Every article was reviewed in full during preparation. The guide is not a sequence of abstracts. Instead, it explains the shared architecture that makes the individual essays intelligible, identifies recurring questions, and proposes routes through the material for readers arriving from different backgrounds. Living Value Theory begins from a simple observation: most of what makes a life go well is not first experienced as an opinion, a preference, a price, or a proposition. It is experienced as coordination that is working, or as a disturbance when it is not. A room is warm enough; a child is settled; a familiar route remains passable; an object holds; an encounter does not demand defensive calculation; a practice provides orientation. Such achievements are easily overlooked precisely because, when they work, they become background. LVT calls the lived field in which these achievements occur the mesocosm: the specific, textured, historically accumulated world within which living coordination takes place.
The corpus then asks two linked questions: how is livable coordination achieved and sustained, and what happens when institutions, theories, categories, metrics, technologies, or works of art cease to fit the coordination they are meant to support? The answer is not simply that they become “false.” They may become efficient, internally consistent, legally valid, statistically impressive, or aesthetically sophisticated while still failing to fit the realities they are supposed to coordinate. This is why LVT ranges from mental health and public health to Homer, Gothic cathedrals, accounting, religion, artificial intelligence, workplace bullying, and mathematics. These are not disconnected case studies. They are different sites at which living coordination is stabilised, distorted, made legible, or renewed.
The Corpus at a Glance
1. Begin with the Reversal: Value Is Not a Thing
For a newcomer, the most important adjustment is to stop expecting LVT to offer a new object called “value.” LVT does not say that value is a property hidden in commodities, preferences, beliefs, social norms, or biological states. LVT says that value is what sustains, repairs, intensifies, or improves living coordination, and that value often becomes most perceptible when coordination is threatened or breaks down. This makes value neither purely subjective nor objectively measurable in the usual sense. It is the success of a life in moving through the world across several simultaneous conditions.
This reversal has two consequences. First, symbols are not the original home of value. Words, diagnoses, prices, narratives, models, legal categories, and scores participate in living coordination, but explicit symbolic articulation often arises from or alongside coordination already proceeding across embodiment, being-with, dwelling, multimateriality, and multisymbolization. Second, no single symbolic representation can capture that field without leaving something out. The question is therefore not whether a representation is wholly true or false, but what it fits, what it does not fit, and what it changes once it enters the world.
LVT is not anti-language, anti-science, anti-metric, or anti-institution. It is suspicious of overreach. A category is useful when it performs a limited coordination well. A diagnostic code can support treatment, an accounting ledger can stabilise a transaction, and a legal definition can organise action. Trouble begins when an institution treats the category as the entire reality rather than as a selective rendering of it. LVT’s criticism is therefore more exact than a general denunciation of abstraction: it asks which dimensions have been retained, which have been compressed, and who must live with the remainder.
2. The Five Mediations: The Basic Map of a Livable World
The central LVT architecture is the claim that human life is always mediated through five irreducible dimensions. They are not separate layers that appear in sequence, and they are not “factors” to be added to a social-scientific model. They are co-present conditions of coordination. Any explanation that silently deletes one of them risks making the world more manageable on paper while making it less intelligible in practice.
The usefulness of the five mediations is diagnostic. Consider a public-health intervention that has impeccable statistical evidence. LVT asks more than whether the evidence is sound. Does the intervention alter embodied rhythms? Does it increase or reduce dependable being-with? Does it require a kind of dwelling unavailable to those it addresses? What devices, buildings, records, and supply chains does it presuppose? What symbolic burden does it impose on patients? The same questions apply to a school reform, a welfare benefit, an urban plan, a religious ritual, or a work of art.
This is why LVT routinely resists explanations that begin with an isolated individual. A person is not a sealed container of attitudes, utility, “self-efficacy,” or cognitive bias. Nor is a person merely an effect of a macro-system. Human life is always already distributed across bodies, relations, places, materials, and symbols. The mesocosm is the name for that distributed but concrete middle scale.
3. Recursivity: Why Living Worlds Cannot Be Treated as Static Objects
The second core distinction concerns recursivity. In everyday language, a recursive process is one that loops back on itself. In LVT, recursivity concerns whether and how the relevant aspect of a counterpart changes how it proceeds in response to coordination. A counterpart is nonrecursive when engagement does not alter its course; selfrecursivity concerns coordination responsive to its own ongoing state; interrecursivity concerns recursively responsive beings whose responses remain susceptible to one another. This allows the corpus to differentiate the kinds of entities and processes involved in a situation.
