Continuous Recursive Mediation in the Mesocosm
Living beings do not first know, judge, or choose, and only afterward act. Before anything is named or decided, it is already being lived, in the ease or difficulty with which a body moves through its day, a relationship holds, a place remains habitable. This ongoing, prior process is coordination, and Living Value Theory begins from it rather than from thought, meaning, or transaction.
Coordination is a process. What that process is for is stability: not stasis, but the achievement, preservation, and, when necessary, deliberate transformation of a livable world. A body in good health does not experience its health as an achievement; it simply moves through the world. A relationship that holds does not announce itself as holding. Life at its most successful does not look like effort. It looks like nothing happening, which is exactly what makes it easy to overlook and easy to undervalue.
What is always at stake in coordination is whether this achievement can be sustained. Stakes are not symbolic assessments of risk. They are mesocosmic facts about what depends on a coordination’s success: what would be lost, damaged, or made unavailable if the coordination fails. The most fundamental stake is the ongoing availability of the mesocosm itself, the capacity to continue coordinating at all. Every other stake is a specification of this general condition in terms of the five irreducible mediations through which it is maintained.
Stakes are distributed across parties, and typically asymmetrically. In any coordination, some parties bear higher stakes than others. Stake allocation refers to how the stakes of a
given coordination are distributed among those involved, and this asymmetry is often a primary source of social and political conflict: those who bear the highest stakes in a coordination’s success or failure are not always those with the greatest authority to determine how it proceeds. The most consequential forms of institutional harm typically involve precisely this structure.
The five stakes conditions are not a hierarchy. No mediation is more fundamental than the others in the diagnosis of vitality. Vitality, the successful, ongoing coordination of a living being with the world and with others, is irreducibly multi-mediational: the stakes of any one domain cannot be fully met in isolation from the others. A person who is physically healthy but relationally isolated has their embodiment stake addressed while their being-with stake remains unmet, and the incompleteness will eventually compound across all domains. Vitality is always the coordination of all five mediations simultaneously, and its assessment always requires attending to all five at once.
Coordination is rarely perfect and never permanently settled. Most mesocosmic coordination involves ongoing tension, partial breakdown, local repair, redundancy, and compromise; failure at some scale is a constant condition of living systems, not an exception to be eliminated. Vitality does not mean the absence of strain. It means that strain is being continuously and adequately remediated across the five mediations, not that it is absent.
The Mesocosm
Coordination requires a field in which it occurs. Living beings do not coordinate in the abstract; they coordinate within a specific, textured, historically accumulated field that makes some coordinations easy and others difficult, that registers success and breakdown, and that carries forward the results of past coordination as a condition of present coordination. This field is the mesocosm.
The mesocosm is the world as it is lived rather than the world as it is in itself or as it is represented in thought. It is not a layer of belief laid over a separate, pre-given reality; there is no split, in LVT, between a subject who represents and an object represented. A Jain practitioner who handles vegetables with extraordinary care is not adding a belief on top of a biological fact shared with a biologist who handles the same vegetables differently. The two are coordinating differently, and their different coordinations constitute different forms of availability. Neither is added interpretation over a common substrate; each is what that substrate actually is, for the being coordinating with it.
The mesocosm replaces both “culture” and “society” as the primary unit of analysis, because it attends to the actual texture of coordination rather than to shared meanings or institutional structures considered in the abstract. It is always specific and never merely individual: shared, contested, layered, and sedimented with the accumulated history of prior coordination.
That sedimentation is not homogeneous. Every mesocosm is constituted simultaneously by two different kinds of accumulated ground. Some of what a living being encounters as already-there was never made by anyone: the terrain, the climate, the solar cycle, the given shape of the physical world. Some of it was made: a road, a law, a building, an archive, a name, deposited by prior recursive coordination and left behind for later coordination to encounter as though it, too, were simply there. Every present act of coordination occurs within both found and made ground at once.
The Mediations: Coordination Occurs in Irreducibly Different Ways
Coordination is not one kind of process. A body maintaining itself, a person responding to another person, and a living being situated within a landscape are not variations on a single underlying activity; they are categorically different modes of coordination, none reducible to the others. LVT calls these modes mediations, and identifies five: embodiment, being-with, dwelling, multimateriality, and multisymbolization.
The five are not five parallel items on a list. They belong to three distinct ontological families.
Embodiment and being-with are the two zoetic recursive mediations: modes of coordination internal to living process itself, in which the counterpart being coordinated with, a body, another person, answers back, in the specific senses defined below.
