Abstract

Across independent healing and mythic traditions, the body is persistently mapped onto landscape—and vice versa—through stable pairings such as bone with stone, flesh with earth, and blood with water. Symbolic, analogical, projective, and constructivist accounts fail to explain this convergence or its internal consistency. This article argues that embodiment and dwelling share a common stability topology: layered gradients ranging from nearly fixed foundations to rapidly changing surfaces. The resulting ontological homology accounts for the recurring correspondences, their gendered and hierarchical deployments, and the cross-cultural rediscovery of the same architecture.

I. The Ethnographic Puzzle

Across an extraordinary range of otherwise unrelated healing traditions, the body keeps being described in the vocabulary of landscape, and the landscape keeps being described in the vocabulary of the body. Hippocratic medicine correlates the four humors with the four seasons and the four elements, and instructs the physician arriving in a new city to study its winds, its waters, and its exposure before examining a single patient, on the ground that the character of a population's ailments is set by the character of the ground it lives on. Ayurveda articulates a formal doctrine, the Loka-Purusha Siddhanta, in which the individual body is stated outright to be an exact replica of the universe, built from the same five elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, that compose everything else. Chinese medicine correlates the body's organs with the five phases, wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, each phase at once a season, a direction, an organ, and a stage of transformation, so that a physician diagnosing an imbalance in the liver is, in the same diagnostic gesture, locating that imbalance somewhere on a cycle shared with spring, with the colour green, and with the wind. South Asian traditions of semen loss treat the male body as a kind of reservoir, slowly filled over years and catastrophically drained in moments, using language interchangeable with the language used for wells, granaries, and irrigation channels, a vocabulary of storage and depletion this article will return to once the theoretical apparatus needed to take it seriously has been built. None of these traditions borrowed from any of the others, and yet each independently arrived at the conviction that the body cannot be understood except through the vocabulary of place, substance, and weather.

A second body of material, and for the purposes of this article the central one, makes the same point with even greater specificity, and this article treats it as the primary ethnographic corpus rather than as illustrative background. Comparative Indo-European linguistics and mythology have reconstructed, from evidence spanning Vedic Sanskrit, Old Norse, Avestan, Latin, and Greek, a coherent and remarkably stable system of correspondences between the parts of the body and the features of the land, and the system is thoroughly gendered. Flesh is earth. Bone is stone or rock. Blood is water, most often the sea. Hair is grass or trees. The skull is the sky. Running through the whole system is a consistent assignment of the softer, more perishable pairing, flesh and earth, to the feminine, and the harder, more enduring pairing, bone and stone, to the masculine. Men are described, praised, and mythologised as rock, bone, mountain, and oak: hard, upright, enduring. Women are described, praised, and mythologised as flesh, water, soil, and fluid: soft, yielding, generative. This is not an occasional poetic flourish confined to a handful of texts. It is a structural feature of an entire language family's inherited imagination, reconstructed independently by scholars working from myths of cosmic dismemberment, Vedic ritual homology, and the etymology of ordinary words, and it recurs with a consistency that a theory of coincidence or independent literary invention cannot easily explain.

Bruce Lincoln's reconstruction of the Indo-European creation myth, in which the cosmos is fashioned from the dismembered body of a primordial giant, Purusha in the Vedic tradition, Ymir among the Norse, Gayōmart among the Zoroastrians, shows the correspondence taken to its most literal possible extreme: the mountains are not compared to bones, they are bones, the actual transformed substance of an ancestral body. Mallory and Adams's summary of the reconstructed homology table, flesh to earth, bone to stone, blood to sea, hair to plants, skull to sky, eyes to sun, mind to moon, breath to wind, gives this correspondence the status of reconstructed vocabulary rather than mere theme. Brian K. Smith's account of the Vedic bandhu system shows the correspondence put to ritual work: the sacrifice was efficacious precisely because acting on the altar was understood to act simultaneously on the corresponding element of the cosmos and the corresponding element of the sacrificer's own body. None of this is a metaphor in the weak sense of a resemblance noticed and then elaborated for effect. It is presented, across every one of these sources, as an identity, and the puzzle this article sets out to solve is why that identity keeps being discovered, independently, by traditions with no contact with one another.

II. The Problem with Symbolic Explanations

The scholarship that has assembled this material has, on the whole, been content to describe it rather than explain it, and the explanations that have been offered tend to fall into one of four related moves, each of which restates the correspondence in different words rather than accounting for it.

