The mind–body problem is usually treated as something modernity inherited and has struggled ever since to solve. This article argues that the diagnosis is backwards. What modernity produced was not a problem awaiting solution but a classificatory operation, a SWIPE, a split world with incommensurably paired epistemologies, that manufactured the problem in the course of manufacturing its two terms. Body accumulated matter, nature, objectivity, causality, mechanism, and the natural sciences; mind accumulated meaning, culture, subjectivity, interpretation, history, and the human sciences. Once the accumulation had occurred, their relation became a standing theoretical emergency. The article rejects the conventional shorthand that blames Descartes, arguing instead that the distinctively modern, institutionally distributed form of the mind/body SWIPE, as opposed to its seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophical antecedents, crystallized, alongside its better-known relative nature/culture, during the nineteenth-century professionalization of physiology, neurology, and psychiatry. It then traces two centuries of repair work, interactionism, psychosomatics, embodiment, structural violence, local biology, hybridity, coproduction, and entanglement, arguing that each repair concept, however empirically valuable, typically leaves the underlying partition standing. Drawing on Living Value Theory's account of five irreducible mediations operating across five levels of recursivity, the article proposes that the mind–body problem substantially dissolves once living is redescribed as recursive mediation rather than as two domains awaiting reconnection.
Introduction: The Problem That Refuses to Die
Few problems in the Western intellectual tradition have proved as durable as the question of how mind and body belong together. Philosophy asks how mental states relate to neural ones. Neuroscience asks where, in a physical brain, subjective experience could possibly arise. Psychiatry asks whether a depression is a disorder of neurotransmission, of meaning, or of both, and what "of both" could actually mean. Medicine asks how psychological stress becomes physiological illness. Anthropology asks how culture becomes biology, and biology becomes culture, without either simply replacing the other. Feminist theory asks how a sexed body relates to a gendered identity. Political and medical anthropology together ask how structural violence "gets under the skin." Science and technology studies ask how the human relates to its machines, prostheses, and data doubles. These read as different problems, addressed to different literatures, but they are, this article argues, recurring instances of a single, underlying operation whose products are the two terms whose relationship then has to be explained.
The odd historical fact bearing on this claim is not that the problem persists, but that it persists in exact proportion to the sophistication of the attempts to solve it. Interactionism yields to psychosomatic medicine. Psychosomatic medicine yields to embodiment. Embodiment yields to biosociality, local biology, and the biopsychosocial model. Nature/culture yields to cyborgs, hybrids, and assemblages. Every generation announces that dualism has finally been overcome, and every generation's overcoming becomes, within a decade or two, another vocabulary that the next generation will have to overcome in turn. A problem that keeps requiring a new solution, indefinitely, is either unusually difficult or badly specified. This article argues for the second possibility, and does so by drawing a distinction on which everything else depends.
A distinction separates things for some analytic purpose: heart rate from mood, a symptom from its meaning. A dualism treats two terms as significantly and often hierarchically opposed. A SWIPE does something more specific than either: it makes a distinction simultaneously ontological and epistemological, assigning its two sides different kinds of reality and different legitimate ways of knowing them, and it does this durably enough that the distinction stops functioning as a working tool and starts functioning as a fact about the furniture of the world (Ecks 2026a). This definition matters because the argument that follows is not another indictment of binary thinking as such. A rough-and-ready body/mind distinction is often harmless, sometimes indispensable, and has been used without apparent difficulty by people who never spent a moment wondering whether matter and meaning belong to different orders of reality. The distinction becomes a SWIPE only once something further happens to it: once body is aligned with matter, nature, object, causality, measurement, and the natural sciences, while mind is aligned with meaning, culture, subject, interpretation, history, and the human sciences, and once crossing from one alignment to the other starts to look like a philosophical achievement rather than an unremarkable fact of living.
Modernity did not discover the mind–body problem and then spend four centuries failing to solve it. Modern classificatory practice helped construct two domains whose subsequent relationship then inevitably looked mysterious, and a great deal of what passes for progress on the problem has consisted of increasingly resourceful ways of re-establishing a connection that the classification itself had made to look absent. The clearest illustration of this dynamic is not a single text but an entire subfield built almost entirely from the labor of reconnection. When Nancy Scheper-Hughes and Margaret Lock proposed, in 1987, that anthropology needed to attend simultaneously to an individual body, a social body, and a body politic, they were not inventing three new objects (Scheper-Hughes and Lock 1987). They were naming three fragments of one living process that four centuries of prior classification had already separated, and then arguing, with real theoretical ingenuity, for stapling the fragments back together. The mindful body was a repair. So, this article will argue, was nearly everything that came both before and after it.
This is not the first time this author has made a version of this argument, and the earlier version is worth acknowledging before proceeding, because it shows what was missing. In 2009, reviewing Margaret Lock and Judith Farquhar's edited volume Beyond the Body Proper: Reading the Anthropology of Material Life, anthropology's "best and most comprehensive anti-Cartesian manifesto to date," this author objected that its blanket rejection of mind/body dualism was politically self-defeating: struggles against racism, gender hierarchy, and discrimination against people with disabilities have historically depended on insisting that a person's worth and political standing are independent of their bodily attributes, which is to say, on a version of exactly the distinction the volume asked anthropology to abandon (Ecks 2009). That argument was correct as far as it went, but it lacked a vocabulary for saying what, exactly, should be kept and what discarded. The missing distinction was not between keeping Descartes and discarding him. It was between a distinction and a SWIPE. Differentiating bodily attributes from thought, intention, worth, or political capacity is not, on the account developed below, the problem; a polity that refused to distinguish a person's skin color from their competence to reason would have no grounds left on which to call racism an error. The problem begins only when such a distinction is converted into an independently constituted ontological domain and assigned its own separate epistemology. Seventeen years on, this article's answer to its own earlier essay is that anthropology never needed to choose between Cartesian dualism and its wholesale abolition. What political and analytic work actually requires is differentiation without SWIPE, and Section II returns to Beyond the Body Proper directly to show what that distinction changes.
