Introduction: Predicting Unpredictability

Every World Cup final arrives preceded by an industry built entirely on the premise that the outcome can be known in advance. Betting markets price every possible score line to the fraction of a percentage point. Supercomputers run tens of thousands of simulations. Expected-goals models rate every chance created across a tournament. Pundit panels argue late into the night. Newspapers across three continents publish confident forecasts under confident headlines. Billions of dollars, and considerably more attention, are staked on the claim that the future of a football match is, in principle, knowable before it happens.

This article, which I’ve written on 19th July 2026 at 14:00 Central European Summer Time, has three elements. I show that predicting the World Champions is ontologically impossible. I explore why this ontological impossibility of future prediction makes football so much fun to watch. And then I go and predict the winner of with 100% accuracy.

Tonight’s match, between Spain and Argentina, played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, is as good an occasion as any to ask why this industry keeps failing at the one thing it exists to do. Not failing completely, the serious models are usually closer to right than a coin flip, and Spain's favourite status ahead of this final is not baseless. But failing reliably enough, and dramatically enough, that every tournament produces at least one moment prediction did not see coming. Giant-killings occur. Overwhelming favourites collapse. A single moment reorganises an entire tournament. Teams that looked tactically flawless in the group stage look ordinary in the final. Every four years the same lesson gets rediscovered: football will not become fully predictable, no matter how much computing power is thrown at it.

The usual explanations for this are complexity, randomness, and luck. This article argues that none of them reaches the actual reason, and that the real explanation is not a matter of degree at all but a matter of kind. Football sits at the far end of a spectrum most prediction never properly reckons with, the spectrum running from processes that do not respond to being predicted, through processes that respond to being predicted by adjusting themselves, to processes in which multiple parties are simultaneously predicting each other, predicting each other's prediction, and adjusting accordingly, in a loop that has no stable place to stop. Football, more purely than almost any other major sport, lives entirely in that third condition. Understanding why explains not only tonight's final but why no tactical revolution, no statistical breakthrough, and no supercomputer will ever finally crack the game.

The Wrong Explanation, and the Right One

The conventional answer to why football resists prediction is complexity. Twenty-two players, millions of possible interactions, continuous play, an enormous number of variables, surely, the thinking goes, this sheer combinatorial scale is what defeats forecasting models.

Complexity alone explains remarkably little. Weather systems are complex, and meteorology, while imperfect, has grown steadily more accurate for exactly the kind of physical system weather is. Protein folding is complex, and computational biology has made extraordinary progress modelling it. Traffic flow is complex, and it can be simulated with real predictive power. None of these domains behave the way football behaves, because complexity describes how many parts a system has, not what happens when the system is told what has been predicted about it. A weather system does not change its own behaviour because a forecaster has issued a forecast. Football does. That is the missing distinction, and it is ontological rather than merely a matter of scale.

Coordination of any kind falls into one of three fundamentally different situations. The first is nonrecursive: planets orbiting, chemical reactions unfolding, gravity pulling. The moon does not alter its orbit because an astronomer has predicted an eclipse. Prediction has no causal purchase on the system being predicted, which is exactly what makes these domains maximally forecastable, a good enough model, run forward, simply describes what will happen, because nothing about the running of the model feeds back into the thing it is modelling.

The second is selfrecursive: a single organism continually adjusting itself in light of its own condition. A patient reacts to the progress of an illness. A trader revises a strategy after a loss. A distance runner adjusts pace in response to fatigue that is itself changing as the race continues. Prediction becomes harder here, because the system under observation is not static, it is a living process modifying itself over time. But it remains directed at one recursive centre. There is still, in an important sense, a single thing to be modelling.

The third is interrecursive, and it is a different situation in kind rather than merely a harder version of the second. Multiple recursive centres are now reading each other continuously, each treating the others' likely next move as an input to its own, each aware, at least implicitly, that it is itself being read in turn. A prediction made inside this situation does not sit outside the system describing it from a safe distance. It becomes part of what the system has to respond to. This is the condition football lives in almost without interruption, and it is worth being precise about why that makes football's unpredictability qualitatively different from the unpredictability of a selfrecursive system like a single distance runner, let alone a nonrecursive one like the weather.