The first move calls the correspondence symbolic. Bone symbolises endurance, stone symbolises endurance, therefore bone comes to symbolise stone. This is true as far as it goes, and it is also circular: it presupposes exactly the shared meaning it is meant to explain, since nothing in the concept of endurance forces it to attach to bone and stone rather than to, say, teeth and shells, or breath and wind, both of which are durable or persistent in their own way and neither of which occupies the central place in the homology system that bone and stone occupy.

The second move calls it analogy, drawing on the cognitive-linguistic tradition associated with George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, in which abstract or difficult domains are understood by mapping them onto more concrete, bodily grounded domains. This tradition has done more than any other to establish that such mappings are not decorative but constitutive of thought, and nothing in the present article disputes that finding. What the analogy account does not explain is directionality and selection: why the body should map so insistently onto landscape rather than onto some other concrete domain equally available to embodied cognition, and why, within landscape, certain features, stone, water, wind, rather than others, sand, cloud, ice, become the body's preferred counterparts across so many independent traditions.

The third move calls it projection, in the psychoanalytic or phenomenological sense: humans understand the world by projecting the felt structure of their own bodies onto it. This has the same difficulty as the analogy account, from the opposite direction. If the body is simply projected outward, there is no principled reason the projection should recruit exactly the same handful of landscape features, stone, water, mountain, wind, again and again, rather than distributing itself more evenly across everything a landscape contains.

The fourth move, cultural construction, treats the whole system as historically contingent, a set of associations a given culture happened to settle on and then transmitted to its members. This is the least explanatory of the four, since it converts the puzzle this article opened with, why unrelated cultures converge on the same pairings, into an assertion that they do not really converge at all, each culture's system being sui generis and any apparent overlap a matter of coincidence or diffusion still to be traced. The convergence is exactly what needs explaining, and cultural construction, taken on its own, treats convergence as something to be explained away rather than accounted for.

What none of these four moves asks, because none of them needed to in order to be locally plausible, is why flesh and earth, and not flesh and fire, or bone and cloud, are the pairings that recur. An explanation adequate to the ethnographic record has to do more than note that bodies and landscapes get compared. It has to explain why the comparisons sort themselves, with such consistency, along exactly the lines they do, and why the sorting comes out the same way in traditions that never spoke to one another.

There is a further test any adequate explanation should pass, and none of the four existing moves is built to attempt it. If the pairings were symbolic, analogical, projective, or culturally constructed in the ordinary sense, there would be no particular reason to expect the internal structure of the pairings to be consistent, no reason bone should always pair with the same kind of landscape feature rather than sometimes with mountains and sometimes, in a different mood or genre, with clouds. Yet the record shows exactly this consistency: bone recurs with stone and mountain, never with cloud or fire; blood recurs with water and rivers, never with stone or wind. A theory that explained the existence of body-landscape pairing without also explaining its internal consistency would have explained only half the phenomenon, and it is this second half, why the pairings sort themselves the way they do rather than scattering across every possible combination, that the account developed in the sections that follow is built to answer directly.

III. The Stability Topology of Embodiment

The explanation this article proposes begins from a distinction that has to be kept sharp from the outset, because the argument depends on not confusing it with something it is not. Embodiment is one of the mediations through which selfrecursive coordination, coordination that responds to how it is engaged with, actually occurs: the body is not a fixed backdrop to a life but an ongoing, responsive counterpart the living being who has it is continuously coordinating with. That responsiveness is categorical. A bone and a heartbeat are both, in this strict sense, equally selfrecursive, since both answer, on some timescale, to how the body that carries them is used, and nothing in what follows treats one as more embodied or more responsive than the other. A further pair of distinctions, how reliably a counterpart's change can be anticipated and how far it can be deliberately shaped, matters once this series turns to what a species capable of manufacturing its own anchors can do that inherited dwelling cannot. Neither is required yet.

What varies enormously, and what this article is actually about, is a different question the categorical distinction leaves entirely open: given that some part of the body is being coordinated with, how quickly does it change on its own, independent of any particular occasion of attention or use? A skeleton is selfrecursive in the strict sense, since bone density does actually respond to load, exercise, and diet, but it responds on a timescale of years, and across the span of an ordinary day a skeleton is, for every practical purpose, as unresponsive as a stone. A heartbeat is selfrecursive in exactly the same strict sense, and it responds to a sudden fright inside a single second. This difference in the rate at which a selfrecursive counterpart moves, not whether it moves at all, is the stability gradient this article traces, and it is a gradient this theory has not previously stated explicitly, though it has been implicit in every distinction the theory has drawn between what a body carries and what a body is doing at any given moment.