I. What Exactly Is a Mind–Body SWIPE?
The place to begin is with something almost deliberately mundane. There plainly are situations in which "body" and "mind" pick out different, useful things. A headache and a thought about tomorrow's meeting are not the same phenomenon. Muscular contraction and the memory of a childhood summer are distinguishable in ordinary, unproblematic ways, and a theory that refused to distinguish them at all would not be subtle; it would simply be wrong. Living Value Theory (LVT) is not a brief for indiscriminate holism, and mistaking it for one would blunt rather than sharpen its diagnostic force (Ecks 2026a). The question that actually matters is not whether a distinction between body and mind can be drawn. It is what happens to a distinction after it has been drawn, and whether the drawing has stopped at a working differentiation or continued on into a full partition.
A distinction becomes a SWIPE to the extent that five further operations accumulate around it. It ontologizes: the two terms come to be treated as different kinds of reality rather than as aspects distinguished for convenience. It epistemologizes: different methods, different evidentiary standards, and different professional trainings become attached to each term, so that knowing the body and knowing the mind cease to look like the same kind of activity performed on different objects. It exhaustivizes: phenomena are placed under pressure to belong primarily to one side or the other, so that a chronic pain condition, for example, is asked whether it is "really" physical or "really" psychological, as though the answer had to be one or the other. It autonomizes: each side comes to be treated as intelligible in principle without reference to the other, a mind that could in theory be studied by introspection or hermeneutics alone, a body that could in theory be exhausted by mechanism and measurement alone. And it secondary-relationalizes: the connection between the two sides, which was never absent in the first place, becomes something that now requires its own additional theory, its own vocabulary, its own subfield.
Mind/body is an unusually powerful case because it does not operate alone. It recruits, and is recruited by, an entire family of adjacent distinctions, and the recruitment is precisely what gives the partition its durability. Matter aligns with mind's opposite; so, more often than not, do nature, organism, objectivity, exteriority, mechanism, cause, measurability, universality, and the natural sciences. Meaning aligns with mind; so, more often than not, do culture, person, subjectivity, interiority, intention, reason, interpretability, historical variability, and the human sciences. None of these alignments is perfectly coherent, and none of them holds with the same force in every period or every discipline; a materialist psychology and an idealist physiology have both, at different moments, existed. That incoherence is itself important, because SWIPE is not the claim that Western modernity possessed one tidy, fully consistent binary ontology waiting to be unmasked. The claim is narrower and more historically defensible: that partial, imperfect alignments among these many distinctions became mutually reinforcing, so that invoking one term tended, defeasibly but reliably, to pull several of the others along with it, and that the pulling became strong enough, in enough institutional settings, to generate the exhaustivizing and autonomizing operations described above.
Once such a partition exists, an entire vocabulary becomes not merely available but necessary. Interaction, mediation, influence, expression, translation, incorporation, embodiment, bridge, interface, feedback, coproduction, hybridity, entanglement: each of these words names a genuine process, and this article does not propose to retire any of them. But their sheer proliferation, and the historical fact that each arrives billed as a corrective to its predecessor, is itself worth investigating rather than accepting as evidence of cumulative progress. The question this article pursues is therefore not the question the mind–body literature ordinarily asks. It is not, how do mind and body interact. It is, what conceptual operation made their interaction look, in the first place, like something requiring a special name.
II. Descartes Did Not Do All This
A large portion of twentieth- and twenty-first-century theory explains the modern predicament by pointing at a single seventeenth-century philosopher. Body becomes, in this telling, extended mechanism; mind becomes thinking substance; modern medicine inherits the mechanistic body and fragments the organism into treatable parts; Western individualism encloses a private, interior self; biomedicine learns to ignore what a patient's illness means to them; and the whole apparatus is traced, with a confidence the historical record does not actually support, to René Descartes's Meditations on First Philosophy (1641). Gilbert Ryle gave the resulting caricature its most quotable form when he mocked the Cartesian mind as "the ghost in the machine" (Ryle 1949, p.15), and the phrase has done more to fix the villain in place than any careful reading of Descartes himself has done to complicate him.
The Descartes-as-origin story has genuine rhetorical appeal, because it converts a vast, heterogeneous intellectual and institutional transformation into a single author's mistake, correctable, in principle, by a single argument. That appeal should be resisted, not because Descartes is unimportant, but because the explanation he is asked to bear is far too large for one philosopher's metaphysics to carry. Substance dualism is a genuine and historically consequential position. It cannot, on its own, explain why biology came to be opposed to culture, why nature came to be opposed to history, why the individual came to be opposed to society, why causal explanation came to be opposed to interpretive understanding, or why an entire university system came to be organized, by the late nineteenth century, around a hard division between the natural sciences and the human sciences (Ecks 2026b). These are not deductions from the Meditations. They were built up, across two and a half centuries, through developments in anatomy, physiology, natural history, political economy, psychology, sociology, and anthropology, and consolidated, finally, in the specific institutional form of separate chairs, separate laboratories and clinics, separate journals, and separate professional societies (Ecks 2026a).