Football as Radical Interrecursivity

Football is not, in the relevant sense, twenty-two athletes running variously toward a ball. It is recursive anticipation running in every direction simultaneously, sustained continuously for ninety minutes with almost no pause in which any single actor's situation holds still long enough to be cleanly modelled.

Each player on the pitch is, at every moment, reading teammates, opponents, the referee, the coaching staff, the crowd, the current scoreline, the time remaining, the substitutions already made and still available, their own fatigue and that of the players around them, and the tactical adjustments both sides have made since kickoff. Each player is simultaneously an observer and something observed, a predictor and something being predicted, an adaptor and something being adapted to. There is no fixed vantage point from which the game can be read once and then simply followed. The vantage points are themselves moving, and moving partly in response to each other.

This is what separates football from a sport built around discrete, resettable confrontations. A single football possession does not resolve into a clean outcome the way a single pitch in baseball does, or a single point in tennis. It flows continuously into the next phase of play, carrying forward every adjustment every player has just made in response to what everyone else just did, with no natural reset point at which the recursive cascade pauses and a fresh, independent trial begins. This continuous, unsegmented, many-body interrecursivity is football's defining structural feature, and it is the feature every serious attempt to predict the game eventually runs into.

The Hidden Non-Recursive Sediment

None of this means prediction models are worthless, and it would be a mistake to read the argument so far as dismissive of the entire industry surrounding a final like tonight's. Most prediction actually works by relying on something that is no longer recursive at all, even though it was produced by recursive processes in the past.

Player age, height, sprint speed, international caps, prior tournament performance, league statistics, transfer valuations, historical head-to-head records: every one of these is a piece of sedimented history. They were, at the moment they were produced, the outcome of intense interrecursive contests, a player's pace was tested against real opponents, a team's historical record was built match by match against real adversaries who were themselves adapting throughout. But once recorded, these facts stop being recursive. They harden into stable, citable properties that a model can treat the way a physicist treats a measured constant.

This is precisely how modern prediction models work, and it is why they perform meaningfully better than chance: they project sedimented recursive achievement forward as though it were a fixed property, and for a great deal of the time, that projection holds up reasonably well, because a team that has been excellent for years usually has real, durable reasons for having been excellent. The method works right up until the moment living interrecursivity begins again, which is to say, right up until kickoff, at which point the sediment becomes only the starting condition for a process the sediment itself cannot forecast.

Spain and Argentina: What the Sediment Says

Tonight's final is an unusually rich illustration of exactly this distinction, because the sedimented case for each side is strong, different in character, and directly in tension with the other.

Spain's sediment is defensive and structural. They have conceded a single goal across seven matches and produced six clean sheets, the most by any side at a single World Cup, with an expected-goals-against figure of roughly 0.31 per game, the lowest of any team in the tournament and among the lowest recorded since 1966. This is not simply a possession side that likes the ball; the Guardian's data analysis of the tournament makes the sharper point that Spain's possession is organised specifically to prevent transitions, with press-resistant buildup through Rodri and Fabián Ruiz, an unusually well-drilled rest defence, and a counter-press that restores control almost immediately after any loss of the ball. That structure produced a controlled 2–0 semi-final win over a French side built around elite individual and transitional threat, which Spanish commentary has treated as the decisive proof that the team's method survives contact with a truly dangerous opponent, not only with weaker ones. Spain's route through the tournament was not flawless, a goalless opening draw against Cape Verde and a group-stage win over Uruguay that owed something to a goalkeeping error are both part of the record, but El País's own reading is that the team's subsequent evolution, coping without Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams at full fitness for long stretches, demonstrates adaptive range rather than dependence on any single configuration.

Argentina's sediment is a different kind of evidence entirely: not structural control but a sustained, repeated capacity to win from bad positions late. Argentina have won all seven of their matches, the first side to do so at a single World Cup since Brazil in 2002, and their route through the knockout rounds is one of the most dramatic on record. A 111th-minute own goal settled their opening knockout match. In the round of sixteen, Argentina trailed 2–0 with roughly a quarter of the match remaining and became the first side ever to overturn that specific deficit and win in regulation, Enzo Fernández scoring the winner in the ninety-second minute. In the quarter-final, Julián Álvarez scored an extra-time goal from outside the box in the 112th minute before Lautaro Martínez sealed the win. Against England in the semi-final, Fernández equalised in the eighty-fifth minute and Martínez scored the winner in the ninety-second. Every one of Argentina's knockout victories has been decided in second-half stoppage time or extra time. Lionel Messi has played every minute of every knockout match, including two that went to extra time, and has produced eight goals and four assists across the tournament. Argentina's own press has treated this pattern less as fortune than as evidence of a team that has learned, across a generation that shares seventeen members with the 2022 winning squad, how to keep functioning once a match stops resembling the plan.