Once the body is examined along this axis rather than treated as a single, undifferentiated thing, it resolves into a layered structure. At the slow end sit the skeleton and the deep architecture of the joints, which alter over years and, past a certain age, alter mostly in the direction of loss. Slightly faster, but still measured in months and years, sits muscle memory and trained skill, plastic enough to be built and lost but never on a single occasion. Faster again, on a scale of days to weeks, sit the hormonal cycles that regulate reproduction, appetite, and mood, rhythmic rather than merely variable, returning to something like the same state on a schedule the body itself enforces. Faster still, on a scale of hours, sits the circadian rhythm that governs sleep, alertness, and body temperature. Faster again, on a scale of minutes, sits interoception in its ordinary sense, hunger, thirst, fatigue, the felt state of one's own insides. And at the fastest end of all, changing within single seconds, sit heartbeat, breath, and the immediate flush of an emotional response. Pain sits awkwardly across several of these bands at once, capable of the instantaneous, the acute, and the chronic, which is part of why it resists easy classification in every medical system that has tried to locate it, humoral, Ayurvedic, or biomedical alike.

None of these bands is more truly embodiment than any other. All of them are selfrecursive coordination with the same living being, differing only in how quickly the counterpart being coordinated with actually moves. But a body considered as a whole is not one point on this gradient. It is the entire gradient at once, a structure with a nearly fixed foundation and a rapidly changing surface, held together within a single organism, and it is this layered structure, and not any single feature of the body taken in isolation, that the rest of this argument depends on.

A tradition that had never heard of stability gradients arrived at strikingly similar architecture from its own direction. Ayurvedic dhatu theory describes bodily tissue as formed through a sequential transformation, food refined successively into blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow, and finally the most concentrated tissue of all, each stage slower to form and slower to replenish than the one before it. The theory is not stating a stability gradient in the vocabulary this article uses, and its physiology, a literal sequential conversion of one tissue into the next, is not biologically accurate. But the ordering it proposes, fast-forming and expendable at one end, slow-forming and precious at the other, tracks the same underlying axis this section has just derived independently, from bone at the slow, structural pole to blood and flesh nearer the fast, replenishable one. A tradition attending closely enough to the body's own workings, whatever theory of mechanism it happens to hold, keeps arriving at some version of the same layered order, because the order is there in the body to be found.

IV. The Stability Topology of Dwelling

Dwelling admits the same kind of layered structure, and for a directly parallel reason. The landscape a living being inhabits is, for the purposes of this argument, coordinated with non-recursively: a mountain does not respond to how it is approached, and nothing that follows treats it as though it did. The two gradients this article compares have to be built on the same categorical footing for the comparison to mean anything, which is why this point is stated as plainly here as the equivalent claim about embodiment was stated above. What varies, again, is not whether the landscape answers back, since it never does, but how quickly its own state changes on a timescale independent of anyone attending to it.

At the slowest end of this second gradient sit mountains, river valleys carved over millennia, and the deep bones of a coastline, features a human lifetime is too short to watch change at all. A person is born, lives, and dies beneath the same skyline their great-grandparents knew, and the mountain that skyline depends on will still be recognisably itself for their own great-grandchildren. Slightly faster, on a scale that a single human generation can sometimes register, sit the slow migration of a river's course, the silting of a delta, the retreat of a glacier, changes a community's oldest members might describe having watched happen, even if no single year within their lifetime showed the difference. Faster again, on the scale of a year, sits seasonality itself, the return of cold, heat, rain, and drought on a cycle regular enough that entire agricultural and ritual calendars can be built on top of it with confidence, a regularity dependable enough that whole systems of medicine, Hippocratic and Ayurvedic alike, could treat the yearly round as a fixed backdrop against which everything faster is measured. Faster still, on the scale of a day, sits the solar cycle of light and dark that every embodied creature's own circadian rhythm has evolved to track, so reliably that the two rhythms, one in the sky and one inside the body, are barely experienced as separate at all. Faster again, on the scale of hours, sits weather in the ordinary sense, cloud, rain, and temperature, changeable enough to require daily attention but rarely surprising enough to overturn a season's general character. Faster still sit storms, capable of transforming a landscape's felt character within minutes and leaving behind consequences that outlast the storm itself by weeks. And at the fastest end of all sit wind and fog, which can alter completely within seconds and leave no trace of having done so, the most volatile surface a nonrecursive counterpart in this theory's vocabulary ever presents.