The professionalization of the mind side of the partition is, if anything, later and more jurisdictional than the professionalization of the body side, and dating it precisely sharpens the point without requiring the stronger and less defensible claim that no philosophical antecedent existed before it. Physiology became a distinct experimental discipline, with its own laboratories and its own methodological canon, chiefly across the middle decades of the nineteenth century, formalized in texts such as Claude Bernard's Introduction à l'étude de la médecine expérimentale (1865). Neurology and psychiatry, meanwhile, separated from each other and from general medicine only gradually, and substantially in the second half of the century, through the founding of dedicated societies, hospital wards, journals, and nosologies, a process still visibly underway in Emil Kraepelin's classificatory project of the 1880s and 1890s. A seventeenth-century philosopher could distinguish mind from body, and did; distinguishing them is not what this article calls a SWIPE. What seventeenth-century philosophy could not yet do was attach that distinction to the institutional apparatus described above, the machinery that converts a philosophical position into a durable division of epistemic labor. The claim this article defends is accordingly the weaker and more historically defensible one: not that the mind/body SWIPE was absent before the nineteenth century, but that its distinctively modern, institutionally distributed form, like the consolidation of nature/culture more generally, crystallized during it (Ecks 2026b).
Descartes becomes, on this reading, not the sole author of a mistake but the name retrospectively given to a much larger classificatory settlement that no single philosopher created and that had, in significant part, not yet been institutionally built in his own lifetime. Beyond the Body Proper supplies an unusually clear specimen of the caricature this article is resisting: its editors trace the modern "body proper" to the late sixteenth century, name Descartes as chief among its architects, and describe his dualism as having rendered the body "fully machinelike," before concluding that "perhaps no writing in modern Western languages can entirely escape the persistent dualism of body and mind" (Lock and Farquhar 2007, pp.19, 111, quoted in Ecks 2009). The verdict is too generous to Descartes and too harsh at once, generous because it credits one philosopher's metaphysics with an institutional achievement that took two and a half further centuries and an entire apparatus of professions to complete, harsh because it treats "inescapable" dualism as self-evidently a diagnosis rather than asking what work the distinction, in some more modest form, might still be doing. Descartes himself was, on his own reviewer's account, no political revolutionary, preferring inner calm to outer change, and yet his philosophical insistence on a thinking self irreducible to bodily attributes turns out to have been important for the later emergence of modern politics of freedom and equality (Ecks 2009), a debt Section III returns to by way of sex and gender.
The subsequent history of psychosomatic medicine, a field that exists precisely because the allocation keeps failing to hold, is the natural place to look for confirmation, and Section VI returns to it in detail. For now the point is narrower: blaming Descartes lets the actual mechanism of the partition, institutional jurisdiction rather than philosophical argument, escape scrutiny.
III. One SWIPE, Many Apparent Dualisms
One reason the mind/body problem has proved so resistant to dissolution is that it does not stay in one costume. It reappears, structurally intact, under a series of different disciplinary names, and noticing the recurrence is one of the more useful things a comparative approach to SWIPEs can do (Ecks 2026a).
In philosophy of mind it appears as body and mind directly, the familiar formulation from which the problem takes its name. In medical anthropology it appears as biology and culture, where bodies are treated as biologically universal while experience, meaning, and illness behavior are treated as culturally variable (Ecks 2026c). In sociology it appears as individual and society, where the bounded organism or person occupies one side and collective structure the other, generating the extraordinary and still unresolved volume of structure-and-agency theorizing that anthropology and sociology have produced across the twentieth century (Ecks 2026a). In the anthropology of material culture it appears as material and symbolic, where objects and bodily processes occupy one side and meaning and representation the other. In epistemology and the history of science it appears as objective and subjective, where what can be measured looks fundamentally different in kind from what can only be experienced, a distinction whose own nineteenth-century institutionalization has been documented in detail elsewhere (Daston and Galison 2007). In political and medical anthropology it appears as structure and experience, where political economy is imagined to exist "outside" the person while suffering exists "inside," so that theory then has to explain how the outside gets in. And in feminist theory it appears, in its best-known form, as sex and gender, where sex becomes a biological substrate and gender becomes its variable social interpretation. This settlement has several partial and overlapping histories rather than one, running through sexology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and sociology as well as clinical psychology, and it was given one of its most portable mid-century formulations before being taken up as a tool for contesting biological determinism in feminist theory, and then destabilized from within by the observation that the biological substrate is itself produced through classificatory and clinical practice (Money, Hampson, and Hampson 1955; Butler 1990; Fausto-Sterling 2000).
It is tempting, at this point, to conclude that all seven of these are merely the same distinction wearing different vocabulary, but the temptation should be resisted for the same reason the temptation to posit one master SWIPE from which every other SWIPE descends should be resisted in general (Ecks 2026a). Nature/culture, the superordinate case in this family, frequently functions less as a synonym for mind/body than as an allocative matrix that permits the other distinctions to become mutually aligned: body can be allocated to nature, mind to culture, biology to nature, society to culture, cause to nature, meaning to culture, and once these allocations have been made, mind/body, biology/culture, individual/society, and objective/subjective all begin, without anyone deciding it should be so, to reinforce one another. This is precisely why abolishing any single one of them tends to accomplish so little. A philosopher can retire substance dualism with a well-constructed argument while biology/culture, individual/society, objective/subjective, and structure/experience remain fully intact and fully operative in the surrounding disciplines; the classificatory machinery simply relocates. Modern theory has, as a result, repeatedly announced the death of Cartesian dualism while continuing, with real intellectual energy, to manufacture its cousins. The historical proposition this article defends is accordingly neither that mind/body is the single origin from which every other SWIPE descends, nor that it is merely one SWIPE among a set of otherwise unrelated others. It is one especially consequential member of a family whose members became mutually reinforcing once the modern division of epistemic labor made a shared architecture, an objective, causal, natural-scientific pole and a subjective, interpretive, human-scientific pole, available for redeployment across a series of independent disciplinary settlements. No direct line of descent needs to be traced from Descartes through biology and culture to individual and society and on to sex and gender; what needs to be shown, case by case, is only that a recurrent classificatory architecture kept getting redeployed once it was institutionally available, which is a considerably more modest and more defensible historical claim.