Both bodies of sediment are real. Neither determines what will happen tonight. Spain's record says: this team is exceptionally difficult to create good chances against. Argentina's record says: this team has repeatedly demonstrated that a match is not over until it is over, and has assembled, in Messi, the single player in the tournament most capable of producing a decisive action from very little. What neither record can tell anyone is how these two specific bodies of accumulated history will behave once they are placed in the same ninety minutes and begin reading each other in real time. Spain will be trying to predict Argentina. Argentina will be trying to predict Spain predicting Argentina. Spain will be adjusting to what they expect Argentina to have anticipated from them. This cascade has no natural stopping point, and it is precisely the part of the match that no supercomputer, however many simulations it runs, is actually simulating, it is projecting the sediment forward, not the live interrecursive cascade the sediment merely sets the stage for.

A further layer of sediment complicates the picture in an unusually direct way tonight: Messi has reportedly faced thirteen of the twenty-six players in Spain's squad before, largely through his long career at Barcelona, and Argentine coverage has understandably framed this as a source of insight into Spanish tendencies. The knowledge, however, is not one-directional. Spanish players and coaching staff know Messi's game with comparable intimacy, several having been formed in or professionally connected to the same Barcelona football culture that shaped him. This does not cancel the familiarity out; it deepens it into something closer to mutual legibility than one-sided advantage, which is itself a distinctively interrecursive outcome, both sides know more about what the other is likely to attempt, and both know that the other possesses similar knowledge, which tends to push each side toward second-order adjustment rather than straightforward execution of a known plan.

The final's preparation has also not been entirely free of the kind of contingency this article's account of dwelling would recognise as its own source of uncertainty: a pre-final Spanish training session was reportedly suspended under a local storm protocol, modestly reducing the squad's final on-field preparation, though without any indication of a serious competitive consequence. Manager Luis de la Fuente's public response, framing the disruption with studied calm, joking that the helicopter journey afterward concerned him more than the final itself, is itself a small, deliberate act of managing external legibility, presenting pressure as confirmation that the team belongs on this stage rather than as a threat requiring visible concern.

Argentina, meanwhile, face a selection question created directly by their own semi-final drama. Substitutes transformed that match, with Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez both scoring late, and Scaloni must now decide how much of that comeback configuration should become the starting one against Spain, whether Lautaro starts alongside or instead of Julián Álvarez, altering Argentina's pressing intensity, physical presence, and penalty-area threat, or whether he stays in reserve, preserving a proven, if now less surprising, source of late-match disruption. This is not incidental team news. It is a decision about how much of Argentina's own sedimented recursive history to convert into tonight's starting conditions, made by a coach who is himself trying to anticipate how Spain will set up to stop whichever version of Argentina takes the pitch.

The most quotable summary of this tension, from BBC Sport's Chris Sutton, captures the shape of the disagreement rather than resolving it: "Argentina will bring chaos but Spain will bring calm... and calmness will win the day." That is one reasonable bet on how the cascade resolves. Alan Shearer's competing view, that Argentina's mentality and Messi give them the tools to stop Spain regardless of the tactical balance, is another reasonable bet on the same unresolved cascade. Both are informed. Neither is a fact about tonight yet.

There Is No Magic Formula

Every football generation believes, briefly, that it has found the permanent answer. Total Football. Catenaccio. High pressing. The false nine. Gegenpressing. Guardiola's positional play. Expected-goals-driven recruitment. Each of these produced a real, measurable advantage when it first appeared, and each advantage decayed on a broadly similar schedule.