As with embodiment, no single band of this gradient is more truly dwelling than any other. A landscape considered as a whole is, exactly like a body considered as a whole, the entire gradient held together at once: a nearly permanent foundation, mountains, valleys, the shape of the land, beneath a rapidly changing surface of weather, light, and season. This parallel is not a coincidence this article is content to note in passing. It is the structural fact the rest of the argument depends on, because two mediations organised by the same shape, and not merely by a family resemblance between individual features picked out after the fact, are what makes systematic cross-mapping between them possible rather than accidental. A culture that had only ever noticed that mountains are large and bones are hard would have discovered a resemblance. A culture that organises its medicine, its myth, and its everyday vocabulary around the discovery that both domains are structured, top to bottom, on the same principle has discovered something considerably harder to arrive at by chance.

V. The Ontological Homology

Embodiment and dwelling, examined this way, turn out to be organised by the same underlying architecture: both are layered structures ranging from a nearly fixed foundation to a rapidly changing surface, and both are zoetic mediations, a term this article introduces here for the primary dimensions through which recursive life is actually lived, from the Greek zoe, life, as distinct from the poietic mediations, multimateriality and multisymbolization, through which such life is deliberately deposited into durable form. This is the claim this article calls the ontological homology, and it needs to be stated with some care, because it is a stronger claim than the ones the existing scholarship has offered, and the strength is exactly what does the explanatory work the symbolic, analogical, projective, and constructivist accounts could not.

Bone and stone are not compared because both happen to be hard. They are compared because both occupy the same region of two independently existing stability gradients, the near-fixed, slow-changing region, one gradient belonging to embodiment and the other to dwelling. Blood and rivers are not compared because both happen to be wet. They are compared because both occupy the fast-changing, continuously flowing region of their respective gradients. Breath and wind, hair and grass, mood and weather, all recur as pairings for the same structural reason: not an arbitrary cultural decision to notice a resemblance, but the recognition, arrived at independently and repeatedly, that two domains organised by the same underlying topology will present the same regions to any observer attending to either one closely enough to notice its internal structure at all. The pairing is not metaphorical resemblance dressed up as ontology. It is ontology, correctly perceived, expressed in the only vocabulary available before either domain had a name for its own internal structure.

Ordinary landscape vocabulary preserves this perception even where no one intends any metaphor at all. Headlands, foothills, the mouth of a river, the shoulder of a hill, the brow of a cliff: geographers including Denis Cosgrove and J. Douglas Porteous have noted that the traffic in this everyday naming runs overwhelmingly from body to land rather than land to body, and the present argument explains why the traffic should run in that direction without needing to invoke any special poetic intention on the part of whoever first used these words. A speaker reaching for a name for the point where a river begins to widen and slow, the fast-changing surface easing toward the sea, reaches for mouth because mouth already names the corresponding transition in a domain whose internal structure is more immediately felt. The naming is not decorative. It is the fossil record of a homology being used as a resource, by speakers who had no reason to doubt that landscape and body were built from the same architecture and every reason, given how naturally the vocabulary transferred, to go on assuming it.

This is what traditional medicine, across an extraordinary range of otherwise unconnected traditions, kept rediscovering. Hippocratic medicine's instruction that a physician must study the winds, waters, and exposure of a city before treating its patients is not advice to consult an external influence on the body. It is advice to read one instance of the shared topology, the landscape's fast-changing surface layered over its slow foundation, as a guide to the likely condition of another instance of the same topology, the body of whoever lives there. The correlation of the four humors with the four seasons and the four elements gives this insight a systematic vocabulary: blood with spring and air, yellow bile with summer and fire, black bile with autumn and earth, phlegm with winter and water. Galen's extension of the system into the four temperaments, and his observation that a person born in a hot, dry climate tends toward the choleric while a person born in a cold, wet climate tends toward the phlegmatic, pushes the same insight one step further: the surface of a landscape's gradient sets the surface of a body's gradient, because both are answering, on comparable timescales, to comparable forces. Melothesia, the mapping of zodiac signs and planets onto specific organs that structured medical practice from Babylon through the European Middle Ages, encodes the same underlying intuition in an especially literal form: the body's structure is legible in the sky's structure because both, at bottom, are instances of one architecture.