Sex and gender belong in this family not because sexologists were reading Descartes, but because the same underlying architecture, a biological substrate paired with objectivity and causal explanation, a socially and historically variable overlay paired with subjectivity and interpretation, was available for reuse once it had consolidated elsewhere, and mid-century clinical practice reused it for a purpose that was genuinely protective (Ecks 2026a). This is where the article's opening argument about 2009 returns in its sharpest form. Feminist theory's sex/gender distinction did indispensable work for exactly the reason the earlier essay identified in Descartes's own dualism: it let a person's political and intellectual standing be argued for independently of their reproductive anatomy, without denying that the anatomy existed (Ecks 2009). That the distinction has since generated its own well-documented difficulties does not retract the achievement; it only shows that sex/gender, like mind/body before it, needed to remain a working differentiation rather than harden into a SWIPE, a double structure, real protective achievement, real risk of subsequent ontologization, that also holds for structure and experience in the political anthropology of suffering, and for biology and culture in medical anthropology. Each of these disciplinary formulations deserves its own careful history; what this article offers instead is the observation that they share a family resemblance precise enough to be diagnostically useful.
IV. The Repair Industry
If the preceding sections are right, a great deal of subsequent theory can be redescribed as a sustained, resourceful effort to repair the mind/body partition's consequences. The sequence recurs with striking regularity: a SWIPE is consolidated; empirical work then discovers, reliably, that living processes violate the partition; a new concept is invented to reconnect the two now-troublesome terms; the reconnecting concept is received, often correctly, as a genuine advance; and the classificatory operation that made the reconnection necessary is left standing, available to generate the next round of trouble (Ecks 2026c).
Not every repair does the same amount of work, and treating them as interchangeable would flatten distinctions this article needs. Three kinds can be distinguished, and they differ not by sophistication but by where each one still keeps its coordinate system. First-order repairs visibly retain two separated domains, either by building a named connector between them or by substantially revising what the two terms themselves mean, while continuing to treat body and mind, or one of the family's cousins, as the terms whose relation is being repaired. Second-order repairs deny that the two poles were ever separate to begin with, and are, for exactly that reason, the more interesting failures: the denial is staged as a discovery, but the drama of the denial depends entirely on the prior existence of the split it denies. What results is a SWIPE-dependent nondualism, an anti-dualism that is architecturally dependent on the very SWIPE it denies. A theory that spends its energy insisting that A and B were never really apart has made A and B, rather than living, its organizing question, which is a SWIPE's own vocabulary doing the organizing even in the act of refusing it. Pre-SWIPE redescriptions are rarer and harder to produce than either of the first two, because they do not begin with A and B at all: the two terms are not there to be joined, denied, or dissolved, since the analysis never generated them as its starting coordinates in the first place.
First-order repairs. Arthur Kleinman's explanatory-model framework, and the broader tradition of psychosomatic and sociosomatic reasoning it belongs to, proposes vocabularies expressly designed to link a patient's bodily suffering to its social and biographical meaning (Kleinman 1980; Kleinman 1986). George Engel's biopsychosocial model belongs in the same tier, adding "psycho" and "social" as further boxes rather than dissolving the boxes into a single process (Engel 1977). Paul Farmer's demonstration that poverty, racism, and political arrangements shape the distribution of tuberculosis, HIV, and maternal mortality is an empirical achievement that survives every reservation this article raises about its framing (Farmer 2004). What deserves scrutiny is not the finding but the architecture it is asked to repair: a prior separation between structure and embodied life. Political economy does not cross an ontological boundary to become bodily consequential; its effects are realized through concrete mediational pathways, wages, food, housing, labor, pollutants, relations, anticipations, involving materiality, dwelling, embodiment, and symbolism at once (Ecks 2026c). Kleinman's bridge, Engel's third term, and Farmer's directional metaphor share a family resemblance: a bridge is evidence of a prior river, and if the river was itself conceptually manufactured, an elegant bridge across it does not resolve the deeper problem, it simply gets very good at crossing a divide that need not have been there.
Marcel Mauss's 1934 lecture on techniques of the body belongs in the same tier, despite doing more work than a bridge concept usually does: his "triple viewpoint," biological, psychological, and sociological, held together simultaneously, was an attempt to stop treating any one of the three as self-sufficient (Mauss 1934/1973). The three-part list is nonetheless still visible underneath the attempt, which is what keeps it first-order rather than second. Margaret Lock's long-running comparative research on menopause belongs here too: her finding that biological process, reported symptom, medical category, diet, and life history cannot be cleanly separated in Kyoto and Massachusetts (Lock 1993), extended with Patricia Kaufert into an explicit account of the coproduction of biology and culture (Lock and Kaufert 2001), changes what "biology" and "culture" are taken to mean without ceasing to organize the analysis around biology and culture as its terms. Nancy Scheper-Hughes and Margaret Lock's mindful body belongs in this tier as well, and deserves a generous reading. Their 1987 formulation presents the individual, social, and political bodies as three perspectives from which the body may be viewed, not as three separately existing substances (Scheper-Hughes and Lock 1987), which means the mindful body is not itself another SWIPE by this article's own five-part test: differentiation into three perspectives is not automatically ontologization into three domains. Its real limitation lies elsewhere: the repair still takes the body as the single surface onto which phenomenological, social, and political processes must all be gathered, which is precisely the dynamic Section V examines in detail.