Dwelling is the unique zoetic nonrecursive mediation: the one mode of coordination, prior to any human making, in which the counterpart does not answer back at all. A mountain does not respond to being climbed. Weather does not respond to being forecast. Dwelling is coordination structured by place, terrain, geology, climate, season, and the great astronomical and planetary regularities, the given, non-human-created conditions within which every living being finds itself situated and must coordinate on the counterpart’s own uneven and uncontrollable terms. It is found nonrecursive orientation, present in the world before any organism arrived to make use of it, and it is not the same as “place plus built environment.” A house, a road, a wall, a city, an archive, an institution: none of these belongs to dwelling. Each is a made thing, a deposit of prior recursive coordination into durable form, and each belongs instead to one of the two remaining mediations.
Multimateriality and multisymbolization are the coupled poietic mediations, unique to the lineage that developed the sustained capacity to deposit recursive coordination into relatively nonrecursive form. Multimateriality is not simply “the physical world of things.” Its defining character is that it takes prior recursive coordination and deposits it into durable material organization: a path is repeated movement sedimented into altered ground; a chair is an expected bodily posture sedimented into wood and joinery; a bridge is anticipated future coordination sedimented into engineering. Multimateriality is not about objects considered in themselves. It is about manufactured stability. Multisymbolization is not primarily communication. Its defining character is that it lets a distinction, once drawn, persist across absence, delay, distance, and death: a name persists across every change its bearer undergoes; a written law persists after everyone present at its drafting has died; a calendar takes a found astronomical regularity and turns it into a made, countable, humanly organized expectation. Multisymbolization deposits durable symbolic anchors for exactly the same reason multimateriality deposits durable material ones: so that a prior act of coordination need not be performed again from nothing.
Each of the five mediations contributes something none of the other four can supply. Embodiment uniquely contributes the recursive maintenance of a living body. Being-with uniquely contributes recursive mutual responsiveness between living beings. Dwelling uniquely contributes found nonrecursive orientation, the one stable ground life did not have to build for itself. Multimateriality uniquely contributes durable material sedimentation. Multisymbolization uniquely contributes durable symbolic sedimentation. None can be derived from any other.
What is at stake in each mediation follows from what that mediation uniquely contributes.
What is at stake in embodiment is the viability of the body as a medium of coordination. What is at stake in being-with is the viability of ongoing relational responsiveness. What is at stake in dwelling is the viability of situatedness, the capacity to be oriented in space and time within conditions no one made. What is at stake in multimateriality and
multisymbolization together is the viability of the deposits a community depends on without having personally produced them.
Recursivity, Stability, Predictability, and Controllability Are Independent
If the five mediations answer the question of how coordination differs by mode, a further and equally foundational distinction answers a different question: how a given counterpart within any mediation behaves, once coordination is under way. Four properties are involved, and they must be kept separate rather than treated as though they moved together.
Recursivity is categorical. A counterpart is recursive when how it proceeds is affected by how it is engaged, and nonrecursive when nothing about the engagement alters its course. Within the recursive category, self-recursivity names a being’s coordination with its own ongoing state; interrecursivity names coordination between beings each responding to the other’s response in turn. This category admits no degrees. A counterpart either answers back or it does not.
Stability concerns the rate and extent of a counterpart’s own variation, and it does not track recursive category at all. A bone is selfrecursive and highly stable. A heartbeat is equally selfrecursive and rapidly variable. A mountain is nonrecursive and highly stable. Weather is equally nonrecursive and rapidly variable. Recursive type does not determine stability.
Predictability concerns whether an observer can anticipate a counterpart’s future variation, and it tracks neither of the first two properties cleanly. The solar cycle is nonrecursive and extremely predictable. A storm is equally nonrecursive and only partly predictable, since its governing laws are fixed but its initial conditions are not fully trackable. A ritualized greeting is interrecursive and yet strongly patterned. An intimate relationship may be stable and predictable for years and remain, throughout, open to a transformation nothing in its prior pattern gave any warning of.
Controllability names the extent to which a counterpart’s future state can be deliberately shaped by design rather than merely anticipated by observation, and it is the decisive variable poiesis introduces into this landscape. Dwelling illustrates every combination of the first three properties without ever crossing into the fourth: the sun is reliable but was arranged by no one and can be adjusted by no one. A made anchor differs precisely because its stability has been organized, layer by layer, around a purpose no boulder or storm was ever organized around.
A fifth property becomes indispensable once poiesis is at issue: durability, or sedimentability, the extent to which a formed state persists beyond the particular activity that produced it. A shout dies the instant it stops being made. An inscription persists for as long as the material that carries it survives. Manufacturing an anchor means raising a counterpart’s sedimentability far above what its recursive origins would otherwise have allowed it to keep.