Ayurveda states the homology as doctrine rather than leaving it implicit. The Loka-Purusha Siddhanta holds that the individual is an exact replica of the universe, and the doctrine of the five great elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, treats these not as poetic categories but as the literal shared material of both body and cosmos, present in the body as solid tissue, fluid, metabolic heat, movement, and the cavities that make movement possible. Francis Zimmermann's account of the Jangala and Anupa ecological zones in classical Hindu medicine, the dry open land and the marshy wet land, each with its characteristic flora, fauna, and effect on the body's doshas, shows the homology operating as a practical clinical tool: a physician managing a patient's internal balance was, in the same act, managing that patient's relationship to an external topology occupying the same structural positions. Paracelsus's Renaissance revival of the doctrine, correlating each organ with a planet and each disease with the malign influence of that organ's celestial counterpart, and Leonardo's comparison of the earth's rivers to veins and its rocks to bones, are repeated, historically independent arrivals at the same structural recognition this article is now stating directly: two domains built from the same architecture will always be describable in each other's terms, and cultures that attend closely to either domain will discover this whether or not they possess a theory of why it is true.

What recurs across humoral pathology, Babylonian astral medicine, and Ayurvedic dosha theory is not any single proposed mechanism, since the mechanisms differ from tradition to tradition and often contradict one another. What recurs is the homology itself: the same pairing of bone with stone, blood with water, breath with wind, articulated independently by physicians who never read one another's texts. The mechanisms are each tradition's own historically specific account of how the correspondence works. The correspondence itself is what this article is tracking, and it is there to be found in the ethnographic and linguistic record regardless of which mechanism a given tradition proposed for it.

VI. Gender

If embodiment and dwelling share a single stability topology, a further question becomes askable that the symbolic and constructivist accounts could only ever assert, never derive: why does gender ideology recruit this topology so consistently, and why does it recruit it in exactly the direction it does, hardness assigned to men, softness to women, rather than the reverse?

The Indo-European material gives an unusually clear answer, because the assignment is not a loose cultural preference but a coherent system applied with real consistency across an entire language family. Flesh, the soft, mutable, fast-regenerating tissue of the body, positioned at the volatile end of the embodiment gradient, is paired with earth, the fertile, cultivable, fast-changing surface of the land, positioned at the volatile end of the dwelling gradient, and the pairing is assigned to the feminine. Bone, the hard, slow-changing structural tissue that outlasts the flesh built around it, positioned at the stable end of the embodiment gradient, is paired with stone, the enduring, slow-changing structural feature of the land, positioned at the stable end of the dwelling gradient, and the pairing is assigned to the masculine. This is not two independent decisions, one about bodies and one about landscapes, that happened to align. It is a single decision about where to draw a line across a shared topology, applied twice, once to embodiment and once to dwelling, and the alignment follows automatically once the line has been drawn in the same place both times.

The mythological record shows this line being drawn with striking explicitness. Lincoln's reconstruction of the Indo-European cosmogony, the sacrifice and dismemberment of a primordial figure whose body becomes the world, distributes the volatile and the stable regions of the body onto the corresponding regions of the landscape in the same act that creates the world at all: flesh into earth, bone into mountains, blood into rivers or the sea, breath into wind, skull into sky. The myth does not compare two already separate domains. It generates the landscape's topology directly out of the body's topology, in a single gesture, which is as strong a piece of evidence as ethnography could hope to find that the two were never experienced as separate systems needing to be linked by simile in the first place.

Burial practice extends the same logic from cosmogony into the ordinary handling of the dead, and it does so with a precision the myths only imply. Across many Indo-European cultures, interring a body in the earth was understood as a literal return of flesh to the substance it had always structurally belonged to, a reversal of the cosmogonic act rather than a new one, and the agricultural vocabulary that accompanies burial in text after text is exact rather than loosely poetic: the ground is ploughed, itself a widespread metaphor for intercourse, seeded with the dead, and expected, in due course, to yield a harvest of new life. The earth does not merely receive the flesh. It is repeatedly described as consuming it, digesting it, in language that treats the ground as doing to a body what a mother's body does to food, transforming one substance into another so that something else can grow. None of this makes sense as an arbitrary poetic choice among equally available alternatives. It makes sense as the same homology, worked out consistently, applied to the single event, death, that most directly tests whether flesh and earth were ever really thought of as two things rather than one.