Second-order repairs. Donna Haraway's cyborg is where the repair literature crosses into a different register, and the difference repays close attention. The cyborg does not propose a bridge between the human and the machine, or a coproduction account of how that boundary shifts. It denies the boundary was ever intact: "a cyborg is a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism," already and always, never first pure and then contaminated (Haraway 1991). Read quickly, this looks like an escape from the SWIPE rather than a repair of it. It is instead the second-order case this taxonomy needs. The cyborg's entire rhetorical charge depends on the reader still holding human and machine, organism and mechanism, apart as the pair whose supposed purity is being violated; remove the prior expectation that a body and a machine are different kinds of thing, and the cyborg has nothing left to be transgressive about. What the figure actually does is take an ordinary fact, that organisms have always coordinated with tools, prostheses, and instruments as part of what coordination is, and restage it as ontological drama, a boundary violation, a monstrous and liberatory hybrid, because the SWIPE's prior partition is still doing the work of making the fact look dramatic in the first place. The cyborg's anti-dualism is not independent of the dualism it denies; it is architecturally dependent on it, and needs the partition to remain legible as a transgression rather than as the unremarkable multimaterial forming that Section VII treats as continuous with living activity as such.
Haraway's later portmanteau, natureculture, makes the same structure even easier to see, because it collapses its two terms typographically while leaving them fully intact conceptually (Haraway 2003). The word performs togetherness without argument: nature and culture are still legible inside it, and the joining registers as a joining only because a reader already knows which syllables used to be two words. A term that announces, by its own construction, that it is uniting two things previously kept apart has not stopped treating those two things as its coordinate system; it has made the uniting the point. Second-order repairs of this kind are, in one respect, more ambitious than first-order repairs, since they attempt to dissolve the partition rather than merely cross it. But dissolution staged as drama, rather than pursued as redescription, keeps the dissolved terms in view long enough for the next generation of theory to find them still there and start building bridges again.
Bruno Latour occupies a different position again, and deserves to be treated on his own rather than folded into either tier. Latour's account of modernity as the simultaneous work of purification, which manufactures two ontologically distinct zones, and translation, which manufactures hybrids between them, comes closer than either Kleinman's bridges or Haraway's cyborg to diagnosing the operation this article calls SWIPE: purification is, in most respects, a description of what ontologizing and epistemologizing do (Latour 1993). Where Latour's account falls short is in what it takes as evidence against the partition. He treats the sheer proliferation of hybrids, quasi-objects neither fully natural nor fully social, as itself a refutation of the modern settlement, on the assumption that hybrids should not exist if purification had actually succeeded. But a SWIPE was never a claim that hybrids cannot occur; it is a claim about jurisdiction, about which discipline gets to adjudicate a phenomenon and by which epistemological standard. Hybrids can proliferate indefinitely while the paired epistemologies that assign them, provisionally, to one expert jurisdiction or another remain fully intact. Latour comes close enough to the diagnosis to count as a precursor, and stops short of it by mistaking a symptom, hybrid abundance, for the cure.
Annemarie Mol's work deserves separate and more sympathetic treatment, as the strongest candidate this literature offers for something other than a repair. Mol's demonstration that a disease like atherosclerosis is not one object viewed from several angles but several practices that only sometimes cohere into something singular enough to be called a disease does not deny a prior separateness the way the cyborg does, and does not treat hybrid proliferation as self-evidently disruptive the way Latour does (Mol 2002). It declines, from the outset, to grant the disease category the status of a pre-given object that different perspectives could subsequently be joined onto or split off from. Practice, in Mol's account, does not connect two things; it is where the object comes from at all. That is close to what this article means by beginning before the cut, and it is treated in that spirit below, as a serious candidate for what a pre-SWIPE redescription looks like when applied to disease, without claiming that Mol's own vocabulary was built for the wider case this article makes.
Pre-SWIPE redescriptions. The genuinely difficult test, and the one this article holds itself to rather than merely posing to others, is whether an account can be given of body, mind, matter, and meaning that never generates the pair in the first place, not even provisionally, not even as a scaffold later kicked away. Deleuze and Guattari's account of assemblages is one candidate: it declines to presuppose fixed biological or sociological units, describing modes of composition rather than pre-given individuals confronting a pre-given whole (Deleuze and Guattari 1987), though whether the assemblage vocabulary fully avoids smuggling back a version of the parts it composes is a question this article does not resolve. Mol's practice-based ontology, on the reading just given, is a second candidate, tentatively and specifically for the disease case rather than as a general method. Living Value Theory, developed across the remainder of this article, is offered as a third. What unites the candidates is that none of them treats getting the relation between two prior things right as the task. The task was never to relate mind and body correctly. It was to notice that living, not mind and body, was always the thing needing description, and that mind and body are classificatory products of a description that went looking for them.
Every strategy surveyed here contains a genuine empirical or theoretical advance, and this article does not propose to retire any of them. What the survey as a whole suggests is a more general pattern, weakest in the pre-SWIPE candidates and strongest in the first-order repairs, but never entirely absent even in Haraway or Latour: most compound repair concepts, mediator, bridge, embodiment, hybrid, coproduction, entanglement, preserve, in their own grammar, some memory of the cut they were built to cross.
V. The Body Becomes the Universal Repair Surface
One consequence of the repair sequence traced in Section IV deserves its own extended treatment, because it is, on inspection, the most theoretically interesting outcome of the entire process. Across a century of repair work, an enormous share of the labor has landed on a single term: the body. The starting object was genuinely narrow. Lock and Farquhar's own diagnostic term for it, the "body proper," names the individualized organism that science and regimes of power turned into an object of inquiry, a "skin-bounded, rights-bearing, communicating, experience-collecting, biomechanical entity" (Lock and Farquhar 2007, p.2, quoted in Ecks 2009). From that impoverished starting point, the body has been progressively supplemented by the lived body, the social body, the political body, the historical body, the gendered body, the racialized body, the disciplined body, the suffering body, the technological body, the cyborg body, the relational body, and the locally biological body (Csordas 1990; Scheper-Hughes and Lock 1987; Turner 1984; Haraway 1991; Lock and Kaufert 2001). Read as a sequence, this looks like sustained theoretical enrichment, an ever more textured object replacing an impoverished one. Read against the argument of this article, it invites a second and less flattering interpretation.