The Three Recursive Types, and the Distinctive Problem Interrecursivity Poses
Because entities differ in whether and how they respond to being coordinated with, distinct governance logics become necessary, and LVT names three recursive types to capture the difference.
Nonrecursive coordination involves counterparts that do not respond to being described, measured, or engaged: a property boundary, a kidney stone, the moon’s cycle. Rules, measurements, and codified categories achieve excellent fit here, because the domain holds still while being governed. Selfrecursive coordination involves counterparts that respond to their own monitoring and self-description: a body regulated through attention to diet and exercise, an institution that adjusts to its own measured outputs. Governance here achieves only moderate fit, because measurement changes what it measures. Interrecursive coordination involves multiple recursively responsive counterparts responding to each other’s responses: conversation, negotiation, care, conflict, teaching, love. Nonrecursive governance logic achieves poor fit here; any rule introduced becomes part of the dynamics it was meant to govern.
A mediation is not inherently nonrecursive, selfrecursive, or interrecursive. What varies across mesocosms is not which mediations exist, all five are always present, but how recursive types are attributed across the beings and domains that populate a given mesocosm.
Interrecursivity poses the distinctive governance problem around which an enormous share of human civilization has organized itself. Mutual unpredictability is not a deficiency of interrecursive coordination; it is constitutive of what makes care, negotiation, and love what they are. But precisely because interrecursive coordination cannot be settled the way nonrecursive coordination can, and cannot be self-regulated the way selfrecursive coordination can, large-scale interrecursive life among strangers, at a scale beyond what direct, face-to-face responsiveness alone could ever hold together, poses a governance problem no purely zoetic mediation can solve on its own. Institutions, law, technology, writing, cities, money, and archives are a lineage of solutions to exactly this problem: the metabolic challenge of coordinating interrecursive life at a scale that direct responsiveness cannot reach unaided.
Recursive Discernment as the Living Activity Beneath Attribution
Before any stabilized account of what kind of thing a given counterpart is, there is an ongoing, living activity through which that account gets formed in the first place. LVT calls this recursive discernment, and treats it as prior to, rather than as a byproduct of, the attributions it eventually settles into.
Recursive discernment is the continual activity through which living beings determine which aspects of an encountered entity are relevant to the coordination at hand, what forms of recursive organization those aspects exhibit, how much uncertainty remains, and whether further discernment is warranted. It operates primarily at L1, in bodily attunement, prior to any symbolic elaboration, and it is aspect-specific: no entity possesses one recursive type as a whole, and living beings continually discern the distribution of recursive dynamics across the different aspects of any entity they engage.
Recursive attribution, the settled sense of what kind of recursively responsive being a given counterpart is engaged as, is not a separate, prior fact discernment merely registers. It is a temporary stabilization of discernment. An attribution regime is such a stabilization sedimented, shared, and transmitted across generations: what began as ongoing, aspectspecific discovery has settled into a transmitted pattern, carried in posture, habit, and infrastructure long before it ever surfaces as an explicit claim. The statement that the moon is nonrecursive is shorthand for an entire history of discernment: every lunar aspect around which human coordination has ever been organized has, under all feedback so far, exhibited nonrecursive regularities.
This ordering is what keeps LVT outside both naive realism and unrestricted constructivism. Attribution regimes are mesocosmic through and through, and continually contestable; the coordinative feedback that sustains, revises, or dissolves them is not at the mesocosm’s disposal in the same way. A regime that attributes interrecursive capacities to a mountain can be sustained across millennia, because nothing in the coordination forces its revision. A regime that attributed no responsiveness to a herd animal would fail at the first attempt to drive it.
Recursive Attribution and Recursive Relevance:Conservatism and Change
Every mesocosm is organized through two simultaneous and logically independent distributions built on the foundation the preceding section established. Recursive attribution determines what kind of recursively responsive being a given entity is engaged as. Recursive relevance determines how much of ongoing coordination actually depends on that entity, how much of life is organized around it.
The two vary independently. A commodity is attributed as nonrecursive yet, in modern market societies, carries extremely high relevance. An ancestor may be attributed interrecursive capacities while carrying low relevance in a mesocosm where the practices of active veneration have lapsed. Understanding any mesocosm requires asking both questions separately for the full range of entities that populate it.