Nonrecursive things, such as a stone, a ledger entry, a road surface, or a mathematical notation, do not answer back in the relevant living sense. They can constrain action enormously, and they can carry past labour forward, but they do not themselves reorient their conduct in response to how they are interpreted. Selfrecursive coordination occurs when a living being’s subsequent activity changes in response to registering its own ongoing state, as in bodily self-maintenance. Interrecursive coordination occurs between recursively responsive living counterparts whose responses alter one another’s subsequent responses. Institutions do not abolish this interrecursivity; they stabilize and organize it through durable multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors. Religious mesocosms may also attribute interrecursive capacities to powerful non-human counterparts.
The distinction matters because modern theory repeatedly attributes the wrong kind of recursivity. It treats objects as if they had agency simply because they matter, treats populations as if they were captured by their statistics, or treats bodily disturbance as if it contained a hidden proposition waiting to be decoded. LVT rejects all three moves. A bridge, a written record, and a diagnostic category may be indispensable precisely because they do not “talk back” in the way a human counterpart does. Their nonrecursivity can provide stability. But a recursively responsive person or social coordination cannot safely be treated as a nonresponsive object whose course remains unaffected by classification, intervention, and representation.
The familiar LVT shorthand of L1–L5 helps trace this. L1 denotes smoothly proceeding life, the background coordination that often leaves no symbolic trace. L2 is felt disturbance or misalignment. L3 introduces explicit symbolic articulation; L4 portable symbolic stabilization; L5 reflection on those stabilized systems themselves. A major error is to imagine that L1 and L2 are merely unspoken versions of L3 propositions. A body’s unease is not necessarily a sentence in disguise. A religious offering is not necessarily an encoded theory. A painting is not necessarily a prose claim waiting to be extracted. Symbolization matters, but it is not the universal format of reality.
4. Fit, Not Mere Meaning
The recent core-principles work gives newcomers the clearest entry into LVT’s theory of symbols. Symbolic fit has two axes. Mesocosmic fit asks how well a symbolization fits the mesocosmic coordination or worldly condition it claims to articulate, organize, describe, or intervene in: a diagnosis with a person’s illness, a weather forecast with the atmosphere, a map with a journey, a painting with visible appearance. Intersymbolic fit asks how well one symbolic system coordinates with another: a narrative with a diagnostic code, testimony with a legal category, a clinical note with an administrative database, or an image with an iconographic convention.
These axes must be kept distinct. A chain can be internally immaculate while losing contact with lived experience. A symptom becomes a clinical note; the note becomes a code; the code becomes a statistic; the statistic becomes a graph; the graph becomes a funding claim. Every translation may be accurate relative to the preceding one, yet the chain may have started from a poor rendering of the person’s condition. Conversely, a clinician’s unformalised sense that something is wrong may fit a patient’s situation well while resisting the available categories. LVT does not romanticise intuition; it insists that distinct kinds of fit should not be confused.
Two rules follow. The first is no hidden sentences: do not project symbolic distinctions onto coordination that is not organised symbolically. The second is no master symbolic system: no language, number, image, law, or theory translates all other systems without residue. These are safeguards against both scientific reductionism and interpretive imperialism. They also explain why LVT pays such close attention to ambiguity, compression, expansion, and remainder. When a translation is made, something may be clarified, something may be lost, and something new may be produced by the destination system itself.
5. A Practical Reading Strategy
Do not begin by attempting to master every concept. Start with an experience or discipline you already know, then use it to return to the core vocabulary. The corpus is designed less like a textbook than like a set of connected investigations. The following route works for most readers.
The temptation to avoid is treating the core work as a glossary and the applied work as optional illustration. The applications are where concepts acquire discipline. A category such as “intersymbolic ambiguity” becomes clearer in art history; symbolic sedimentation becomes concrete in statistics and writing; mesocosmic misfit becomes visible in health systems; nonrecursivity becomes tangible in material supports. Read back and forth.
6. Core Principles: The Operating System
The thirteen core-principles articles are the formal anchor of the corpus. They explain why LVT calls itself a theory of living value rather than a new social theory, moral theory, or epistemology. Here the reader encounters the mesocosm, the five mediations, the recursivity levels, the two distributions of recursive attribution and recursive relevance, and the theory of fit. The core work also develops LVT’s account of material sedimentation: recursive coordination can be deposited into traces, tools, buildings, records, and other multimaterial or multisymbolic anchors that later carry coordination without needing to deliberate or answer back.