Nearly everything that an earlier settlement excluded from the body is, over the course of this sequence, progressively put back into it, and the recurrent directional vocabulary in which this happens exposes what is at stake. Culture "becomes embodied." Power "gets under the skin." Technology "is incorporated." History "is inscribed on the body." A patient or an ethnographic subject "is reinserted" into their social and political context. Embodiment itself need not, as a bare word, imply spatial entry; it can equally mean realization, instantiation, or concrete manifestation, and nothing here turns on an etymological argument about the verb alone. What the recurrent phrasing does reveal, taken together rather than one term at a time, is a residual inside/outside geometry that the underlying argument of this section, and of the article as a whole, is meant to unsettle: something is imagined as having been elsewhere before it "gets," "becomes," or is "reinserted" into the body, and the body, in each case, becomes responsible for carrying nearly the entire world that an earlier, narrower biomedical body had been stripped of, one repair concept at a time, until "embodiment" is asked to do the conceptual work of reconciling nature and culture, individual and society, material and symbolic, subject and object, structure and experience, essentially all at once (Csordas 1990).
This should not be read as a claim that embodiment theory is useless; the ethnography it has produced, on pain, ritual, bodily comportment, and illness experience, remains genuinely valuable, and this article has no interest in discarding it (Ecks 2026c). The claim is narrower: embodiment has been made to solve problems generated by an earlier underdescription of what living involves, which is exactly why the category keeps expanding without an obvious internal limit, each addition arriving as though it were the discovery of a genuinely new dimension of bodily life rather than the redelivery of a piece the original partition had already removed. "Context," the noun that most often accompanies "reinsertion," is a reliable symptom of the same pattern: it retains a geometry of contained object and surrounding frame that the ethnography using it usually goes on to complicate or reject in its own findings (Farmer 2004; Ecks 2026c).
Embodiment became modern social and medical theory's universal repair surface, the one term flexible enough to be loaded, again and again, with whatever the prevailing classification had most recently excluded. The body acquired what look, from within the repair literature, like nearly miraculous theoretical powers, the capacity to carry history, structure, meaning, and power all at once, precisely because modern classificatory practice had first deprived living of almost everything except body, leaving embodiment as the only door left standing through which the rest of the world could be smuggled back in.
The pattern generalizes beyond the body, and stating the general form sharpens the rest of this article's argument. Post-dualist theory repeatedly mistakes the empirical failure of a bad classification for the discovery of a surprising ontology. When embodiment turns out to carry history, power, and meaning all at once, the finding is treated as evidence that bodies are astonishing, richly relational, other than the mechanist tradition supposed; it is at least as well explained by the less flattering possibility that the classification which had isolated "body" from history, power, and meaning in the first place was simply wrong, and that putting the pieces back where they belonged was mistaken, in the excitement of doing it, for a metaphysical discovery about bodies as such. The more completely a theory takes the SWIPE for granted as the error from which it must escape, the more spectacular the ordinary world looks when the SWIPE fails. Hybrids look monstrous only to an observer who expected purity. Entanglement looks surprising only to an observer who expected separation. None of this makes the underlying empirical findings, that culture is embodied, that structure gets under the skin, that matter and meaning are not independent, any less real. It means only that the sense of theoretical astonishment attached to them belongs to the classification being violated, not to the world being described.
VI. Why Medicine Makes the Failure Impossible to Ignore
Every domain of living activity is, on the account this article is building toward, multimediated; nothing about health makes it uniquely so. What health does supply, with unusual force and unusual frequency, is a setting in which the practical costs of the mind/body partition become too expensive to ignore, because processes conventionally sorted as biological, psychological, social, and material continually and visibly affect one another in exactly the cases medicine is asked to treat.
The disease/illness distinction, medical anthropology's own founding settlement, is a derivative instance of the mind/body SWIPE rather than an independent invention. Disease was assigned to pathology, biology, objectivity, and causal explanation; illness was assigned to experience, meaning, culture, and interpretation, and the distinction mapped unusually well onto an existing division of epistemic labor, with biomedicine claiming pathology and medical anthropology and interpretive social science claiming meaning and experience (Kleinman, Eisenberg, and Good 1978; Kleinman 1980). The problem, as in every other case this article has examined, is not that the distinction never tracks anything real. It begins the moment the distinction hardens into separate ontological territories requiring, as their name implies, separate epistemologies.
Psychosomatic medicine names the SWIPE in its own title, psyche joined to soma by a hyphen that is doing the same bridging work Section IV described in general terms. The field consolidated as a named specialty around 1940, its flagship journal beginning publication in 1939 and the American Psychosomatic Society following in 1942, precisely because clinicians kept encountering conditions, chronic pain, gastrointestinal disorder, so-called neurasthenic exhaustion, that the disease/illness settlement could not cleanly sort into one column or the other. Arthur Kleinman's later ethnography of neurasthenia and depression in Chinese clinical settings extends exactly this observation: physiological sensation, working conditions, diagnostic category, and moral meaning arrive, in his patients' accounts, already interwoven, and no amount of careful case-taking succeeds in separating a biological substrate from its social overlay (Kleinman 1986). Yet even here, the vocabulary of "somatization," a psychological state expressing itself "as" bodily symptoms, risks becoming one more bridge term, preserving in its grammar the two shores it was coined to connect.
Structural violence and local biology, treated at length elsewhere in this series, belong here as well, because both are, on inspection, applications of the mind/body SWIPE's disciplinary cousin, biology and culture, to specifically medical material (Ecks 2026c).