Of the two, attribution is the historically conservative one. Sedimented into posture, infrastructure, and bodily practice, it tends to persist stably across generations, resistant to casual revision, and where it changes, it typically changes through sustained contestation over long periods. Relevance is the principal engine of historical transformation. It is continuously redistributed as coordination practices evolve, technologies develop, institutions transform, and communities reorganize, and the history of any mesocosm is substantially the history of this redistribution. Technology, religion, capitalism, modernity, institutions, and politics operate primarily through redistributions of recursive relevance rather than through wholesale changes in recursive attribution. The moon illustrates the point with unusual clarity: its attribution has remained nonrecursive throughout human history, while its relevance for night illumination, calendrics, and open-water navigation has collapsed, not because the moon changed but because artificial lighting, mechanical clocks, and industrial navigation took over the vitality functions lunar coordination once served.
Relevance is redistributed through three processes. Relevance conferral occurs when an entity newly enters active coordination and comes to matter enough that a mesocosm builds structures around it. Relevance withdrawal occurs when an entity is progressively removed from active coordination without any necessary change in how it continues to be attributed; technology is the primary instrument of withdrawal in modern societies, and science performs a distinctive form of it by reattributing entities from interrecursive or selfrecursive to nonrecursive type, which tends to reduce their relevance because nonrecursive entities are more easily substituted for and governed by calculation rather than relationship. Relevance restoration occurs when relevance is rebuilt around an entity whose relevance had lapsed, or newly established where none existed before; religion, environmentalism, and political recognition movements characteristically perform this work.
Redundancy is one of the deepest properties of a healthy mesocosm. Mesocosmic coordination is rarely dependent on a single mechanism for any given vitality stake; multiple coordinations typically support the same stake simultaneously, and this multiplicity is protective, allowing a stake to remain met even when any one supporting coordination fails locally. Redundancy explains why conceptual mistakes can survive for decades without triggering visible collapse, why institutions remain functional despite local failures, and why collapse, when it eventually comes, is so often delayed well past the point at which the underlying coordination first began to fail: other coordinations are quietly compensating for the shortfall, until they too are exhausted.
When relevance is redistributed, the diagnostic question is always the same: are the underlying vitality stakes still being addressed by whatever mechanism has taken over. Sometimes yes, and the redistribution is liberating. Sometimes no, and it is damaging. The assessment must be made mediational domain by mediational domain, and it is a separate, normative question from the purely descriptive one of what a mesocosm currently organizes its coordination around.
Levels of Recursivity: The Architecture of Remediation
Because coordination can break down, and because a breakdown must be registered, named, and addressed if it is to be repaired, an architecture of remediation becomes necessary. LVT names five levels through which threatened vitality moves from felt disturbance toward organized response.
L1 is primary mesocosmic coordination, life proceeding without explicit reflection. Its defining feature is not that it is static but that it is recursively maintained without demanding attention: a healthy body does not have to be monitored to keep working correctly. L1 should not be understood as a settled state passively possessed. It is continuous successful mediation that no longer requires attention, actively sustained against the same pressures that would otherwise erode it, and it counts as vitality only while disturbance remains registerable and repair remains reachable; smoothness achieved by foreclosing that registration is naturalized harm, not vitality.
L2 is the registration of threatened vitality, the level at which something feels off before it can be fully named. It is simultaneously diagnostic and generative: it signals strain, and it opens the possibility of repair. The suppression of L2, preventing felt misalignment from becoming registerable, is among the most damaging forms of conceptual harm, because it removes the only signal that could trigger remediation at all.
L3 is the level at which something becomes symbolically articulated as this specific thing, embedded within an ongoing coordinative field: this pain, this promise, this danger, named for this interaction rather than portably. L4 is the level at which symbolic forms become abstracted and stabilized into classifications, doctrines, or institutional categories that travel beyond the coordination that generated them. L4 is indispensable, since without it remediation cannot be organized at the scale collective life requires, but it is also the level of greatest risk, because abstraction introduces distance between a category and the specific coordination it was built to address. L5 is the level at which L4 systems themselves become objects of reflection: critique, genealogy, theory. LVT itself operates at L5.
The levels are not a fixed hierarchy. Recursive fluidity is the capacity to move between them in ways that preserve and repair coordination, with the constant aim of returning to L1 with better coordination rather than remaining in indefinite meta-reflection. The distribution of recursive fluidity, who can move between levels, who is locked into L4 categories, whose L2 signals are suppressed, is a dimension of power.
Poiesis: The Capacity to Persist Beyond the Interaction
Coordination that could only ever occur in the present, between the parties immediately engaged in it, would be permanently vulnerable to loss the moment those parties were absent, forgetful, or dead. Because coordination must be able to persist beyond the interaction that produced it, a further capacity becomes necessary: the capacity to deposit recursive coordination into a durable, relatively nonrecursive form that other, later parties can encounter without needing to reconstruct the original coordination from nothing. LVT calls this capacity poiesis, an evolutionary transformation of the mesocosm itself, carried by the coupled operation of multimateriality and multisymbolization.