The reason is not that these ideas were wrong. It is that football is an interrecursive ecology, and any advantage that depends on opponents not yet understanding it is, by definition, temporary. Rival coaches study the innovation. Players move clubs and carry the method with them. Youth academies imitate what is winning. Journalists explain the new idea in detail; broadcasters analyse it point by point until casual viewers can describe it. Within a few seasons, what began as a private insight has become part of the shared, public ecology every team now has to account for, and the competitive advantage it once conferred has been absorbed into the baseline expectation everyone plays against. The innovation has not stopped working in any mechanical sense. It has stopped being unread.

Guardiola and the Recursive Arms Race

Pep Guardiola's positional football is the cleanest case study available for this dynamic. Its passing triangles, deliberate spatial overloads, and disciplined rest-defence structure were transformative when they first reached full expression, producing periods of near-total dominance that looked, briefly, like a solved game.

They did not stay unsolved. Opponents studied the shape relentlessly, adapted their pressing triggers specifically to disrupt it, and in time enough clubs employed variations of the same principles that the original version lost its distinguishing edge, not because the underlying football was no longer sound, but because the surrounding ecology had caught up to it. This is the general pattern football's history keeps repeating, and it is worth naming directly: football evolves the way biological populations evolve, through continuous, open-ended arms races between adaptation and counter-adaptation, rather than the way an engineered system improves, by converging on a single optimal solution and staying there. An engineering problem, solved, stays solved. A football innovation, solved by the opposition, stops being an innovation.

Why Moneyball Could Never Work in Football

The clearest way to see what makes football's interrecursivity structurally different from other sports is to ask why the statistical revolution that transformed baseball has never been replicated in football with anything like the same force.

Moneyball succeeded in early-2000s baseball because baseball, for long stretches, decomposes into repeated, largely isolated dyadic confrontations, a pitcher against a batter, resolved into a discrete, countable outcome, largely independent of what happened in the previous at-bat or what will happen in the next one. This structure allows individual performance to be measured with real precision and allows undervalued individual contributors to be identified and assembled, almost additively, into a stronger collective unit than their reputations alone would suggest.

Football offers no equivalent decomposition. Every pass reorganises the space around it, the pressure on both sides, the confidence of the passer and the receiver, the momentum of the passage of play, the options available to every other player on the pitch, and the defensive shape of the opposing team, all at once and continuously. There is no clean, isolable unit of football analogous to an at-bat. A statistically undervalued individual, dropped into a football team, does not simply add their measured contribution to the total; they change, and are changed by, the entire coordinative structure around them the moment they take the field. A football "island of misfit toys," assembled purely from undervalued individual metrics, would not quietly outperform expectations the way Oakland's roster did. It would most likely fail to cohere at all, because the whole in football continuously reorganises the parts, rather than the parts summing to the whole.

Comparing Sports by Recursive Density

Placing football against other major sports on a rough scale of interrecursive density clarifies exactly what makes it distinctive, rather than simply asserting that it is.

Athletics events, run in lanes against a clock, are closer to selfrecursive than interrecursive: each athlete is primarily managing their own body against a fixed external standard. Tennis and boxing sit much higher, built around sustained, continuous, high-stakes dyadic reading between two opponents. Baseball and cricket are interrecursive in concentrated bursts, a real, intense confrontation between pitcher and batter, or bowler and batter, but structured as a sequence of discrete, resetting episodes rather than a continuous flow. Basketball, rugby, and ice hockey sit at increasing density along a spectrum of many-body, continuously flowing interrecursivity, each with fewer stoppages and more simultaneous mutual reading than the sport before it. Football sits at the extreme end of this progression: twenty-two players, continuous play, minimal segmentation, almost no repeated isolated encounters comparable to an at-bat or a service point. This is not a claim that football is more exciting than these other sports, a judgment this article has no need to make. It is a structural claim about why football analytics, for all their genuine sophistication, remain persistently weaker at outcome prediction than baseball analytics ever needed to be. The two sports are not offering the same prediction problem at different levels of difficulty. They are offering different kinds of problem.

Prediction Changes the Future, and the Ecology of Legibility

Interrecursive systems generally, not only football, have this same unsettling property: publishing a prediction about them can change the very conditions the prediction was based on. Election forecasts can alter turnout. Financial market predictions can move the market they describe. Military strategy anticipated by an opponent stops being effective strategy. Poker tells, once known, stop telling anything true. Football belongs to this same family. If every opponent has studied and internalised Spain's preferred passing patterns in enough detail, Spain must vary them or lose the advantage those patterns once conferred. If Argentina expects Spain to vary their patterns in a specific way, Argentina's own preparation has to account for the variation rather than the pattern itself. Prediction, in an interrecursive system, does not sit outside the system describing it. It becomes one more input the system has to metabolise, which is a large part of why a sufficiently accurate prediction about football tends to become less accurate the moment it becomes widely known.

