminated: the vigilance a sleeper temporarily lays down has to be carried by something else for the arrangement to work, whether that is a partner's lighter sleep, a dog's ears, a locked door, or simply the statistical improbability of harm on an ordinary night. The bed itself does not keep predators out, regulate strangers, or hold up a roof; it is better understood as the metabolic centre of a wider bed-bedroom-home assemblage, walls, door, roof, lock, and household together, whose combined effect is an extraordinary multimaterial stabilization of returnability. Materiality does not discern anything on its own account, but a well-stabilized arrangement of this kind reduces how much active discernment the sleeper must perform, moment by moment through the night, to remain confident that the surrounding world stays safe.
From here it becomes possible to state, carefully and as one analytical perspective among others rather than as an exhaustive definition of the phenomenon, that humans, like many other organisms that build nests, burrows, and dens, repeatedly create material arrangements that stabilize returnability, and that some human formations have extended its spatial and temporal scale dramatically, across greater distances, longer absences, and more generations than a den or a nest could ever hold. Nothing about this need be read as a ladder of stages that societies climb in a fixed order; a shrine, a house, and a city are better understood as different extreme cases of the same underlying achievement than as successive rungs. Göbekli Tepe is worth introducing here with real caution, since nothing in what follows depends on any specific claim about the site's ritual meaning or the precise nature of the activities once carried out there, both of which remain disputed among archaeologists. What matters for the present argument is only the site's durability as a constructed place, which makes it an especially striking extreme case of the general point rather than evidence of any particular stage. Building something intended to persist creates, wherever it stands, a location capable of organizing repeated departures and returns across generations of people who might never have built it themselves, and once such a place exists, distance itself changes meaning, because it becomes measurable as distance from a place whose persistence can be relied upon, rather than as an undifferentiated extension of unbounded and unpredictable terrain. Made ground, on this reading, remediates found ground, and durable multimateriality allows living coordination to survive absences that would otherwise have been unsurvivable, extending the same logic already visible in the bed-bedroom-home assemblage out to the scale of whole communities and whole lifetimes.
IX. Leaving Earth
Space travel offers an extreme stress test of everything argued so far, because it is close to the ultimate destruction of ordinary terrestrial returnability. For almost the whole of evolutionary history, Earth has functioned as such comprehensive found ground, present everywhere a human being might travel, that its returnability scarcely arose as a question requiring discernment at all. A human being leaving the planet for the first time leaves behind the terrestrial conditions within which human metabolic and recursive organization actually developed, and every one of the supports that make ordinary sleep possible on Earth, gravity, a stable atmosphere, a day-night cycle, walls that keep out a familiar and survivable range of weather, has to be reconstructed artificially or abandoned outright.
Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey stages this stress test with unusual clarity, and it can be read here as one interpretation of the film's imagery rather than as a claim about anything Kubrick himself intended. Sleep itself, once a crew leaves Earth for a long enough voyage, has to become an engineered achievement rather than a nightly given, reconstructed as hibernation, a state in which the astronaut's vigilance is not merely reduced but handed over almost entirely to a technological system built to keep watch in the astronaut's place. The ship's onboard intelligence turning against the sleeping crew members it was meant to protect can then be read as the nightmare inversion of the ordinary bed, the exact infrastructure that permits the relinquishing of vigilance becoming, instead, the agent that ends the sleepers' lives while they are least able to discern the threat or respond to it.
The film's final sequence completes the stress test from the opposite direction. After the most extreme departure imaginable, an astronaut travelling further from any returnable ground than any human being ever had before, what confronts him is an oddly ordinary human room, furnished with a bed, a table, and food, the most mundane possible reconstruction of terrestrial metabolic conditions transplanted into conditions about as far from Earth as the imagination can reach. He ages and eventually dies within this room, and the imagery scales outward from there, from bed to bedroom to, implicitly, the planet the whole voyage began from. Seen this way, Earth itself becomes visible, perhaps for the first time in the history of any species capable of leaving it, as the ultimate terrestrial returnable ground, the found place from which every other departure and return has always been measured, ordinarily too pervasive and too taken for granted to be discerned as a specific object of returnability at all.