Before poiesis, stability could only be found. Life coordinated recursively through embodiment and being-with while dwelling supplied the one categorically nonrecursive mediation available as external anchor, uneven, uncontrollable, and indifferent to any organism’s purposes. After poiesis, stability can also be manufactured. This single evolutionary transition explains an extraordinary amount of subsequent human history on its own.
The transformation follows a strict and irreversible direction. Recursive coordination can produce nonrecursive deposits, but those deposits never preserve the original recursion itself. A written promise is not the living relation of trust between the people who made it; a road is not the repeated recursive negotiation of a route that produced it. What a deposit preserves instead is constraints, affordances, traces, possibilities, and orientations available to entirely new recursive processes that were not present at the deposit’s making. This oneway architecture is why history accumulates rather than repeats: each layer of deposit becomes part of the given conditions the next round of recursive coordination has to work within, and no amount of later engagement converts a deposit back into the living recursive process that first produced it.
Poiesis does not, however, remove recursion from the system; it relocates where recursion has to occur. A document has to be read and its meaning agreed upon before it can settle anything. A road has to be maintained. A rule has to be enforced by someone willing to apply it, and it will eventually meet a case its makers never foresaw. Recursion reappears around interpretation, maintenance, enforcement, exception, resistance, and revision, even as the deposit itself holds still. Manufacturing nonrecursive anchors therefore makes a far greater volume and reach of recursive life possible than would otherwise exist, rather than making life less recursive overall: writing lets an argument be conducted across centuries between people who never met; money lets valuation be coordinated among strangers who share no other relationship at all.
Sedimentation and Civilization
Because poietic deposits accumulate across generations rather than existing singly, an account of that accumulation becomes necessary. LVT calls the accumulation
sedimentation, and defines civilization as the cumulative, intergenerational sedimentation of recursive coordination into multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors that restructure the conditions of later life.
Every clause of this definition does specific work. Cumulative marks that deposits build on previous deposits rather than replacing them. Intergenerational marks that they outlast their particular makers. Sedimentation marks that origins become layered and partly obscured, so a later inhabitant can encounter a deposit without knowing what recursive coordination first produced it. Restructure marks the definition’s most consequential clause: civilization organizes what can happen next for people who had no part in producing the record now shaping their options, rather than merely recording what has already happened.
Civilization is not primarily urbanization, state formation, agriculture, or cultural complexity in general. Each of these is a particular manifestation of accumulated poietic deposit rather than an independent phenomenon: a city is a dense concentration of multimaterial and multisymbolic anchors; agriculture makes dwelling’s own seasonal stability partly controllable; writing is multisymbolic sedimentation applied to speech; state organization is multisymbolic sedimentation applied to authority and obligation across a population too large for interrecursive coordination alone to hold together. Human beings inherit not simply genes and environments but organized anchors, routes, tools, buildings, categories, languages, offices, debts, rights, borders, archives, and the dead continue to organize the living not through supernatural agency but through the entirely material and symbolic fact that their recursive activity has been sedimented into ground the living now have no choice but to coordinate within.
Stability, made this way, carries no guarantee of virtue. Every made anchor deposits a selective history rather than a neutral one; a road privileges the destinations it reaches simply by existing, and a category forecloses whatever falls outside its terms. Poietic power consists in significant part in the capacity to sediment one’s own preferences into other people’s dwelling so thoroughly that those preferences eventually cease to be recognized as preferences at all. And no deposit accomplishes anything on its own unless it is taken up again by a living being who returns to it; sedimentation stores a possibility of coordination, and recursive uptake actualizes it, which is why a deposit can sit dormant for years or centuries before anyone puts it back to work, and why civilizational collapse is better understood as the loss of a population’s capacity to maintain and interpret its own deposits than as the physical disappearance of the deposits themselves.
Institutions as Stabilizations of Interrecursivity
Institutions are the clearest instance of poiesis solving the governance problem interrecursivity poses. An institution is not primarily a symbolic system or an organizational structure. It is a stabilization of interrecursivity: a manufactured, multimaterial and multisymbolic anchor built specifically to make coordination between recursively responsive beings predictable at a scale direct, face-to-face responsiveness could never reach on its own. A university requires campuses, libraries, timetables, degrees, disciplinary categories, archives, examination rules, and employment contracts, and none of these alone constitutes a university in any sense recognizable to anyone who has attended one; together they manufacture predictable coordination among scholars, students, and staff who could never all be mutually and directly responsive to one another the way two people in conversation are. Courts, markets, marriages, football competitions, and scientific disciplines are understandable the same way: each manufactures a specific, durable form of predictable coordination between interrecursively responsive beings who would otherwise have to renegotiate that coordination from nothing on every occasion it was needed.