The You Are My Rock sequence is particularly useful for beginners because it makes this apparently abstract point palpable. A path, a written mark, a wall, a cup, or an infrastructure can carry prior coordination forward because it does not renegotiate its role at every moment. This does not mean that things are alive or that people are reducible to things. It means that human worlds depend upon a partnership between responsive life and nonresponsive supports. When support becomes reliable, attention is freed for other forms of coordination. When it fails, background stability becomes visible as a stake.
The core corpus also warns against another easy mistake: treating LVT as a total theory that overrides specific disciplines. LVT’s own account of fit requires modesty. They are a way of asking whether a proposed code fits the coordination it addresses and whether the analyst’s own distinctions are doing more work than the situation can support.
7. Social Theory: Recovering the Middle World
With twenty-nine articles, social theory is the largest disciplinary section. Its target is the habit of turning living social coordination into portable abstractions: social capital, self-efficacy, culture, class, system, norm, data point, or macro-historical scheme. Such concepts are not automatically useless. They become dangerous when their convenient symbolic form is mistaken for the life they compress.
The discipline’s positive claim is that interrecursivity is a constitutive and irreducible feature of social life. Social worlds nevertheless also depend on selfrecursive living processes, found nonrecursive conditions, and made nonrecursive anchors. People do not simply obey rules or transmit norms. They anticipate, interpret, resist, accommodate, remember, and reorient in relation to one another. Institutions are therefore not static systems sitting above individuals. They are mesocosmic stabilization architectures: arrangements that make some forms of coordination repeatable without ever eliminating the open-ended responsiveness of the people involved.
This changes how newcomers should read the critical essays on Putnam, Bandura, Harari, Marxism, and anthropology. The issue is not merely that these writers have empirical errors. It is that their frameworks can translate the dense texture of life into forms that are convenient for policy, measurement, or theory but no longer answerable to local stakes. The social theory corpus repeatedly asks: what must be erased for this social explanation to work? What forms of availability, dependence, uncertainty, and reciprocal modelling have been converted into a variable?

8. Philosophy: Concepts, Questions, and the Risk of Freezing Life
The philosophy corpus, twenty-three articles strong, is where LVT confronts the tendency of philosophy to mistake its own distinctions for the underlying structure of reality. Its central critique is not that concepts are bad; LVT relies on rigorous concepts. The critique is of recursive freezing, the point at which a useful symbolic stabilisation becomes an alleged ontological foundation. A binary such as subject/object, ready-to-hand/present-at-hand, nature/culture, or representation/reality may illuminate a problem while still failing to exhaust the living process it describes.
The corpus develops askability as an alternative. Rather than treating intellectual history as a competition among answers, askability asks what made a question necessary, pressing, or possible in a particular historical mesocosm. What disturbance, institutional condition, mediational change, or new capacity made this question live? This is a more material and relational history of ideas. It asks not only what philosophers said, but why a world came to require the question they posed.
The philosophy of mathematics articles demonstrate LVT’s demand for precision. Mathematics is not rejected. Its extraordinary success depends on cosmic fit with nonrecursive aspects of reality. The problem begins when success in formal domains is used to claim that recursively responsive worlds are equally tractable in the same way. Human social coordination can change in response to being modelled, governed, classified, and predicted, making the model or prediction itself potentially part of the coordination it addresses. A mathematical model can be exact without being an adequate picture of that kind of world.

9. Life Sciences: Life, Matter, and the Limits of Generalised Agency
The life-sciences corpus supplies the biological and evolutionary ground for LVT. Its recurring question is simple to state and difficult to answer: what does it mean for something to be alive without reducing life to mechanism, sign use, information processing, or human-style agency? The answer turns on metabolic stakes, self-maintenance, recursive coupling, and the difference between living counterparts and nonrecursive deposits.
This is why the corpus criticises biosemiotics and Actor-Network Theory from different directions. It rejects the idea that every living process is an interpretive sign process, and it rejects the claim that objects become equivalent social actors merely because they shape outcomes. The corrective is not a return to inert matter. Objects matter profoundly. A speed bump, a ledger, a building, or a cup can stabilise a human world precisely by holding a relation without responding to it. The slogan “things carry us because they do not talk back” captures this asymmetry.
Sleep and dreaming are important testing grounds. They show that living coordination persists even when ordinary symbolic articulation recedes. The articles on animal intelligence, psychological experiments, and evolutionary thresholds extend the point: life is not first a problem of cognition but of coordinated maintenance. The distinction between zoetic and poietic mediation marks the evolutionary acquisition of a capacity to deposit prior recursive coordination into durable multimaterial and multisymbolic form, making manufactured stability available alongside the found stability of dwelling.