None of this is a case against clinical vocabulary as such, still less an argument that psychosomatic medicine, explanatory-model theory, or trauma-informed care should be abandoned. It is an argument that medicine keeps discovering, at real human cost, exactly what this article's opening sections predicted it would discover: that a partition built to organize professional jurisdiction does not describe how a living person actually falls ill, suffers, and recovers, and that every clinical vocabulary invented to cross the partition testifies, in its own construction, to the partition's continuing hold.
VII. What Would It Mean to Begin Before the Cut?
The alternative proposed here is neither monism, the flat assertion that mind and body are really one thing, nor the vaguer gesture that "everything is connected," nor a principled refusal to distinguish anything from anything else. Each of those alternatives would simply trade one blunt instrument for another. The alternative is to begin somewhere other than mind and body at all.
Living Value Theory's starting proposition is that life is recursive mediation within a mesocosm, the lived field in which reality becomes available to a living being at all (Ecks 2026d). The primary unit of analysis, on this account, is not body, mind, culture, society, or environment considered as pre-given regions; it is living activity itself, a living being continuously remediating the relation between itself and the conditions under which its continued living remains possible. Five mediations operate within this activity, analytically distinguishable and normally co-present, though their relative salience, and even their availability, varies across organisms and situations. Embodiment names coordination through and as bodily experience: rhythm, fatigue, sensation, skill, appetite, vulnerability, pain, and pleasure. Being-with names the relational constitution of that coordination, attunement, recognition, care, conflict, extended beyond human-human relations to human-animal and human-more-than-human relations that most inherited theory has placed outside its jurisdiction. Multiversal dwelling names the spatial, ecological, built, territorial, and world-organizing conditions under which coordination unfolds, a house, a hospital ward, a border regime, a forest, a climate, a migration route can all matter to dwelling, not only non-human regularities of terrain and season. Multimaterial forming names engagement with tools, substances, and infrastructure; it is not a specifically human achievement, since nonhuman organisms form and engage materials too, but human technological elaboration is exceptional in degree and cumulative symbolic organization. And multisymbolism names the symbolic and representational systems through which coordination can be articulated and legitimized, richly available to human coordination and unevenly, if at all, available elsewhere, rather than a condition every living being must meet (Ecks 2026d). The mediations are accordingly not autonomous domains awaiting connection. Concrete living episodes are normally multimediated, and a ritual, an illness, or a headache loses descriptive richness when one mediation is ignored, without this implying that all five must always be equally salient, or salient at all, for coordination to continue.
Layered across this mediational field are five levels of recursivity, and this layering is what allows the mind/body problem to be redescribed rather than merely renamed. L1 names absorbed, ongoing coordination, the vast majority of living activity, in which bodies, relations, materials, environments, and symbols align without effort or explicit attention. L2 is the zone of felt fold or misalignment: irritation, discomfort, friction, a disturbance with no hard temporal boundary separating it from L1, sometimes remaining unarticulated indefinitely. L3 is articulation and askability, the point at which a disturbance becomes nameable and can be asked about. L4 is institutionally stabilized reflexivity: classification, diagnosis, and response, compressed into durable categories capable of organizing rapid orientation and coordinated action. L5 is meta-repositioning, the level at which frameworks, including the mind/body distinction itself, turn back on the classifications and categories operating at L4 and ask what they are doing (Ecks 2026d). The levels are historically dependent upward, L4 categories do not arise except from prior L1 and L2 activity that they compress and organize, but the dependency is not one-directional in its ongoing operation. Once established, L4 and L5 formations recursively reorganize subsequent L1 and L2 activity: a diagnosis can alter what a sensation feels like; an institution can restructure habitual coping; a theory can change what a person notices at all. That feedback loop is not a complication of recursivity. It is the point of calling it recursive rather than merely layered. "Disease," "illness," "mind," and "body" are not automatically L4 categories in every use; a patient's own naming of a pain is often ordinary L3 articulation, and the same words become L4 only once they are institutionally stabilized and operationalized, in a diagnostic manual, a licensing exam, a funding category, rather than by definition.
Recast in these terms, "mind" is not a mysterious substance but a loose bundle of processes inherited vocabulary happened to group together: felt disturbance, attention, memory, anticipation, symbolic articulation, selfrecursive monitoring, imagination, and institutionally acquired classification. "Body" is an equally loose bundle: metabolism, sensation, movement, organ function, posture, hormonal activity, habit, and material vulnerability. The old distinction cuts across genuinely heterogeneous processes on both sides of its own line, which is one reason no principled criterion for sorting a given phenomenon into one bundle or the other has ever proved stable across disciplines or clinical traditions. Because L1 and L2 shade into each other, a great deal of what looks, from within the mind/body frame, like an interaction between two domains can be redescribed as movement within a single recursively organized process: a pain may operate for some time as unarticulated L2 disturbance before a diagnosis, an L4 act, transforms how it is subsequently sensed, and a habitual treatment routine can, once established, sediment back down toward L1. Recent LVT work on mental health argues, in exactly this spirit, that subjective experience is best understood not as a report to be captured but as felt misalignment that only later becomes available for symbolic classification (Ecks 2026f).
Take an ordinary headache as a worked example, since the mind/body literature has always treated pain as a privileged test case. The traditional framing asks whether the headache is physical or psychological, whether stress is causing bodily pain or bodily pain is producing mental distress, and the framing forces an either/or answer onto a process that was never structured as an either/or in the first place. The reframing this section proposes asks a different set of questions entirely: what is disturbing ongoing coordination; how is the disturbance sensed, at what threshold does it become salient enough to interrupt L1 absorption; when and how, if ever, is it articulated; what relations, at work, at home, in a clinical encounter, are sustaining or worsening it; what materials, medications, screens, posture, mediate it; what dwelling conditions, light, noise, season, are implicated; what diagnostic classification, if any, gets imposed on it, and how does that classification feed back into how the disturbance is subsequently sensed and acted upon. No ontological crossing occurs anywhere in this sequence, because none was ever required. What occurs instead is a single, richly describable process undergoing changing recursive organization across time, sometimes moving among levels and sometimes remaining largely unarticulated, and the metaphysical mystery that the mind/body framing manufactures simply has nowhere left to attach itself.