Culture
Culture is not best understood as symbolic inheritance or shared meaning considered on its own. It is the cumulative cultivation of embodiment, dwelling, and being-with, the three zoetic mediations, carried out through multimaterial and multisymbolic sedimentation, the two poietic mediations. Culture is the ongoing cultivation and transmission of recursive life across all five mediations, and can exist, as it has for most of human history, alongside comparatively limited durable sedimentation, since a great deal of cultural transmission relies on embodied practice and living memory rather than written record or monumental structure. Civilization names the point at which sedimentation has grown dense and layered enough that inherited anchors, rather than living memory, become the primary medium through which a population coordinates with its own past. Naming a society more civilized in this sense is a claim about the extent of its accumulated poietic deposits, not a claim about the worth of the people who produced them.
Symbolic Modes
Symbols do not always do the same thing, and confusing their modes is a major source of symbolic overreach. In coordination mode, a symbol participates directly in the coordination it names: the word “fire” shouted in a burning building is part of the evacuation it names, not a report about one. In reference-to-absence mode, a symbol stands for something not immediately present, the mode of memory, narrative, and most descriptive language, and the mode in which symbols most easily become detached from the coordinations they originally named. In re-presentation mode, a symbol claims to make present again something once present but now absent, or something never directly experienced, the mode of ritual, art, and theory, and the mode in which symbolic authority is most easily overstated. A single symbolic act can operate in more than one mode at once, but the modes can be confused, and that confusion is where much symbolic harm originates.
The Trapdoor of Ordinary Symbolization
Ordinary symbolic practice hides its own operations, and this is a functional feature rather than a deficiency; symbols that constantly announced their own mode, level, and bandwidth would be unusable. But the trapdoor has consequences. It becomes possible to mistake a coordination act for a description, an L4 abstraction for an L3 entity-name, a concept operating across all five mediations for one confined to a single mediation. The most consequential form is the disguised L4: an abstraction, “depression,” “GDP,” “race,” “the economy,” presenting itself as though it named something directly present rather than something generalized from many cases. The disguise matters because it suppresses the question of fit; if a concept appears to name what is simply there, the question of whether it actually serves the coordination it claims to describe never arises.
L4 Operations: Typology, Binaries, and Justification
Not all L4 abstraction is harmful, and conceptual responsibility requires distinguishing between different types of L4 operation. Protective L4 interrupts harmful L1 naturalization, making visible coordinations that had been operating as if they were simply natural and reopening the askability that naturalization had closed: categories such as “abuse,” “coercion,” “exploitation,” or “discrimination” are L4 abstractions whose protective function depends on their capacity to interrupt the naturalization of harm. Extractive L4 captures coordination for institutional, theoretical, or symbolic-class purposes without returning anything to the coordination it describes. Mechanical L4 is abstraction applied because inherited theory expects it, not because the mesocosm generates the question. Disguised L4 presents itself as immediate entity-naming, already described above. Runaway L4 has become self-validating and no longer checks itself against the coordination it originally named.
Binaries are a special case of L4 abstraction. A binary takes a continuous or multidimensional coordination and compresses it into a two-value distinction: yes or no, normal or pathological, permitted or forbidden, citizen or non-citizen, male or female, nature or culture. Binaries are extraordinarily powerful symbolic tools, indispensable in many domains, but they are always L4 operations. The mesocosm does not contain binaries. It contains coordinations that are more or less smooth, more or less strained, more or less available to symbolic articulation. The harm of binaries arises when a binary is mistaken for a direct description of the mesocosm, when coordinations that do not fit it become invisible, pathologized, or excluded.
Justification is not merely explanation. It is a recursive intervention into coordination. When a coordination is justified, explained, or legitimated, it is already removed from its L1 naturalness, and this removal can take three forms with very different consequences. Coordination without justification is the normal condition of most coordination: L1 through L3 arrangements operate without requiring explicit L4 or L5 defence, and this is not inherently problematic. Justification with re-coordination introduces a rift into existing coordination but installs a new coordination in its place; this is the productive form, disrupting what was harmful and repairing what was disrupted. Phantom justification without remediation explains, relativizes, or debunks a coordination without providing a viable repair, leaving those whose coordination has been disrupted without remedy. Conceptual responsibility includes the obligation to ask, whenever a justification or critique weakens an existing coordination, what will replace it; if the answer is nothing, the justification may itself be a form of conceptual harm, regardless of how theoretically correct it is.