10. Health: From Diagnosis to Recursive Fluidity
The health corpus, with twenty articles, is one of the clearest demonstrations of what LVT changes in applied work. It rejects the assumption that health can be adequately described as disease absence, positive subjective feeling, proper cognition, or efficient medical classification. Instead, LVT understands health as successful ongoing coordination across the five mediations. Recursive fluidity is one important capacity within health: the ability to move between recursivity levels as disturbance is registered, articulated, addressed, and, where possible, remediated into coordination that no longer requires sustained attention. Illness, trauma, and chronic distress often involve a profile of recursive rigidity, in which the person becomes trapped in narrowed loops of anticipation, threat, classification, or bodily recurrence, though this is one possible pattern of impaired coordination rather than illness’s master definition.
This framework changes how diagnosis is understood. LVT distinguishes between a biomedical decision to classify and the subsequent uptake of that classification within a person’s mesocosmic coordination. A threshold may be defensible within a medical system but reorganise a patient’s relations, expectations, self-understanding, work, family life, and access to care in ways that the threshold does not itself measure. The corpus does not say diagnoses are always wrong. It says their fit cannot be inferred from their internal validity alone.
The same analysis applies to digital health, self-tracking, global health, traditional medicine, narrative therapy, and public-health models that divide biological from social causes. The criticism of wearable devices is not nostalgic anti-technology. It asks whether a technology helps a person regain fluid coordination or intensifies vigilance, self-monitoring, and symbolic capture. The criticism of “self-efficacy” is not a denial that confidence matters. It challenges a container model of capability that ignores interrecursive commitment, availability, infrastructure, and material support.

11. Economics: Why Price Is a Late Trace of Value
The economics corpus begins from the claim that economics is often right, but late. Transactions, prices, accounting systems, labour markets, and metrics are real and consequential. Yet they presuppose a much larger field of coordination: bodies able to work, households able to endure, infrastructures that hold, relations of trust and obligation, places that can be dwelt in, and symbolic systems stable enough to record an exchange. Economic value is therefore not created by the transaction alone. A transaction is a selective stabilization within a much larger field of living value. Prices, contracts, ledgers, and other symbolic forms can organize and record aspects of that coordination, but they neither originate nor exhaust the value on which the transaction depends.
This is the target of transactive dualism, the assumption that social life is fundamentally composed of separate agents and discrete exchanges: gift versus commodity, state versus market, buyer versus seller, producer versus consumer. LVT argues that such models capture only selective moments in a continuous mesocosmic process. They become misleading when extended into a universal ontology.
The four-part “Doing the maths” series offers a particularly accessible path. The point is not that counting is immoral. It is that biocommensuration can become ontological overreach when the number’s clarity is treated as the reality it has compressed.

12. Power: Locating the Snag
The power corpus asks how domination operates when it is not reducible to overt coercion, ideology, or surveillance. Its answer is that power frequently reorganises the mesocosm by controlling legibility, muting mediations, converting responsive life into administrative traces, and placing some actors in asymmetrical relations of interpretation. Power is not a substance held by one side. It is a pattern in which some people must model a complex institutional or interpersonal field while others can act through deniable, stabilised procedures.
Asymmetrical interlegibility is the clearest everyday example. In workplace bullying, the target may have to track informal alliances, coded communications, managerial procedure, and reputational framing, while the aggressor can remain legible as a “nice” colleague because the institution treats the target’s detailed account as excessive, subjective, or disruptive. The point is not simply that someone has bad intentions. It is that the administrative setting distributes interpretive burden asymmetrically.
The companion method is snag analysis or da hakt analysis. Instead of starting with broad moral labels, ask where coordination catches: where a process is repeatedly patched, where a cost is deferred, where a single material or symbolic channel is forced to carry a multi-mediated problem, where a population is rendered as a statistic. 13. Religion and Rituals: Coordination Under Asymmetry
The religion-and-rituals corpus is one of the most distinctive parts of LVT because it refuses the standard reduction of religion to belief, myth, symbol, private psychology, or social function. The core proposal is that religion is a form of coordination in which non-human counterparts may be encountered and attributed forms of responsiveness, agency, and often asymmetrical power. The analytical question is not first whether those attributions are metaphysically true or false, but how the resulting coordination is organized, sustained, contested, and made consequential within the mesocosm. Religious practice is not first a collection of propositions about supernatural beings. It is an effort to maintain orientation, discern responsiveness, and act under conditions in which technique alone cannot guarantee an outcome.