VIII. From "Overcoming Dualism" to Diagnosing Bad Cuts
A final methodological consequence follows from everything argued so far, and it counts against a habit as common in the repair literature as in this article's own field of comparison. "Nondualism" should not be adopted as a value in itself. Not every distinction is a problem waiting to be dissolved; not every continuum represents an advance over the distinction it replaces; not every declaration of multiplicity is, on inspection, illuminating rather than merely permissive. The question that actually does diagnostic work is not whether a pair of terms is dualist. It is whether the pair has become a SWIPE.
A workable test can be extracted from the argument of this article and applied prospectively, to any conceptual pair a reader encounters, including pairs this article has not itself discussed. Does the distinction mark a locally useful difference, or does it claim to exhaust an entire domain of phenomena between two poles? Are the two terms treated as independently intelligible, each nameable without reference to the other? Are different epistemologies, different methods, different evidentiary standards, assigned to each term as a matter of professional jurisdiction rather than practical convenience? Does the relationship between the terms subsequently require its own dedicated theory, its own conference circuit, its own journal special issue? Do empirical anomalies generate an accumulating series of bridge concepts, each received as a breakthrough, each eventually superseded by the next? And does the vocabulary of "both," "interaction," "hybridity," "coproduction," or "entanglement" recur suspiciously often in the surrounding literature? A pair that answers yes to several of these questions is a strong candidate for a SWIPE regardless of whether it happens to involve mind and body, nature and culture, or any of the other cases this series has examined (Ecks 2026a).
Applying the test retrospectively changes the shape of twentieth-century theory considerably. Phenomenology, practice theory, feminist body theory, medical anthropology, science and technology studies, and new materialism are not simply a sequence of successive breakthroughs beyond a single Cartesian error, each one seeing further than the last. They are better read as a mixture, in the proportions Section IV's taxonomy was built to register, of genuine empirical discovery, first-order repair, second-order repair, and, in rare cases, an attempt at pre-SWIPE redescription, differing case by case rather than fixed in advance by which school a theorist belongs to.
LVT's claim on this literature is not that relations precede relata, a claim Mol, Latour, and Deleuze and Guattari have each made in their own way already. It is a different and more specific claim: that living precedes the classificatory allocation of its mediations into purportedly autonomous ontological and epistemological domains. LVT does not ask how mind and body, once given, come to be related. It asks why body, mind, matter, and meaning were selected as primordial terms in the first place, out of the much larger set of things living activity actually involves. And then it decomposes them, not into a further pair, and not into a flat multiplicity for its own sake, but into the five mediations and five recursivity levels Section VII sets out, a description that generates "mind" and "body" only downstream, as convenient but partial bundlings of a small number of the processes recursive mediation actually names.
Conclusion: The Mind–Body Problem After SWIPE
Return, in closing, to the question this article opened with. How does mind affect matter. How does meaning alter physiology. How does society enter a body. How does experience become biological. How do symbols have material effects. How does culture shape nature. This article's answer is not that the processes these questions gesture toward are unreal; food, grief, injury, diagnosis, and belief can and routinely do become mutually consequential within the same living process. The answer is that formulating these processes as crossings between separately constituted ontological domains is, in case after case, an artifact of a classificatory operation rather than a discovery about how living things are actually put together.
The deeper error the mind/body SWIPE committed was to convert differences within living into differences between worlds. Once that conversion had been institutionalized, in universities, in journals, in licensing boards, in diagnostic manuals, the subsequent history divides into three generations, and each of the three, including the one that thought it had finally escaped the other two, kept the same two shores in view. The first generation accepted the split and asked how to get from one side to the other: interactionism, psychosomatics, the disease/illness distinction, each proposing a crossing. The second generation, dissatisfied with crossings, built bridges substantial enough to look like revisions of the terms themselves: embodiment, coproduction, biosociality, local biology, each changing what "biology" and "culture" were taken to mean while still organizing the change around biology and culture. The third generation declared the bridges unnecessary: entanglement, hybridity, assemblage, the cyborg, each insisting the two sides were never separate to begin with. What the third generation did not notice, and what this article's second-order tier was built to name, is that declaring two shores were never apart still requires the two shores to say it about. A theory whose entire argument is that A and B were always already entangled has made A and B the thing its argument is organized around, exactly as much as a theory that builds a bridge between them. LVT's departure from all three generations is not a fourth, better crossing, and not a more emphatic denial that any crossing was needed. It is to stop starting with the shores.
The mind–body problem is not, on the account developed here, a timeless puzzle about the fundamental nature of persons that modern thought inherited from antiquity and has been patiently working to solve ever since. It is a monument, unusually well preserved and unusually well defended, to what a specific historical settlement did to the description of living, dividing a single process into two domains competent enough, and prestigious enough, and institutionally entrenched enough, that reconnecting them came to look like one of the deepest problems in the history of Western thought.
The task, accordingly, is not to build a better bridge between mind and body. It is not even to demonstrate, with ever more sophisticated theoretical resources, that mind and body are entangled. It is to understand how living was divided into mind and body so thoroughly, and so successfully, that putting the two back together came to seem like philosophy's hardest problem, rather than what it actually is: the return, after a long detour, of what should never have been asked to leave.