Mediational and Recursivity Bandwidth
Mediational bandwidth names the range of mediations a concept, practice, or institution can hold in view simultaneously. Low bandwidth is not always a deficiency; specialized concepts often work precisely by narrowing it. The problem arises when a low-bandwidth concept, “social capital,” attending almost exclusively to being-with, is applied to a coordination that in fact operates across all five mediations at once. Recursivity bandwidth names the range of recursivity levels a concept or institution can hold in view. An institution able to recognize experience only at L4, through its own categories, cannot attend to L1 coordination, L2 felt misalignment, or L3 articulations that do not fit its categories, and the result is systematic suppression of whatever does not translate into institutional form.
Symbolic Overreach and Mesocosmic Misfit
Mesocosmic fit exists as a criterion because symbolic operations can serve or damage the vitality stakes they claim to address, and the difference is not always apparent from within the symbolic operation itself. Symbolic overreach occurs when a symbolic operation claims more authority than its mediational and recursive structure can support, producing mesocosmic misfit: a concept that fails to preserve the coordination it claims to describe, guide, or repair. Several forms of misfit recur. Original misfit begins from a poor description of the domain. Mediational misfit collapses several mediations into one. Recursivity misfit operates at one level while presenting itself as belonging to another. Type misfit applies non-recursive governance logic to selfrecursive or interrecursive coordination, diagnosed by persistent coordination failure rather than by metaphysical inspection of what the entities involved really are. Causal misfit identifies the wrong source of a breakdown. Evaluative misfit imposes criteria of success that do not belong to the coordination being assessed. Action misfit generates interventions that worsen the coordination they were meant to repair.
Redistribution of Recursivity and Forced Misarticulation
Institutions do not merely classify experience; they can relocate the recognized authority to define what an experience counts as, away from the person undergoing it and toward an authorized institutional site: diagnosis, complaint, eligibility criterion, offence. This redistribution of recursivity is often a class practice, carried out by a symbolic class, academics, bureaucrats, financiers, clinicians, consultants, whose power derives from producing, stabilizing, and circulating symbolic forms, and whose characteristic danger is mistaking symbolic authority for mesocosmic authority.
Forced misarticulation is the specific harm that results when a person is required to speak, but only in a symbolic form that distorts what they are trying to say: a complaint form that requires harm to be described as procedural failure, a clinical form that requires distress to be described as symptom clusters. It is a more damaging constraint than silence, because it makes distortion appear as participation.
Value and the Muting of Coordination
Value is not what is measured, exchanged, or symbolically recognized. It is what sustains, repairs, intensifies, or improves coordination. This produces the principle of invisible value: the coordinations most fully meeting a vitality stake are also the most likely to disappear from view, precisely because they no longer need attention.
Life succeeds not by maximizing attention but by continuously muting the recursive workload a given coordination requires, until that coordination disappears into L1. A relationship that must be constantly monitored, negotiated, and reasserted is not thereby a more successful relationship; it is one whose coordination has not yet been, or can no longer be, muted. Symbolic systems tend to work in the opposite direction, overvaluing what can be named, measured, displayed, and audited, and undervaluing exactly the coordination that has succeeded well enough to require none of that. This is not merely a measurement error. It systematically redirects resources away from the coordinations that matter most and toward those that are merely most symbolically legible, and it is compounded by relevance withdrawal, as the coordination mechanisms that once sustained a stake lose relevance and become invisible to the very symbolic systems now allocating attention and resources.
Askability, Mesocosmography, and Methodological Humility
L2 felt misalignment is the primary source of innovation in the mesocosm. When coordination becomes strained, something becomes askable that was not askable before, a question generated from within the coordination itself rather than imported from an external theoretical agenda. A concept is mesocosmically legitimate only if it answers a question the coordination itself makes askable; a concept that answers a question the coordination never generated is symbolic overreach, however elegant it may be theoretically.
This is why mesocosmography, the analytic method LVT uses, does not begin by imposing its own categories on a case. It begins by asking what is vital here, and allows the case to declare its own coordinative organization before the architecture is brought to bear. Mesocosmography traces the five mediations across the levels of recursivity, asks how recursive types are attributed and how relevance is distributed and redistributed, and studies recursive mediational attribution comparatively: which entities, within a given mesocosm, are attributed which mediations, which recursive types, and which relevance, rather than sorting mesocosms into pre-given ontological categories of belief or culture.