Uli Linke's work on blood extends the same logic into the body's most volatile fluid: blood is dangerous and generative in the same breath, tied to both birth and to wounding, and its containment within the body reads, across the tradition, as a specifically masculine achievement, holding the volatile in check, while its flow, whether menstrual or maternal, reads as feminine, an alignment that only makes sense once blood has already been positioned at the fast, dangerous end of a shared gradient rather than treated as a substance with no inherent structural position at all.

The same logic organises hierarchy as well as gender, and it organises the social order too, not only the natural one. Brian K. Smith's account of the Vedic bandhu system describes a vertical ordering in which the head, associated with the sky and the sun, sits above the feet, associated with the earth, and this vertical ordering of the body is mapped directly onto both the cosmos and the social order, the Brahmin aligned with the head, the labouring classes with the feet. Dumézil's trifunctional hypothesis, reconstructing a Proto-Indo-European social structure organised around sovereignty, warfare, and production, finds the same three-part division encoded in the Purusha Sukta's account of the social classes emerging from different parts of the cosmic body, mouth, arms, thighs, feet. The Roman fable of Menenius Agrippa, in which the patricians are likened to the stomach that receives and distributes nourishment and the plebeians to the labouring limbs, shows the same body-derived hierarchy operating outside the Vedic world entirely, using the same underlying resource, a body whose parts are not interchangeable, to organise a social arrangement around the same architecture. None of this hierarchy is imported into the body-landscape homology from outside. It is generated by the homology, since a shared topology with a stable pole and a volatile pole will always be available for exactly this kind of ranking.

Semen-loss traditions, widespread across South Asia and reported in various forms well beyond it, are usually read either as a matter of physiological error or as an expression of ideas about masculinity a given culture happens to hold. The stability gradient this article has traced gives a third reading, more precise than either. The dhatu sequence already introduced places semen at the very end of the transformative chain, the most refined and slowest-forming tissue the body produces, requiring, by the tradition's own account, the longest accumulation of any bodily substance. This places semen at the most stable, slowest-accumulating end of the embodiment topology, the same end bone and stone already occupy, built up over months rather than replenished in an afternoon. The anxiety these traditions express is not a confused fear of an ordinary fluid. It is a structurally coherent response to a mismatch of rates: a substance that belongs, by the logic of its own formation, to the slow and stable pole of the gradient can nonetheless be lost at the volatile pole's speed, in a single event. Traditions that treat this loss as catastrophic are registering an accurate perception that accumulation and depletion are occurring on incompatible timescales, whatever further cultural elaboration a given tradition then builds on top of that perception.

VII. Conclusion: The Architecture Beneath the Comparison

The body and the world become each other's mirror not because a culture decided, arbitrarily, to describe one in terms of the other, but because embodiment and dwelling are organised by the same underlying architecture, a structure ranging from a nearly fixed foundation to a rapidly changing surface, and any tradition that studies either domain closely enough will eventually notice the other domain wearing the same shape. Traditional medicine, across Greece, Rome, Babylon, and India, kept encountering this architecture centuries before anyone had the vocabulary of stability gradients or zoetic mediations to state it directly, each tradition building its own account of the mechanism, humoral, astrological, elemental, on top of the same recurring pairing of bone with stone, blood with water, and flesh with earth. The pairing recurs because the architecture it tracks recurs. It does not depend on any one tradition's account of why.

This distinction sets a standard the rest of this argument, and the two articles that follow it, have to meet. It is not enough to show that a symbolic system existed and persisted. A structural explanation has to show why the specific pairings it produced were the ones available to be discovered, and why cultures with no contact with one another kept discovering the same ones. Symbolism, analogy, projection, and cultural construction could describe the persistence. Only a shared architecture, present in the domains being compared before anyone compared them, explains the convergence.

What remains to be explained is not why bodies and landscapes get compared, but what happens once a species capable of noticing this homology also becomes capable of manufacturing new ground of its own. Poiesis, the coupled work of multimateriality and multisymbolization, deposits durable, humanly made counterparts that do not merely occupy the stable end of an inherited topology but are built, deliberately, to sit there: a road, a wall, a name, a law. That is a different kind of anchor from a mountain or a bone, made rather than found, and its accumulation across generations is what the next article in this series calls sedimentation, and civilisation. Once a world is full of such anchors, they become available for a further purpose beyond the coordination they were built to serve. They become the vocabulary through which language itself tries to speak about the least stable thing a life contains, its relations with other people, which is where the third article in this series takes up the argument in turn.