This is also why elite football is best understood not simply as an attempt to predict the opponent but as a continuous, active management of one's own predictability. Every serious team pursues two goals simultaneously: maximum internal legibility, so that teammates can read each other's intentions instantly and coordinate without hesitation, and minimum external legibility, so that opponents remain as uncertain as possible about what is coming next. Spain's rotating combinations on each flank, Yamal and Porro on one side, Baena and Cucurella on the other, exist partly to solve this dual problem: familiar enough internally that the players read each other automatically, varied enough externally that Argentina cannot simply set a fixed defensive plan against a single, predictable shape. This is the ecology every elite side is operating inside, whether or not it is named this way on the touchline.

Why Commentary and Statistics Cannot Capture the Game

The same recursive ontology explains a feature of football culture that rarely gets connected to prediction at all: the persistent, structural gap between watching football and talking about football afterward.

Commentary does not describe the match as it happens so much as reconstruct it, moments after the fact, into a symbolic narrative with turning points, momentum shifts, and explanatory causes, a form the live, unfolding interrecursive ecology never actually possessed while it was happening. Statistics do something similar in a more numerical register: goals, assists, completed passes, distance covered, expected-goals values are all residues, the settled outcomes of recursive processes whose actual moment-to-moment organisation, who was reading whom, who anticipated what, which fractional hesitation opened which gap, has already vanished by the time the number is recorded. This is not a failure of commentary or statistics specifically. It is what happens whenever a symbolic system tries to capture a process that was never symbolic while it was occurring. The commentators covering tonight's final are not, strictly speaking, describing the football. They are producing, in close to real time, a symbolic approximation of a game whose actual organisation exceeds any approximation available to them.

This is also why statistics have never explained what makes a player like Messi exceptional, in a way any serious observer of the game already senses even without a theoretical vocabulary for it. Goals, assists, touches, expected-goals contribution: these are residues of decisions, not descriptions of the recursive discernment that produced them. A statistic can tell you that a pass was completed into a dangerous area. It cannot tell you how the passer read three defenders' anticipated movements half a second before making it, because that reading has already dissolved into the outcome by the time anyone is counting.

Why We Love Football, and the Ontology of Wonder

If football's unpredictability is a structural feature rather than a solvable flaw, it is worth asking directly what that feature is actually for, why a game built this way commands the emotional attachment it does, across more of the world than any other sport.

A perfectly predictable football match would be closer to a formality than an event. If a sufficiently powerful algorithm could correctly forecast every final in advance, the actual staging of the tournament would become close to unnecessary, an elaborate, expensive confirmation of something already known. Football's emotional force depends specifically on the fact that this is not the situation anyone is actually in. Hope, for a supporter, is not naive misunderstanding of the odds; it is an accurate registration of the fact that the interrecursive cascade has truly not resolved yet, and that no one, including the team itself, currently knows how it will.

Aristotle located the origin of philosophical wonder in the experience of an expected outcome failing to occur, the moment reality declines to follow the path assumed for it. Football, more reliably than almost any other institution in contemporary life, manufactures this experience on a predictable schedule and a global stage. Every upset, every impossible late goal, every tactical surprise, every shootout decided by a save nobody predicted, is a small, repeated demonstration that the future has not yet been fixed. A World Cup final is not simply a contest to determine which team is better. It is one of the largest recurring public rituals of unresolved recursive uncertainty that exists, and the wonder it produces is not a side effect of the competition. It is close to the entire point of staging it.

The Final: Reading the Interrecursive Cascade

Everything argued above converges on tonight's match, and it is worth being precise about what a responsible reading of the evidence can and cannot say before kickoff.