The ethical name for mesocosmic fit, where symbolic accounts are applied to people who have not consented to them, is conceptual justice: the requirement that a symbolic account remain accountable to the coordination it claims to describe, rather than overriding the askability or self-articulation of those whose coordination is being interpreted.
Ontological Validation and Heuristic Validation
A theory of this kind can be assessed in two distinct registers, and both apply. The first is ontological: whether the architecture presented here is true, whether coordination really is structured through five irreducible mediations, three recursive types, and the poietic capacity to sediment recursion into durable form. The second is heuristic: whether the architecture, applied to a given case, consistently generates richer descriptions, sharper diagnoses, and more productive questions than the competing frameworks available for the same case. These two questions are not reducible to one another, and the second does not defer to the first; a framework can be heuristically valuable in specific domains well before, or even independently of, any final resolution of its ontological claims.
Living Value Theory Applied to Itself
LVT operates at L5, and its own standards apply to it before they apply to anything else. By its own criterion of askability, LVT presents itself not as an external philosophy applied to life but as an L5 response to accumulated coordination failure, and it is to be judged by its remediational consequences rather than by its theoretical sophistication alone. LVT is itself a product of the symbolic class it analyzes, and its own concepts remain exposed to the failures they name; if its categories begin to circulate as disguised L4s, or to extract coordination for symbolic-class purposes, or to run away from the coordinations that generated them, the framework supplies the concepts with which to say so, and those concepts apply to LVT before they apply to anything else.
Scope and Extensions
Coordination is primary and aims at stability without becoming static. Coordination occurs in the mesocosm, constituted simultaneously by found and made ground. Coordination occurs through five irreducible mediations belonging to three families: the zoetic recursive pair of embodiment and being-with, the zoetic nonrecursive mediation of dwelling, and the coupled poietic pair of multimateriality and multisymbolization. Counterparts within any mediation vary independently along four further axes: recursivity, stability, predictability, and controllability, with durability added once poiesis is at issue. Coordination differs by recursive type, nonrecursive, selfrecursive, interrecursive, with interrecursivity posing the distinctive governance problem of large-scale human life. Recursive discernment is the living activity beneath recursive attribution, which is conservative, and recursive relevance, which is the principal engine of historical change, redistributed through conferral, withdrawal, and restoration, and protected against local failure by redundancy. Threatened vitality moves through five levels of recursivity, from seamless L1 coordination to L5 metareflection, aimed always at returning to L1. Poiesis is the evolutionary capacity to deposit recursive coordination into durable nonrecursive form, following a one-way arrow from process to deposit. Sedimentation is the intergenerational accumulation of such deposits, and civilization is that accumulation named directly; institutions are its clearest solution to the problem of large-scale interrecursivity; culture is the cultivation of the three zoetic mediations through the two poietic ones. Symbols operate in three modes and hide their own mode, level, and bandwidth behind an ordinary trapdoor, producing symbolic overreach and mesocosmic misfit when the hiding goes unexamined. L4 abstraction takes protective, extractive, mechanical, disguised, and runaway forms, and justification of a coordination can leave it un-repaired, repaired, or merely debunked. Institutions can redistribute the recognized authority to interpret experience, and can force misarticulation on those who bear it. Value is what sustains coordination, most valuably when least visible, achieved by muting recursive workload rather than by maximizing attention. Mesocosmography proceeds by askability rather than by imposed category, and LVT’s own claims are subject
to both ontological and heuristic assessment, and to the same conceptual responsibility the theory applies to everything else.
LVT Diagnostic Questions
What is vital here, and what would count as its loss?
What stakes are in play, and how are they allocated among the parties involved?
What coordinations are operating, and at what level of recursivity?
Which mediations are salient, and which are being suppressed?
Is this counterpart’s stability, predictability, and controllability being conflated with its recursive type?
What recursive types are attributed here, and how is that attribution being sedimented or contested?
Which entities carry recursive relevance, and what redundancy currently protects the stake they serve?
What processes of relevance conferral, withdrawal, or restoration are under way?
Is this a found anchor or a made one, and if made, what recursive coordination does it deposit?
What institution, if any, is stabilizing an interrecursive coordination here, and for whom?
What symbolic operations are in play, and in what mode?
What kind of L4 operation is this, protective, extractive, mechanical, disguised, or runaway, and what does it suppress?
If a coordination has been justified or critiqued, has it been re-coordinated, or only debunked?
Where is recursivity being redistributed, and who bears the cost?
What forced misarticulations are in play?
Where coordination runs smoothly, has it been muted successfully, or has disturbance simply been foreclosed?
What would mesocosmic fit require here, and does this account remain accountable to the coordination it names?