So-called superstitions, such as lucky socks before surgery or a sports event, are forms of threshold coordination situated characteristically between L2 and L3. They arise when a present situation of consequential uncertainty reactivates an earlier association between an act, object, or circumstance and an unusually favourable or unfavourable outcome. Their distinctive structure is therefore temporal as well as coordinative: a past experience becomes recursively relevant at a present threshold without necessarily stabilizing into an explicit causal doctrine.
The religion corpus also offers a demanding method for social inquiry. Conceptual harm names ways in which high-level theoretical vocabularies overwrite the stakes of those described: atmospheric overlay, stake substitution, ontological overwrite, tradition-internal suppression, disciplinary ventriloquism, and self-consuming reflexivity. The remedy is mesocosmography: map the lived mediations and practical stakes before imposing a theory. This is not anti-theory; it is theory made accountable to its object.

14. Art: World-Making, Narrative, and Productive Misfit
The art corpus does not treat art as a decorative illustration of LVT. It treats artworks as multimediational practices, often anchored in multimaterial and multisymbolic forms, that can make, sustain, disturb, and renew mesocosmic coordination. A concert hall, cathedral, epic, film, lyric, comic performance, portrait, or horror narrative can arrange attention, material support, social relation, and temporal expectation into a bounded field of livability. This is mesopoiesis: world-making that is not merely representational.
The corpus uses Homer’s Odyssey, Gothic architecture, Renaissance painting, modern literature, cinema, comedy, horror, and narrative theory to show how artistic works organise stakes. The Odyssey is read not simply as the story of a protagonist’s return but as an exploration of interrecursive navigation across competing worlds. Gothic cathedrals are not just symbols of faith; they are multimaterial, institutional, and spatial achievements sustained over centuries. Horror becomes a failure of recursive discernment: a world in which the reader or viewer cannot establish what kind of response is required.
The recent article What Does Art Theory Do? brings the fit framework explicitly into aesthetics. Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait can exhibit extraordinarily high mesocosmic fit in its rendering of light, texture, form, and material appearance while maintaining persistent intersymbolic misfit with the legal or sacramental categories scholars have tried to apply. The lesson is not that interpretation fails. It is that interpretive proliferation may arise from a mismatch between a pictorial source and the conceptual categories demanded of it, rather than from a hidden meaning waiting for the right scholar.

15. How to Read Critically Without Losing the Thread
Because LVT is a critical corpus, beginners may initially encounter a great deal of argument against existing theory: criticism of Heidegger, Latour, Foucault, biosemiotics, Marxism, self-efficacy, social capital, public-health dualisms, and more. Do not read these articles as a series of intellectual takedowns. In each case, the guiding question is constructive: what does the older framework successfully notice, and where does it lose fit with living coordination?
Three habits help. First, identify the mediation being muted. Is an argument ignoring embodiment, material support, spatial dwelling, being-with, or the specific work of symbolization? Second, identify the recursivity error. Has a nonrecursive trace been treated as living agency? Has an interrecursive situation been treated as though it were a nonresponsive object whose course is unaffected by how it is engaged? Has a felt disturbance been treated as a hidden proposition? Third, identify the form of fit at stake. Is the problem an empirical mismatch with the world, a failed translation between symbolic systems, or a category that produces new realities by its very application?
This method makes the corpus usable beyond its own examples. A reader can apply it to a policy dashboard, a diagnostic manual, a corporate measure, a research protocol, a museum label, a religious debate, or an AI workflow. But use it modestly. The point is not to label every problem “misfit” or every abstraction “violence.” LVT asks for more detailed attention: what coordination is occurring, what makes it possible, where is it breaking, and what intervention would restore or protect livability rather than merely improve legibility?
Conclusion: What the Corpus Is For
The complete LVT corpus is best understood as an attempt to recover a common object for the human sciences without flattening that object into a system, variable, code, or story. That object is the mesocosm: the lived field of coordination in which bodies, counterparts, places, materials, and symbols must somehow be held together. Every discipline in the corpus studies a different pressure on that field. Health examines fluidity and rigidity. Economics examines the late symbolic traces of value. Power examines unequal legibility and institutional snags. Religion examines orientation under asymmetry. Art examines world-making and productive ambiguity. Philosophy examines conceptual freezing.