No serious prediction is entirely wrong. Every one of them captures some real piece of sedimented recursive history: Spain's defensive suppression is real and repeatable; Argentina's late-match resilience is real and repeatedly demonstrated; the tactical battles identified by every major preview, Rodri and Fabián Ruiz against Argentina's midfield trio, Yamal and Porro against Argentina's left side, Spain's high line against Messi and Álvarez in behind, are genuine points of pressure that will matter. Former Spain manager Julen Lopetegui's own reading of the tactical picture places particular weight on Spain's calm resistance to the first wave of pressure: if Argentina press high and Spain's back four and goalkeeper find the pass that bypasses it, the pressing itself becomes the opening Spain exploit, which leaves Scaloni with an uncomfortable choice between pressing high and risking exactly that outcome, or defending deeper and conceding the prolonged territorial control Spain are built to convert. Argentine tactical coverage answers this not by disputing the structural picture but by locating Argentina's route to disruption inside it, preventing Rodri from receiving on his preferred side, using De Paul to interrupt his rhythm directly, and accepting that a scrappier, more physically contested match may suit Argentina better than a clean one, even if it does not suit the version of Argentina most previews expect to see. Both readings can be correct simultaneously, which is itself the point: the tactical battle is not a single question with a single answer waiting to be found in the data, but a live contest that will be settled, if it is settled at all, somewhere inside the ninety minutes rather than in any preview written before them.

The Opta model's assessment, giving Spain roughly forty-five per cent to win in ninety minutes against Argentina's twenty-six, with a twenty-nine per cent chance of a draw after regulation, and close to sixty per cent overall once extra time and penalties are folded in, is a serious, well-grounded synthesis of exactly this sedimented evidence. It is not, and cannot be, a description of what will actually happen once the two sides begin reading each other live.

The match states most likely to matter illustrate the same point from a different angle. If Spain score first, their structural advantage compounds: Argentina are forced to commit players forward, opening exactly the transition spaces Spain's counter-press is built to exploit, and a 2–0 or 2–1 Spanish win becomes the most probable path. If the score remains level deep into the second half, the interrecursive weather shifts in Argentina's favour without a single Spanish structural weakness having actually appeared, missed Spanish chances start to read as failure, Argentine resistance starts to read as evidence, and a team built to make the most of a small number of late opportunities gains exactly the conditions it has shown, four times this tournament, it knows how to use. If Argentina score first, they gain licence to compress space, slow the tempo, and force Spain into the uncomfortable position of a team that must attack against a side organised to make attacking uncomfortable.

Two further states deserve mention because they show the same logic operating at the extremes. If the match becomes genuinely open, transitions succeeding on both sides, defensive shape repeatedly broken, this is, paradoxically, the scenario that most erodes Spain's systemic advantage even though Spain may still generate the larger volume of chances within it, because an open game reduces the positional control their entire method is built around and increases the relative weight of individual moments, which is exactly the currency Messi and Yamal both deal in. And if the match remains unresolved into penalties, Spain's accumulated structural superiority is compressed into a small number of discrete actions in which that superiority stops mattering in any distributed sense; Argentina would likely enter that scenario with real psychological comfort, carrying Emiliano Martínez's penalty-saving reputation and the memory of 2022, though it is worth noting that historical shootout records are consistently given more predictive weight by commentators than the small sample sizes involved can actually support.

None of these scenarios is foretold by the sediment alone. Each becomes more or less likely only once the sediment starts interacting with what actually happens on the pitch, and that interaction is precisely the part no dataset held before kickoff.

The clearest way to state the underlying asymmetry, and the one nearly every serious preview converges on from a different direction, is this: Spain are easier to justify before the match. Argentina may be easier to explain after it. That is not a difference between good and bad analysis. It is the exact shape of the distinction this whole argument has been building toward, between recursive history that has sedimented into something stable enough to cite, and living interrecursivity that has not yet happened and cannot be read from the outside, no matter how much of the former has been gathered in advance.

The Press as Part of the Cascade

One further layer deserves attention before kickoff, because it is usually treated as commentary sitting outside the match rather than as a further instance of the same recursive structure the match itself will display: the national press covering the two sides is not neutrally describing a shared reality. Each is producing a framing shaped by its own position inside the contest.

The Spanish press's dominant narrative, articulated most fully by El País, is that this Spain side has moved past the old stereotype of a possession team that only wins when conditions are ideal, that the record now shows a team with several distinct ways of winning rather than one fragile method requiring every attacking player at full capacity simultaneously.