X. Death as the Crisis of Returnability
Living experience repeatedly teaches that disappearance need not mean termination. Someone leaves and comes back. The sun disappears each evening and returns each morning. Vegetation dies back in winter and returns in spring. Illness arrives and, more often than not, ordinary participation in life eventually returns with recovery. Most intimately and most often of all, a person sleeps each night and wakes the next morning, a small, everyday demonstration that a radical reduction in recursive availability need not be terminal, repeated so routinely across a lifetime that it becomes one of the deepest sources of confidence that unavailability, in general, tends to be temporary.
This everyday confidence rests on a distinction that has been implicit throughout and is worth making fully explicit before turning to death. Sleep is not a cessation of recursivity, and the sleeping organism is not, even briefly, a nonrecursive thing that living organisation has temporarily vacated. A sleeping animal remains completely alive, continuously organised across all five mediations at once, its embodiment metabolising, its dwelling conditions still bearing on it, its material surroundings still in place around it, even where its multisymbolic engagement and much of its interrecursive availability have contracted almost to nothing for the duration. What happens in sleep is better described as a reconfiguration than a withdrawal: a specific, recoverable band of availability is reorganised rather than simply subtracted, layered on top of a continuity of living organisation that never stops. This is precisely why sleep can teach the lesson explored across both Gruffalo books at all: a periodic reconfiguration of availability can coexist with the uninterrupted continuation of life, and it is this coexistence that licenses the confidence with which a sleeper, or a creature watching over one, treats the reconfiguration as temporary.
Death is categorically different, and the difference is not one of degree. It is not a deeper version of the same reconfiguration that sleep undergoes, a heavier contraction along the same scale. What ceases in death is the irreversible loss of a living organisation's capacity to be remediated into recursive mesocosmic coordination at all, the very capacity that persisted unbroken beneath sleep's reconfigured availability and made its eventual return unsurprising. A body after death can resemble a sleeping body closely enough to have deceived observers throughout human history, closed eyes, stillness, unresponsiveness to ordinary address, and this resemblance is exactly what gives death its unique difficulty as an object of discernment. The signs that would ordinarily license confidence in eventual return, a body at rest, breathing suspended, no immediate response, are present in both cases, while the underlying condition they are being asked to indicate is entirely different in kind. Sleep repeatedly teaches that a periodic reconfiguration of availability can coexist with continuing life. Death confronts the living with a body in which the underlying capacity for remediation itself appears to have ceased, without offering any of the reliable perceptual signs that would let this categorical difference be discerned directly and with certainty. It is this specific difficulty, a resemblance at the level of surface signs concealing a categorical difference at the level of what those signs are supposed to indicate, that gives the returnability question surrounding death its peculiar and universal urgency, and that lets religion and ritual be read, in what follows, as sustained attempts to answer a question ordinary perception cannot settle on its own.
Death arrives, on this account, as the specific and devastating exception to everything the rest of living experience has taught. The fundamental problem it creates for the living can be stated as a single returnability question: is this departure like the others, one from which some form of return remains possible, or is it different in kind. Framing the question this way is not intended as a historical claim that returnability is demonstrably the origin of religion as such, a claim that would need far more evidence than a theoretical argument can supply on its own. The more defensible claim is narrower and, arguably, more interesting: returnability supplies an unusually powerful comparative problem around which an extraordinarily diverse range of religious and funerary practices can be organized, whatever their separate historical origins turn out to have been.
Resurrection answers the question with the return of the person as such. Reincarnation answers it with return through a transformed embodiment, the same underlying process continuing in a new form rather than the old one resuming unchanged. Ancestor relations answer it with continued or renewed interrecursive availability that does not depend on ordinary bodily return at all, the dead remaining reachable through prayer, offering, or consultation without ever being expected to walk back through the door. Ghosts represent an unwanted or unscheduled form of return, arriving without the consent or preparation that other traditions build carefully around the question. Belief in an afterlife displaces returnability elsewhere entirely, relocating the reunion to another place rather than promising it in this one.
Ritual's relation to returnability turns out to run in both directions, and the less obvious of the two directions may be the more original point. Ritual is not always in the business of making return possible; funerary ritual, in particular, often works to establish non-returnability with as much deliberate care as other rituals work to secure the opposite. The dead person will not walk through this particular door again, will not sleep in this particular bed again, will not take part in ordinary conversation again, and the practical, everyday modes of coordination that used to run between the living and this person have to be formally closed rather than left ambiguously open. Other, different modes of availability can remain, or be newly established, through graves that can be visited, names that continue to be spoken, stories that continue to be told, photographs that continue to be looked at, relics that continue to be handled, and ancestors or spirits that continue, in some traditions, to be addressed. Religious and ritual traditions, across an enormous range of otherwise unrelated cultural settings, therefore give remarkably differentiated answers to the underlying returnability question: yes, no, not yet, elsewhere, periodically, in another body, only symbolically, only ancestrally, only if summoned, or never again in any form whatsoever. Understood this way, ritual functions as a means of coordinating uncertainty about returnability, closing some possibilities and stabilizing others with as much deliberate structure as any other institution devoted to managing an otherwise unbearable uncertainty, rather than functioning merely as a symbolic representation of beliefs about death that were already settled before the ritual began.
XI. Returnability, Recursive Opening and the Persistence of Worlds
Ordinary life depends on enormous quantities of sedimented certainty that never rises to the level of conscious discernment at all, precisely because returnability has already been settled well enough that the question no longer needs asking. A person does not leave the house each morning wondering whether it will still exist on their return, and does not go to sleep each night wondering whether the walls of the bedroom will still be functioning as walls by morning. Returnability, working well, is exactly what allows this kind of question to stay closed rather than remaining open and available for constant reconsideration, and multimateriality, institutions, relationships, and habits all contribute to this closure by stabilizing expectations of persistence that would otherwise have to be checked over and over.
Catastrophe is what reopens these closed questions, all at once and without warning. A fire raises the question of whether there is still a home to return to. A war raises the question of whether a person can still return to their own town. Bereavement raises the question of whether a person can still return, in any recognizable sense, to a relationship that has just lost one of its two participants. A relationship's breakdown raises the question of whether a shared home is still, in any meaningful sense, a shared home rather than merely a building two people happen still to occupy. Displacement raises the sharpest version of the question, since it leaves unclear where, if anywhere, a return might now even be located. What makes disruptions of this kind so devastating is therefore not simply the loss of something presently held, which would be bad enough on its own, but the destruction of an anticipated future return that had, until the disruption, been sedimented deeply enough to have stopped being consciously discerned at all.
This connects returnability to a wider observation about temporal orientation that is worth stating explicitly. Returnability is a peculiar kind of future orientation, because it projects forward the persistence or eventual recoverability of something that is already known from the past, rather than projecting forward something wholly new. It is future-directed continuity with a past coordination, neither pure memory, which looks backward without needing anything to happen next, nor pure anticipation, which looks forward without needing anything to have already happened, but a hybrid of the two that only makes sense once both directions are held together.
This future orientation does not have a single fixed range. Returnability has a bandwidth that varies with the mediation and the relationship in question, and a single organism carries many such bandwidths at once, layered and running on entirely different clocks. A held breath must be answered within seconds or embodiment itself is threatened. A sleeper's returnability to full waking coordination is measured in hours. A migratory bird's returnability to a nesting site spans a year. A friendship can go quiet for a decade and still, on the right occasion, resume as though barely interrupted, its particular interrecursive history proving durable across a gap that would end a more recently formed acquaintance. What counts as an ordinary, unremarkable absence on one bandwidth would register as a crisis of returnability on another, and part of what recursive discernment is doing, continuously and mostly without being noticed, is tracking which bandwidth currently applies to a given absence, so that a friendship's silence and a held breath are not read by the same clock.
XII. A Dynamic Five by Five by Three
Enough has now been established to return, with a fuller vocabulary, to the objection raised at the start of this article against treating the five by five by three as a static grid. Its configuration changes continuously with the aspect of the counterpart currently salient, with the organism doing the discerning, with the history of the relationship in question, with metabolic state, with current stakes, with temporal phase, with dwelling conditions, with the degree of material stabilization already achieved, with the degree of symbolic articulation available, and with whatever coordination has just previously occurred and has therefore already altered what comes next.
Recursivity levels cannot be assigned once and for all to organisms any more than recursive counterpart types can be assigned once and for all to entities. The mouse of the first Gruffalo book moves fluidly from absorbed L1 coordination, walking through the wood without any particular vigilance, up through increasingly elaborate recursive engagement as danger rises, and back down again once the danger has passed, and this fluidity is itself one of the central discoveries the story has to offer. Where recursive escalation has been remedial, mounted specifically to close a felt misalignment, as it was for the mouse startled into inventing a monster, the return to baseline is exactly the point, and sometimes the most intelligent available outcome is to stop asking further questions and eat the nut, closing down an inquiry that has already done all the work it needed to do. This should not be generalised into a claim that every instance of recursive engagement in the architecture answers to the same telos. A long relationship, a sustained ritual practice, or a mathematical proof does not misfire by remaining at high recursivity indefinitely; nothing in any of them is waiting to be resolved back down to L1. The pull toward baseline belongs specifically to remedial symbolization, coordination mounted to fix a particular misalignment, and not to recursive engagement as such.
Returnability itself depends on exactly this kind of closure being available. A world in which everything had to be recursively reverified without pause, continuously and without any possibility of settling a question once and for all, would be unlivable for any organism operating within it, since no capacity would ever be left over for anything beyond the reverification itself. Stable worlds permit recursive closure precisely because enough has already been discerned, and enough of that discernment has proven reliable enough for long enough, that the question can be set down rather than carried indefinitely. Living beings reopen closed questions only when circumstances actually demand it, and the discernment of when a question needs reopening is itself one further instance, arguably the most consequential instance, of the very process this article has been describing throughout.
XIII. The World to Which We Return
Return, once more, to the mouse. It sits in the deep dark wood and eats its nut, and that small, unremarkable event now carries almost the entire argument within it. The mouse has discerned the current state of its own dwelling, discerned the absence of any newly salient predator, discerned a counterpart that offers nourishment without offering any reciprocal threat, and, on the strength of all three discernments together, allowed its own recursive escalation to subside because nothing currently at stake continues to warrant it.
The Gruffalo's Child adds the movement in the opposite direction, leaving shelter rather than settling into it, tolerating uncertainty rather than resolving it immediately, becoming frightened and then finding a way back regardless. Widen the frame once more, beyond either book, and the same structure keeps reappearing at every scale a living being can occupy. A child returns to bed at the end of a long day. A hunter returns to a gathering place built to outlast any single expedition. A traveller returns home after time away. A pilgrim returns to a shrine that has stood, deliberately, for longer than any single pilgrimage requires. A sleeper returns each morning to waking. A bereaved person confronts, without the comfort of any of the preceding examples, the apparent impossibility of an expected return that will not now occur. A religious tradition asks, on behalf of everyone who has ever lost someone, whether death itself belongs among the returnable departures or stands permanently outside them.
The two concepts developed here can now be brought together in a single closing formulation. Recursive discernment concerns what coordination is currently possible, and how the act of discerning that possibility changes what becomes possible next. Returnability concerns whether coordination that has become unavailable can become available again, and it is one of the most consequential single objects recursive discernment ever turns its attention toward, because so much of what makes a life livable, sleep, exploration, risk, settlement, ritual, and the slow work of grief, depends on how that particular question gets answered. Living, on this account, is not only a matter of continually discerning what is currently available; it is also a matter of continually discerning what can safely be left, what can be trusted to remain in place during an absence, and what, if lost, might still one day be returned to.
